Chapter Twelve: Homecoming
Stepping one foot inside the crowded cafeteria, it seemed like the entire world was at a stand-still. Sophisticatedly dressed students stopped in their tracks, their trays of food still in their hands, and glued their eyes to her and Klaus. Her eyes followed their moving lips as they all muttered amongst themselves. Her heart beat rapidly. They knew. They knew she was on the hit list, that she had thrown up her entire stomach last night, and that she had spent the night in Klaus's bed. She might as well have used her forehead as a diary entry.
Caroline finally breathed again when she realized why they looked so fascinated with the two of them. It wasn't because of what they knew, it was because of what they were seeing. She'd nearly forgotten that Klaus was walking her to the cafeteria like a suitor would lead his date into a ball. Caroline's arm was still linked with Klaus's, her hand gripping his bicep. It had seemed like a good idea at the time. It would've significantly reduced the chances of someone snatching her, or burying a bullet in her brain. Or at least she hoped.
She began to uncurl her fingers from around his arm, but Klaus quickly clutched her even tighter against him. Caroline's body tensed and her heart sped up. She met Klaus's intense blue eyes, doubt passing through her own. She was quickly reminded of the immediate danger that she so willingly attached herself to. This must be what desperation looked like.
"I wouldn't," Klaus warned, his voice just above a whisper, which was even more terrifying than his usual rattling threats.
Caroline kept her head held high, refusing to give him the satisfaction that he could intimidate her. "It's a good thing I'm not you, then." She tore her arm free from his grip, to her surprise. Taking a step back, she pretended not to notice the hypnotized gazes from the students that surrounded them. She could hear them. "Oh, my God. Is that Klaus with Caroline?" "Are they together?" "Is he taking her to homecoming?" "I hope he kills her when he's done with her."
Caroline ground her teeth to steel herself. She couldn't afford to rise to the bait, especially not when she could feel herself being scrutinized, not just by the students, but by the eyes she couldn't see. She was being watched by them, the nurses and the faculty who wanted to hang her.
She froze in her tracks when her eyes met familiar, malicious green ones. The eyes scanned over like they were searching for her Achilles' heel. Raising her head up, she didn't falter for even a moment. The girl had taken her by surprise before, but they would not be having a repeat of that. Things were different, she was different.
"Someone's been busy…" The girl approached them, her eyes flicked from Caroline to Klaus, her eyes lingering a little too long on Klaus's stature. He hadn't seemed to notice the bold student at first, but his jaw ticked when she gave Caroline a sideways glance. "Trying to take what isn't hers."
Caroline felt bile rising in her throat. She had had enough of this girl. It was pathetic. Plus, her lust for revenge was overwhelming her. She opened her mouth to spew venom at her, but Klaus beat her to the punch.
Klaus had taken a step in front of her, guarding her like a lethal bulldog. It was an odd feeling being defended instead of attacked. She didn't know how she was supposed to feel about the situation, but what she felt wasn't an unpleasant feeling at all.
"And, you, love, are soiling yourself over someone who has never and will never be yours," Klaus announced harshly. His callus words were followed by a round of snickers from the throng of people around them. Tatia's entire olive face flushed blood red with anger and embarrassment. Caroline could tell she wanted to say something, but no one would dare be that bold with Klaus, well, aside from herself.
Despite Tatia's radiating fear, she remained nailed into the spot she stood. Klaus's smirk was filled with glee from the expected subdued reaction from the girl. Caroline knew that a normal girl would feel excess amounts of guilt seeping through her veins, but she wasn't normal. She felt pride and power coursing through her. Klaus may have been an untrustworthy bastard, but he sure knew how to make her feel on top of the world. Albeit, she didn't need him to fight her battles for her, she liked knowing that someone thought she was worth fighting for.
Caroline's lips spread into a wicked smile, which only enraged Tatia even further. "I didn't steal Klaus. We're not together. And I think he has enough taste not to waste his time on the desperate, clingy type." She cocked her head, enjoying the way Tatia was trembling in anger.
Caroline darted her eyes over to Klaus's, sharing a look of respect with him. The expression on his face caused a fire to ignite in her heart. It was so strange, seeing someone welcoming her darkness as opposed to abhorring it.
Before she could blink, Klaus's eyes were torn from hers, his back facing her instead. Caroline flinched and caught a flash of blonde hair whipped in front of Klaus.
Rebekah.
"We need to have a chat," the moody blonde informed her brother as she tried to drag him away from the excitement.
Klaus ripped his arm out of her reach. "Well, I need a plethora of things. I would prioritize one of those things as, my sister learning not to interrupt me when I'm in the middle of an agenda."
"And what would that agenda be? Seducing one of your meals?" Rebekah snapped. "There are far more important things…" she lowered her voice then.
Caroline's breathing grew heavy at the sound of Rebekah referring to her as one of Klaus's "meals". She knew it. She had been disposable all this time, and that was all she needed to confirm that Klaus couldn't be trusted.
Klaus angrily latched onto his sister's arm, shifting the spotlight away from the other two girls as he dragged his sister off. Caroline couldn't help but strain to listen to what they were saying. Were they planning her demise right in front of her? Were they laughing at how easily she had slipped into comfort at his side? It was all too good to be true, she had known that. But she had needed that one moment in her life to feel like she wasn't so alone in the world.
"Did you honestly think you were special?" Tatia sniggered behind her. Caroline was now towering over the shorter brunette, her threatening blue eyes just inches from the defiant green ones. "Klaus will never care about you. If he wouldn't take me, what makes you think he could ever come to care for a random blonde bimbo?"
Her eyes flared a murderous icy blue color. Tatia just seemed amused by the burning rage that she had elicited. "I'd rather be a blonde bimbo than a pathetic wannabe who's so delusional that she can't see that he's just not that into you." That quickly wiped the smirk off Tatia's face, and Caroline smiled down at her with insincere sympathy.
A round of cheers and hollers resounded from the crowd that circled them, the focus clearly reverted back to them. Each sound of appraisal that she heard was like power being absorbed into her and going straight to her head.
"Smile while you can, Caroline," Tatia lowered her voice, so Caroline was the only one who could make out her words. "Klaus won't protect you forever; his interest can only go so far. And when that time comes- which will most like be soon- I'll be there to give you what you deserve. In fact, I think I'll give Elena a call and the authority that you've successfully enraged. They can poke around in your brain and shape you into any way they want, doesn't that sound fun?"
Caroline's blood boiled as flashes of memories appeared behind her eyes. Her hands instinctively lunged for Tatia's neck, but was put to a halt when the brunette raised her hands up in surrender.
"Be smart, Caroline," Tatia warned. "The walls have eyes. Mikaelson, or not, they will shoot you down in front of everyone if you give them a warrant for it."
Caroline grinded her teeth as she felt the student body clamoring around them. Of course they wanted to see a melee between them, preferable one that resulted in death. However, Tatia was right, she couldn't afford to cause a scene this huge, even if Tatia was asking to get killed. She didn't seek Klaus out just to end up dead.
Klaus finally relinquished his steel grip on Rebekah's arm when they found themselves in a corner, isolated from the roaring crowd. He rolled his eyes as he felt the burning stares of the humans on the both of them. They were vultures all of them. They all had nothing better to do other than breathe down his neck at all hours of the day.
"What do you think you're doing?" Rebekah snapped.
"What am I doing?" He used all his willpower not to scream at her with every ounce of fury in his body. "You are willing to compromise the identities we've built here for your petty jealousy. I believe it is I who should be asking you, what the bloody hell do you think you're doing."
Rebekah darted her eyes away from Klaus's. "Save me the theatrics. No one would have understood what I really meant, and if they did, we would simply compel them."
"Using time that we could easily be using to do more useful things."
"Like fucking Caroline Forbes?" Rebekah fired. "I know what you were thinking."
Klaus licked his lips, displaying his frustration. "You need to let this go," he advised. "I'm certain there are far more pressing matters that need your attention. Winning homecoming should be the least of yours. I won't tell you again, Rebekah. Leave Caroline alone." With his hands folded behind his back, he turned on his heel to head back to the blonde at the forefront of the attention in the room.
"Nik," Rebekah called him, and Klaus paused. "Did you mean what you said last night...? Are you going to turn her into one of us?"
A rush surged through Klaus at the vivid memory from the night before. He'd seen Caroline with blood on her hands before, and he licked his lips at the memory. Now his mind imagined her with elongated fangs and blood red eyes. Her blonde hair was matted with fresh red liquid and warm blood ran down her lips and dripped from her chin. His eyes threatened to flash a gold color, but he had to push it down. He could see her being everything he was, embracing the potential still locked away inside her. She would want it. Caroline was born to be a vampire.
Caroline was meant to be his dark queen.
Klaus walked away from Rebekah, not bothering to turn back or speak a word. Once he'd rejoined Caroline, he found her hands threatening to wrap around Tatia's throat and crush it like a twig. That's my girl, he thought as he grinned at the display. Caroline began to lower the claw-like positioned hands, and Klaus raised his hand up to silence the room. Everyone turned to Klaus, frozen, including Caroline and Tatia, confused and apprehensious.
Klaus trained his predatory eyes on Caroline, nodding his head at her hands in approval. "Go on." He came behind her, his hands still tucked behind his back, only head head hovering above his own. Dipping his head just enough so that his mouth was level with her ear, his breath laid thick on his skin with each word that fell from his lips. "Go on, Caroline. Kill her." He felt her shiver against him and it only brought naughty scenarios to the front of his mind. Oh, he will enjoy drawing this out slow.
She glanced back at him with skepticism, her eyes constantly being drawn to the cameras at the corners of the room. "Klaus…"
He softly shushed her and shook his head. "Do not heed them. The rules don't apply to you anymore. You're with me, which means you're free… You can do whatever you want. And, right now, I think you want to kill her." Klaus flicked his eyes back over to a terrified Tatia. He loved the look of terrified prey. Using one finger, he sensually drew the pad of his finger down the sensitive skin on Caroline's neck. She took a sharp intake of breath at the simple motion, and his lips grew even wider. Every little thing she did seemed to have such a profound effect on him. He removed the blonde hair from concealing her milky skin. He let his hot breath burn the delicate skin there as his voice became dark and low. "You are magnificent surrounded in darkness, love. Have at it."
He could physically see the hesitance melt away from her face. His eyes never wavered, and, in an instant, Caroline had thrown Tatia to the ground, her hands winding around the other girl's neck like a cobra. The audience roared back to life, yelling and cooing like creatures found in the jungle.
Tatia's face quickly turned red as she gasped for air, futilely. Her hands attempted to claw at Caroline's relentless ones, but it was like trying to dent steel with her nails. Caroline had swiftly extinguished any fight Tatia had previously had. The girl was a natural. Incredible.
Tatia was kicking her feet, her heels clattering to the ground. She exerted the last of her energy to try something, anything to pry herself away from Caroline's grasp. Klaus arched a brow when he saw Caroline put an end to Tatia's shaking legs by pressing her pointed knees down on the other girl's thighs. She was now completely on top of Tatia, subduing her, all control falling to Caroline. Her tempting position and demonstration of power only encouraged his mind to fantasize about how she would one day kill for him- for his eyes alone. Warm blood would run along her creamy neck and spill down her shirt and over her perky breasts. He would strip her bare, and she would climb on top of him just as she was on Tatia now.
His eyes fell down to her tight ass, making note that he would only have to angle his head down slightly to be able to look up her skirt in this position. He imagined just coming up behind her just to slam into her. She would scream his name and beg for mercy as he punished her for testing his patience for so long. If it had been any other human, he would have lost interest by now, and she would be dead. He could have taken her then and there, no one would dare defy him. But no, this was Caroline's moment, he would not rob her of it.
Klaus snapped out of his stupor in time to see life leave Tatia's green ones, the only color in her cheeks was from the rouge blush she had applied. Caroline exhaled deeply, like a sigh of relief. The blonde's eyes remained on Tatia's petrified, dead eyes. Slowly, she turned back to Klaus with a blank expression. He tensed, trying to read her expression and anticipate her reaction. A bright smile broke out across Caroline's features, and Klaus's body fully relaxed. His entire body filled with pride at the sight of the joy radiating from her.
Klaus offered her a hand to help her up, and she gladly took it. Wrapping an arm around her skinny waist, he turned them towards the awaiting crowd around them. An arrogant grin was on his lips and from what he could tell, Caroline had a similar one on her own face.
She was meant to be immortalised.
"Show some respect," Klaus ordered threateningly. He then returned his gaze to Caroline's expectant one, his eyes softened slightly. "You're in the presence of your queen."
The entire room burst into a sea of applauds and adoring praises. Any reservations anyone had held about her had vanished. The humans were his servants and fell in line like the disabled creatures they were.
"Thank you," a barely audible murmur escaped Caroline's lips. Klaus may not have heard her words through the obnoxiously loud thunder of voices emitting around them without his supernatural hearing. His hand tightened around Caroline's waist possessively and his lips stretched out even wider, looking out into the kingdom he planned on sharing with Caroline.
Everyone had known then, Klaus had marked his territory. Caroline was his. Now nothing could hurt her, and soon, nothing could kill her either.
Caroline went through the rest of her day, simultaneously feeling on top of the world and wanting to rip everyone's head off, literally. But sadly, she had just done her nails for the dance and had no intention of ruining her hard work. She had been fortunate not to ruin one of them during the Tatia debacle earlier today.
All she heard about today was how she killed Tatia in front of the entire school and her relationship with Klaus. Tatia she was willing to talk about, but throughout the day she kept hearing questions that she didn't want to answer. Like how she'd managed to seduce Klaus instead of the other way around, what it was like to date a guy who's rumored to not even have a beating heart in his chest, and if he goes down on her…
So not answering that.
At Klaus's insistence, he had taken her back to her room and agreed to pick her up an hour before the dance started so she would have time to check in with set up. His thoroughness was either reassuring or creepy, she hadn't decided yet.
As soon as she had gotten into her room, she hopped in the shower and threw on her robe as she got ready. She had dried her hair and then sat at her vanity mirror to apply her make up. In the midst of stroking her lashes with her mascara brush, her stomach growled and a familiar burning sensation travelled up her throat. Her hand dropped the brush, and she bolted into the bathroom to empty out her stomach for the second consecutive day. Her stomach still churned and it felt like flames were eating away at her esophagus.
When the nauseating torment ended, Caroline managed to drag herself back into her room. She curled up against the wall, hugging her knees to herself. Biting down on her lip, she tried to force the tears back, but it only assisted them in squeezing out. Hot tears now splashed onto her blush covered cheeks and her quiet sobs slipped out of her throat.
She hadn't cried this hard since the night it happened. The night that had brought her here.
Would she be cursed forever? The nightmare would never end. It wasn't enough that the doctors had scarred her when she was just a little girl. They had to continue to torment her dreams, and her every waking moment. The fate they molded for her was worse than death. She was destined to never embrace her true nature because of what they've done to her- what they tried to turn her into.
Caroline's fists shook with fury, and she bowed her head down. She would have her vengeance, she swore it. It was all of their fault. She hadn't meant to kill on the night of prom, or maybe she did. Now she would never know, and the doctors were to blame.
Memories of blood, screams, and heartbreak clouded her tear stinging eyes. She remembered it like it was yesterday, not that she would ever forget. The memory would forever be branded into her brain. It was all a blur when it happened, though. One minute, she was as normal as the mail carrier who came to their house six days a week, the next, she was an emotional mess, blood coating her entire pristine white gown. One would have thought the dress was originally red. It was quite fitting for her situation, now that she looks back.
Caroline's soft sobs were silenced when she heard someone banging on the other side of the door.
"Caroline?" Klaus pounded his fists against the sturdy wooden door. "Open this door. What's going on?" Caroline's heart jumped at Klaus's tone. He knew. Had she really been so reckless as to cry hard enough for someone who was passing by in the hall to overhear her let her defenses come down? Keep it together, Caroline! She berated herself.
Maybe if she didn't make a sound he would just go away, although, Klaus knew she was in her room… Or maybe he would conclude that she had left without informing him.
"I'm coming in," he stated.
Or maybe the universe just hated her. She shrink into the wall, hoping it would delay Klaus finding her.
Klaus broke the door down with a single push of his shoulder.
Damn him for being so strong.
Klaus's eyes immediately found her and crouched down in front of her, his brows furrowing in concern. "Caroline, what's happened? Tell me who hurt you."
She slowly shook her head, unable to stop the tears from falling even more rapidly. "I don't know their names." Her eyes widened, her blue irises doubling in size, when she realized what she had let slip. No. He wasn't supposed to know. No one was supposed to know.
Klaus's face hardened like the statue of a vengeful dictator. Caroline's back involuntarily pressed further into the wall, trying to create as much distance between herself and Klaus as she could in the confined space. She held her breath as she prepared herself for the onslaught of questions he was determined to pry out of her. "You will have your vengeance, Caroline. I promise." Her began to dissipate then, and she composed herself. She lifted her soaked eyes back to his, surprise shining through. "The only way to rid yourself of your demons is to batter them. Destroy the demons that make you weak; breed the ones that give you strength."
Caroline relaxed slightly. Klaus's eyes bored into hers, recognition storming behind the striking blues. It was like he was speaking from experience. Was this how he'd become so powerful? "Just go," she pleaded.
Klaus shook his head adamantly. He gently but firmly pulled hands away from her damp cheeks, revealing her puffy eyes and reddened face. He brought his face towards hers, his nose nearly grazing hers. Caroline sucked in a breath, and her eyes cautiously watched him. She was constantly finding herself in situation after situation of vulnerability with Klaus. She'd promised herself that she would never let herself be so weak after she was rid of them. Then again, she wasn't entirely free from them either.
Klaus tucked a blonde curl behind Caroline's ear, and she flinched at the contact. Being touched by Klaus was terrifying. She was at a huge disadvantage, and most of all, she wasn't sure if she could resist his fatal charm. There was this air about him that had him effortlessly seducing her into a state of security, but she knew better.
"I'm not going anywhere," Klaus said with conviction. He dropped his hands down to the floor, trapping her hips between his large hands.
Caroline gulped. There was such a stark contrast between his comforting words and his intimidating actions. Which one she was supposed to trust, she couldn't decipher. "Why?" She scanned his eyes. "Why do you care so much? If you're doing all this just to get into my pants, it's not worth it. And I don't think you're that naive. So why don't you tell me the real reason you're so invested in seeing me alive and healthy?"
An impressed look passed through Klaus's features. "We all have our reasons for doing the things we do, like how you refuse to let anyone know about the life you had in America."
Caroline glanced at him wearily, and then averted her eyes. Touche. She loathed that he was right, though.
"Are you excited?" Klaus's smooth accent relaxed her once more.
"What?"
"The dance tonight. I'm assuming you don't get many opportunities like this one."
She had nearly forgotten about the dance in the midst of her meltdown. The lights, the masks, and the music filled her imagination. This dance would be Caroline's time in the sun. "I didn't get to go to many dances since my mom liked to keep me locked away. The few times I did though, my friend was always the center of attention, so it was basically like I never went at all."
"Then they must not have the intellectual ability, or appreciation for beauty if they cannot recognize the presence of greatness," he extolled her. Caroline's cheeks flushed a slight pink. "The student body has, and soon the world will too."
The corners of her lips began lifting up into a small smile. It felt like it had been days since she was able to smile again. "Thank you." She gazed into Klaus's eyes and watched him stare back at her, marveling at her. She tried to seem unphased, but how could she when he looked at her like that. It wasn't the expression of a heartless killer. There was too much emotion within him to not be human on some level. "I should be getting ready."
Klaus nodded, and helped her back to her feet. "I'll be outside."
Caroline wanted to decline his statement because she knew that she wouldn't be ready for another hour, but the door was closing before she could. Plus, her throat was still raw from her upset stomach. She sighed.
Suit yourself.
Caroline had been on his arm for the second time that day when he walked her into the extravagantly decorated gym. She had been a vision when she opened the door. Her gold embroidered dress molded into her torso and puffed out at her mid thighs. The sweetheart neckline gave his eyes a peek at her tempting cleavage. He only allowed his eyes a brief glance at her body before he restricted them to her excited eyes. He had told her she looked ravishing, and she predictably pretended to be immune to his charms. This only confirmed that it wouldn't be long until she inevitably succumbed to him.
Klaus always got what he wanted.
Just as he had promised, they arrived an hour early for her to ensure all preparations went as planned. He had to stifle his chuckles when Rebekah nearly exploded when she saw them together. Klaus stayed close to Caroline as he lent her a hand with the finishing touches. Before they knew it, students were piling in, spiking the punch bowl, and dry humping on the dance floor. Same old, same old. He still found it hard to believe Caroline could get excited over such trivial things. But he kept in mind that she was still young. Simple human leisures like school dances would fall to the side in comparison to everything the life of a vampire had to offer.
Caroline had stormed off to rip off a few jocks' heads for daring to touch her meticulously placed decorations. She was still at a safe distance where he could keep a careful eyes on her. Klaus grinned to himself. She could strike fear into them so seamlessly. Beautiful.
"Ay, Klaus," Stefan's voice rang behind him.
Klaus was abruptly reeled from his trance, slightly annoyed with his friend. "Shouldn't you be handling damage control with the wicked vampire of the North?" He never took his eyes off Caroline.
Stefan joined him, leaning against the same table Klaus leaned on. He smiled and watched Caroline as well. "You must be proud of yourself. That show you put on during lunch, that was very impressive. She won't hold out much longer. I know I wouldn't. If you had told me you were gonna fuck me in that specific time frame, I probably would have let you."
Klaus arched his eyebrow with curiosity. Well, this was an interesting development.
"You know, hypothetically, if I was Caroline," Stefan reassured him.
"Of course," he smirked. "Either way I'm more than flattered."
Stefan groaned. "Oh, would you just… just fuck her and get this over with. I'm tired of playing referee with you and your sister. According to Rebekah, Caroline is a problem that needs to be disposed of immediately."
Klaus glared at him. "Then you can tell Rebekah that the only problem here is her and her attitude. Caroline will remain with me for however long I wish her to be, and that is none of Rebekah's concern." Klaus spun on his heel and tried to head back towards Caroline, but Stefan grabbed his wrist. He growled.
"Klaus… do you care about this girl?" Stefan's green eyes searched Klaus's hardening blue ones for even a hint of hidden emotion.
"Stefan…" he warned. Stefan knew better than to ask him such an offensive question. To think, he, Klaus Mikaelson, would succumb to such weakness. He must have really been looking for punishment.
Stefan threw his hands up in surrender. "Okay, fine. You don't care about her like that. But you should know, Rebekah's gunning for her tonight."
A burning rage pumped through Klaus's blood stream. He snapped his head back to Caroline, following Stefan's gaze. She was surrounded by three jocks, giggling at the cheap jokes they told her. They were all over her, their filthy hands running down the smooth, bare skin of her arms in seemingly innocent touches. He heard them, they wanted her to leave the party with them.
It wasn't a party until Klaus made his presence known.
Caroline's cheeks strained from the fake smiles she'd been flashing at the obvious morons. She probably would have stabbed them in their throats with a fork by now, but something was wrong; their behavior was off. It didn't surprise her that their compliments sounded empty, it's not like anyone here had any genuine intentions. They were driven by lust, greed, and… fear.
Their eyes kept darting elsewhere, like they knew they were being watched.
Something was very wrong.
"You look really sexy in that dress, Caroline." If she remembered correctly, his name was Tim. She'd always had a feeling he was the lewd, classless type. "I imagine you look even better underneath…" He ran his hand down her back suggestively. "Why do we all get out of here? We'll show you a good time."
She flicked her eyes up at him, looking like a dark enchantress. It was different when Klaus touched her and when other guys touched her. These were just simpleminded minions that she could bend to her will. She could control them. With Klaus, she couldn't even take hold of her own emotions. "Mmh… I don't think Rebekah would like that, though. She'd kill me for it. I can't get distracted by hot guys here- unless…"
"Unless?" Tim and the other boys asked, hope shining through their eyes.
Caroline placed her small hand on Tim's chest, drawing circular patterns with her finger. "Unless I find out what Rebekah has in store for me. Then, I could let my guard down and… find a hottie who knows how to give a good fuck." She looked up into their desperate eyes with guileless ones. They looked like they were about to start drooling any second now.
Idiots.
"I…" Tim sounded like he hadn't tasted water in months. "I… I could maybe help you with that."
She could have sworn his voice took on a high pitch for a brief moment. Smiling triumphantly, Caroline's hand curled into the white collar under his jacket. She purposefully let her breath graze his lips, and Tim's breathing turned erratic. "Tell me what you know, Tim." Boys like Tim were nothing but bravado. They pretended to be strong, but as soon as you ceased nursing their egos, and pulled the rug out from underneath them, they were reduced to feeble infants.
They were nothing.
He whispered into her ear. "Rebekah is going to-" The words in the boy's throat were killed and replaced by a guttural groan. His entire body trembled and he painfully heaved.
Caroline stepped back from him, her eyes widening as she watched blood spilling over his mouth. Her mind was spinning. It didn't make any sense, and the timing of it couldn't have been more inconvenient. He was just about to reveal the one thing that could have given her an advantage over Rebekah.
Her rapid eyes scanned over his convulsing body. She stopped when she spotted a long silver object protruding from his abdomen. A deep red stain pooled around the silver object, and Tim's hands were drenched in his DNA as he tried to apply pressure to the fatal wound.
Caroline slowly lifted her eyes past Tim, finding Klaus's violent blue eyes. She's seen Klaus sadistic and displeased. Those were nothing compared to the overwhelming ferocity she was witnessing now. It shook her to her very core.
She could tell he was having the same effect on the jocks around her. Tim tried to beg, but his mouth was a bit occupied by the blood rising up through his throat. The other two pleaded for leniency, but the inhumane look Klaus was displaying shut them up.
Without uttering a word, Klaus snapped two of the jocks' necks and twisted the knife further into Tim until it broke through his spine. The boy croaked, and then collapsed to the ground with a thud. Whether he was dead, or simply passed out from the pain, Caroline didn't know for sure, but she doubted he would survive a blow like that.
Before she could react, Klaus's hand was on her lower back, pressing her into him. He led her onto the dance floor, despite her squirming.
"What the hell are you doing?" Pushing against him was useless, but she refused to be intimidated by him.
"I would adjust your tone, love. Afterall, I did just save you from your own stupidity." His eyes were still heated as they swayed to the slow rhythm of the song playing. "I see you don't mind when other boys put their hands on you…"
Caroline knitted her brows together, her anger matching Klaus's now. It wasn't true and the way Klaus said it made her want to punch him infinitely more than she did on a regular basis. "Seriously? That just proves how little you know me."
Klaus glanced at her, confused. "What?"
She rolled her eyes. "You didn't actually think I was serious, did you? I was only acting that way to manipulate them. They're repulsive."
She could have sworn she heard Klaus release a breath of relief. His face softened now, all the built up rage from before had almost completely vanished. "And what exactly were you manipulating them into doing?"
Caroline bit down on her lip. This could either be a really good idea, or a really bad one. Klaus was Rebekah's brother for crying out loud. Surely, he was in on it, right? Although, Rebekah has been acting very hostile towards him lately, it could be part of the ruse. The Mikaelsons were infamous for playing with their food before ripping them to shreds.
Abruptly, the blonde tried to rip away from him. She had imagined slipping into the body of people, escaping undetected. However, Klaus's hands only locked down on her limbs insufferably tight and slammed her body back into his. She was pressed flush against his, given no space to breathe her own air.
"Listen very carefully, Caroline," Klaus warned, his voice grave. "You're going to hold onto me if you want to live."
She forced herself to remain calm externally, because internally, her heart was pounding far too hard to be considered healthy. "'If I want to live.' Is that a threat or a pickup line?"
Klaus grimaced in annoyance. "I know my sister. Look to your left and look to your right. They both want you dead. Same goes for the people standing in front and behind us. You would find yourself in the exact same predicament if you were standing in the upper right corner of the room, as well as the left."
Caroline let her eyes wander over toward the seemingly mundane students surrounding them. They each met her gaze as soon as it landed on them. What frightened her the most was that she believed Klaus. He was right.
She was right not to trust any of them; they were all weak minded traitors. But now, the only way to survive was to trust the least trustworthy person here.
"You're going to have to trust me, Caroline." Klaus crushed his lips against Caroline's. His lips were rough and desperate against hers. His burning lips electrified her. Her lips were engulfed in flames of pleasure and she moaned. She was completely taken off guard by his bold actions and gasped slightly. He took full advantage of her state of shock and thrusted his tongue into her mouth, ravishing her hot mouth.
Caroline resisted initially. Her mind had refused to shut off. This was Klaus we were talking about. The same guy who could simultaneously make her feel powerless and indestructible all at once. No matter what the circumstance, kissing him exposed too much weakness in her.
Kissing Klaus felt wrong, only the was the right kind of wrong. His tongue stroked every inch of her mouth and she could no longer fight the urge to taste him. He tasted like everything she pictured a sexy serial killer to taste like. It was dark and dominant.
Her tongue tangled with his as they dueled for control. Caroline's hands flew to the curls on Klaus's head, winding her fingers around the short curls to tug on them slightly. She's been wanting to do that for so long.
She groaned at the feeling of his hand twisted deep in her roots, while his other hand was wrapped tight around her waist, like he was trying to keep her there for the rest of eternity. Klaus hitched her legs tight around his waist and pressed the moist juncture between her legs against the hardening bulge in his pants.
Caroline inhaled sharply at the delicious friction he was creating. God, she just wanted to feel how hard he was for her.
Klaus dragged his mouth down to the nape of her neck, pressing scorching open-mouthed kisses along her sensitive skin. She sighed wantonly, and bent her head to the side to give him better access. He ran his hands up her velvety legs, stopping at her thighs. Moisture surged straight towards her center. She was so hot for him; there was no way she could put a stop to this.
Klaus began walking her off of the dancefloor and towards the exit, both of them fully enraptured in each other. Caroline had completely forgotten that they had an audience, and, at this this point, she didn't care. Her hormones were in overdrive and all she could think about was stripping Klaus bare for her to do with as she pleased.
She found his lips again and latched her lips to his once more. Her tongue swiped across his full lips, and Klaus hissed.
Klaus panted against her mouth and reluctantly removed his mouth from hers. His nose brushed against hers as he looked back at her with regretful eyes. "Caroline…" He smoothed down the side of her hair that he had bunched up before. "I need you to go back to my room, lock the door, and stay inside. Do you understand?" He set her back on the ground.
She was surprised she could even stand on two legs after that explosive make out session. Her mind was still frazzled. Caroline frowned. She knew that it was for the best, but she couldn't not feel a little bitter about getting all hot and bothered and not have him finish the job. She was heading into extremely dangerous territory. "Wait… where are you going?"
"To teach my sister a lesson that she won't soon forget." Klaus reached into his jacket pocket and then placed a bronze key into her hand. "Caroline, you need to go back to my room. Do you understand me?"
"Yeah." She nodded. Glancing back at him one more time, she headed in the opposite direction.
Caroline didn't know what that heart-stopping kiss meant, but she knew it was something that she could never return from.
Caroline tried to push thoughts of Klaus out of her mind. Her main concern was eliminating the current threats in her life. First, she had Rebekah, then came the vengeful staff members. She sure knew how to choose her enemies.
Her head snapped to her left and then her right. She stilled her motions as she analyzed her surroundings. She was certain that she'd just spotted a shadow from the corner of her eye, a moving one.
She wasn't alone.
"Klaus?" She gulped. She had a feeling that punishment he was going to give his sister would last more than five minutes. Caroline quickly spun around, facing the other direction. She could have sworn that she heard footsteps behind her.
The hallway suddenly felt far too narrow for her comfort. Her breathing grew heavy. The next moment, Caroline bolted as fast as she could in heels. She ran until she hit a dead end. She really should have paid more attention on that tour of the school.
"Shit," she cursed under her breath. Running a hand through her blonde locks, her eyes desperately searched for a way out. Her one free hand pushed against the walls, like she was expecting one of them to magically transform into a door. She had to try something. Besides, in this school, nothing was what it seemed.
"Don't bother," a familiar feminine voice approached.
Caroline was stricken and slowly turned to meet brown eyes that she'd once thought to be trustworthy. "Elena?"
Elena stalked towards her, wearing the exact same uniform Caroline had last seen her in. Her eyes were wild, like an animal that lived its entire life in the safari. Her usual silky brown hair was tangled in a knotted mess. "How does it feel? Sleeping in the lion's den? Walking around here on the Devil's arm? You've finally gotten everything you've ever wanted." She clapped bitterly.
Caroline's face burned in anger. She hadn't forgotten what Elena had done. She had some nerve approaching her again. "And here I thought you were getting over your sick obsession with me. I knew you were insane; I just didn't think you were also suicidal. You clearly want to die, or you wouldn't be here." Creeping closer to the brunette, Caroline eyed Elena like a predator to its prey.
"I'm suicidal?" Elena asked, exasperated. "Don't you get it, Caroline? Everything I've done was to protect you. I've done everything to help you, and all you've done is whore yourself out to Klaus."
Caroline's fist collided with the bridge of Elena's nose with a resounding crack.
Elena staggered, her hands flying to her broken nose. Fresh red liquid seeped through the cracks between her fingers. Her eyes rolled back as she was sent into a temporary daze.
Satisfaction settled into Caroline's chest, but it wasn't enough. An overwhelming urge to rip Elena inside out surged through her. She tackled Elena to the ground and started pounding her fists into her already bleeding face.
After several bruises began forming on Elena's face, she threw Caroline off. She started kicking Caroline in the stomach and picked her up to slam her into the wall behind her. The blonde groaned from the sharp pain in her stomach. "Caroline…" Elena's voice was strained from her fractured nasal. "Listen to me, please."
Caroline swiftly headbutted Elena, knocking her back to the ground. She was back on top of Elena and grabbed hold of her skull to bash it against the ground. Blood oozed out of the large gnash that Caroline had created on the back of Elena's head. Elena's eyes meandered all over her eye sockets, because she'd lost control of them as a result of Caroline's assault.
Elena's breathing had become shallow. She wasn't dead yet, but she would be, if Caroline had any say in it. Her manicured hands wrapped around Elena's small neck, and she grinned maliciously as she squeezed Elena's life out of her, inch by inch.
"Wait…" Elena choked out. Her words were so soft, but Caroline could still faintly make out what she was trying to say. "Klaus… is… a…"
She furrowed her brows. She couldn't make out the last word Elena had said. Curiosity had gotten the best of her and she'd loosened her grip just enough for Elena to clearly repeat the last word. "Klaus is a what?"
"Klaus… is… a-"
A large male patent lace up designer shoe came down on Elena's face at an almost impossibly fast speed, crushing her skull into a pancake. The sounds of crushing bones were followed by a dead silence.
Caroline flinched and ripped her hands away from the corpse's neck. Her eyes stayed glued to the foot that had delivered the most devastating blow that she never thought a foot could carry out. Slowly, she lifted her eyes to meet furious blue ones.
"Klaus," she breathed out. Rage was rolling off of his shoulders. He looked like ticking time bomb. Chills were running through her now. He was unstable- not that he was ever stable to begin with. But now, she really believed that she was as disposable as Elena was. She was playing a dangerous game.
Klaus couched down in front of her, inspecting her like he was looking to find something. It wasn't until his eyes were burning paths across her skin that she'd realized just how monstrous she appeared to be. Her hands and forearms were bathed in blood and her gold dress was marred by splotches of blood.
He brushed her golden curls out of her face, brushing the pads of his thumbs across the tops of her cheeks, avoiding the areas where blood freckled her smooth face. Caroline took in a sharp intake of breath. The intimate gesture was so jarring coming from someone so sadistic. "Are you alright?" he asked.
Still in shock from the recent events, Caroline only nodded.
"And how do you feel?" Klaus's blue eyes had darkened. His burning eyes bored into her, like he was looking past her blue pools, and peered inside her.
"Good," she uttered. In all honesty, she was on a high, but he probably already knew that. Taking someone's life always left her with the feeling that forbidden power had entered her system. It was incredible.
"Fantastic." Klaus looked down at her, like a wolf to a deer. He licked his lips, and Caroline could have sworn that the area around his eyes had darkened, just as his eyes had.
Klaus crushed his lips against hers and all other thoughts disappeared.
So I had maybe someone or a few someone's curious about a jealous Klaus. We got to see a peek of him here. I can tell you that this was just a taste and it certainly won't be the last of him we see. Let me know what you guys thought of this chapter, or what you would like to see in the future ;)
