Jac had been dangerously silent the whole of the car journey to the hospital. Sacha had also said very little except to express his disappointment that Jasmine had tricked him into thinking the trip had the permission of her consultants. In the end Jasmine had broken the edgy silence by muttering 'I am sorry, if I've gotten you into any trouble.'
'You have no idea have you Jasmine?' Jac spoke from the back seat of Sacha's car. 'You effectively made Sacha abduct a patient. The fact he did it unwittingly does give cause for other concerns regarding his intellectual integrity.'
'Don't you dare take your anger out on me' Sacha snapped from the drivers seat as he drove into the hospital entrance. 'She was dressed and ready to go when I got to the hospital to pick her up.'
'You didn't think to inform, oh I don't know, a medical professional before you took her off the ward?' Jac snapped back.
'Obviously not' Sacha retorted 'because unlike you I actually trust people.'
'Well isn't this just the perfect advertisement for the truth and honesty of the human race?' Jac spoke sarcastically. Jasmine was starting wish they had continued with the frosty silence. 'Medical staff have spent an entire afternoon searching for my sister when they should have been treating patients who needed their time and attention' Jac continued in a rant as Sacha parked the car.
They exited the vehicle and began a slow walk up to the hospital entrance. Even the sight of her sister struggling to walk with soreness of her stitches did little to mellow Jac's furry.
'Uh oh we've got a welcoming committee' Sacha muttered to Jac. Michael Spence, Ric Griffin and Henrik Hanssen stood waiting in the building entrance. None of them looked particularly amused. 'What do you think we should say to them?'
'I suggest you, my huge lump of an imbecile, should say nothing' Jac muttered back. 'I think Ric is still upset with you over your wedding cake faux pas so I definitely wouldn't address him regarding this particular incident.'
'You know that slip of the tongue could have happened to anyone' Sacha muttered back crossly.
'But it didn't. It happened to you. Much like the current situation we find ourselves in' Jac was clearly more cross than Sacha had realised over the whole wedding cake debacle.
'Hi Mr Hanssen, how are you?' Jasmine suddenly called out without a hint of remorse in her voice as they neared the entrance.
'Well let's see what they make of that' Sacha muttered to a now rendered speechless Jac.
'I'm very well thank you Miss Burrows. Perhaps if you would like to take a seat in this wheelchair I can escort you back up to Keller?' Jasmine obediently sat herself down in the proffered chair. 'I trust you have had an enjoyable afternoon?' Henrik asked the young woman as he pushed her into the hospital.
'Boy, you look as angry as Ric feels' Michael spoke to Jac as they watched Henrik Hanssen push Jasmine to the lifts. 'Lets take the stairs, give you a chance to cool off.'
'Unbelievable' Jac muttered still staring at her employer and sister chatting companionably as they waited for the lift.
'Come on Jac' Ric gently placed a hand on Jac's elbow to guide her towards the stairs. 'Obviously you deserve an explanation as much as we do' he glared at Sacha.
'Actually I think I'd rather get the lift' Sacha spoke annoyed by the amount of blame he was being portioned with. 'And it's going to take more than a walk up the stairs to calm her down.' He nodded towards Jac 'she called me an imbecile.'
'Alright let's not get childish' Michael struggled to keep a straight face. Apparently he was the only one finding humour in this situation. 'You take the lift Sacha, we'll take the stairs and meet you in the office'.
'Imbecile is a pretty accurate assessment' Ric muttered darkly under his breath as they started their ascent up the stairs.
Jac had resumed her stony silence as Sacha defended his actions to Michael and Ric.
'I don't really see why I'm being portioned with all the blame here' Sacha finished up. 'Besides it took you lot over an hour to realise Jasmine was missing in the first place.'
'we thought she'd gone for her scan' Michael was still trying not to laugh. Initially he hadn't found the situation funny but since Jasmine had been found happy and well his sense of humour had taken over.
'Apart from the fact you didn't inform anyone before you took her off the ward we're not blaming you' Ric sighed 'Jasmine is clearly as cunning as her sister' Jac glared at Ric 'however she is also very young.'
'She's twenty one' Jac broke her silence at last.
'She's still a young adult Jac' Ric leaned back in his chair 'She may appear older than her years but she is still only just out of her teens.'
Henrik Hanssen entered the office and quietly closed the door behind him. 'It would seem no harm was done by Miss Burrow's actions today. I have however sent her up for her scan escorted by Nurse Lane to ensure we have no more mishaps. I trust we have all learnt valuable lessons today. I myself have learnt it is important to listen to terminally ill patients when they say they are fed up of hospital life.' Henrik smiled kindly. 'It would seem her little trip out has lifted Jasmines sprits quite considerably. I think we should discuss discharging her within the next day or so.'
'Is that it?' Jac spoke up. 'No lectures about wasting valuable NHS resources looking for my sister? And never mind the fact she wasted a scan slot that could have been used by an emergency?'
'I can see you are cross you have been lied to Ms Naylor. I confess that I had ignored her request earlier today that she should be allowed some time off the ward. I think we have all forgotten what it is to be young. I think your sister perhaps deserves a little excitement.'
'Today was fun, admit it Jac.' Sacha suddenly grinned now it was clear all was to be forgiven and forgotten.
Jac sat in chair in Jasmine's side room whilst she waited for her sister to return from her scan.
'oh dear you still look cross.' Jasmine said as she was wheeled back into the room by a porter.
'Perhaps you could try a bit of contrition' Jac spoke as she helped her sister back into bed as the porter removed the now unneeded wheelchair from the room. 'It might help to improve my mood.'
'I could but then I wouldn't mean it. I am glad I didn't get Sacha into trouble though.'
Jac gave Jasmine a furious glare.
'Look I had fun this afternoon. I'm not going to apologise for that' Jasmine was starting to feel cross now too. 'Even Mr Hanssen, who has every right to be cross with me, can see it did me good to get out of the hospital and pretend like everything was normal. I was just a normal sister helping her big sister to find the perfect dress for her wedding.'
'But we're not normal' Jac crossed her arms across her chest. 'Do you have any idea what damage you could have done to yourself?'
'I'm a dying woman. What could I possibly do to myself that would be worse than that?' Jasmines voice was rising in volume as her annoyance with her sister increased. 'I enjoyed seeing you today being mothered by someone who was kind and thoughtful. If you weren't so obsessed with being a stick in the mud you'd admit you enjoyed it too.'
'I'm going to come back tomorrow. Maybe by then you'll have grown up a bit and stopped shouting.' Jac spoke calmly as she turned to exit the room.
'THAT'S RIGHT YOU GO HOME AND PLAY HAPPY FAMILIES WITH MY DAUGHTER WHILE I'M STUCK IN HERE' Jasmine roared her bad temper suddenly getting the better of her. Jac whipped back around to confront her sister, a look of shock very much evident on her face. 'IF YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR OWN CHILDREN YOU MIGHT AS WELL STEAL MINE TO MOTHER.'
'Now that's enough!' Ric stepped into the room as Jasmine suddenly started a fit of coughing brought on by her yelling. 'Don't you think you've caused enough trouble for one day?' Ric spoke sternly to Jasmine as he handed her an oxygen mask and turned the valve to its supply on.
'Jac, come on, come with me' Sacha spoke softly to Jac as he the gently placed his hands on her shoulders and guided her out of the room and into the staffroom.
'She didn't mean what she just said, I know she didn't' Sacha spoke as he guided Jac into a chair.
'Then why did she say it? It's obviously been on her mind for a while'. Jac was still taken aback at Jasmines anger. 'Do you think the whole ward heard it?'
'Possibly but I'm sure everyone will be discreet.'
'Who are you trying to kid Sacha? We both know it'll be all round the hospital by tomorrow morning that Jac Naylor is as barren as her heart and is, apparently, stealing away her sister's daughter.'
'Jac no one is going to think that' Sacha tried to reassure his friend
'I'm really confused' Jac admitted to her best friend. 'She comes here looking for me to ask me to take in her daughter because she's terminally ill and then when it's all agreed and settled she takes an apparent dislike to her own plan.'
'I don't think she's changed her mind'. Sacha became silent as he thought about how Jasmine might be feeling.
'The thing is she is right.' Jac suddenly broke into the silence 'I love Ava as if she were my own, but she's not mine is she? I don't really have the right to feel that way.'
'Do you want to know what I think?' Sacha took hold of Jac's hand. 'I think lucky Ava. She has a mother, an aunt and an uncle all of whom love her unconditionally. We both know that some children don't even have one person to love them like that.' He smiled sadly a Jac. 'You have every right to feel strong overpowering maternal love for Ava. She needs it and Jasmine knows it.'
'Then why did she…?'
'I don't know. It's got to be really strange watching your child being cared for by someone else whilst you're stuck in hospital for long periods. And then when she is at home she still can't do everything for Ava so again she's watching you and Jonny bonding with her daughter whilst she feels increasingly redundant' Sacha smiled at Jac 'Jasmine is not a saint. She's bound to feel jealousy, anger and frustration. To be honest I'm amazed she can find any joy and merriment in life at all and yet she does. But today she obviously needed to lash out at someone and you know what they say, its easiest to hurt those closest to you.'
'So what do I do?' Jac asked, feeling increasingly exhausted by the complexity of this situation.
'Forgive and forget her outbursts, talk and listen to her, continue to love her and Ava' Sacha shrugged 'pretty much what you have been doing.'
'Jac, Jasmine would like to see you' Ric spoke as he popped his head around the door. 'She said to say she'd understand if you rather not right now but she's sorry for what she said and she didn't mean it'. He stepped into the room and closed the door. 'Between us I think she is rather ashamed of herself. She said she is glad you love Ava and Ava loves you. That it is more than she could of hoped for. She's also sorry that she has ruined what should have been a magical day for you.'
'Her head must be all over the place' Jac sighed as she stood up. 'You know what? I'm starting to think this wedding is the only thing, bar Ava, that is keeping her going' she spoke as she walked past Ric out of the door. Ric watched her walk back into Jasmines room and then he closed the door.
'I've given Jasmine a bit of stern talking too along the lines of not biting the hand that feeds you. Hopefully she'll try talking to Jac next time rather than these dramatic out bursts.' Ric sat himself down in a chair. 'Did you actually get Jac Naylor into a wedding dress?' he grinned.
'Wait until you see it' Sacha grinned back 'she looked magnificent.'
'I really am sorry Jac' Jasmine wiped away her tears of shame as she apologised for the umpteenth time to her sister. 'I really didn't mean what I said.'
'I know' Jac sat down on the bed next to her sister and pulled her into a hug. 'I'd rather you hadn't broadcasted it to entire ward but what's done is done'
'I promise the next time I start getting irrationally jealous and angry I will talk to you about it.' Jasmine sniffed.
'I'll believe that when I see it' Jac laughed 'don't forget you and I are from the same ilk.'
'Do you think Ava's run poor Mo ragged yet?' Jasmine smiled at sister.
'Probably but I've not had any phone calls begging us to recuse her so I think I'll wait here until Jonny finishes his shift.' Jac smiled back at Jasmine. 'I'm going to see if I can get you discharged tomorrow morning. I reckon they will be only too pleased to let me take you off their hands.'
