Thank you for all the positive reviews! They've inspired me to write a couple of chapters so I'm able to update sooner than I expected. Hope you enjoy reading this. Please don't be shy; leave a review to let me know what you think! :-)
As they waited outside the chapel doors for Reverend Timmins Yuliana fussed with the girls dresses and straightened up Sacha's tie. 'Now I will down at the front waiting for Ava to finish putting down her petals and Jasmine's wheelchair will be with me also' she smiled at the party. 'My darling I will not wish you luck because you do not need it, so accept my happiness that you are marrying your true love' she spoke to Jac as she opened the chapel doors. She looked inside the room and then turned back to the waiting party. 'You have a full house my darlings' she grinned as she entered the room.
'Okay, now I'm nervous' Jac took a deep breath.
'It's a little bit of stage fright that is all' Granddad George spoke reassuringly 'you just have to think all you have to do is repeat what the vicar tells you to and then the job is done.'
'Perhaps the way to look it is to pretend it is just you and Jonny in that room' Jasmine spoke quietly 'forget about everyone else being there and concentrate on Jonny.'
The door opened and Reverend Alice poked her head out. 'Are we ready? She smiled.
'Yes' Jac nodded her head and tried to ignore the butterflies floating around her stomach.
'Remember you are among friends Jac' Alice laughed. 'Right wait for the music to start and then cue Ava' she propped the doors open before she retreated down the short aisle to the alter . Jac could see Yuliana wasn't lying; the room was packed. Whether they were indeed here as friends or just turned up out of curiosity Jac couldn't tell. Instead she focused her attention on Jonny who was stood waiting, his back turned to the door.
Alice nodded her head to the guitarist who had been hired without Jac's knowledge. The young man started to play a version of the song 'Marry Me' by Train. 'A little surprise for you from Jonny' Sacha whispered in Jac's ear as Jasmine got Ava started on walking down aisle scattering rose petals, a skill she had practised and perfected walking up and down Jac and Jonny's hallway. A collective 'aww' was heard from the congregation. Jasmine slipped her arm into Sacha's and they too started their slow journey, the man of honour escorting the bridesmaid safety down the aisle.
'It's our turn now Jac' Granddad smiled as he gently took her arm in his. Jac smiled back at him as they took their first step into the room. At that moment Jonny turned around and smiled at Jac the most loving smile she had ever seen him give her. Jac couldn't help but smile back as she walked to meet him.
'There's something different about you' Jonny joked as she stood next to him waiting for the singer to finish 'did you buy a new dress?'
'Ha ha' Jac replied dryly. 'Thanks for the singer by the way' she smiled at him.
'Oh well I couldn't just let my beautiful bride walk down the aisle to any old song being played on a tinny sounding cd player now could I?' he smiled back as the musician finished his piece.
'Dearly beloved we are gathered here today to witness the joyous union of this couple in marriage' Reverend Alice beamed to the room before she began a prayer. 'God, for the joy of this occasion we thank you. For the significance of this wedding day we thank you. For this important moment in an ever growing relationship we thank you. For your presence here and now and for your presence at all times, we thank you. In Christ's holy name. Amen.'
'Please be seated' Alice smiled to the congregation. 'Marriage is a most honourable estate, created and instituted by God, signifying unto us the mystical union, which also rests between Christ and the Church; so too may this marriage be adorned by true and abiding love. Should there be anyone who has cause why this couple should not be united in marriage, they must speak now or forever hold their peace.'
The door to the chapel creaked open. Jac and Jonny exchanged nervous glances. As one the occupants of the room turned to see who had entered the room.
'Apologies' Mr Hanssen spoke as he took the seat Serena had been saving for him 'I was delayed by a patient. Please continue.'
Jac tried hard to remain sensible and not let the amused grinned threatening to form on her lips develop. Her efforts were wasted however when she heard Jonny snigger forcing her to let out her own laugh. The rest of the congregation joined in, with Reverend Timmins laughing loudest.
Alice managed to regain control of herself fairly quickly and waited for the laughter in the room to die down before asking 'Who gives this woman to be married to this man?'
'I most certainly do' Granddad George beamed as has passed Jac's hand into Jonny's causing the congregation to titter once more.
'Jonathan, do you take Jacqueline for your lawful wedded wife, to live in the holy estate of matrimony?' Alice spoke to the groom 'Will you love, honour, comfort, and cherish her from this day forward, forsaking all others, keeping only unto her for as long as you both shall live?'
'I will' Jonny replied with a smile to Jac.
'Jacqueline' Alice now addressed the bride 'do you take Jonathan for your lawful wedded husband, to live in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love, honour, comfort, and cherish him from this day forward, forsaking all others, keeping only unto him for as long as you both shall live?'
'I will' Jac smiled lovingly at Jonny as she mused to herself how right Jasmine had been. All she had to do was concentrate on Jonny and it was easy.
'I believe Jac's sister Jasmine has a reading she would like to share with us' Reverend Alice smiled kindly at Jasmine as she got slowly to her feet and made her way to the front of the room.
'Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to great places! You're off and away!' Jasmine began to read enthusiastically.
'Dr. Seuss'? Jonny raised his eye brow at Jac.
'What can I say?' she shrugged as she whispered 'Jasmine and Ava's passion for children's literature is beginning to rub off on me'
As Jasmine continued reading Dr Seuss's classic Oh, the places you'll go! Jonny smiled lovingly at Jac. She looked as beautiful as ever but at this moment he found he couldn't take his eyes off her. Jac smiled back at him showing him the love he felt from her every day.
'Now for the serious bit' Alice whispered to the couple with a grin as Jasmine walked back to her seat. 'Jonathan repeat after me…' Alice began in a clear voice;
'I, Jonathan, take you, Jacqueline, to be my lawfully wedded wife, my constant friend, my faithful partner and my love from this day forward. In the presence of God, our family and friends, I offer you my solemn vow to be your faithful partner in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and in joy as well as in sorrow. I promise to love you unconditionally, to support you in your goals, to honour and respect you, to laugh with you and cry with you, and to cherish you' Jonny squeezed Jac's hand to remind her how much he meant the words he had spoken 'for as long as we both shall live.'
'Your turn now Jac' Alice whispered to her. 'Are you ok? We can take a minute if you need to compose yourself' the Reverend smiled kindly at Jac seeing her fighting back tears.
Jac shook her and head and smiled 'I'm fine' she squeezed Jonny's hand.
'Ok, just repeat everything I say to you' Alice whispered before adding jokingly 'it can't go too badly wrong'.
'I, Jacqueline, take you, Jonathan, to be my lawfully wedded husband, my constant friend, my faithful partner and my love…' as Jac repeated the same vows Jonny had just spoken to her she looked deep into Jonny's eyes as she spoke every word with meaning just for him.
'May I have the rings?' Alice addressed Mo who was sat in her smart best woman's dress of dusky pink dapping at her eyes with a tissue . The registrar stood up and placed the rings on the bible Alice held out to her. 'I'm sorry guys' she whispered to Jac and Jonny as she continued to wipe away tears 'it's just so beautiful'
'Let us pray'. Alice addressed the congregation as Mo returned to her seat. 'Bless, O Lord, the giving and receiving of these rings. May Jonny and Jac abide in Thy peace and grow in their knowledge of Your presence through their loving union. May the seamless circle of these rings become the symbol of their endless love and serve to remind them of the holy covenant they have entered into today to be faithful, loving, and kind to each other. Dear God, may they live in Your grace and be forever true to this union. Amen."
'Amen' rippled throughout the room.
'Take Jac's ring Jonny and place it on her left hand' Alice whispered instructions to the groom.
'Jacqueline, I give you this ring as a symbol of our vows, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honour you.' Jonny smiled as he gently slid the ring to its rightful place on Jac's finger.
'I guessing you've got idea of what you need to do now' Alice joked with Jac as she held out the bible containing Jonny's ring.
Jac placed the gold band on Jonny's finger as she spoke 'Jonathan, I give you this ring as a symbol of our vows, and with all that I am, and all that I have, I honour you.' Jac couldn't help it, her voice cracked with emotion as she spoke the last two words and tears ran freely down her cheeks.
'I knew you'd be the first to cry' Jonny joked, his voice cracking with emotion causing his own tears to fall, triggering the congregation to laugh softly once more.
'Here you go, my darlings' Yuliana appeared at Jac's side offering a pocket pack of tissues to the couple. Jac took one gratefully and passed the packet to Jonny.
'They are happy tears I promise' she joked as she dapped carefully at her eyes. Jonny laughed as he too wiped his eyes.
'I think whilst our happy couple compose themselves now would be a good time for another reading' Alice chuckled. 'Professor Hope, I believe you had something you wanted to read on Jac and Jonny's special day?'
'Yes I most certainly have' Elliot beamed as he walked to the front of the room. 'This was read out on my wedding day when I married Gina and, well, it's always held a special place my heart. It's a short poem called Fidelity by D.H. Lawrence'.
As Elliot read out the poem Jonny whispered to Jac 'Are you ok?'
'Yes' she smiled 'I honestly couldn't be happier.'
'The last bit now and then you can sign the register in peace' Alice whispered reassuringly to the couple before addressing the congregation once more. 'Because Jonny and Jac have desired each other in marriage, and have witnessed this before God and our gathering, affirming their acceptance of the responsibilities of such a union, and have pledged their love and faith to each other, sealing their vows in the giving and receiving of rings, I do proclaim that they are husband and wife in the sight of God and man. Let all people here and everywhere recognise and respect this holy union, now and forever.' Alice smiled broadly as she said to Jonny 'you may now kiss the bride!'
'Finally' Jonny joked as he put his hands on Jac's waist and leaned in to give her a soft and gentle kiss on the lips. This action was greeted with loud cheers and applause from their friends and family. As they parted Jonny could see Jac was blushing slightly which made Jonny grin even more broadly.
Alice waited for the joyous noise to die down before finishing the ceremony with 'It is now my privilege to introduce to you for the first time, Mr and Mrs Naylor-Maconie!' Another loud cheer went up as Jac and Jonny kissed once more.
