After Jac and Jonny had signed the register, using Granddad George and Mo as witnesses, and photographs of the happy couple had been taken Sacha announced on behalf of the couple that all guests were to make their way over to Albies for the reception. The true reason behind this was to give the couple a chance to slip away so they could visit the plaque dedicated to Amelia in the hospital peace garden alone. Jac wanted to lay her flowers down for her baby daughter and wanted to so in privacy.
For Sacha this had the added advantage that when the couple arrived for their reception all the guests were able to give them a loud cheer and throw rice and confetti, something Jac would have otherwise avoided.
Everyone agreed the caterers, Sacha and Mo had spent many happy hours researching for, had done a magnificent job of providing an excellent meal for the hungry guests. Fed and watered the guests had started a happy chatter about the romantic events of the day as they waited for the band to set up for the evening's entertainment.
'Ladies and gentleman could I have your attention please' Granddad George spoke as he taped his wine glass with a fork to gain everyone's attention.
'Bloody hell, what is he doing?' Jac muttered to Sacha. Sacha shrugged and grinned at Jac's obvious discomfort.
'I know Jac and Jonny didn't want any speeches but I couldn't let this day pass without speaking a few words as the proud grandfather' Granddad began. 'I promise you this will be brief and not too sentimental' he addressed the embarrassed couple. 'Today I have proudly given Jonny one of my most precious treasures, my beautiful eldest granddaughter. I have done so gladly, without even a hint of hesitation, because I know Jonny has given Jac his heart just as gladly as Jac has given Jonny hers. Love is a gift to be treasured I know the pair of you will cherish yours. Please raise your glasses to Jac and Jonny'
'To Jac and Jonny!' the guests happily toasted the couple.
Before Jac and Jonny knew it they found themselves on the dance floor for the first dance.
'This is so embarrassing' Jac muttered to Jonny as the young musician from their ceremony struck up into a rendition of Coldplay's 'us against the world' with his complete band. Jonny laughed as he held his wife in his arms and waltzed her around the dance floor.
'Don't worry it'll soon be over' he whispered to her. She rested her head on her husband's shoulder and decided to ignore the onlookers. As the song ended Jac gently kissed Jonny not caring that everyone could see them.
'Right it's time to cut the cake!' Sacha announced, allowing the young musicians to pack away their instruments and the swing rhythm and blues band he'd hired to get ready in their place. A magnificent two tier white iced cake adorned with pink icing sugar roses stood waiting in the corner of the room. Jac laughed when she saw the figurines adorning the top of the cake. Jac's figurine had her trademark red hair and was adorned with a white coat and stethoscope. Jonny's was attired in the royal blue scrubs of a charge nurse complete with his bright red crocks on his feet.
'Do you like them?' Jasmine asked her proudly.
'I do' Jac smiled at her sister 'Thank for all the work you've put into organising today, it's been perfect.' Jac put her arm around Jasmine and gave her hug as she whispered into her ear 'I'm glad you're my pushy sister getting us down that aisle'. Jasmine laughed as they pulled apart.
'I can't cut this cake on my own you know Jac' Jonny called from his position behind the master piece. Jac walked over to him and held out her hand for the knife. 'I don't think so' Jonny laughed keeping hold of it 'I'm not sure I still trust you with sharp kitchen items'.
'Place you hand on top of Jonny's Jac and cut the cake together' Granddad George instructed her getting ready with his camera. The couple cut down into the cake and posed for photographs.
'How are you feeling now?' Jac asked Jonny as Mo took over slicing the cake into neat little portions to give out the guests.
'A little sore but the painkillers Mo sorted out for me are pretty good' he smiled 'I think you might have to drive us to the hotel tonight though because they've made my head pretty woozy.'
'Why do you think I haven't been drinking?' Jac laughed as she gently kissed his cheek. 'Hey pumpkin' Jac smiled at her niece as she scooped the little girl up into her arms. 'Are you having a nice time?' she asked as they walked back to their seats.
'Yes' Ava nodded and smiled as she played with the lose curls in Jac's hair.
'Oh no you don't' Granddad George smiled as he placed a hand on Jacs elbow 'you are not sitting down until I've had a dance with my Granddaughter.'
'Seriously?' Jac sighed.
'Yes' George chuckled.
'Come on, pass Ava here' Jonny grinned at his wife as he sat himself down. Jac sighed again and gently sat Ava down on Jonny's lap. She took hold of Granddad's hand and let him lead her to the dance floor.
'I can't believe you three managed to pull this off' Michael spoke as he sat down next to Sacha, Jasmine and Mo.
'It was actually pretty easy in the end' Jasmine shrugged her shoulders.
'Jac was a lot more receptive to whole wedding thing than I thought she would be' Sacha mused as he watched Jac dancing with Granddad George.
'I can't get over how grown up Jac looks in a wedding dress' Ric Griffin spoke and he and Malick joined the group.
'You sound like a proud father' Serena laughed as she took a seat at the table 'realising their little girl is actually an adult for the first time.'
'Well she and I have had our ups and downs but I am immensely proud of Jac' Ric smiled as he took a bite of wedding cake. 'Mmm fruit cake. My favourite' he spoke sarcastically to Sacha causing him to blush slightly at the memory of the wedding cake poll disaster.
'Doesn't Jac look lovely dancing with her Grandfather?' Elliot Hope joined the group. 'It's not a sight I ever thought I'd see.' The group murmured their agreement with him.
'Well I propose a toast' Sacha held up his champagne glass 'to Team Naylor for successfully getting Jonny and Jac hitched'
'I'll drink to that' Serena laughed 'to team Naylor'
'Team Naylor' the rest of the group followed suit.
'I was a little bit surprised that Jac and Jonny are the Naylor-Maconie's' Malick spoke honestly.
'Actually Jac originally wanted to be just the Maconie's' Mo answered 'remember Elliot? When Jac was expecting Amelia and they were trying to decide on which surname?'
'Oh yes' Elliot took up the story now 'I pointed out that if Jac became Mrs Maconie and published her research under that name people might not realise was actually a continuation of 's research. After Jonny heard that he insisted on Naylor-Maconie, he is very supportive of Jac's career' Elliot smiled.
'It's quite romantic really' Jasmine mused 'for you strange medical lot any way.'
'Right I'm going to get in quick for a dance with the bride' Sacha grinned as he leapt up and quickly made his way over to the dance floor before Jac could have chance to leave it. The group watched as Jac grumpily obliged to Sacha's request for a quick turn around the dance floor.
'You know it is also tradition for the maid of honour and the best man to dance at the reception too' Serena teased Mo 'you'll leave people disappointed if they don't get a dance from yourself and Sacha'.
'Oh no' Mo casually waved aside Serena's teasing 'I think that tradition sank when I became Jonny's best woman and Sacha became Jac's man of honour.'
'Well then perhaps you could just share a dance as lovers' Michael took his turn to tease the registrar now.
Malick choked on his drink at Michael's bluntness. 'It's alright Mo we all know' Ric laughed at the indignant look on Mo's face as he thumped Malick on the back.
'Well it's nice to know Jac and Jonny's wedding isn't the only thing you've been gossiping about' Mo spoke grumpily.
'It's not gossip if it's true' Serena laughed.
'Come on Mo' Ric spoke kindly as he held out is arm to the embarrassed woman 'lets go and rescue Jac's poor feet from Sacha's clumsy dancing'. Mo took his proffered arm and they walked together to the dance floor.
'Can I please cut in?' Ric asked as he tapped Sacha on the shoulder.
'Of course' Sacha grinned as Jac scowled.
'Don't look like that Jac' Ric laughed 'it's only polite for the bride to dance with her guests.'
'Why isn't it polite of the groom to dance with his guests?' Jac grumbled as Ric took over from Sacha.
'I think everyone is taking pity on the poor bruised hero' Ric laughed 'and besides I thought your poor feet needed rescuing from Sacha's'
'Poor Mo' Jac laughed now as she watched Mo wincing with every other step as she danced with her partner 'I think you'll need to rescue her from her own beau next.'
'It's good to see you so happy Jac' Ric smiled.
'Don't start getting sentimental on me Mr Griffin, we both know it won't end well' Jac smiled as she caught a glimpse of her husband and grandfather playing snakes and ladders with Ava at one of the tables.
'May I interrupt?' Mr Hanssen suddenly appeared beside Ric.
'Absolutely' Ric positively beamed at Jac's horrified expression as he handed her over to Henrik Hanssen.
'You should count yourself lucky Mrs Naylor-Maconie that you are only required to dance with your guests' Henrik misread Jac's reluctance to dance with him. 'If this were Sweden it would be tradition for all the guests to kiss you.'
'Then I will consider this to be the lessor of two evils' Jac spoke bluntly but politely.
'I have come to congratulate you on your nuptials and to wish you a merry Christmas' Henrik smiled at Jac 'I'm afraid I must be leaving this happy event rather early this evening if I am to catch my flight.'
'Your flight?' Jac questioned.
'Yes. I am returning home to Sweden for the festive period to spend time with my son and his family. I trust you will be too occupied with your own family to follow me this year?' Henrik joked.
'You have a son?'
'Yes and a grandson and another grandchild is expected in the new year.' Henrik smiled as he spoke about his family.
'Congratulations, I had no idea you were a grandfather' Jac smiled now too 'are you planning to stay in Sweden for the birth?'
'Possibly. I will have to see how things go'
'Could I possibly have another dance with my wife Mr Hanssen?' Jonny suddenly appeared on the dance floor with Ava in his arms.
'Of course' Henrick smiled at the young man as he let go of Jac 'you really do make a very pretty bride Ms Naylor-Maconie, congratulations Nurse Naylor-Maconie' Mr Hanssen nodded his head formally at the couple before adding to Ava 'Merry Christmas Miss Burrows.'
'Wow, you got a dance from Hanssen!' Jonny muttered as the watched Henrik walked away.
'I know, thank god you rescued me' Jac laughed 'I think the conversation was about to reach an awkward end.'
'Right one dance with our wee miss and then she's promised to get changed into her pyjamas without a fuss, haven't you Ava?' Jonny spoke as he balanced Ava between himself and Jac as they waltzed around the dance floor.
Ava yawed as she nodded her head.
'Its been a long day hasn't it Pumpkin?' Jac spoke sympathetically to the tired little girl.
'Do you think we could also get changed and sneak out at some point soon?' Jonny whispered to Jac who nodded her head in agreement.
'Aren't you going to throw the bouquet Ms Naylor?' Mary Claire asked sadly as Jac and Jonny were about to take their leave to the hotel they had booked for their nights honeymoon.
'It's Mrs Naylor-Maconie now' Jonny corrected his fellow nurse happily as he planted a kiss on Jac's cheek. Even dressed simply as she was now in a blue wool dress she still looked like a beautiful bride Jonny mused to himself. After getting Ava changed into her pyjamas and dressing gown the couple had changed out of their formal attire and into comfortable clothes to travel in. Unfortunately escaping unseen had proven to be impossible.
'You can throw mine Jac' Jasmine offered from her position in her wheelchair. The young woman looked pale and exhausted.
'Are you sure you're ok?' Jac asked her softly as she placed a sleeping Ava into her sister's arms.
'Of course I am, I'm just tried.' Jasmine smiled as she gladly took hold of her daughter 'We're going to head home with Mo just as soon as you and Jonny have gone.'
'Right one bouquet' Sacha happily announced as he handed Jac Jasmine's flowers.
'Seriously?' Jac sighed for what felt like the umpteenth time that evening.
'Gather round ladies, the bride is going to throw the bouquet' Sacha called out happily, ignoring Jac. 'Turn around Jac and then just toss the flowers over your shoulder' he instructed his friend in an undertone.
'Well here goes nothing' Jac muttered to Jasmine as she did as Sacha instructed. She threw the bouquet with a bit more energy than she realised as the flowers over shot the squealing group of waiting woman and instead landed in the arms of a surprised Mo.
'Toss, I said toss not throw with force' Sacha muttered in Jac's ear as they joined in with the applause for an embarrassed Mo.
'Whatever' Jac muttered back, a grin forming on her lips. 'Just let me know when I'm required for best woman duties.'
'It's just a silly tradition' Sacha laughed nervously.
Jac and Jonny were happily waved off by their friends and family. Jac had been relieved their guests had left their car un-decorated. The truth was none of them had been brave enough to attempt it.
'Sacha if I tell you something, do you promise not to get mad at me?' Jasmine spoke quietly at Sacha's elbow as her sister's car drove out of sight.
'What is it?' Sacha knelt down beside his best friends sister.
'I don't feel well' Jasmine admitted 'my chest hurts and feels tight'. Tears began to form in her eyes 'I just didn't want to spoil Jac's day.'
'Right, well at least you're in the right place' Sacha joked softly with the young woman trying to put her at ease. 'Let Mo take Ava and we'll get you checked out'
Jonny had insisted on carrying both his and Jac's overnight bags up their suite himself. He unlocked the door and made Jac wait outside whilst he dumped the bags inside the room.
'Why am I stood out here like a lemon?' Jac grumbled.
'Because there is one more tradition we haven't done yet' Jonny smiled as he picked Jac up of the floor into his arms.
'Don't be such an idiot' Jac grumbled 'you need to watch those stitches in your arm.'
'I hardly think your skinny arse is going cause me too much strain' Jonny laughed as he carried Jac over the threshold into the room and pushed the door closed with his foot. Stepping forward he lost his footing as he tripped over one of the bags. Fortunately he managed to stumble face down onto the soft bed with Jac still in his arms. Despite a brief moment of panic the couple suddenly burst into hysterics.
'You are such an idiot' Jac laughed affectionately as she lifted her head to kiss Jonny lightly on the lips.
'I love you Jac' Jonny suddenly became serious as he kissed his wife back.
'I love you too' Jac whispered to him matching his seriousness as he entwined the fingers of her left hand with his.
'I can't believe you are finally my wife' Jonny gently trailed his free hand down the side of Jac's face, running his thumb across the sharp ridge of her cheek bone. 'There are no words to express how beautiful I find you or just how much I love you' he whispered to her.
'Show me then' Jac whispered softly before she received her husband's passionate kiss.
