Max and Minus found themselves on a dark wasteland filled with nothing but a ground made of rocks that stretched infinitely. The natural illumination from the skies above was the only light to the dead lands. Minus looked at Max with full determination.
"May the best dream win," he said and held out a hand.
From his palm appeared tons of dangerous piranhas with sharp fangs, and sailed through the air toward Max. Knowing he had no choice but to fight, Max lifted his Keyblade and willed for something to trap fish. From within the blade, small bubbles emerged, flew towards the piranhas and encased them. The trapped fishes whipped, thrashed and struggled to break free, but the delicate bubbles had them firmly trapped inside. Max then pointed his weapon at a frustrated Minus and willed for long vines. The ground shook briefly and then small branches appeared. Minus looked bewildered at the plants as they grew larger and larger by every second. The vines continued to grow toward him until they finally reached his feet. Minus whipped his hand, and instantly the trees withered and fell. He opened his mouth then and insects emerged from within like they'd been trapped inside his stomach, even though Max knew it was really his imagination's doing. Thinking quickly, he swiped his weapon in the air as he conjured up a big can of bug spray and willed it to spray at the bugs, killing them all. He then dreamed of butterflies, wiggled the Keyblade and the bug spray blew out small butterflies with flapping wings.
Minus extended his hand and willed a tongue of dancing flames at the butterflies, setting them all ablaze. In just that moment, the environment glowed.
Max G knocked back two Heartless while Lavagirl made it for the volcano's mouth, where hot lava boiled to no end. According to her, she had to do this alone. Not that he knew if she had known what to do, but the way she eyed at him, he knew that she was asking him to trust her. So he did. Besides, the heat of the boiling volcano felt uncomfortably hot to his skin. The closer they got to the top, the hotter it became.
Lavagirl stood on the edge of the volcano. Lava boiled with overwhelming heat that seemed to have enough power to destroy everything it touched. Every being, every planet, every lifeform. But not her. Without hesitation, she dove into the bright volcano. Max G looked and waited patiently. At first nothing happened. Only sounds of boiling bubbles. Boiling stronger. Then the mouth's fiery light grew.
"Yes," he screamed victoriously. "You did it!"
Marlene fought the airborn Heartless while PJ and Sarox dealt with those on the snowy ground.
"They sure are multiplying," PJ noticed while waving his wand at another monster.
"Doesn't mean we can't hold them back," Sarox said with his back to his partner and shoot more magic balls at his front.
More Heartless appeared around them. The situation felt heavier by the second. Sarox knew they couldn't keep this up forever, and hoped that Lavagirl was doing her part.
Sharkboy felt his stomach fluttering with laughter: the sight of Mr. Electric getting his circuits chewed on by his sharks was too funny. The round robot screamed, in fear or mercy, he didn't know, nor did he care.
A few moments later, however, he did. Emerging from behind the low icy mountain, hundreds of plughounds stood in a horizontal stance that looked practically like a march.
"Oh, my... shark," he cursed.
Then a sound of laser caught momentarily his attention and he saw two of his comrades lying lifelessly on the icy ground with black smoke flowing out of their burned skins. Mr. Electric was laughing his signature victory laugh. His metallic claws glowed with energy. "Prepare for the mega hertz!"
Sharkboy fisted his hands so hard that his knuckles burned. He snarled to show his sharp fangs, and in that second, all he wanted to do was rip that cyborg's circuits to shreds with them, the fear from the sight of plughounds gone.
"Charge!"
The army of plughounds raced down from their peak in his direction. All of them sparkled with electricity.
The boiling lava brightened, burned with deadly power. Max G could feel the heat emanating from down below as he watched on the edge. He felt a shake on the ground, and realized immediately what was happening. He knew he had to get away from there, and broke off in a run. He barely ran twenty feet when a deafening sound of explosion broke out following by a powerful force that sent him flying into the air. He felt the lightness, the absence of gravity as he ascended, then began to drop. He wrapped his arms around his head and torso, ready to block and roll the way he was trained back home to protect his body when meeting the ground. Falling and rolling a few feet away, his mind lost orientation. It took a half-second before he could tell ground from sky, and looked back at the bright volcano, where on the edge stood the glorious Lavagirl.
"Stand back," she said. Her hands burned with fiery might.
Max G forced strength down into his legs and ran toward a boulder that looked about as tall as his father, Goofy and wide as the half the Gummi Ship's length, and ducked underneath it for cover. Sounds of rockets erupted from behind, then, in a matter of seconds, the night sky turned to day. The Darkness enveloping the Planet burned away by light.
Marlene's heart worried for Sharkboy. With her wings carrying her up in the air, she could see his army's struggles against Mr. Electric's plughounds, and they weren't doing well. One by one, Sharkboy's army got shocked and fell. Her worries redirected to herself when a Heartless came at her. She began to swipe her Keyblade at it, but a sudden ray of sunlight beat her to the punch. She then turned to the volcano, now burning with a tower of red and gold light shooting up towards the sky. The veil of dark clouds burned away like curtains catching fire. Looking down at Sarox and PJ, she witnessed the monsters' evaporation from the light's power.
"Look," she screamed to Sarox and PJ.
They both gazed at the light and got the same awestruck expressions that was on her face a moment ago.
"They did it," said Sarox.
Marlene descended to the ground. "Sharkboy is not doing so well with Mr. Electric. We should help them."
Sarox nodded and sprinted to a run right before the words let's go left his lips.
Minus dropped his hand and Max followed his glance to where a powerful tower of light was bursting into the dark sky and burning holes into the Darkness. Beyond the cracks of the dark clouds, light blue colors of the sky were barely visible, but there nontheless.
"What is going on?" Minus asked, shocked.
Max met his eyes again, and for a moment, something flickered in his opponent's eyes. Something other than anger and hatred. "It's over, Minus. You can't destroy this world anymore."
The emotions in his eyes seemed to open a little wider just before they vaporized, and then anger was there again. "It's not over yet. I'm going to destroy you and your pathetic little dreams!"
Max felt his own anger rise in his chest and it took some effort to keep his cool. How could someone hate him so much? What had he ever done to Linus? They were both in the same class, but he couldn't remember doing anything to upset him. It had always been the other way around. Why was he so bent on destroying his dreams? Didn't he have dreams of his own too?
Aqua Flame shook in his grip as though it was roaring to life. He looked down on it. Its tip glowed with a warm feeling. It was the familiar warmth that he always felt when he was dreaming. Comfortable and safe. Then the warmth touched where his hand held the tilt of the Keyblade and ran up his arm like electricity all the way up to his head. Then a transparent image filled his vision. He could still see Minus' hateful eyes, but it was partially obscured by the moving picture in his mind. He saw him. Linus. The boy who lived to make his life miserable. He was younger in this vision, probably by two or three years. He was cornered by a group of bullies his age. One of them, slightly bigger than the rest (the little ring leader, Max assumed), snatched a sketchbook out of his hands and began to rip it apart, then tore the pages to shreds. On many pages there was a boy wearing a long blue cape worn on his back. Linus cried the whole time it happened while the others laughed. Max recognized the sadness. It was the destruction of a dream. Linus's dream.
Another image appeared. And he saw himself sitting from across from the school yard, away from the rest of the crowd and writing in his journal. He realized that he was seeing himself through Linus's eyes. It was strange. He could always see his own reflection in a mirror, but this vision was weird. Weirder even, he felt a touch of jealousy and anger. Jealousy of someone who has what he once had; and anger from the reminder that he no longer does.
So Linus's dreams were destroyed and he had since dedicated his life to ruining the dreams of others because they reminded him of what he had lost, Max finally understood.
The vision disappeared and he saw the hateful Minus again, but now he also saw something else. A little boy who had lost his way and been robbed of his innocence. Max's anger subsided.
"You don't have to do this," he said.
"Oh, yes, I do!" Minus argued and threw a fireball to prove his point.
Max pointed with his Keyblade and melted the fiery sphere with a freezing spell. He did not want to fight anymore, but it seemed he was not given a choice. And then the anger came back, along with the desire to destroy.
No, it can't go down like this, he told himself. It would be so much easier to give in and let the anger take over, but it will not be a solution.
