As Jonny walked to Albies he could hardly believe that this time tomorrow night he would be a married man. He smiled to himself as he remembered Jac's goodbye to him as she left for home an hour ago. A lingering kiss, a few nagging remarks about not becoming intoxicated, and then her soft whisper of 'I love you'.
'Evening Jonny' Sacha's jolly demeanour greeted him just outside the entrance to the bar.
'Sacha!' Jonny exclaimed surprised to see him here 'I thought you were spending the evening with Jac?'
'Oh I am' Sacha answered him 'I've just got something important I need to do first.'
'What's that?' Jonny smiled
'Jonny, I like you, I respect you but…' Sacha's demeanour suddenly changed into being almost bear like as he picked Jonny up by his jacket and held him against the wall of the pub '…if you ever harm Jac Naylor, cause her upset or distress by thoughtless actions there will be consequences' he growled 'am I making myself clear?'
'P..P..Perfectly' Jonny stuttered completely shocked by Sacha's dramatic change in personality.
'I can trust you?' Sacha growled.
'Absolutely' Jonny gulped.
'Right then' Sacha suddenly smiled again as he set Jonny on his feet and straightened his jacket for him. 'I think we understand each other. Have a good evening Jonny.' He patted Jonny gently on the shoulder 'look after Mo for me won't you?'
Jonny nodded his head nervously as Sacha walked away. Ric Griffin walked past Jonny to enter the bar.
'Are you coming in for your last drink as a single man?' Ric spoke pleasantly.
'Did you just see what happened with Sacha?' Jonny spoke still in shock.
'Yes I did' Ric spoke matter of factually. 'Let me assure you there is no shortage of people willing to defend Jac should you behave dishonourably towards her' he added in a dark undertone 'the majority of which are skilful with a scalpel, if you catch my drift.'
'I can assure you there will be no need' Jonny spoke quickly.
'So we're trusting you to keep your promises and you can trust us to keep ours' Ric smiled broadly 'come on' he held open the door for Jonny 'you look like you could do with a stiff drink.'
'As Jac would say; bloody hell' Jonny muttered under his breath as he followed Ric into the bar.
Sacha arrived at Jac's flat to find the two sisters having a quiet argument so as not to wake Ava.
'How can you be sure the cough is just a cough if you won't let a doctor look at you' Jac hissed at Jasmine out of sheer exasperation.
'As I keep reminding you, you are my sister not my doctor.' Jasmine glared at Jac from her hunched up position on the sofa.
'Fine then' Jac flung her arm holding her stethoscope at Sacha 'let Sacha listen to your chest and then we'll both be happy.'
'No!' Jasmine spoke firmly again 'like you've already agreed it's probably just the cold Ava had a few days ago or one of the tumours being irritating, so let it go no one is examining me!'
Sacha couldn't help it, he boomed with laughter.
'Shh!' both the sisters glared at him with the same irritable look which only made him laugh harder.
'I'm sorry' he gasped through his laughter 'it's just you're so alike.' He managed to recover himself before his loud mirth woke Ava. 'Right this is what we'll do' he spoke sensibly now to Jac 'I'm not going to examine Jasmine against her will and you and I both know you won't be satisfied with a mere general surgeon diagnosing a thoracic complaint. So Jasmine do you promise that if your symptoms get any worse you will tell us and let us help you?'
Jasmine nodded her head as Jac continued to scowl.
'Well that is good enough for me' Sacha beamed. 'Now hurry up and order the chinese because I'm starving.'
The light buzzing noise of her phone vibrating next to her on the coffee table was enough to wake Jac. She snatched it up and looked across at Sacha who was still sleeping soundly. After an evening filled with too many cheesy movies Jasmine had gone to bed with her head filled with romantic wedding scenes. Jac had stayed up talking to Sacha until past midnight when they had both fallen asleep companionably sharing the sofa bed. Jac quickly got up as silently as she could and answered the phone in the kitchen, sliding the dividing door across behind her.
'This had better not be a drunk dial Maconie' Jac answered.
'No its not' she heard Jonny laugh 'I've only had a couple I swear.'
'Then you'll realise its two thirty in the morning' Jac yawned.
'I know but Mo confiscated my phone saying it was bad luck for the groom to speak to bride on the morning before the wedding.'
'I thought that was if you see the bride'
'I thought that too but then what the hell do I know about weddings? I'm just going with the flow. Anyhow the thing is I wanted to talk to you but I had to wait until Mo fell asleep so I could pinch my phone back.'
'As romantic as this is all sounding, could you get to the point so I can go back to sleep?'
Jonny smiled at the sound of Jac's sleepy voice. 'Ok I'll try to keep this brief then. I just wanted to say I love you and without you my life would be incomplete. You have given me so much there are no words to accurately describe it. With you I feel loved and supported and valued and I don't know why or how, and to be honest I don't care, but for whatever reason we work and I can see us lasting together until the end of our days. We'll be like those wrinkly old couples you see in the local paper celebrating sixty years of marriage. I've wanted to tell you for a long time that I think Amelia, our precious baby girl, was given to us to bring us together. We are Amelia's legacy.' Jonny could only hear silence coming down his phone. 'Jac? Are you still there?' he asked uncertainly.
'Yes' Jac answered in a strained whisper, trying hard not to cry 'I'm still here'
'Thank god for that' Jonny sounded relieved. 'I thought I was waffling on, divulging my heart to a failed connection just then'
Jac couldn't help but laugh.
'I'm glad you're laughing and not crying' Jonny smiled as he heard her giggle. 'I think you are the most beautiful woman who ever graced planet earth, even that time you had gastric flu you still outshone every other woman out there.'
'Now I know you're lying' Jac laughed shakily down the phone again still trying hard not to dissolve into tears.
'No its true' Jonny smiled. 'Your intelligence is another reason why I fell in love with you. Never before have I been insulted and had look up the words in the thesaurus to completely understand why I should be feeling so affronted. I'm proud of you Jac. I will continue to support you in your career and be full of pride at your achievements even if you want to pretend they are nothing. I'd climb mountains for you bare foot because I know I have all of your love and support and even if you don't say it I know I am cherished by you. I just needed you to know that tomorrow when I say those vows I will mean every word just as much as I know you do. I cherish you Jac and will do so until the last breath leaves my body. That's all I wanted to say' Jonny hung up the phone as he could hear Jac quietly sobbing down the other end.
'I've done as you suggested and opened up my heart to Jac. She's sobbing somewhere in the flat. Can you let me know if she is ok?' Jonny nervously typed into a text message and sent it to Jasmine.
Jasmine woke up as she heard her phone beep with the incoming text. She read it and then made her way slowly through the flat. As she walked on tiptoe through the living room Sacha stirred from his deep slumber.
'Jasmine?' he mumbled sleepily 'What's going on?'
'I think Jac is in the kitchen crying' she whispered as she made her way to the dividing doors and opened them to reveal Jac sat at the table weeping openly.
'Jac what's wrong?' Sacha spoke as he leapt out of the bed and swiftly made his way over to his best friend.
'It was Jonny' Jac explained through her tears 'he just called me'
'What's he said?' Sacha kept his voice even as his mind ran through the many different ways Jonny Maconie could potentially hurt Jac.
'He said the most beautiful things' Jac dissolved into fresh tears.
'Oh you silly billy.' Sacha's face relaxed as he crouched down and wrapped his arms around Jac. 'You could have said they were happy tears.'
'She's fine' Jasmine typed out a reply to Jonny 'she's sobbing happy tears and telling Sacha how much she wants to marry you.'
'Thank you' a relieved Jonny Maconie sent back to his future sister in-law. He smiled as he made his way back to bed. Today was sure to be a perfect day.
