Anna runs from her classroom. As usual, she struggled with her chemistry quiz and was the one of the last to finish. She has to run to the gymnasium to finish setting up for the pep rally that will commence in an hour.
"Hey! Watch it!" Eugene warns her when she almost knocks him off the ladder with the gym door.
"Sorry, Eugene!" Anna apologizes hurriedly. "I didn't see you there!"
"Well, you can slow down now. We're almost done here." Eugene ties one last streamer to a post.
Anna looks around at the decorations. There are big banners with their school's team name painted on hanging around the entire gym. There are small piles of red and white long balloons and mini pom-poms by the bleachers for the audience to use later on. The speakers and stage are also set up, ready for the hosts to hype up the crowd with chants and cheers. The basketball court is freshly cleaned to allow the different varsities to set up and showcase their talents in their own segments.
"Wow, this all looks amazing," Anna says admiringly.
"Hey, Anna!" Rapunzel walks up to her. "How was your test?"
"Hi, Rapunzel. Oh, I think I barely passed that one. Sorry I didn't make it here on time to help with the decorations."
"No, it's totally okay! Everyone in the council's worked so hard with organizing this past month. Don't worry about today. We wouldn't have made you rush your exam. Besides, a bunch of friends volunteered to help us out. Right, Flynn?"
"Yes, cap'n," he salutes Rapunzel as he climbs down from the ladder.
"I guess I owe you, Eugene," Anna tells him. "If you weren't here to fill in my spot, we probably wouldn't have finished on time."
"I'd love to take credit, but actually Kristoff did more," Eugene jerks his head toward the other side of the gym. Anna looks to see Kristoff carrying a box of flags painted with the school colors. Kristoff sees them and waves. Rapunzel makes her way to him.
"Rapunzel," Kristoff calls to her. "I'm just gonna go change and meet my teammates, so we can fix last minute stuff for our demo."
Rapunzel walks Kristoff to the exit, but before he leaves, she leans up to give him a quick kiss on the cheek as thanks. Upon seeing this little moment, Anna quickly looks away while Eugene involuntarily clenches his fists. Rapunzel hurries back to her friends and tells Eugene to meet with his tennis team. She and Anna make their way to the archery team to prepare, as well.
By 6pm, the pep rally is in full swing. It seems as though the entire student body with some teachers have showed up to support the different varsities. The pep rally was mainly organized to hype up and increase support for the annual interscholastic sports competition happening a few months away.
The cheerleaders and drummers have really energized the crowd. Each varsity team has prepared a short demonstration to show off the members' skills and talents in their respective sports.
It's the football team's turn to show off the different ball tricks they can do. Some show off one at a time or in pairs, doing fancy passes and kicks. Other players on the sidelines are lined up, each holding a card with a letter to spell out the cheer "GO VIKINGS!"
When it comes for their finale, Kristoff, the team captain, steps up to the basketball court. He does a few fancy kicks which the crowd cheers loudly for. Suddenly, he signals to his teammates on the sidelines, and they run to the court and line up behind him. They flip the cards they're holding, so that it changes from the original "GO VIKINGS!" to "4 RAPUNZEL!". Rapunzel's archery teammates giggle and nudge her teasingly, as she blushes and tries to hide the wide grin spreading across her face.
Kristoff stands in front of the line, facing one end of the basketball court with his back turned to his teammates who are still holding their signs. He kicks the ball high and hard enough behind him, and it sails passed his teammates and shoots right through the basketball hoop on the other end. The crowd goes wild, and the entire football team carries their captain on their shoulders in celebration for a well-executed trick.
"Holy cow!" Olaf, who is hosting the event, exclaims after the football team's demonstration. "That was really something, wasn't it, Eret?"
"I gotta say, I'm impressed," Eret, his co-host, says in disbelief. "That Kristoff's really got some talent. No doubt that talent will help take us all the way to the championships in the coming months." The crowd cheers in agreement.
"Yup," Olaf nods. "And that Rapunzel must be one lucky girl. Am I right, ladies?"
The female half of the crowd cheers in support. The hosts then introduce the next team. It's the kung fu team, and they are unwilling to be outdone in tricks by any of the sports varsities.
The whole team has managed to recreate their own version of the kung fu fights one might see in the movies, complete with complicated turns and flips. Even the falls and returns are artfully and skillfully executed. The crowd's mood changes from one of excitement into one of intense concentration. They are completely taken in by the fight and react with as much anticipation as if they were witnessing a real battle. Gasps, oohs, and ahhs replace the whistles and shouts. The climax is brought about when Jack Frost parkours up a post and somersaults downwards, landing with a punch to the ground, giving off an imaginary force that sends his teammates flying backwards and knocking them to the ground. He stands and makes a final pose, just as the crowd erupts from their seats in a deafening cheer.
Jack smiles widely and signals his teammates to rise, and they all take a bow. He does his best to hide the fact that his landing was a little off and that he needs medical attention. When the next varsity team comes up to do their demonstration, he hops off to look for Elsa.
He finds her watching beside the bleachers on the seniors' side of the crowd.
"Pssst, Elsa," he whispers.
Startled, she looks back to see Jack wincing and sees him trying to balance on one leg. She looks with concern and approaches him.
"And here I was, all impressed thinking you managed to pull off that crazy stunt without a scratch," she says, shaking her head. "Come on, I'll take you to the infirmary, so we can take a proper look at it."
"Thanks," Jack says, putting an arm around her shoulder and allowing her to help support his weight as they hobble out of the gym. "What would I do without my guardian angel?"
"Man, I'd hate to be your guardian angel," she says teasingly. "You almost gave me a heart attack with that stunt, you know."
"Oh Elsa," Jack sighs with exaggeration. "You do care."
"Oh, shut up or I just might accidentally trip your leg and really break it."
"Now, now, those aren't very good bedside manners, doc."
"I never said I was an angel," she smiles wickedly.
"How's the ankle?" a voice asks them from behind.
They turn around to see a slim blonde standing in the empty corridor.
"It's fine," Jack says. "Just needs a little ice."
"Actually, I noticed your move was a little off. I've practiced it enough to know when it's done wrong. It looked like the trajectory of your somersault off that post should have caused you a more serious injury, but you managed to dissipate some of the force by landing in a more favorable manner."
The pair stare blankly at the blonde teen for a moment before Elsa bursts out laughing.
"Well, Jack," Elsa ruffles his hair. "Looks like you've met your match. I guess you should take a few pointers from her, so that you don't hurt yourself next time."
"Hey, not so fast," Jack says defensively. "How do I know you've actually tried that move and that you're not just throwing random explanations at me?"
"Oh, sorry," the blonde says. "When I talk about anything martial arts-related, I forget my manners. I'm Astrid Hofferson. I'm kind of new here. And yeah, I'm pretty obsessed with anything martial arts."
"Jack Frost," he says in return. "And this is my personal slave Elsa." Elsa elbows his side.
"You know I have no problem leaving you here," she tells him half-jokingly.
"I'm just kidding," Jack grins. "This is my lifesaver, Elsa. Anyway, if you seem to know so much about martial arts, why don't you try out for the kung fu team?"
"I am trying out for the team," she states. "Next week, actually. You should come, so you can finally see how it's done right."
"I like this girl," Elsa laughs before stopping, seemingly realizing something. "Astrid Hofferson? I know you! You used to play with my brothers Hiccup and Hans when we were younger. I didn't recognize you! It's been so long! Do you remember me?"
Astrid reddens suddenly and looks down before nodding. "Yeah, it has been quite some time."
"Well, I gotta get this birdbrain to the infirmary. Good luck on your tryouts next week! I hope you'll finally be able to deflate his head and take his ego down a peg or two."
Despite herself, Astrid can't help but smile and laugh a bit at Elsa's comment. "Do you need help bringing him?"
"No, it's okay," Elsa says sincerely. "You should go and watch the other demonstrations. The school's teams are pretty good and fun to watch."
Astrid says okay and waves goodbye to them.
"See you, rookie," Jack calls after her. "Fresh meat always better be careful." His look lingers after her for a couple of seconds before they continue on their way. "You know, she's not bad-looking."
"Careful, Jack," Elsa warns him with a smile. "I don't think you can mess around with a girl like that. She looks like she might actually be able to take you on."
This time, it's Jack's turn to ruffle Elsa's hair. "Aww, don't be jealous. I know how much you take care of me. You'll always be my number one."
"You're such an oaf," she teases him. "I'm sorry. I wish I could say the same thing about you, but unfortunately, I have to tend to so many other guys' broken limbs and hearts."
"Why'd you gotta be so cruel when I only have love for you?" he says, jokingly clutching his heart. The two continue to laugh and tease each other as they finally reach the infirmary.
