Time Doesn't Always Run Straight
Interlude
This interlude will just cover Jestine's time away from Torchwood. Sorry if it's a little confusing, it does jump around a little. It's basically just a snap shot of what Jestine does when she isn't at Torchwood. A few familiar faces will pop up so I hope you enjoy them. Adam isn't quite done yet, sorry about that but I will try to have it finished soon. Thank you so much for everyone reading, there are over 100 views each chapter, you lot just blow me away. And a special thanks to those reviewing, not only is your support amazing but your feedback and ideas have helped shaped and improve this story, so thank you for everything.
"Watch it." Jestine snarls as someone pushes past her.
"You've got a problem?" The person turns around. They're a humanoid leopard woman.
"Don't waste my time." Jestine sneers at them.
"What do you mean by that?" The leopard woman hisses.
"I mean don't waste my time with your pointless threats." Jestine elaborates.
"See how pointless you think they are when I rip you limb from limb." She growls.
"I'll like to see you try." Jestine laughs at her.
The woman growls as she lashes out at Jestine.
Jestine quickly dodges and slashes the women's face with the knife she had slipped from her sleeve.
The woman howls in pain at the wound as Jestine pins her to the ground, the knife against her throat.
"Like I said, don't waste my time with your pointless threats." Jestine mocks as she slams her foot into the women's stomach before standing up and sauntering away, slipping the knife back into place as she goes.

"May I buy you are drink?" A man sits down beside her. Jestine is seated at a crowded bar. All kinds of aliens mingle around the dimly lit establishment, many of them with visible weapons.
"Or we could skip the drink." Jestine smirks.
"We don't even know each other's names yet." The man chuckles.
"And we need to why?" Jestine asks.
"How do I know you won't try to rob me?" He retorts.
"And you think knowing my name would change that." Jestine taunts.
"Would make it easier for the police to find you." He answers.
Jestine snorts. "If I rob you, the police ain't going to be able to help you."
"And why is that?" The man queries.
"I don't exist." Jestine whispers conspiringly.
The man chuckles.
Jestine smirks. "Don't believe if you want. River, if you must know."
"Alonso." He replies. "Alonso Flame."
Jestine smirks again. "Well, Alonso Flame, what will it be, drink or back to my cabin?" She gets up and starts walking away.
Alonso quickly sculls his drink before following her.

Jestine rushes across the base, bursting into the barracks.
"What's the status?" The commander demands.
"Sontarans surround us on all sides." She huffs. "Reinforcements 10 minutes away."
He pales slightly at the news but stays focus. "Chance of holding them off till then?"
"Seen better odds." Jestine replies. "They outnumber us 100 to 1."
"So the best course of action?" He seeks her advice.
"Kill as many of the bastards as we can." Jestine grins as she loads her gun.
He nods and gathers the troops to make a final stand. Jestine runs out into position.
"Sontarans have breached the parameter" Jestine yells across the yard as the Sontaran army comes into view.
"Right men. Shoot and kill as many as you can." The commander orders. "Reinforcement is only 10 minutes away."
The soldiers open fire on the Sontarans. Jestine along with them, taking down members of the descending army.
Jestine continues to fire as her comrades fall and explosions go off.
"Commander, fall back." She calls out as the Sontarans continue to march. "Reinforcements should be here soon."
Jestine continues to fire as they retreat back but it doesn't matter. There are far too many. The remaining troops are backed into a courtyard, the enemy surrounding them.
"Last stand." The commander yells, none of the soldiers expecting to last much longer.
Jestine ducks behind an old barrel as she re-loads. She quickly returns to firing again. They can hear the sound of helicopters, reinforcement is near.
"Just hang on!" She calls out to the remaining troops. She glances over at the commander, just in time to see a bullet pierce his side. She curses as she runs over, firing over her shoulder.
She mutters curses as she presses down on the wound. But it's no good, the blood is gushing out of the wound.
"Good battle." The commander chuckles. "Worse ways to die."
"Dead is dead. It doesn't matter how you got there." Jestine glares. "Had to get shot when reinforcement is right there." Jestine indicates to the helicopters that are dropping bombs on the Sontarans further away from the troops.
"I'm sorry." The commander pulls something from his pocket. It's a pocket album made from metal. "Give this to my family." He stammers from the blood loss. "Tell them."
"How many?" Jestine asks as he starts to slip away.
"More than you." His chuckle quickly turns into a cough. "Killed at least 30 of those bastards just now."
"I'll make sure they know." Jestine holds him as his life slips away.
Jestine quickly pulls out two guns from her leg holsters. "Bastards." She mutters as she shoots the enemy. She pays no attention to the helicopter that lands behind her, troops pouring out. She stands with them as the shoot down every last Sontaran, ignoring the bullet wound gaping from her shoulder.

"Who are you?" He demands from Jestine. She's suspended from the roof by chains secured at her wrists.
She remains silent.
"Answer me." He whips her with a cat o' nine tails, the ends tipped with blades. She doesn't flinches, just spits blood at him. He punches her in retaliation.
"Why were you trying to free our slave?" He commands.
She laughs.
"I don't know why you think this is funny. Unless you speak you're facing the death penalty."
"Go ahead." She mocks.
"We ran your DNA. You're not one of them. Why would you risk your life for them?"
"I was bored." Jestine smirks. "Nothing better to do. And I suggest you check on your slaves."
"You failed. You should be begging for mercy, not playing games." The guard warns her.
"Whose playing? Go on, send one of your pets to check if you don't believe me."
The guard looks at her wearily before turning to one of the other men that had been watching. "Make sure this attempt hasn't given them any ideas." The other guard runs off to fulfil his orders.
"Tell us who your accomplices were and we might grant you merciful death." The guard suggests as he sharpens a long knife.
"Do you best." Jestine challenges him.
He saunters over to where she was chained up. "Tell me who helped you!"
Jestine merely raises a challenging eyebrow.
"Tell me." He screams as he drives the knife deep into her shoulder.
Jestine recoils from the pain but doesn't scream. She pants from the pain.
"Who was it?" He asks again while twisting the knife. Jestine grits her teeth but doesn't reply.
The guard stomps back over to the table, grabbing another knife. He stops suddenly, his hand flying to his ear. "What?"
He lets out an almighty roar and throws the knife at Jestine. It hits her in the torso. She gasps in shock.
"Where are they?" He approaches her like a raging animal. "They were there when we caught you. How did they escape?"
Despite the pain Jestine's lips twitch. "Lose something?"
The guard pulls the knife out of her torso before plunging it back in. Jestine thrashes from the pain.
"Find them." He commands the guards standing guard around the room.
"What about her?" One of them asks.
"Let her bleed to death." He growls before storming out, the other guards quickly on his heels.
"Thought he would never leave." Jestine mutters as she fiddles with the cuffs that held her. After a few moments she drops to the ground with a hiss of pain. One hand presses against her torso while the other flies across her Vortex Manipulator. There is a flash of light and then she is gone.

"Run, don't stop, just run for the escape pods." Jestine yells at the startled passengers. She's aboard a spaceship, the passengers shocked at her sudden appearance. The ship suddenly lurches. "They are here. Run or die." She warns as she pulls out a heavily modified machine gun. At that moment the doors bursts open. In steps the Cybermen. The passengers start screaming and running around in a panic.
"Escape pods." Jestine yells at them and starts herding them in the right direction as the Cybermen slowly approach. She quickly fires at the closest one. The force knocks it back into the one behind it, a gaping hole where the bullet pierced. "Who's next?" She asks as the last of the passengers flee through the door.
"You will be upgraded." The Cybermen reply.
"I think not." Jestine smirks as she shoots at another.
"Then you are incompatible. You will be deleted." It responds.
"Try me." Jestine mocks as she shoots a couple more, all the time backing away.
"Help me." A voice calls out. Jestine glances towards the direction of the sound. She curses loudly. A child had hidden under the table in the commotion but now a Cyberman had hold of them.
"Your parent deserves to be converted." Jestine declares as she shoots the Cyberman that was holding the child. "Come on." She drags the boy through the doors the passengers had fled through.
"I'm scared." He cries.
"They're Cybermen. You'll have to be stupid to not be scared." Jestine scowls the child as she hauls them through the ship.
"Are you scared?" He asks.
"No." Jestine grins as she takes down two more. "They're just Cybermen."
"But you said." The boy complains.
"I said you'd have to be stupid to not be scared. Said nothing about me." Jestine retorts as she yanks the boy along.
They are one corridor from the escape pod when suddenly a Cyberman blocks their path. The other Cybermen are close at their heels. Jestine tries to shoot the Cyberman but her gun is empty.
"We're going to die." The boy wails.
"Not today." Jestine mutters as she slams into the Cyberman. She manages to push it over but it grabs hold of her shoulder before she can get past. "Run as fast as you can." She orders the boy, kicking him away just before the Cyberman starts to shock her. "Tell them to leave immediately. Just go!" She orders as the boy looks at her in shock.
He flees at the sight of the other Cybermen appearing.
Jestine is convulsing as the electricity flows through her. "You will be deleted." The Cyberman tells her.
"Then I'm taking you with me." Jestine gasps as she grabs her knife. She plunges it deep into the Cyberman's chest. "Gold plated. You really should do something about that." Jestine wheezes as it collapses onto her.

A women stares at the gravestone. It's like any gravestone found on earth. The red sky however shows it isn't Earth.
"You've been running long enough. Go back." A man steps out of a blue police box.
"Because you're one to speak? How many years now Doctor?" Jestine rises from the gravestone.
"Too long, not long enough." He replies.
"Is it almost time?" She asks as she strokes the blue police box.
"A couple more stops then yes." He replies.
"Surely there is another way?" Jestine asks as she turns to face the man.
"No, there really isn't."
"Well then, until the next time our timelines met at the wrong point." Jestine adjusts his bow-tie.
"Promise me you'll go back."
Jestine nods. "We can only out run timelines for so long."
Hopefully you enjoyed it, please let me know what you thought. I promise to work really hard on Adam and get the next chapter up soon.
