A/N: Announcement down at the bottom. Read the chapter first, though! Enjoy!
Apollo and Athena turned from the street onto the docks. This is the place Blake told them to check for him, but she didn't say why this place in particular. Apollo walked to the guard railing, and looked over the port. The port looked like a minor hurricane hit it. A sizeable crater was made into the concrete, and a storage unit sat in the corner, bent on one side of it.
"What happened here?" Athena thought out loud.
"A fight." Apollo and Athena spun around to see the owner of the voice standing there. He was much taller man standing there. He wore a suit, and a red tie. His size intimidated Apollo, but didn't show any fear.
"What sort of fight?" Apollo asked, sticking out his chest. The man avoided him, and walked beside the guard railing.
"A fight with your client, Blake. She just walked up, and attacked a good man. He decided to retaliate, and, before help could arrive, she almost killed him. But he managed to get away."
"Our client?! Who did she attack?!" Athena asked, nervous of his answer.
"She attacked a brilliant man by the name of Roman Torchwick." He answered, brimming with confidence.
"...Isn't that a crime boss…?" Apollo sweated.
"A… a crime boss?! No no no, he's a misunderstood hero. You need to know his full history to see why he did all those bad things. He's changed since then." The man replied. But before Apollo could ask his name, he just walked off.
Apollo and Athena watched as he walked off for a moment, as some commotion started going on behind them. A market man was trying to sell watermelons, but it appeared that someone had been caught trying to steal one. Apollo and Athena squinted to see a man, in jeans, a white shirt, and a tail. They both took off into a sprint, trying to reach him before he ran off.
"You didn't pay, you thief!" The man yelled.
"I did pay! You have to be joking me! I got the money this morning!" The man they were trying to talk to argued back.
"Thief! Thief!" The man called out at last. Suddenly, 6 sailors that had been standing near there circled the faunus, still holding the melon.
"You have got to be kidding me…" The faunus complained. Then, all 6 of them charged, arms extended, hands ready to grab him. In 1 split second, though, he jumped into the air, over the tallest of the sailors. The 6 ran into each other, colliding at the center.
The faunus landed feet first, then took off in the direction of Apollo and Athena. They quickly stopped, and ran the same way he was headed. He had made major ground by the time they had finally turned around.
"Hey! Sun!" Apollo called out to him as he neared. Sun didn't even give an eye towards the running red suite, and went past him.
"We need to talk to you about Blake!" Athena called out as he was just within earshot. He stopped on a dime, and looked at the lawyers as they caught up.
"Man, you're fa-" Apollo tried to say.
"Where's Blake!?" He demanded from the lawyers.
"Hold on, let us catch our breath…" Apollo panted, as both he and Athena had their hands placed on their knees. A few minutes and a bit of walking into somewhere more private later, Sun asked again.
"Where is she!?" He asked, more desperate now.
"She's in jail, for now." Athena answered, "We were wondering if you knew anything about this."
"Blake…" Sun looked at the ground. He then looked up at the lawyers, and told everything, "It was 2 nights ago. We, as in Blake and I, were scoping out something that the White Fang were doing just outside of the forrest. Suddenly, one of them spotted us, and took a shot. Knowing we've been spotted, we had no other choice than to knock them all out. We normally do this in full control, but…" Sun took a breath, "She was… acting different that night. She seemed so much more angry.
When he revealed ourselves to them, it was like our usual routine: I took the left side, and she took the right. Once I was done, I looked over to see her chasing one of the guards off. But it wasn't a guard. It looked like a normal, everyday person. He, or she, ran off into the forest, trying to avoid Blake. That's all I could see though." And now, with his testimonial over, he slumped down against the alley, his shoulders drooped low.
"Blake…" Apollo said softly, wanting to give up then and there. Athena remained silent, her eyes concentrated.
"What chance does she have of not getting a life sentence?" Sun piped up.
"I don't know, Sun… I just-"
"She won't." Athena said, her eyes now ablaze. "Sun, do you remember what you just said?"
"...her life sentence?" Sun didn't know what she meant, so just gave her what he just said.
"No! The part about Blake chasing the guy into the forest!"
"...Yeah?"
"Did she only chase 1 person?"
"Yeah…" Sun didn't know where she was going with this, but his ears perked up a bit.
"Apollo, how many bodies were at the crime scene?"
"The coroner told us two… AH!" Apollo finally realized where she was going with her train of thought.
"So now the question is…" Athena started.
"Where did the 2nd body come from?" Sun answered shily.
"Yeah!" Athena fist pumped into the air, only to be put down.
"But… in the news this morning, they said only 1 body was there…" Sun confessed.
"That could just be a mis-understanding!" Athena tried to convince him otherwise.
"Athena, remember how the bodies were laid out? Anyone could've tellen a distinct difference." Apollo concluded.
"..." Athena couldn't respond. It seems as though it was over…
"...But I'm not convinced. There had to have been a way that first body was there, and the second body was added later. I don't know how, but we'll find a way." Apollo said boldly.
Just then, the bell tolled 7 times. "7 p.m. already?!" Athena asked, surprised.
"Well, I guess we'd better get to the hotel Athena." Apollo sighed.
"I can take you guys there, if you want." Sun offered.
"...Sure, please." Athena asked, and Sun, now with a new smile on his face, led the way to the local hotel they were staying at.
Elsewhere…
"Well, Mr. Wright, I believe we have covered quite a bit of ground." Edgeworth looked at all the notes they had made on the table.
"Let's run through it 1 more time, so we can get right to work tomorrow." Phoenix decided. "Okay, so the White Fang was started by Ivan Carsow, a violent revolutionist. Kinda like Castro, minus the pigs."
"No puns, Wright. But, anyway, Ivan was responsible for the riot on his day of death. It took a high total of 117 lives of both faunus and humans. BUT he was not killed at the riot. He went back to the Project 57 building, and was killed there."
"That means it had to have been someone who had access to the building that could kill him, as he died from a close stab wound."
"Now that leaves us with a few things to find: Who had access to the building, who had motive to kill him, and what was so special about Project 57 to go back there." Phoenix concluded.
"I'm not going to lie, Phoenix. We have a lot of work to go through."
"C'mon Edgey, you're a hard enough worker. We'll get through it in no time!"
"What did I tell you about calling me Edgey?!"
"Jeeze, chill out." Phoenix chuckled off the harsh remark from Edgeworth. They both shared a grin, but Edgeworth decided that this was the time to break the news.
"Wright, I need to tell you something."
"Sure, what's up?"
"Wright, this is serious." Phoenix sat up in his chair, and gave full attention to the head prosecutor. "Earlier, before you walked in, someone walked in. His name was Adam, and he asked for me to take the Blake case for the White Fang." Phoenix's eyes shot up.
"The… White Fang…"
"Yes, Wright. Do you have the same feeling that I have?"
"...Wait… you don't think that…"
"I think that this case has something to do with the case at hand. Something they want to keep 'hush hush'." Edgeworth concluded. They sat their, running the possibilities in their heads.
"Edgeworth, cancel any appointments you had tomorrow. They need this information for this case. You and know this, more personally than anyone else." Their memories both flashed back to the DL-6 case, and Edgeworth's former mentor, Manfred von Karma.
"Wright, while I cancel all the appointments I have, try to get into contact with your client. Use my name, they'll grant phone access. Ask her about Adam and anything she knows about Project 57."
"Already on it." Wright used his phone, and had the jail's number already in his contacts. He went out into the hallway, so he and Edgeworth's conversations won't get tangled.
"Hello, this is the Vale Jail, the only rhyme that doesn't pay the time?" Phoenix a bead of sweat run down his forehead. He knew that voice. Almost all too well… oh great…
"Larry? It's Phoenix."
"Phoenie my boy! How's life?"
"Just peachy, now-"
"Just peachy? Oh c'mon, why not orangy, or appley?"
"Larry, I can't-"
"Why Nick? Are you discriminate against your fruits?"
"DAMNIT LARRY LISTEN TO ME!" A frustrated Phoenix yelled into the mouth piece. Luckily, they were the only 2 in the building, so it was okay.
"...You could've asked politely…" Larry muttered.
"Look, I need to speak to an accused woman by the name of Blake."
"Nick, we're friends and all, but I can't-"
"Edgeworth, the high prosecutor, might I add, has requested to talk to her."
"...Okay, I'll patch you in. I hope you know this isn't a telephone line for se-"
"No Larry. I know this isn't a Sex Line."
"...Mr. Wright?" Phoenix's eyes shot open. You have got to be kidding me…
"Blake, look, I was talking to Larry, and-" Phoenix tried to explain everything, panicking, as he hoped his image in her mind wasn't of a spikey-haired perv.
"It's okay; I understand." Blake responded through the telephone.
"Hey, how was Apollo and Athena today?"
"You know I'd rather have you…" Before Phoenix could answer, Blake finished her thought, "But, then again, I also want you to work on the case I gave you. I can deal with those 2."
"A little faith can move mountains, Blake."
"I don't know if it will get me a not guilty though…"
"It will. Trust me."
"...okay." Blake responded with more confidence.
"Oh, by the way, I need to ask a few questions about the case."
"Okay, which one?"
"The case you gave me."
"Okay, I'll try my best." Blake confirmed.
"Okay; first: What do you know about a Project 57?"
"Project 57? Ohh… yeah… Project 57 was a base that sheltered testing. They tested everything from drug enhancing steroids for faunus, how to make faunus impervious to viruses, and other weapons."
"So, Ivan was trying to start a chemical war with humans…"
"Yeah. Project 57 stopped when Ivan died. Or at least…"
"Or at least…?"
"...It's nothing. There was a point in which testing started back up, but that was quickly shut down."
"Okay, now, one final question: Do you know a White Fang member by the name of Adam?"
Blake gasped into her mouthpiece. "Adam!? What did he do?"
"So I assume you know him? He visited my friend earlier. He tried to convince him to prosecute against you…"
"Oh… he is- well… used to be my partner. We worked for the White Fang. We took over trains, robbed banks, and…"
"It's okay Blake. I just need to know 1 thing about him: did he have access to the Project 57 base."
"...Mr. Wright… I need some time. I just need to settle my thoughts." Blake started to drift away from the phone.
"Blake, please! This is important to your case! Stay with me!"
"Mr. Wright… I'm so-" and all he heard after that was beeping.
"Damnit!" Phoenix cursed aloud. Phoenix banged the back of his head to the wall. I guess I have to make due with what I got… c'mon Apollo and Athena, buy us some time!
