"Hinkley, won't you be joining me?" His sometimes-rival lecturer looked down his nose at the Professor. "I'm sailing for the resort on the Queen Liliuokalani tomorrow."

He thought it over. In one respect, it would be an excellent opportunity to compare notes on the local flora. But… "Thank you, but no. There are some matters I must attend to at the resort today, hence my leaving today."

In truth, he had no reason to leave now, but something told him to take an earlier boat. –At least I'll get some extra research done without Nosy here looking over my shoulder!–
