1- Sorry for the late update. Hope you like it anyways!
RidingAngelxspy-I know I wanted to make one…alas. Ari and Gibbs…well, it's a long road and I can guarantee that they will never like each other so you'll have to read to find out what happens there. Ziva will be showing up more, so no fears there. Audrey will show up in the next chapter.
This chapter was so hard! One, I trying to focus on my AC fic since it's going to be THREE stories long…and I really need to get the ball rolling on that. Two, I had this chapter all in my head, and tried to get it to come out the way I wanted it too…alas I'm not sure that it turned out the way I wanted, but I still hope you enjoy.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
'The Road of Good Intentions'
Her heartbeat was thundering in her ears, as she stared at Ari with a helpless expression. His hand had somehow hanging on her wrist, his fingers tracing her racing pulse. "Excuse me?" Were the words that came out of Evelyn's mouth when she found her voice. She stared down at Ari, her mind unable to process your understand his words that left her rooted to the spot.
"You play yourself as the victim," Ari commented, pushing himself up into a sitting position. "You're far too strong for that. I suppose though living with years of fear and doubt, you've gotten used to falling into that role."
Her brows furrowed, and her eyes narrowed into a glare. "Don't try to profile me," she told him, sharply.
"I am just returning the favor," Ari stated. His brown eyes lingering on her face too long, and she looked away. "Is it because of your father?"
All the air whooshed out of Evelyn, and her head snapped towards him. "What is that supposed to mean?" She demanded heatedly. Ari opened his mouth to reply when the sound of glass breaking came from somewhere downstairs. Her heart leapt in her throat, and she went to get her gun when Ari's hand held her back. Her blue eyes met his and he pressed a finger to his lips, telling her to be silence.
Her lips pressed into a fine line, and she nodded. He released her arm and grabbed his gun from the night stand without making one tiny sound. Evelyn grabbed her gun from underneath her pillow and followed him from behind. His hand slowly grasped the door handle and he turned it quietly. He peered through the darkness of the upstairs, trying to detect any movement, his finger on his gun ready to fire. When everything was still he slipped out, and pointed his gun down the stairs.
"Is it them?" She mouthed at Ari.
Ari gave a stiff nod. He heard them discussing on how they planned on torturing him and Evelyn, and he bit back a growl when one made a crass comment about Evie's mouth. That's when something was thrown and landed on the stairs.
Ari's eyes widened in reorganization, and he flung himself over Evelyn and pressed her face into his chest. They both fell back into the darkened hallway as the flash grenade exploded. He closed his eyes tightly, then opened them after a long moment. The light still hang in the air, but it was far from blinding. Gritting his teeth together as footsteps were coming up the stair way, he pulled Evelyn to her feet. "Go! Hurry!" He told her hoarsely and shoved her forward. She stared at him a split second, before heading down the hallway. He moved after her, his head craned over his shoulder and his gun poised to fire.
Ari after a moment moved after her. He caught Evelyn glancing back at him, a worry frown upon her lips. He would have smirked, and said something to taunting to get her riled up if circumstances were different. Instead, he kept his face blank and his mind focused on his surroundings. He reached grabbing a door handle, and nodded for Evelyn to get in.
There was no hesitation as she moved through the door, and Ari shut it behind her before breaking the door handle in such a way it wouldn't budge. Evelyn whirled around and saw the shut door, and she slammed her fist against it. "Ari, what the hell do you think you are doing?" She called out in a rough whisper.
Ari looked up at the shadows growing larger by the second and knew in a few seconds they would be one him. He whispered back through the door, "Giving you time to run! Now go!"
Evelyn's hand trembled on the doorway, as a breath escaped her lips. That…that infuriating man! Did he think that sacrificing himself was going to help? Looking around, she saw a window with a large tree just outside of it. Rolling up her sleeves, and holstering her gun in the back of her skirt, she opened the window with a determined frown. "If anyone has the right to kill you, you ass, it's me!"
Meanwhile Ari slid his gun underneath a nearby in table, just within reach. He had to give Evelyn time to escape which meant he had to keep the occupied. He thought about shooting them both, but he knew they were heavily armed, and he would most likely be mowed down before he could retaliate. He drew in a breath to keep his heartbeat steady, and concocted a plan. Once they within arms length and thought they had the upper hand, then he would take them down.
The next few moments blurred together. As soon as they came around the corner they flew at him. He let them get there hits and kicks, they wanted to make their revenge sweet and a quick death wasn't for them. Ari endured the pain until he had them exactly where he wanted. In one swift move, he kicked-Antonio if he remember correctly-backward, then grabbed his gun shooting the other one down. He went to shoot Antonio too, but a blade sliced through his hand. A throwing knife, Ari cursed, quickly adjusting his grip on the gun and aimed it at Antonio who had another blade about to fly through the air when-BANG!
Antonio's body slumped, falling backwards. Blood leaking out of the bullet wound in his head. Ari sat up staring at him, in disbelief before raising his gaze to Evelyn who stood at the end of the hallway her gun held tightly in her hands taking deep, sharp breaths. "He dead?" She asked, hopefully.
Ari nodded slowly.
"Good. Dead is good. Well, not for us," she swallowed thickly. "…Can we leave now?"
"Yes, we can," Ari got himself up off the ground, after securing his gun. He stared at Evelyn, and saw her hand tremble lightly. Killing came to him as easy as breathing, but it was not so for Evelyn. He walked over to her, and grasped her hands that were still tight around the gun. Her blue eyes flickered up to him, blinking hard. He rubbed his thumbs against her skin, "You got him. He's gone."
The tension seeped out her muscles and slowly she brought the gun down. She had been taught this sort of thing happened in the line of duty. Shooting someone. So she shouldn't be this freaked out. "Right, right…" She said, absently. "Can we go now?"
Ari's hand slipped to the small of her back, and he turned her leading her down the stairs. "Did you see the van?" He asked, trying to keep her mind off of it. He had seen many fall into shock after their first kill, and he believed that Evelyn would soon too.
"No…no, I didn't see a vehicle," Evelyn told him.
"Then we'll have to walk," Ari said, with a frown. He lead her outside, and darkness surrounded them. The clouds had blotched out the moon and stars.
"Which…which was do we go?" Evelyn asked.
His hand slid down to hers, and his fingers entwined with hers. "Follow me," he ordered, and tugged her along. He felt her movements were slow and sluggish, could feel her fingers tremble around his. He felt her thumb trace of a scar. He had been twelve when he received it. He was being taught how to endure torture, and his instructor without warning has slammed a knife through his hand.
Evelyn felt her heart pounding in her chest. "You don't care about pain, do you?" She found herself asking. She hadn't meant to, but she couldn't seem to help herself.
"Of course I do," Ari murmured, in reply. "I feel pain just like any other man or woman."
"You feel it. You just don't care," Evie said, with an amount of awe in her voice. "You've survived so much that pain doesn't mean anything to you anymore."
Ari paused. His brows drew together as he pondered her words before looking at her over his shoulder. Her mouth was parted with sharp, even breaths and her pale skin glisten in sweat. "Yes…I don't care about pain. It just happens, and you have to learn to endure it," Ari told her, his voice held no emotion.
Her blue eyes stared at him, wide and filled with a strange emotion that made Ari distinctly uncomfortable so he turned away. "That's…that's sad," Evelyn whispered out.
"I don't want pity," Ari told her, sharply.
"I'm not giving you pity," Evie argued. She was sad. How could anyone become so accustom to pain like he has and stay sane? Her fingers tightened around his and she let him lead her through the dark forest. Ari contemplated the woman behind him. All his life, he knew what people were and how to use them if need be…but Evelyn, wasn't like anyone he ever knew.
Hours passed by slowly, and they stepped out of the forest finally reaching its edge as a grey cloudy morning settled over them. Evelyn saw the road, and let out a deep sigh of relief. "Thank God," she fell to her knees, then she jumped back up abruptly earning a startled look from Ari. "Please," she whispered, furiously looking around in her pockets for something. "Yes!"
She held up her cellphone as if it were a prize, and turned it on quickly. The screen lit up and despite the jolt of panic that hit her when the battery bleeped at her telling her it was running low, she felt a huge relief that she could almost cry.
She had signal!
Dialing in Kate's number quickly, she pressed the phone to her ear and waited, anxiously. She saw Ari sit down on the curb, patiently and felt him watching her. Her body hummed with awareness under his stare and she felt her mouth go dry.
"Hello?" Came Kate's gargled up reply through the phone.
"Kate! Kate! It's Evelyn!" She said, over the phone hoping the woman could hear her over the bad connection. She felt tears burn in her eyes, finally seeing an end to the past couple days from hell. "Kate, listen to me, it's very important! Marine One-"
"Evelyn, where are you?" Gibbs's voice shocked her. Evelyn stood there, her mouth hanging open and she felt so much hit her at once. Relief, pain, and so many more emotions. Closing her eyes, she felt a painful lump in her throat and she couldn't get out past it. "Evelyn, are you still there? Just tell us where you are, and we'll come and get you!"
"Y-yes, boss," Evie nodded even though he couldn't see. "I'm still here. Boss…Marine One…they're planning on attacking it. You have to stop it."
"What?" Gibbs sounded surprise.
"I don't have much time. My phone is going dead. There's going to be an attack on Marine One," Evelyn repeated to him, hearing the phone bleeping in her ear about to die. "You have to stop it, Gibbs."
"We will," Gibbs promised her. "Where are you?"
"About eight miles south of Spring Valley, near the woods," Evie told him. "Hurry Gibbs. I don't know how much time-"
Beep. The phone went dead, and she pulled away from her ear. She let out a sigh, and closed her eyes tightly. Above a light thunder rumble and she felt drops of rain fall down onto her. "Great. Just wonderful. It had to start raining," Evelyn said, plopping down on the curb, leaning back against the road sign. Staring up at the billowing clouds, she felt exhausted. Thoroughly so. Not just because the past couple of days, but the last few months as well. Hearing Gibbs's voice over the phone, something inside her had shattered and she knew she couldn't keep lying. Couldn't keep playing the victim. Ari had been right. The bastard, she looked at the man who sat quietly beside her with a slight smile and shake of her head.
"You didn't tell them about me," Ari commented quietly. The soft pitter patter of the chilling rain surrounding them as a flock of bird flew into the trees for shelter.
"Nope," she said. It hadn't even occurred to her to say anything about Ari. She drew her arms around herself trying to contain the small shivers racking through her body.
"Hmmm," Ari hummed under his breath. Seconds ticked by, before Ari shrugged out of his leather jacket. "Here," he held it out to her.
"What?" She looked at him in shock.
"You are cold," he said simply. "Take it."
"But…but what about you?" She asked, a weird feeling in her chest that seemed at war with her mind making it very hard to think.
"I've had worse," Ari told her. When she stared at him, in shock, he slung the jacket over her shoulders himself. Grasping the front of it, he pulled it around her tightly so it wouldn't fall off.
The coat was still warm from Ari, and Evelyn felt herself snuggle into it. There was a crisp, musky smell that wrapped around her and she inhaled. Her blue eyes looked up and met Ari's gaze that was intensely focused on her. "Thank you…" she whispered out, softly.
"It is nothing," Ari stated, his fingers bushing along the front of the coat. "It suits you," he commented lightly, with a tiny smile.
Evelyn felt her own smile appear on her face, and she looked away feeling suddenly sheepish. Evelyn bit her lip, looking at him when wrapped her arms around herself. The pair waited for the NCIS to come and get them in silence. She never noticed that somewhere during that time, she leaned against Ari and he had looped his arm around her to help keep her warm.
She also never noticed the smile on his face.
Eli David was not a happy camper.
Not one bit.
He felt incensed, and heavily disappointed. Ari had been one of the best moles, he had flourished in training becoming lethal and there were at times that Eli feared him. But he always got the job done…and now, now it was all lost. His picture would be passed around Hamas, he would never be able to become a mole again. The only consolation was that they did not know that Ari's name truly wasn't Haswari and with Mossad burying the connection between Ari and his covers profile, hopefully they would never find out. Eli may be a bastard, but not even he would let Ari fall to Hamas retaliation.
Eli let out a deep breath, and pinched the bridge between his nose. Why…why would Ari throw all our work away? He thought to himself, though he knew the answer. Ziva had came to him shortly after he had discovered the file on Evelyn Matthews, and told him of her worries. He stared down at the woman in the photo with a great frown, trying to decipher why Ari had given up everything for her. He lips pursed, and he pressed the button on his intercom. "Hakim, please get me Ziva. Tell I have to talk to her…it concerns her brother."
"Yes, sir."
He let go of the button, and stared down at the photo for a moment longer. It did not give him answers.
Blue and red lights flashed, and Evelyn flinched as the paramedic brushed the alcohol swab against the cut on her cheek. She sent the man a glare, and the paramedic looked at her sheepishly. She rolled her eyes slightly, before looking over at Ari who stood against the NCIS van, cuffs on his hands and the agents were reading him his rights. Evie thanked the paramedic after he gave her the okay, and he asked if she wanted to go to the hospital, just in case.
A shudder ran down her spine. "No. No hospital," she shook her head. Biting her lip, she looked over at Ari. His face was cool and impassive as he regarded the agents talking to him. Then his stance shifted, and his chin raised up. His dark eyes met hers, as if he had sensed her stare and she walked over.
"So…" Evelyn spoke up as she reached his side. What did one say in these kind of situations? "This is good-bye?" She offered, with a slight smile.
"It seems that way," Ari nodded. He knew that once he gave the agencies what they wanted, he would most likely never be able to see her ever again. He reached out, but when he went to the agents tensed, hands on their guns.
"It's fine," Evelyn quickly assured them, stepping between Ari and the agents. "He's fine," she repeated.
The NCIS agents didn't look convinced, giving Ari suspicious looks before going about their business. Ari just smiled pleasantly at them, before turning his face back towards Evelyn. She smiled up at him, and went to say good-bye again, when he swept down. His lips pressed on her cheek, so dangerously close to her lips. Evelyn drew in a surprised gasp, her brows knitting together as her blue eyes fluttered closed against her will. Heat stemmed from his kiss, feeling her with a warmth that left her dizzy and confused as his fingers rubbed against her chin.
Ari let his lips linger longer than he should have, but he couldn't help himself. When she stared up at him, her blue eyes so trusting, all thoughts except the need to kiss her fled his mind and body. He closed his eyes, memorizing the sensation of her soft skin, and the way she smelled because it would be the only time he ever get to feel them. He felt Evelyn's turn, her lips gently brushing his and he pulled back. If he didn't now, he wouldn't be able to.
He watched her eyes flutter open, and her looked up at him through dazed eyes. He smiled, a genuine soft smile and his fingers caressed her jaw. "Good-bye, Evelyn," he whispered.
Evelyn stood there, the rain fluttering down upon her as she watched them load up Ari into the back of the van. The door slammed shut and she jumped, feeling a curious regret pounding her chest. She should be happy that it is all finally over. They caught the bad guys, and won…instead she was left feeling sort of empty.
"Agent Matthews," a voice behind her asked.
She turned, and then glared. "Fornell, what the hell are you doing here?" Evelyn asked, darkly.
Fornell had the nerve to smirk at her.
Gibbs hated that the Director hadn't let them go get Evelyn. Instead they took the front on Marine One, while Fornell went to Evelyn. Gibbs had raised hell over it, but the Director was stoned face telling Gibbs that his personal involvement would cloud his judgment.
"She is my agent! I need to be there, personal involvement be damned!" Gibbs had shouted. Then he quieted when he saw both shocked expression on Fornell and Morrow's faces when he declared Evelyn was his agent. Almost as if they expected him to say something else.
Gibbs stared darkly at him computer screen, every little sound raking on his nervous. He should be out there, he told himself. Evelyn was part of his team, she was his agent and it should be him out there, not her. Gibbs ran his hand over his brow, and he sighed deeply. Tony was anxiously working on his paperwork, while Kate was chatting with Abby and McGee was listening to Ducky talk an old case. All of them trying to burn away the time while fighting their nerves. It had been a hectic couple of days with Evelyn being kidnapped along with the whole terrorist plot. Gibbs sighed, looking down at his coffee and pushed it away.
Coffee wasn't helping him now. The elevator dinged, but Gibbs kept his head down. He had looked up too many times only to be disappointed at not seeing the familiar flash of red. It was only a few second later when he heard a familiar voice did he look up.
"Hey, guys."
Everyone looked and Evelyn stood there looking at all of them with a small smile. Her right cheek and lip were bruised, and she was shivering slightly, her wet hair from the rain matted to her face. She had a leather jacket draped over her shoulders, using it to keep her warm. For a second no one moved, no even breathed. Then all them started up at once. Abby was the first to reach Evelyn, pulling her into a hug while berating her for not being more careful, and saying how happy she was that she wouldn't have to find a new partner for bowling with the nuns because Evelyn was good. When Abby released her, Tony stepped up.
His eyes were tired, and so serious, and so filled with relief as he pulled her into a tight hug. "Welcome back," he whispered to her.
"I'm happy to be back," she smiled, feeling slightly choked up. She sniffled, blinking back tears as he stepped back. Her ribs protested all the hugging, but Evelyn was too glad to see them to care. The next person to step up was Ducky. "Hey, Ducky," she said, as he pulled her into a gentle hug.
"Oh, I am so happy to see you, my dear girl," Ducky said, a great smile on his face. He looked at her pointedly after catching her winces. "You did have that checked, didn't you?"
"Yes, Ducky," Evelyn told him. "They brought paramedics along. I'm a little bruised and beaten, but I'm okay."
"That's great," Kate smiled. McGee murmured that he was glad to see she was okay, and she told him thank you. She didn't realize how many people she had caring about her until they stood all surrounding her, and yet, the one she wanted to care about her the most was absent. Her eyes flickered over to Gibbs who rose from his desk, his face suspicious blank and there was a shadow in his gaze that kept her from knowing what he was thinking. She tried to keep her smile in place and smiled, giving an awkward wave. "Hey…boss," she said, nervously.
He came to a stop in front of her and she felt her pulse thump again her throat. She looked up at him, and met his gaze holding it. There were something things that Gibbs wanted to say, he wanted to yell, to tell her he was glad she was alright, but nothing came forth. Instead…WHAP!
"Ow! That hurt!" Evelyn grasped the back of her head. The pain was searing and throbbed through her entire skull. "You do know my head was slammed into a brick wall two days ago?"
"What the hell were you thinking running after him like that?" Gibbs demanded, fiercely.
"I…wasn't?" She asked, slowly. She looked around for support, but everyone was looking everywhere but at her.
"You're right you weren't," Gibbs snapped. He saw Evelyn's blue eyes stare up at him, slightly taken aback by his anger. "Did you even stop to think what could have happened to you?"
"I didn't have time to get you! If I had, Ari would have gotten away," Evie defended herself, a lump in her throat at the disappointment that was coming off Gibbs. "I had to get him, Gibbs."
"Not. At. The. Expense. Of. Your. Life." Gibbs stressed every word, and every syllable. He watched Evelyn's cheeks turn pink, embarrassed. "If you ever pull a stunt like that again-"
"You'll fire me?" Evelyn guessed, using her sarcasm to keep the pain at bay. It was her defense mechanism.
"I'll shoot you," Gibbs promised darkly.
"Oh…" Evie's eyes widened a fraction at the threat, then she let out a tiny chuckle with a small shake of her head.
"Something amusing, Matthews?" Gibbs asked, gruffly.
"Nope. Nothing, boss," Evelyn grinned, though there was a sharp edge to it and Gibbs knew that it was fake. "Just nice to know that you care, that's all."
Gibbs's lips pursed tightly, and his hand twitched. He really wanted to slap her head again, badly. But he was too relieved. He'd never be able to explain the weight that lifted off his chest when he saw her standing there, a little worse for where, but a smile still on her face. "Don't let it go to your head, Matthews," Gibbs told her, pointedly. "Caring or not, you are still in hot water."
"I kinda figured I would be," Evie stated, then she looked around at the group. It felt slightly surreal that she was standing back in the squad room with them when only hours ago she was being chased down with Ari as her only her hope. Running a hand through her hair, she grinned looking up at them. "So…what's Fornell doing here?"
Gibbs face tightened. Tony winced, and replied, "He's taking over the case."
"What? Why?" Evie asked, blinking. No one answered, but she saw a few glance over in Gibbs direction.
Abby cleared her throat. "So…where did you get the cool jacket?" Abby tried to steer the subject to safer territory. Gibbs had been incensed when the Director ordered him off that case.
"It's Ari," Evie said, without thought.
Everyone looked at each other, and Gibbs's expression tightened. "You're wearing his jacket?" He asked, darkly.
Evelyn stilled, realizing that she had just put her foot in her mouth. She knew Gibbs's hatred for Ari, and looked up at him worriedly. His expression was closed off, and he was looking down at her through narrowed eyes. "Yeah," Evelyn turned red, rubbing the back of her neck. "He…uh, he gave it to me when it started to rain."
Gibbs's eyes narrowed and his mouth opened, when a voice called out from above. "Agent Matthews," the Director stared down at the from the top of the stairs. "If you will please come with me."
Gibbs glowered at the Director as the man headed back towards his office. Evelyn felt a twinge of worry inside her chest, and looked at Gibbs. "Gibbs," she reached out, but Gibbs headed towards his desk without another word. Evelyn stared at him, her heart beating painfully in her chest and she took in a shaky breath before heading up the stairs. With each step, she felt a heaviness fill her. She had seen Gibbs's expression shutter and felt a wall suddenly between them. She knew he hated Ari, but once he learned that Ari was Mossad surely he wouldn't hold anything against her.
No…Gibbs isn't like that. She told herself, as she reached the Director's Office. However, doubt was gnawing at her stomach and she had to take a moment to draw in a breath to calm herself. Then she opened the door and stepped inside.
Minutes ticked by, and Gibbs stared up towards the Director's office. Fornell had given him an account of what happened, and he was waiting to hear it from Evelyn herself. He drummed his fingers against his desk, trying to shake the imagine out of his mind when she spoke Ari's name. There was a fondness in her eyes, and a smile on her lips. It had unsettled him deeply because Evelyn was just like Abby to him, and the thought that she felt anything for that bastard…Gibbs nearly snapped his pen in half.
He let out a sigh, dropping it on his desk. He felt old. Ancient even. He hadn't meant to get angry at Evelyn, after all she had been through the last couple of days she didn't deserve it. He rose from his desk intending on going up to the director's office when he caught to FBI agents with a very familiar guest.
Ari.
His blood boiled. He is Mossad. Fornell had told him.
Gibbs couldn't find it in him to give a damn as he stared at the man, feeling a bitter rise in his gut as he stared at Ari who walked through the squad room seemingly without a care. It had only been a hand full of months ago that he had come in here, holding people that were important to Gibbs hostage. Gibbs watched Ari's gaze turn away from the most wanted pictures, and then towards him.
The two men held each other's gazes for a long moment, then Ari smirked at him. Then walked towards the stairwell. Gibbs waited several moments, before grabbing his gun and following. The FBI agents too focus on a conversation with a couple of pretty woman from down in filing, Ari managed to lose them and head down towards autopsy.
He felt Gibbs following him, and felt a hum in his blood. He had come to the squad room to get one last look at Evelyn, but he would settle for antagonizing her father. He pushed through the autopsy doors, and stood in the dark room waiting.
Gibbs did not disappoint, shoving in right after him. As soon as he stepped through the doors, Gibbs had a feeling of déjà vu. He walked to the table, and silently unzipped the bag. However instead of seeing one of his agent's dead body, he saw the blond woman Evelyn had identified as Marta. He couldn't help feel relief that Evelyn wasn't in this bag. His spine tensed as he remembered the other person in the room and raised his gaze to meet Ari's.
"She was beautiful," Gibbs commented, staring down at the woman's pale face. She along with Bassam had been found at the farm. They found two more in a cabin nearby, and the others had fled once they realized they had been compromised. NCIS, FBI, and CIA were looking for them as Ari sold them out, in exchange for sanctuary in the USA.
"Very." Ari replied.
"Did you make love to her, and then blew her brains out?" Gibbs asked, his tone conversational. But his eyes were hard and cold as ice.
"She would have done the same to me," Ari shrugged, indifferently. He hadn't taken Marta to bed, despite Marta's very willing behavior, but there seemed to be only one woman his body responded to. He however didn't feel the need to correct the man. Gibbs's opinion of him mattered little to Ari.
"Why do you do this?" Gibbs asked, his eyes trying to decipher what kind of man Ari was. His superiors believed him to be a good man having to get his hands dirty. Gibbs believed he was a bastard doing what was good for himself, others be damned.
"Same reason you do," Ari shrugged, indifferently.
"I don't think so," Gibbs shook his head.
"Then you are lying to yourself," Ari stated, simply.
"What now? You go back to the Middle East. You tell them Marta was Mossad, and she blew the op," Gibbs guessed.
"Unfortunately no," Ari stated, having to hide his smile. His father had been most upset, and things had gotten ugly especially when Ari mentioned he wouldn't be coming back to Tel Aviv. He knew Eli wouldn't give up easily, but now Ari had a way to fight back.
"Then what are you going to do?" Gibbs demanded.
Unable to resist, he smirked. "Perhaps, I'll get Evelyn in bed again. Without the worry of Hamas lingering over our heads, we would have more time to enjoy each other then rushing things," Ari told Gibbs, watching as a vein popped out the side of the man's head.
Gibbs didn't want to put any faith in Ari's words, but his mind flashed back to Ari's jacket that Evelyn held tightly around her. His stomach twisted violently and he felt sick. "You bastard," Gibbs grounded out.
"Is your pride hurt that…Evelyn trusts me more in the matter of two days, and after everything I've done, than she trust you after working with you for the last several months?" Ari taunted, with a cruel grin.
"Pride isn't exactly what I'm worried about right now," Gibbs snarled.
"Anger? Betrayal? I'm sure you are feelings those right now," Ari got out before a loud pop echoed through autopsy and he felt pain exploded through his shoulder. A surprised laughter ripped through him as he stared up at Gibbs who stood over him. "Defending your girl's honor, hmm?"
Gibbs shot him a glare before stalking out of autopsy. He hoped the bastard would bleed out.
Despite the Director congratulating her on helping stopping an attack on the President (though all she did was use a phone) while also subtlety scolded her as well. She sat there in a daze, not really hearing it. She was too worried about Gibbs's reaction to everything knowing that Fornell would inform him. Those two had a strange friendship. After much questioning, the Director finally let Evelyn go home. Abby and Tony kept asking her if she wanted someone to go with her, but she tiredly declined. Kate smiled understandingly, while Ducky said for her to call him if she needed anything.
She looked over at her father, her heart heavy. She wanted him to say something. Anything. But he silently worked on his paperwork, and Evelyn blinked hard. "Good-bye, Gibbs," she said softly.
Gibbs's gaze paused on her, and his blue eyes were blank and she could feel the wall between him and her. He didn't want to believe Ari, but he couldn't bring himself to ask Evelyn about it. Evelyn felt her lips twist downwards slightly when he grumbled out a short good-bye. Evelyn knew that he was just upset. He'll come around…eventually, she thought with a worry wrinkle in her brow and her jaw trembled slightly. "I'm sorry…if that's worth anything," she told him, quietly. "If I could go back two days ago I would have done things differently…I just…" I just wanted to make you proud, she thought the words, but didn't say them.
Gibbs sat there froze, his blue eyes intently focused on his paperwork before he finally looked back up at her. "Rule number 6. Never say you're sorry," he said to her, his voice holding a mechanical quality to it. He studied her, his gaze deep and probing as if he were trying to reach in her eyes and pull everything out for everyone to see. Suddenly it felt like none of the past months had happened, like she was stranger, a probie he didn't know or trust.
"Gibbs," Evelyn hated the quiver in her voice.
"Go home, Matthews. Get some rest," he finally ordered, firmly.
The 'We'll talk later' was left unsaid, but Evelyn caught the undertones of his words. She felt a stab of regret. Later…always later. She always told herself that she would tell him the truth later. And later became later and later, and she just shook her head lightly. That didn't matter right now, if there was ever a time to not tell him, it wasn't when he was pissed at her.
"Alright," she agreed. Reaching out, she grabbed the jacket she had tossed on her desk, and slung it over her shoulders. She froze realizing she what she had did, and noticed Gibbs twitch ever so slightly.
Straightening Ari's jacket she didn't bring attention to it, she slung her scarf around her throat and marched to the elevator. As the elevator made it's way down to the parking lot, Evelyn finally let herself relax. It felt so good to be able to go home. She couldn't wait to get in her bed, and snuggle underneath her blankets. Stepping off the elevator, she pulled her keys out of her purse and headed towards her car when, while flipping through the keys. When she found the right one, she raised her gaze to pick out her vehicle and she stopped short.
There on the ground between her and her car, was a lump. It wasn't just any lump. It was a body!
Her pulse jumped in throat, and she looked around cautiously trying to see anyone else around. Letting out a deep breath, she took slow steps towards the person who was lying face down beside her car. Her breaths sounded echoed through the parking lot and she swallowed thickly when she reached the body. Bending her knees slightly, her hand reached out and she flipped the man over. Her eyes widened, and she fell down to her knees. Her hand reaching out cupping the man's face, and she gasped out, "Oh, my god! Ari?"
