"Your intellect may be confused, but your emotions will never lie to you."
-Roger Ebert
Sheldon's voice came out as a whisper, but since everyone was so close to him, they were able to hear him clearly.
"There are four people in my room. No one is supposed to be in my room."
They all started to look at each other as the realized what has now happened to him, and all Penny could do was excuse herself out of Sheldon's bedroom.
"Penny?" Howard emerged from the hallway leading to Sheldon and Leonard's bedroom. Penny was sitting on the arm chair with her face buried in her hands. The sound of his voice made her jump slightly since her back was towards him, and she didn't expect anyone to come out looking for her. Howard walked over to the leather couch and sat on the cushion closest to Penny. "Is everything okay?"
She couldn't think straight. It was bothering her so much that she doesn't know what exactly happened to Sheldon. She had some hope that he was still the same, but it seemed to diminish every passing second. Raj had told her about some of Sheldon's quirks before the accidents, and one of them was how he had no tolerance with people being in his bedroom. The moment Sheldon said those words, she had a clue of what was going on. "Yeah," Penny finally answered after awhile, "but how's Sheldon?"
Howard ran his hand through his hair and shrugged. "Leonard and Raj are in there with him right now. He's still a little upset that there are people in his room other than him. They're trying to see if everything came back to him. Sheldon's also fine, but before I left the room he was complaining about his head so I promised to fetch him some aspirin."
"That's great," Penny mumbled. Her heart sunk a bit when she thought about Sheldon remembering everything. She hoped that he was still the same man she knew. "Aren't you getting his aspirin?"
"I am. I just wanted to make sure you were alright. You seemed a little shaken up when he woke up," Howard replied.
Penny gave him a small smile. "Thank you."
They both turned their heads simultaneously as the sound of footsteps made its way into the living room. Sheldon entered the room with Leonard and Raj behind just in case he fell back. Prior to getting out of bed, Sheldon decline their help with assisting him outside. He reasoned that it would be easier for him to catch their germs during skin-to-skin contact.
She met Sheldon's eyes but didn't say a word yet. Sheldon stood in front of the glass coffee table and pointed at Howard. "You're in my spot."
Howard shared a look with Penny before sliding down one seat to his right as Sheldon moved to sit on his spot. Penny sat quietly, observing the seemingly-odd Sheldon. Sheldon sighed as he placed his hands on his lap. "I would very much like my hot chocolate right now."
Raj scrambled into the kitchen in order to prepare Sheldon's beverage. Sheldon noted that he needed a hot beverage since he was upset about so many people being in his room and compared it to a discotheque. It was silent, the only sound was the water boiling in the kettle and Raj tearing open the powdered package.
It was getting too awkward, so Penny faced Sheldon. "How's your head?"
"I may have suffered a concussion but the pain has now changed from insufferable to uncomfortable. Howard, my aspirin?" Sheldon raised his brow and Howard left to get his medicine.
Something seemed off to Penny. The way he talked felt very different. Almost close to unfamiliar. She pushed such thought away from her mind and continued her conversation with Sheldon. "Is your brain... normal?"
Sheldon paused. "Well, I did have a short-lived fear of a slight damage that occurred in my brain during the assault. I later found out that everything is intact and well."
Penny was curious of how he acted in front of her. He remembered her, so that meant that he didn't lose memories. Raj handed him his cup of hot chocolate and then sat next to Sheldon. Howard returned from the bathroom with the aspirin neatly tucked into a napkin while Leonard listened to their conversation. Taking a deep breath, she asked the question that had been bothering her. "What about your memories?"
He finished his first sip before placing his cup on top of the table. "What about them?"
"Are they all in there or you still have some holes?"
Another dreaded pause passed. The other four people were on the edge of their seats, waiting for Sheldon's response.
"Yes," he simply said.
They looked to one another after his vague answer. "Yes, you remember everything or yes, I still don't know some?" Leonard asked for clarification.
"Yes, I remember everything," Sheldon answered.
A small gasp was emitted from them. Penny was confused as hell. Why is he acting like it isn't a big deal?
"So...?" Howard spoke.
Sheldon shrugged. "Are you all still confused about something?"
"Huh, wow," Leonard said. "So you get all your memories back and boom, no impact?"
"Apparently, that's the case," Sheldon responded. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I am in dire need of a full-cycled REM sleep tonight. Leonard, we leave work tomorrow at eight so I suggest you hurry in the shower. I will now retire. Goodnight Penny, Howard, Raj, and Leonard. If you plan on staying any longer, may I please request that you all keep your voices down to a minimum? Thank you."
Watching Sheldon head back to his bedroom, Penny could not bring herself to say a word. She was shocked about the turn of events and needed to talk to him. She stood up and began to walk down the hallway when Leonard called out her name.
"Yes?"
"Penny, I know you want to ask him a bunch of questions but if he really is his old self again, it's probably best to wait until tomorrow," Leonard replied.
She fought the urge to ignore his comment and invite herself into his room, but she was playing with the current unknown and unfamiliar. Sighing, she picked up her purse from Sheldon's desk where she left it before carrying him to his bed. "I'm going to head out as well. I have a something tomorrow and I need a lot of sleep. Call me if anything happens."
After a quiet exchange of goodbyes, Penny left apartment 4A in a hurry. She dashed down the stairs and outside to her parked car, wanting to get home as soon as possible. Sitting stationary in the driver's seat, Penny was bewildered by everything. It happened all of a sudden and without warning. She had no clue, not even knowing the slight possibility that Sheldon would be reverting back to his old self with all the memories he lost and gained in the near future.
He acted a bit distant from her when he woke up and it worried her deeply. The day she decided to commit herself to Sheldon was also the day when things changed. She was not so much clear about what kind of changes they were, but she knew that it would affect her relationship with Sheldon along with his relationship with his friends. What happens now that he knows about how much his "friends" betrayed him? What if he kicks her out of the group because she wasn't a genius or a huge fan of science fiction?
Sheldon wouldn't do that, she told herself. The goodness in him was still there. She was sure that it would be. He wasn't the kind of person that would let someone into his life and cut the cord out of the blue. He had an impact in her, and she had one to him. They couldn't just let go. Can they?
Her phone buzzed and she fished it out of her purse to read the recently sent text message. She was relieved for it to be Sheldon, so she immediately unlocked her phone and read his text.
May I request your presence tomorrow during my lunch break in my office?
She chuckled because of how formal the way he asked her to meet up during his lunch break. With no hesitation, she typed out and sent her "yes" before putting her phone back. Igniting her engine and pulling into traffic, she hoped that Sheldon would explain his behavior. It was odd to her. To everyone else, really. As she drove down the street, she slammed on her breaks when a car ran a red light, almost hitting her.
"Asshole," she muttered as her eyes settled on the plastic bag that had fallen off the back seat. She resumed driving and later parked in front of her apartment building. Reaching out behind her seat, she picked up the bag on the floor of her car. She shook her head when she realized that she had never given Sheldon his birthday present. Penny planned on giving it to him once she dropped him off to his apartment but seemed to forgotten it after Sheldon's incident.
Penny silently reminded herself to give the gift tomorrow before exiting out of her car.
"I'll be done in about fifteen minutes, you can go and drive around if you'd like," Amy said, leaning her head down to the window of the car parked next to the sidewalk.
"Just call me once you're done," Bert responded before giving Amy a quick kiss and driving off.
Amy felt like she was in heaven. Her relationship with Bert had been relaxing and easy for her during the past several weeks. Bert was kind and sweet. He had an odd sense of humor that she seemed to enjoy. He always smothered her with his bear hugs and his lips tasted like lemonade, due to his fondness for the drink. She was finally happy in her life, but deep down, she knew he wasn't the man who was supposed to make her feel that way.
From time to time, Amy found herself thinking about Sheldon.
And his face.
And his eyes.
And his lips.
And his quirks.
As much as she denied it, she missed her theoretical physicist who had a fondness for trains and monkeys. She still loved her big weirdo from the moment she set her eyes on him to present day. She missed their late night intellectual talks and occasional visits to the zoo. She missed their regularly scheduled tea time and date nights.
Although Bert could provide her what Sheldon couldn't, Amy would still pick Sheldon over Bert. He was her first boyfriend and firsts always meant something to her. Except for her first kiss, the one with the guy who just wanted his insulin back. Sheldon may not be the best boyfriend out there, but to her, he was special. She could still remember the kisses they shared, especially the one that he initiated first.
Snap out of it. You're Bert's now, not Sheldon's, Amy reminded herself as she entered the local market. She picked up a basket and began to walk up and down the aisles, picking up a can of beans and a bottle of lemonade. She went over to the pharmacy in the market and waited for Bert's prescription that he needed. It was allergy season, and Amy was already getting tired of Bert's constant sneezing in between kisses.
Leaving the counter, her eyes caught Leonard's who was standing in line behind her. Amy hadn't talked to the group for awhile, and honestly, she didn't miss it. She wasn't close to any of them other than Sheldon. His friends were just people in her life that she knew because of a mutual friendship. Yet, it didn't stop her from calling his name.
"Hey, Amy. Haven't seen you for a long time. How are things?" Leonard asked with a grin.
"Things are going okay I guess," Amy answered. She regretted saying the next few words however. "How's Sheldon?"
"Well, good news. He finally remembers everything. He got punched in the head last night and his memories came back. I'm here to pick up some medicine for his headache. He's in the car waiting right now. Do you want to talk to him?"
Amy fought the urge to nod. "No, thank you. I prefer not to see my ex-boyfriend."
"Ex? Oh," Leonard said. "Yeah, I forgot about that."
She needed to be out of the conversation as soon as possible, so she made up some ridiculous excuse to leave which Leonard bought. As she waited at the corner of the street for Bert, she couldn't believe that Sheldon regained his memories. She was happy. Excited, really. He remembers their kisses, their date nights, and their talks. Everything, and she couldn't be any more happier.
Before she could think about getting back with Sheldon, she remembered about her relationship with Bert. She was happy with him, but not as happy as she will be once she's back with Sheldon.
Upon impulse, she decided to break things off with Bert. Sheldon was finally there for her and ready to resume the relationship. She'll miss physical contact, however, but she knew that somehow, she could push Sheldon into giving her more. The car parked beside her and she climbed inside. She did regret having to do this. Bert was a nice guy. He deserved someone in his life, but Amy deduced that the woman wasn't her. She was meant to be with Sheldon.
She planned on breaking up with Bert in the afternoon and talking to Sheldon tonight. She loved him so much that she was willing to resume what slow-moving relationship they have. If things go well, she could even make him start kissing her during date nights, and eventually, spontaneously. Yeah, that was her dream. That, and being Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler-Cooper.
Amy could already feel his lips on hers as Bert drove themselves to her apartment.
A/N:
Uh-oh. Shenny encounters a problem.
If I make Amy seem like a bitch, I apologize. She's not that experienced in relationships since she's only been in one before. Also, I'd like to say hello to the new readers! Welcome aboard to our story! Expect the following chapter in a couple of days and after that, it might take me a week or two since I'm going on vacation.
Up next: Penny and Sheldon talk one-on-one.
