Arc 3: Tensions Arise!

Chapter 18:

Betrayal

A/N: I hope you have taken to reading the author's chapter. I'm starting to pull away from the initial development of the back ground into the first true arc but we need a little more.

Anzai had taken it upon himself to take a morning walk. The sun has just begun to rise above the peaks in the distance. Orange and yellow brighten the morning sky as the sun pushed the darkness of night away to birth the day. His hands were in his pockets of his sage robe as he ventured through the village. Not many people were awake yet except for most shop keepers and those on duty. Taking a deep breathe he let the crisp morning air fill his lungs. It had been some time he had ascended into sage hood and he enjoyed it to say the least. Even though it had some disadvantages. For one he needed to consume more water to stay hydrated then normal. His natural chakra made his body much hotter then the normal person and it's not that he minded. Just that he was hospitalized twice for severe dehydration.

Passing the for the most part of unopened shops he made his way towards the Kage tower. It towered above the village. He couldn't see anyone but he could sense the hidden figures. This was however due to the way he sensed people by sending his chakra though the air. He was sure he wasn't sensing all of them. Once he was inside the tower he swiftly passed through the lobby as he made his way up stairs to his soon to be father in laws office.

Naruto arrived to his office not to long ago. He usually arrived around the this time everyday but it's because he liked to get started on his days work before taking a nap. Sitting in his large office chair he began shuffling through the papers on the desk.

"Damn where could it be?" He asked out loud to himself.

After he couldn't find what he was looking for he looked under the folders and even through the in and out chubby tray on the right hand corner of the desk. He sighed heavily, this is not how he wanted to start his day.

"Wait a second..." He pondered as he picked up one of the mission forms that needed approved on his stack of jumbled paper. He looked closely at the corner before he noticed it was two papers stuck together.

"There you are!" He exclaimed happy he found what he had been looking for the last few minutes. In his hand was the form to promote the individuals who passed the chunin exams. Normally he would of done this sooner but due to the "incident" while in Kiri they had to postpone it.

Zacc didn't even bother to knock he just opened the door to the Kage's office. It wasn't that he felt entitled to doing so it was Naruto usually already knew he was there. Patience wasn't Zacc's strong suits.

"Good morning Hokage-sama" he greeted the fox man who didn't even look up at him when he walked in.

"Hiding from my daughter again?" He said without any emotion in his voice, he was to busy going over what was on what he was looking at.

"You know if I was hiding I would just go to the hot springs like you and the Uchiha do" he said casually which caught the attention of the Kage behind the desk. Now the main reason he hid there was because it was one of the last places his wife would find him since the only time he actually went to the springs was to hide. The blonde only looked up at him before giving his trade mark grin before looking down again. With the swiftness of his signature he looked pleased with what ever he did. The sage only looked at him questioningly.

"I'm finally doing the chunin promotions if you're wondering" the man said before continuing. "Please go get Neo Nara and Haruto Umimo if you would then return here." This only confused him because Haruto didn't even make it to the third round of the exams. However he knew better to question his Kage. He may of been brash and irrational all the time but he was a Kage none the less. He simply nodded and pivoted on his left foot to leave the office.

"Kamin got him to stop arguing I guess" he chuckled reminding how he usually questioned why before following an order. The blonde simply put the promotion he just signed off on in the finished paperwork before attempting to find another paper.

Stepping out of the tower he took off with great speed. Since it was still so early he decided to just run through the still nearly empty streets. Out of the market district he went straight to the Nara compound. Since he hadn't seen Haruto in quite some time he figured it would be better to find Neo first. There was no chance he was even awake yet. He smirked knowing how lazy his friend was. It took nearly no time at all to make it to the compound district and soon he encroached onto his destination. In a split second he came to a halt as he stood out front of the large metal gate to the Nara compound. He didn't know why but every time he stepped foot onto this compound he felt at peace. Well not truly at peace just unusually relaxed. No wonder this family was so calm and lazy if they felt like this all the time.

Reaching out with his hand he knocked on the large gate. Even if he was a friend it was certainly rude especially at this hour. After waiting for a moment just glancing through the gate towards the main house a shadow just inside the gate seemed to grow out of the ground. He was taken back he certainly did not expect this. The shadow grew to stand a little taller then him before dissipating to reveal one Shikamaru Nara.

"You know you could of just came in and knocked on the front door" he said with a sigh. It was to early for him however he did have to get to work. Just because his team had time off doesn't mean he did.

"My apologizes Nara-sama just being polite since it was still early" he said politely. Noticing the jounin was dressed in his usual outfit with his vest.

"I know but still it's troublesome" he said with a sigh. He opened the gate and started to walk past him. "Just go on in and get him I'm sure Temari will be happy to see you" he said before turning down the street towards the center of town. He only smiled as he started to walk towards the main house. Once arriving at the door he slightly hesitated before letting himself in. The house was actually quite lavished and you could tell it's been here for quite sometime. He took off his sandals and set them aside from the door as to be polite. The front door was connected to a large hallway that had pictures and decor on the walls. Shortly after leaving the main door there was a door way to his right which lead to the Living room however he quite walking straight. At the end of the hall it turned left into the main hall and directly in front of him was the kitchen. The kitchen was certainly to say the least beautiful, it had a kitchen island with a dark green limestone counter top like the other counter tops. All the wood was a dark stained red oak which gave the room a dark forest look.

"Good morning Zacc-san" he heard the soft voice of Temari who was cutting vegetables. He watched her use the knife with such grace and skill it never ceased to amaze him.

"Good morning Temari-sama" he greeted her back before glancing out the large glass door to his right that lead to the outside porch. Sitting outside was Shikuku Nara the current clan head and Neo.

"It's quite a miracle he's awake this early" the house wife laughed softly before rinsing her veggies in a strainer. Zacc smiled he always liked Neo's mom she was always so sweet to him even though most people said she had a temper of a sandstorm. He made his way to the doorway before openly the sliding door and stepping out. The two shadow users were sitting across from one another playing some type of board game he has never seen before.

"Good morning Nara-sama" he said respectfully before watching the older man move one of his pieces towards the center of the board.

"You know Yagami there is not real need for such formality when here, it's not like we don't know you" he said awaiting the move of his grandson.

"I'll take it since you're here this early either you're hiding from Kamin or we have a mission" he said before moving one his pieces on the board. Anzai still didn't understand what type of game they were playing he just watched and attempted to learn something.

"Yes the Hokage wanted me to grab you and Haruto to meet him about something. He said he just signed the chunin promotion and he probably wants to promote the laziest genin" he said with a smirk before the elder moved one of his back row pieces before using it to jump around the board and place it near one of Neo's larger pieces.

"Checkmate, better go see what Naruto wants this early" the man said before standing up and walking down the porch. He yawned and signaled he was more then likely going to take a nap. Neo look bewildered he had no idea how he could of lost so badly. He only grunted as he stood up and walked inside followed by his friend.

"Mom Zacc and I are more then likely going on a mission" he said passing his mother and venturing door the hall.

"Well be careful honey" she said brightly before Zacc saw him return down the main hall and motioned him to follow him to the door. He noticed his friend with and gather his weapons pouch and his belt since he was already dressed for the day. After both of them put on there sandals they left the house and the compound. Both walked down the street to leave the district since the residential district was across the other side of the village. Both were quiet as they traveled.

It took awhile but they made it to the part of the residential district where Haruto lived. Walking up the steps to the door Neo rasped his hand across the wooden frame of the door. It wasn't long before an older man they knew as Iruka Unimo answered the door.

"O good morning boys, here for Haruto?" He asked opening the door for the two to walk inside.

"Yes Iruka-san we have a mission, is he awake yet?" He asked the scar faced man.

"I'm not sure I'll go check his room for you" he said before turning around to walk of the stairs which was right in front of the main door. They stood there waiting noticing it was a nice simple home despite the Konoha snake lovers living here. For some reason he expected something odd to be here. Without skipping a beat he saw an older purple haired women appear from the other side of the hall before turning away from them to walk into a room. As if not noticing they were there. She stood roughly five foot five and has her purple hair pinned up as usual. She wore a pair of black shorts and only her mesh shirt as if she hadn't gotten ready for the day yet. However both boys noticed the women's shapely curves and very round back side.

"Well damn.." Both of them could only think to themselves before yet saw Haruto come down the stairs wearing his combat attire without his trench coat. Rubbing his eyes he slowly descended and put on his sandals.

"Alright whatever we"re doing let's go" he said with a yawn it was clear his fAther had to wake him up for them. All three of them left the house and took off towards the Kage tower.

"Haruto your mom is hot by the way" Zacc said with a devilish grin hopping to get some rise out of his friend. However he certainly didn't show like it bothered him.

"Shut up" he yawned as they sped down the road.

Naruto sat in his office as the three genin walked into his office. He reshuffled his papers before addressing them. Not waiting to less track of his current paperwork.

"First things first, Neo Nara you are hereby appointed the rank of chunin" he said awaiting for a reaction but nothing came. "Figures" he thought to himself before watching the shadow user sigh. "Now for the reason you are here. I know you three process abilities past mere genin so I have decided to give you a recognizance mission, however Neo is the team leader and as such his word is law during the mission" he said watching the other two boys nod in acknowledgement before continuing. "We have had some reports of Kiri moving their troops so I wanted a small task force to walk our border and signal for help In case of a problem. This is a week deployment and I expect you three to arrive at the western edge of the border before late afternoon" he said only to get nods from the three.

"Hai, Hokage-sama" all three said as the Kage held out a piece of paper for Neo. He only glanced at it before putting it in his left pocket. Before the three of them left the office and the blonde returned to his work.

"Meet at the village gate in one hour" The shadow user said before shushinning out of sight. Leaving both of them to shrug and walk separate walks to prepare for the trip.

Walking into his compound he noticed the lights were on, his guessed his blonde fiancé was awake. Opening the door an venturing down to the living room he saw her laying on the couch reading her dark covered book. She simply flipped a page before looking up to smile at him. Her hair was a mess it was apparent she just woke up seeing her in the same pajamas from last night.

"Good morning" he said to her and he walked over and placed a kiss on the top of her head before walking to his study.

"Good morning" she said with a hint of sleep hidden in her tone as if not fully awake but she only smiled softly as him as she returned to her book. Upon reaching the study he noticed the door was slightly open. Pushing it open he revealed his younger brother sitting in the leather bound chair next to the fire place book in hand.

"I'm surprised you're awake Kira" he said to his brother before sitting behind his desk and opening the top right drawer. Pulling out his storage scroll and sat it on the desk.

"Ya I had to take Kena to the gate, she had to return home today. So since I'm already awake I'm trying to decide whether or not to take the position the Hokage offered him the other day" he said casually flipping another page.

At this Zacc began to ponder. Why did his younger brother seem so calm lately. It wasn't to long again he was attempted to be murder by an entire nation. Not only that but his two other siblings were here also. He just didn't know right not, none of them did.

Anzai was standing at the village gates waiting for his team mates. He wore his forehead protector and his new attire. The black pro-fit windbreaker with the kanji on the back, black anbu pants, and his belt. A weapons pouch on his left thigh and one on the back right side of his belt. Standing there at the entrance he saw people coming and going. Tourists and civilians coming to venture the market. Also several teams have passed him in both directions. It was such a peaceful place and he could get use to it. Looking back towards the village he saw both his team mates walking towards him. Noticing they had a new wardrobe as well. Neo had dawned a chunin vest he figured he went to the armory to pick up. While Haruto had ditched his old coat for a new black one with fit him much better.

"About time guys" he said turning towards the gate as they pasted him. The three of them walked out of the gate and took to the higher branches of the tree tops. Running at a good steady speed they ran towards the border of the Land of Fire ready for anything they might find.

Kamin had just finished her daily routine of getting cleaned up and dressed for the day as she walked out the gate of the compound. Her long silk woven hair was straightened and was tied at the bottom with a pink ribbon. She hummed to herself as she made her way down the street towards her friend Akemi's house. The sun was gaining height in the sky as it approached early afternoon and the wind was still as she approached the Hyuuga's main gate. A branch house member opened the gate for her as the other guard bowed to her. She simply smiled. She never understand why the Hyuuga had to have all of these ancient traditions still. Most were unneeded. However she brushed it off as she followed the cobblestone walk way to the main house. She could see people tending the garden and other training in the front yard as the norm for them at this time of day. Arriving at the front door it opened as she approached. Standing in the door way was her friend who she had come to she.

"Good morning Kamin, what brings you here?" She smiled at her blonde friend as she motioned for her to come in.

"Well since we still have another week before we are active again I was wondering if you wanted to hang out" she said as she entered. Akemi closed the door behind her and both made their way down the hall before coming to a beautiful garden. The main building had a court yard type area where lay the garden.

"Well I certainly have nothing to do, and it's always nice to see you" she said before both girls walked to a small koi pond in the garden where they both sat on a stone hand crafted bench. Both girls have had plenty of going on with the last few months. Kamin was engaged to the new clan head and had been struggling changing certain aspects of the compound she deemed hideous. While Akemi has still been looking for an outsider to marry into the Hyuuga.

"So how is Anzai anyways? I haven't seen much of him since the exams" she spoke softly as she stared into the waters surface.

"He's fine, his emotions are starting to balance out more since him and Kira started to get along. It's hard to believe they use to never speak to one another" the blonde spoke before bumping shoulders with her friend across from her. "So Miss Hyuuga have you acquired a suitor yet?" She said in a mock tone just causing Akemi to jab her in the ribs causing Kamin to laugh.

"No I haven't, I've tried talking to a few boys but none are the type of person I want to be with" she said before looking absent mindingly towards the ground which didn't go unnoticed.

"Well then let's go find one" Kamin said before standing up and started to turn towards the door before turning back to see what Akemi would do. She stood and made her way to The blonde.

"Very well but remember I have certain tastes" she said indefinitely before both girls started back down the hall to leave the compound. She had a point in the entire time she knew the Hyuuga heiress she has never seen her crush on anyone here in the village but then again being the heiress to a clan she wasn't able to be out much when they were younger.

In a dark room stood a figure clad in black wearing a the mask of an animal. The room was deep under ground, any sound the figure made would not be heard unless someone was approaching the sub level area. The flame light of the torches on the walls were the only source of light. The room was full of dust and the air was stale but it couldn't be helped as he dug through boxes in the room looking for something. Looking to his right the entire north side of the room had a wall entirely of lock boxes. The figure only smiled as they approached the collection of lock boxes. Drawing out a senbon they got to work picking the locks.

After some time the person managed to open a few of them but to their dismay it didn't find it was looking for. Hearing a set of clicks the lock opened. Opening another box they withdrew a small box. The figure slowly checked the outside to see if there was any danger in opening it. Before to long of not finding anything the lid was lifted. The figure raised it's eye brows in amazement not that you could see it under the mask. Inside the small box roughly the size of a fist was none other than the necklace of the senju. The Hokage must of hide the treasure of the Shodiame and Godiame down here after she died not wanting to lose an important piece of treasure. Snatching it out of its box they quickly a stuffed the priceless item into the pocket inside the classical black anbu outfit which was located next to the right breast. Stuffing the box back into the locker they made to another one hoping to find more then just that and the original target. Box after box had been opened and it had taken quite some time. Nothing of to much importance could be found. Just some relics of some deceased clans and family scrolls. The figure was interested in none of this. Finally with the click of another lock they opened the door.

"Finally.." The figure said in a dark hushed tone. You could tell they were pleased after the few hours it took to even get into this room. Inside the locker was a large metal canister. The locker it self was much deeper than the others. With a careful touch the black figure raised it's hand to withdraw the object. Before taking the sling that was connected to it and putting it over his shoulders so it was placed carefully to their back. It was roughly three feet long and seven inches in diameter. With the object in possession they made their way out of the room with haste. Passing the door way with a large metal door they ran down the torch light stone hall into the darkness.

The Hokage was signing off on the last of his weekly paper work in his office. Placing the papers in the tray on his desk before letting out a sigh. It had always been his dream to reach the title of Hokage but he never dreamed of all this paper work that was required to keep the village running. Upon retracting his hand he felt a pulse of chakra. One of his seals had been breeched.

"Gecko signal the anbu we have a intruder!" He said before using his father's signature jutsu to leave the room. The man referred to as Gecko appeared from the darkness on the corner of the room before bounding over the Kage's desk and out the window.

"This is Gecko, alert level black, I repeat level Black. This is not a drill!" He screamed into his radio as he lept from roof top to roof top. As he ran through the village scanning the buildings and the ground below for the intruder. Gecko by his build was clearly a man in great physical condition. He was roughly one hundred and eighty pounds with a lean build. Wearing only the standard anbu uniform and his mask there was nothing else to make him more distinguished.

Naruto appeared in a black torch lit hall deep under ground. In front of him the door to the cache was left wide open, he carefully made his way into the room In stance ready to fight but to no avail the room was empty. There was tipped over boxes and open lockers but what drew him closer was the one locker in the wall that was deeper then the others. His eyes widen as he realized what they were after. His fists tightened as he flashed out of the room back to the village.

Kamin and Akemi were walking down the main road in the center of the village when they saw anbu in clusters and even in defensive position throughout the area. Both girls took off full well knowing if the anbu were out in the open like this there was a major problem. Both girls took to the roof in front of them to get a clearer view. They saw that the village walls were lined with not only the anbu but as well as the shinobi still within the village. One of the anbu landed in front of them.

"Kamin Uzuamaki, Akemi Hyuuga there is an intruder within the village look for them and kill on sight." The woman wearing a pigeon mask ordered before taking off in a sprint again. Both girls complied and started towards the village gate. Both girls ran when they saw a black clad figure wearing a mask however on his black was a large circular object.

"Akemi down there!" The blonde said while both girls followed the man via roof tops while he ran down the street below. He was in a hurry as he dodged and danced between civilians. In this situation no anbu would be doing such a thing. The Hyuuga girl activated her byakugan and scanned the area.

"Kamin it has to be them they're evading all the anbu positions" he said in a hurried tone as they reached the last roof before leaping off into the entrance to the village. The village entrance was a large open area that held a large public park and a small pond just inside the gate. It was large enough to allow the many people who came in and out of the village.

The man was half way to the gate from the break in the market district before they hit the ground. Finally in a plan view the man was running even faster to evade the ninja who were now alerted to his presence. Before anyone could reaction a man with long silver hair appeared in front of the figure kunai in hand. Kakashi lept at him slashing at the mask. The man attempted to spin out of the way but to no avail. The blade sunk deep into the forehead of the mask and you could hear the cutting of metal. After making the attack the mask crumbled and fell from the mans face revealing his identity along with the newly made slash mark in his forehead protector. The man only grinned as he followed his momentum to pass Kakashi.

"Hideaki!" He gasped knowing full the son of his former living friend. The man was intercepted by shinobi only for a kunai to appear in his right hand and cut them down. The brick laid road was splashed in a wave of crimson as he pushed more towards the gate. Kamin only clenched her muscles as she activated her new ability. Appearing to the man side she struck at him only for Hideaki to duck under her arm and keep running.

"Better luck next time kid" he smirked as he neared the large open gate. In front of his eyes a yellow flag appeared to reveal Naruto standing in the gate way.

"Going somewhere Sarutobi" he growled his eyes blazing dark red slitted vertically. His fist unclenched to reveal his finger nails had sharpened into claws. Causing the man to slide to a halt.

"Well if it isn't the Kyuubi boy" he said darky before running through some hand seals and slamming his hand on the ground. A plum of smoke appeared to reveal a large snake. In one swift motion the snake swallowed the Sarutobi before naruto pushed off with great speed before ramming his claws into the snakes head. Just a fraction of a second before he would of connected the snake reverse summoned vanishing in a plum of smoke just as it came leaving the extremely angry Kage standing at the village gate.

"Damn it Hideaki!" He screamed as he returned back to his normal form. Naruto was left standing in the street. Before him seven of his shinobi laid dead with various slash marks that allowed the bricked street to be painted red. Sadness overtook his eyes as he started to feel the pain of loss. Looking up he saw his former sensei standing down the road with a look of sorrow just as him. Kakashi in his older age had grow to feel more connected with his emotions which started to develop as his time as short time as a Kage until his student was ready for the mantle. Terrified civilians were seen everywhere around him. Most were cowering in fear of what had just happened around them. He could see small child clinging to their parents crying at the bloodshed they had just witnessed. It wasn't long before he regained control of his emotions and looked to his daughter and her friend. The world had gone silent only for a moment before the medical corp had appeared with their gear. Nine medical ninja had shown up with body bags and cleaning supplies for the tragic loss. Naruto could only stand there as he watched his former subordinates corpses being properly moved. He couldn't understand how Hideaki could of done such a thing. He had many friends in the village and was a decorated ninja. Just why couldn't he of seen this coming. Before he could lose himself in questioning thought he felt the hand of someone on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry Naruto but it couldn't be helped. Who would of thought he was capable of such a thing, there had to be a reason" his former teacher said trying to console the man.

"I just don't understand" the blonde man trailed as he looked to the sky. The sun had risen to its apex in the sky now as it's light radiated down upon him.

Kakashi had walked to the residential district a look of sorrow in his eyes that betrayed his posture. He had come to a tan colored home with elegant oak trim around it's frame. Remembering upon the return from the fourth war how he had helped build his fallen comrades home with the others. It lay in the lower part of the district. Since Nagato had leveled the village creating a massive crater part of the district was lower then the other. It had been over two decades since the death of Asuma and he would never of dreamed of having to bring this type of news to Kurenai. Walking up the stone steps to the door he raised his hand to knock only to hesitate. Thoughts ran through his mind an memories of the past. He swallowed before knocking on the door. It echoed through the wood and it wasn't look before a woman appeared at the door. Before him Kurenai stood before him in her civilian clothes, a yellow summer dress with no knowledge of who he was she appeared to be a simple woman who lived in the village.

"Kakashi what's wrong? I saw the anbu deployed and no one knows what's going on?" She questioned as she moved away from the entrance opening the door allowing him in. The door remained ajar as he entered and he looked at her with sunken eyes losing the words in his thought. She knew something was wrong and thoughts ran through her mind scared something had happened to her son.

"Kurenai I..."

Naruto stood in the center of the council chambers. In turn all members of the council in there seats with Kira in place of Anzai in such a emergency it was allowed since only two members existed in the clan. Looks of worry and desperation on there faces knowing full way of the situation.

"Today Hideaki Sarutobi son of Asuma Sarutobi fallen shinobi of Konohakagure and Kurenai Sarutobi has defected from the village. He has slain his former comrades and stolen valuable top secret items from the possession of the village. He is to be named a nuke-nin an placed in the bingo book with kill on sight. He is not to be taken lightly" ordered their Kage as he stood in the center of the room voice booming with absolute conviction. Around him all the clan heads and Kira nodded in understanding not to question their Hokage.

"As such he had broken into ROOTs old compound and raided my hidden cache I had placed there. As he would of needed information of such things the village is on lock down until I deem otherwise understand?" His voice demanded from the clans with no allowance of a response. "In turn he can concluded there is at least one more traitor in our mist and everyone including civilians are to be inspected throughly" he commanded. Looking to watch to leaders of the council. With nods of approval he continued once more. "Hideaki Sarutobi has stolen medical samples of Kekki genkai clans currently deceased and living within the village. We can concluded he has aligned with the Village of the Sound and Mist. This is an act of war and is to be treated as such. Along with the blood and tissue samples he has stolen the heirloom of the Senju which has the ability to surpress tailed beasts" he stated no emotion in his tone as the clan heads widen in fear of what they had just learned. The heirloom of the Senju is priceless to the village and with the medical samples of kekki genkai this was extremely bad news for the village. With no further needed discussion the blonde man in the center of the room turned and walked out of the room with a strong posture they knew what was to come in future days.

Else where in the village the silver maned man consoled the crying mother as she fell to her knees and sobbed losing the ability to breathe.

A/N: This was the beginning to the true Arc. Trouble has set in very quickly but it raises many questions does it not? I'm not currently aware of the gender of Asuma's child but for this story it has been set to male.

I apologize for the lateness I have been adjusting back to civilian life some more and started a job at the casino until I return to college this fall. I will write more and start the next chapter now. Some things such as the plot of the main story are very clear now...or are they?

Please remember I have written this from my phone and have no correct way to format this chapter and some to come. I will go back and fix all previous and new chapters when able so please bear with me awhile and I hope you enjoy.
