Jac was woken again to the sound of her phone vibrating against the coffee table. She opened one eye to look at the screen on the phone. It was half seven and it was Elliot Hope calling.
'Hello' she answered it sleepily.
'Jac, I'm sorry to have to call you on today of all days but Mr Peterson is on his way in. He's had an RTA, I'm not sure what condition he or hertzig are in yet.'
'I'm on my way' Jac forced herself to sit up.
'Don't rush the roads are icy' Elliot warned her 'And take the…'
'The car and not the bike I know' Jac interrupted her old mentor with a huff. 'I'll see you soon Elliot'. She forced herself out of the bed and realised that Sacha was not beside her and Ava had not woken her like she normally did. She stumbled across the hall to Ava's bedroom to find it empty. She walked further down to Jasmine's room and found the three of them sat on Jasmines bed watching a DVD on the laptop.
'Happy wedding day!' Sacha cheered as she entered the room.
'Slight problem' Jac mumbled as she rubbed her eyes 'I've been called in, one of the Hertzig trial patients has been involved in an RTA.'
'Right' Sacha got off the bed quickly to start getting Jac organised 'get dressed and go in, Jasmine and I can sort everything and meet you at the hospital.'
'You'll remember to change the sheets on the sofa bed for Mo to stay here tonight?' Jac asked him as she walked to the bathroom. 'And to pick up Granddad from the station?'
Yes of course' Sacha shoved her into the bathroom 'I'm hardly likely to forget about George am I? He's my house guest for the whole of Christmas.'
Jac emerged dressed and more awake in less than ten minutes. Sacha handed her a black coffee and a banana. 'Eat, drink, go' he ordered her.
'Yes sir' Jac gave him a mock salute as she took a sip of the coffee. She put the cup down and peeled her banana and proceeded to eat it whilst she located various items she needed. 'Why is it I can never find the bloody stethoscope in a hurry?' she muttered to herself
'Maybe because you never keep it in the same place' Jasmine smiled as she held up the stethoscope she'd found in the fruit bowl, put there after Jac's stubborn sulk last night.
'Thanks' Jac smiled at her sister as she shoved it into her coat pocket. 'Right I'm off' she called to Sacha who was now in the kitchen making breakfast for everyone.
'Take the car, not…'
'The bike' Jac finished for him with a roll of her eyes. 'See you soon Pumpkin' she smiled at Ava as little girl gave her a hug.
In less than twenty minutes Jac was dressed in her usual blue scrubs and stood with Elliot looking at Mr Peterson's scans.
'Everything so far looks normal' Elliot sounded relieved 'and the Hertzig looks to be intact.'
'What was he doing driving a car in the first place when we've warned him not to?' Jac huffed. 'He's lucky there was no else involved.'
'Apparently he's an early riser always gets the morning paper and milk. He thought given the icy pavements it'd be safer for him to make a five minute journey in the car. That was until he hit black ice and crashed the car into a wall'
'Well he was fortunate to make it out virtually unscathed. I'll wait around until we get his bloods and ECG back to be sure everything is as it should be.' Jac yawned.
'Come on, we'd better let him off the hook and tell him the Hertzig has survived with him' Elliot chuckled.
As they walked up to Mr Petersons bed he began a renewed round of apologises for Jac's sake.
'Well let's just hope you've learnt a valuable lesson today' Jac looked sternly at her patient 'you've been lucky it would seem those scratches and bruises will be the only damage you've done to yourself.'
'Oh' the patient breathed a sigh of relief. 'Although I've still got to face the music with the missus. The car is a complete write off.'
'I suppose that will remove any temptation for you try it again' Jac mused.
'I'm sure Mrs Peterson will just be relieved you're ok and no one else was hurt.' Elliot smiled kindly
'Is that nurse ok then?' the man asked.
'What nurse?' Elliot asked confused
'The nurse who got me out the car. He cut up his arm badly on broken glass.' Mr Peterson breathed deeply. 'It was like divine intervention or something cos there he was there like a guardian angel getting me out of car and to think he was the cardio nurse who helped treat me when I was here last. Jonny I think his name is.'
Jac had run down the several flights of stairs to AAU with the sound of her racing pulse in her ears the entire way.
'Jonny. Is he here?' she panted at Ric Griffin as she reached the nurses station.
'He's here and he's fine Jac' Ric placed a comforting hand on her arm. 'He's been taken for an x-ray but it's just cuts and bruises.'
'…I really do have a renewed appreciation for life' Jac could hear Jonny's Scottish tones as he was pushed back onto ward by Mary Claire. Jac could see his arm was heavily bandaged .
'He's been talking like that since he arrived' Gemma Wilde informed Jac as she collected patient files from the desk.
'Jac!' Jonny exclaimed as he spotted his fiancée 'I thought I'd told you not to call her?' Jonny looked behind him at Mary Claire.
'Not to call me?!' Jac crossed her arms across her chest
'ooooh she looks cross' Mary Claire whispered to Jonny as she parked the wheelchair next to a bed and made a quick exit.
'I didn't want you to worry' Jonny spoke as he stood up out of the wheel chair. 'Especially not today.'
'Worry? I just had to find out from my Hertzig trial patient that you'd been injured but you didn't want me to worry?' Jac spoke crossly as she walked towards Jonny.
'I might have over looked the fact Elliot would have phoned his research partner regarding said Hertzig trial patient' Jonny gave Jac a guilty smile as he sat himself on the bed. 'Sorry'
'I thought I was your next of kin. I want to be worried about this sort of thing' Jac spoke softly. 'Hang on, why is there a soot mark on your face?' her voice took on a fiery tone once more.
'Oh well the car kind of exploded after I got Mr Peterson out of it.'
'The car kind of exploded?' Jac repeated weakly
'Yes' Jonny confirmed for her unsure what Jac reaction at this point was going to be.
'You bloody idiot!' Jac suddenly yelled 'why the hell would you risk your life like that?'
'Well that's like the pot calling the kettle black' Jonny shot back 'and how about a little bit of gratitude that I saved the life of one of your research patients?'
'Do you think we should intervene?' Gemma asked Serena, Ric and Mary Claire from their position at the nurses station.
'At your own risk' Ric laughed as he shook his head.
'Gratitude?' Jac yelled as she hit Jonny on the shoulder of his uninjured arm. 'Gratitude?' she hit him again.
'Ow! Bruises!' Jonny yelped
'Ok intervene, intervene' Serena spoke from her seat behind the desk. Mary Claire and Ric started to move quickly towards the arguing couple.
'So whilst my husband is lying dead in the morgue I'm meant to be grateful because at least my research trial would still be intact?' Jac angrily asked her voice cracking slightly
'I'm not your husband yet' Jonny responded huffily but then realised his mistake as he saw tears starting to roll down Jac's cheeks.
'What did you think I was going to do without you?' Jac sniffed not noticing the arrival of Ric and Mary Claire in her distress. 'And what about Ava? She needs you too.'
Mary Claire handed Jonny a box of tissues before herself and Ric backed away discreetly.
'Here' Jonny spoke softly as he held out the tissue box to Jac, who took one gratefully. 'I should have phoned you myself and told you everything was alright as soon as I got here, I realise that now. I wasn't thinking about anything else but getting the injured man out of the car at the time. I'm not going to apologise for that or promise I won't do it again because I know if it had been you in that situation you would have done exactly the same thing I did' he smiled lovingly at Jac. 'I am sorry I made you worry and to be perfectly honest I didn't realise how much danger I was actually in; the whole car exploding thing was a bit of a surprise. I could see the car was leaking fuel but I didn't actually think it would go up in flames, it was like something out of movie. '
'You idiot' Jac laughed softly as she dried her tears. 'What were you doing out at that time in the morning anyway?'
'I went for a run.' Jonny moved himself to edge of the bed and patted the space he had created.
'You went for a run on icy pavements?' Jac raised an eyebrow at him as she sat next to him on the bed.
'Yeah, I was using those shoe ice traction thingy's on my runners.' Jonny put his uninjured arm around Jac and winced slightly as she leaned against him, her body pressing against his bruised ribs. 'They work pretty well.' He smiled at Jac before whispering in her ear 'I woke up with excited butterflies in my tummy so I thought I'd go for run to calm them down.'
'Did it work?' she smiled back at him, her initial shock and anger now wearing off.
'Mission accomplished, although I'm not sure if it was the run or the whole near death experience thing.' He kissed Jac on the cheek.
'How bad is your arm?' Jac asked.
'They took glass out of it in the ED but Ric doesn't think it's too bad. I've had an x-ray to check for any more fragments of glass. I'm too much of a wuss to have had a good look at it myself.'
'Oh well at least you showed manly grit rescuing Mr Peterson.' Jac gently kissed Jonny's cheek. She laid her head on Jonny's shoulder as she whispered 'I love you'.
'I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch what you just said' Jonny grinned.
'You heard it' Jac continued to lie as she was as the couple lapsed into a companionable silence.
Ric coughed loudly to get the couples attention. 'Is it safe to come back now?' he joked. 'I've looked at the images and everything looks clear so I'm just going suture your arm and then you should be fit and ready to take your vows this afternoon.'
'Can I see?' Jac asked eagerly as she hopped down from the bed and moved around to Jonny's side as Ric started removing the dressings.
'You know you have a real morbid streak about you' Jonny spoke as he winced as Ric removed the final layer.
'Ouch!' Jac pulled a face as she saw the deep jagged wound about eight centimetres in length along Jonny's forearm. 'you were lucky not to hit any major blood vessels. Did you not think to clear away the broken glass before you tried rescuing the patient?'
'At the time I was too busy thinking 'hmm that's a lot of fuel leaking' and then 'flaming Nora its Jac's patient Mr Peterson' Jonny huffed.
'Right a little bit of stinging coming up' Ric informed Jonny as he inserted the needle containing local anaesthetic around the site of the wound.
Jac grabbed hold of Jonny's other hand as she saw him wince with the pain. 'You really are a wuss huh?' she joked softly as he squeezed her hand tight.
'Little bit of stinging?!' Jonny exclaimed to Ric.
'That's the worse bit over now' Ric spoke reassuringly but Jonny didn't miss the look of amusement the general surgeon shared with Jac.
'Do you mind not watching my suturing which such close attention Ms Naylor?' Ric grumbled good naturedly 'it's a little unnerving.'
'There's no need to feel threatened Ric, just because we both know my suturing is far neater than yours' Jac joshed 'I trust you not to make too much of a mess of Jonny's arm.'
'I know you two are just joking but you are doing little to put your patient at ease' Jonny crossly interrupted the banter between the pair. 'Jac do you think you could go and get me a cup of tea instead of irritating the man stitching me up?'
'Ok fine, there's no need to be a Mr grumpy pants just because you're in pain' Jac rolled her eyes at him as she walked away to get him his cup of tea.
'Will I be left with a scar?' Jonny asked Ric now Jac was out of ear shot.
'Most likely yes, but I'll try to make it as neat as I can.'
'Jonny how are you feeling?' a smiling Professor Hope asked the patient.
'A bit sore but I'll live' he smiled at his friend.
'I think you might want to call Mo'. Elliot held out his phone to Jonny so he could borrow it to make a call. 'I had frantic phone call telling me not to tell Jac but she'd lost you. I think she thought you'd absconded' he chuckled 'I let her know what's been happening'.
'You know, the amount of faith you lot have in me is just staggering' Jonny glared at a guilty looking Ric as he dialled Mo's number one handed. 'Hello Mo its Jonny' he spoke as she answered. He held the phone away from his ear as Mo proceed to yell choice words at him. After a minute Jonny decided to take control of the conversation 'look just calm down would you? I couldn't call earlier because my phone got smashed to pieces when I had to dive to the ground as the car exploded and I've been dealing with an angry and emotional Jac...well of course we've seen each other…I can't believe I've had a near death experience and your primary concern is that it would be bad luck for Jac and I to see each other before the wedding…of course I'm taking the wedding seriously…good idea you and Sacha get everything sorted and meet Jac and I here...Mo let me assure you I have never been more sure about anything in my entire life. I love Jac Naylor and I will marry her today come hell, high water or exploding cars.' Jonny hung up the phone and handed it back to Elliot.
'That's the most romantic thing I've ever heard' Mary Claire wiped away a tear as she turned on her heel to go inform Gemma and Serena of what she'd just over heard.
'You know I don't know why life can't just be simple' Jonny mused as he looked at his newly sutured wound before Ric dressed it. 'Sometimes it feels like God gets a tiny bit bored so He has to create a bit of drama.'
'Maybe it's meant to test us, to show us what we really want' Ric answered him as he bandaged Jonny's arm.
'Well whatever His reasons for this morning were I'd prefer it if I could just get hitched without any more hiccups.' Jonny looked up at the ceiling 'You hear me God? Any more trials and tribulations today I might just go off you.'
