What is a heart? Webster's defines it as both a noun and a verb. The official written definition of a heart is the organ in ones chest that pumps blood through your veins and arteries. This group of Covington students would define it in a much different way. The only definition suitable would be the bits and pieces of shattered remains left.
The news spread around quickly that John Cena, the golden boy, the quarterback, was now paralyzed from the waist down – and that was considered lucky. Eve Torres hadn't even awoken yet. Half an hour ago John had woken up to the harsh reality that he had to face head on for the rest of his life. The two things that he depended on most were now stripped away from him.
The first man to walk in his room was his best friend Randy Orton. He put on a brave face but inside he was dying. Why did this happen? That's all that ran through the man's mind. To all the people that this could've affected, why John? That guy never caused a problem with anyone, he never spoke out of context, and he picked you up if you cried; he was a naturally born leader.
Randy's upper lip began to quiver as they came in contact. John's expression…it was lifeless and gray, until he saw Randy. Cena's face lit up when his eyes met a friendly face. Finally a sense of comfort.
"Wow you look pitiful." The blonde said.
"Well it's been a crazy couple of days..."
"That is true."
The tatted man rubbed his thighs as he took a seat in one of the chairs. His eyes scanned over the bed. Strength is what he needed more than anything. He had to be strong for his friend but defeat was written all over his face. The quarterback's eyes narrowed as he glanced over. There was a brief heavy pause; Randy had no intention on speaking while Cena's mind was running wild trying to think of what to say next to settle him. Who would've thought something so simple would do the trick.
"I'm fine, man…" Randy's blue eyes looked up from the floor at those words, leading John to continue. "I mean would I prefer my legs? Definitely. Who wouldn't? But I mean isn't life a gift enough? It's all about managing the swings of it."
"How the hell are you so calm about this? You woke up not even an hour ago to something that's going to change your life. Now I think you're just feeding me what you want me to hear."
"I'm not feeding you anything. What can I say? My biggest concern right now is Eve. That's a girl with some serious heart. Her heart can just stop at any second. I'm awake and fine."
A small given smirk spread across his friends face. He held out his hand so the two could fist pound. "That's why you're the man."
A tiny smile grasped across the man's features. Their fists collided. All was semi-well, for now.
"What the fuck is wrong with Taxi drivers around here?" A redhead bugged while stepping into a yellow cab.
The duo spent almost 20 minutes trying to fan down cab drivers. To be fair it was an extremely busy time in the city. Roads were cluttered, cars were on top of cars, and street lights were changing quickly. Almost all of the cabs were already occupied by people going to and from work. Maria didn't care though this situation was serious. She needed to get to that hospital pronto she was tired of the travel.
Phil Brooks sat beside her exhausted. Neither of them have had a lick of sleep for hours. Maria had a huge fear of flying so there was no way that she was going to sleep on the plane and Punk couldn't leave her alone to stress.
Maria put her head on her friends shoulder and waited. Waited for the light to change from red to green, waited for the turn signal to cut off, waited for the pedestrians to cross, the list continued on. The tatted gentlemen tilted his head to lay a soft kiss on top of her head. Maria's red locks smelled like peppermint, he remembered that smell, he missed it.
"Thanks for inviting me."
"Oh please Phil, its Eve. Your true love. Our best friend. I had too."
Brooks began to play with the leather interior on the car with his nimble fingers. A sigh released from his lips as he looked at the woman. "I think I'm over her…or at least getting there."
"What? ….Who is she?"
His eyes shot up to the latina. The last thing he expected was such an immediate question. "Uh, what?"
"Who's the girl? Someone had to get you stuck off of Eve and I know it wasn't just Mike so who's the girl you're with or at least want to be with."
A soft chuckle arose from Phil's lips, he responded with a shaking head. "I'm not with any girl Maria."
"But you're trying to be."
His chuckle turned into a smirk/smile combo. "Maybe." He responded subtly leaving Maria to just smile in satisfactory.
The electrocardiogram in room 13L was at a steady pace. Beep…beep…beep…beep…beep – it never moved off rhythm, which was a good thing. As Mike sat by his girlfriend's hospital bed that was the only sound being made. Besides the few visits from the nurse and the frequent visits from other students Mike sat in a stable silence.
His blue eyes scanned around the room for a second. Balloons, stuffed animals, get well soon cards, and flowers surrounded the room. It would be a great sight to wake up to, if she would wake up. Then they scanned back onto the bed, there she laid so peaceful. He leaned forward and left a soft kiss on her bruised forehead. As Miz pulled away to sit up straight his body tightened, in attempt to loosen up he reached a hand out to grasp onto her much smaller lifeless hand. While rubbing the roof of it words began to flow out.
"Eve, what the hell are you doing to me here? I know you're stubborn but damn it it's like you're attempting to torture me. I know seeing me squirm amuses you but come on just wake up…"
Mike stared down his girlfriend as if he expected that to magically wake her up. Eagerly he waited. Beep…beep…beep…beep…beep.
"What the hell did you do this for Eve? Fuck. I told you not to go, did I not? I knew it was a bad idea but of course you're stubborn and didn't listen and I hate that about you." A bitchy chuckle released from his cold lips, his head turned and stared at the wall. "No actually. I really love that about you. Which is why I hate it and which is why I hate you because I fucking love you so much. You see the problem here?"
Quickly Mike dropped the women's hand and stood on both feet. The tone in his voice began to rise and his words began to tangle together more just to make even less sense.
"Why did you do this to me Eve? This isn't me! I don't stay in hospital rooms from morning until dark. I don't fall in love with people. Sometimes it was easier that way. Do you even know how I'm feeling right now? No of course not. I feel like I'm crumbling and wasting away. I don't feel like this I'm The Miz!"
It was as if he was looking for some sort of dialogue, a response, a fight but that wasn't coming. His eyes began to cloud up and tears were forming. Unable to take the returning silence Mike stormed out of the room. His hands were trembling and his heart was racing. While his feet were on the move eyes were on him. Cody Rhodes sat in the corner of the hallway, his heart felt like it decreased in size as he stormed out. Quickly he arose to his feet to chase after his classmate.
"Hey man, where are you going?" Cody asked as he grabbed ahold of his arm.
"Get off me dude!" The blonde jerked away from him with a heavy force.
"Sorry, just wanted to see if you were fine"
"No I'm not fine! And you know that so why are you asking? You want a reaction out of me or something? Get lost." Fought Miz as he pushed the man away from him with a heavy force. His feet collided with the ground to leave the receiver in the dust just to watch.
Brie and AJ had a more upbeat afternoon. Although the back of their minds were focused on John, Eve, Phil, Randy, and the rest of the gang they had to push that to the side and focus on life. The two sat a local Starbucks with some frappes in hand.
It was a good place to relax and just hang out. It was always mellow and it gave you that sense of relief of leaving your home. You could kick your feet up (literally) and give out the good juicy dirt but this time instead of the dirt the two girls were discussing any foreign topics to avoid the typical discussion of boys. Just because they aimed to strive away from that topic didn't mean they wouldn't land right back on it.
"Nikki wants to come visit again. Based on how that went last time I don't know if I want her too."
"Well with everything else going on right now you don't need any sibling drama to add to it."
"Apparently she's back with her ex-boyfriend, let's see how long that lasts."
AJ pulled her feet from the floor and stashed them on top of one of the bar stools. She tried to get comfortable before approaching that topic that wasn't supposed to be discussed. "Now that you've had time to think about it properly…Randy - are you willing to go down that road?
The twin began to grow tense. She laughed faintly and then aimed for her number one stress reliever, biting her nails. "You know, it's funny… When I heard about the accident the first thing I thought about was Randy. Was he okay? Was he alive? Until I knew my whole mind literally blurred up. I lost feeling all over. I was mortified. When I found out he was okay my whole body cooled down. I haven't felt such relief in a while."
A small smile curved on Aprils lips at that. The smile fell with the few unexpected words that came next.
"I can't handle feeling like that again. I know how people with drug problems are. You could be fine for a year, five years, twenty years and for one moment you could relapse and your whole life could be on the line. I can't live in that constant fear, I just can't… I shouldn't have too."
"So what are you going to do Brie? Not be his friend anymore…"
"Usually I would say of course not… but I can't risk it. I've done it, I've been there. I have to think about me."
Lee didn't have any words to say about that, she literally couldn't come to an appropriate response. Her friends mind seemed pretty made up. All that was needed on her part was comfort. So that's it then, and it of an era.
Well that's the end of that chapter! What were your thoughts? When everyone is together in one area I try to get snig bits of everyone in short little scenes with the ame impact as a much larger scene. I hope you enjoyed!
