I LOVED WRITING THIS CHAPTER! I don't know why, but I did. The only bad thing is my laptop is acting like a piece of junk and my wifi isn't working so I've been having to play computer tag (all possible by a flash drive) and jump to my main home put to upload this chapter. Hope you all enjoy!
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
"Holding Up the Sky"
"Oh…"
"Oh? 'Oh' is all that you have to say?" Demanded Audrey Webster, angrily. Audrey was far from a happy woman. There was a saying 'Hell Hath No Fury Like An Audrey Scorn', and Evelyn stood there froze in absolute fear as her grandmother stood on her doorstep looking ready to spit fire out of her red painted lips as she stood to her full height and glared up at Evelyn with the meanest look Evie had ever seen. Her eyes drilled into Evelyn and her hand were clutching her person so tightly her knuckles were white.
"Nana," Evelyn began, looking guilty as hell. Oh, boy an angry Audrey was not a good thing, but the cool aloof Audrey was even more scarier. Even more scarier than Gibbs, and that was saying something. She swallowed the lump in her throat, and she tried to smile. "It's so good to see you."
"Are you going to invite me in?" Audrey asked coolly, then brushed past Evelyn. Evie stood there for a moment, staring dumbly out her front door when reality came crashing down on her as well as fear. She had forgotten about Ari! She turned on her heel and bolted after Audrey, racing down the hallway. Several horrible possibilities went through her mind, while panic coiled in her throat as the memory of Ari's hands around her throat.
She came around the corner to the living. "Nana, wait…" Her protest died on her lips and she found herself speechless once more. Her living room was empty, no Ari, none of his clothes. The only indication of him being there was the blanket lying on the couch. It was almost like it had been a dream, or nightmare depending on how you looked at it. "What…what Nana?" Evelyn looked up at the older woman dazed at the sound of her name.
"What did you want me to wait for?" Audrey looked at her granddaughter with a frown on her face.
Evelyn's eyes widened a hair and she reached up, fiddling with her hair. "I…uh, I wanted to know if you want any tea?" Evie asked, her voice very light as she looked around. Half of her expected Ari to popped out from somewhere.
"Tea would be lovely," Audrey commented, but her frosty disposition didn't thaw in the slightest.
"Well, um," Evelyn gaze swept across the room one last time for Ari before backing out of the room slowly and headed down towards the kitchen. Where the hell is Ari at? She thought a split second before a hand reached out and pulled her roughly into the bathroom. The door slammed shut behind her and she whirled around to see Ari leaning over the sink, his face pale.
"Ari," she placed a hand on her chest, "what the hell is your problem?"
He didn't reply. Instead he leaned down, pressing his flushed face against the cool marble. It felt good. He felt Evelyn take a step towards him, and could feel the worry radiate off of her. "You didn't take the pain killers, did you?" She accused, her hands reached out pressing against his forehead. He was running a fever, his skin was flush and hot to the touch.
"Leave me be, woman," Ari urged her. Medicine effected the mind, and it was key that an operative such as himself keep a clear mind. He had dealt with sickness before without medicine. He would do it again.
He heard her give a growl of frustration, and it reminded him of a tiny bird, puffing out it's chest after having it's feathers ruffled. He almost laughed again. "You pulled me in here, man," she said, poking his side hard. He tensed, taking a deep breath smashing his natural instinct to lash out at her. "You know I didn't pull off the ground and bring you here for you die in my bathroom."
"Why?" He gritted out.
She blinked hard. "What?" She asked.
"Why did you bring me here?" He asked, his chest heaving up down with his labored breaths.
Evelyn stared at him, unable to give him an answer because she didn't have one. Her tongue darted out and licked her lips that felt suddenly dry. "I don't..." She shook her head, and she found herself gently stroking his forehead. She hated how Ari threw her off kilter, and somehow had this hold over her. Every time she was near him, she felt herself drowning in his presence and felt as if it was consuming making her disappear. "I don't know," she said, softly.
Ari reached up, taking her hand off his face and ran his thumb against the center of her palm. That small action shouldn't be so erotic, but it made Evelyn suck in a sharp breath, a throb pulsing through her body and she felt herself leaning towards him as if pulled by some invisible force. "You don't know, hmm?" Ari asked, his voice drawing her sharply back into reality.
With a thick gulp, she managed to free her hand from his and pull back. "Stupidity would be my guess," she tried to be sarcastic, but her voice quivered belying how badly he affected her. He gave her a lazy sort of smile that shifted into a grimace as pain throbbed through his skull. She felt her lips dip down in worry, but there was little she could do except give him medicine to keep the fever down. She looked at him, then at the doorway knowing she could put off Audrey much longer. "Do you think you can make it to the bedroom? It's at the end of the hall," she said, reaching out placing her hand on his shoulder blade.
"You going to take me to bed, Evie?" Ari asked, dryly. Her touch was so soft, so innocent and yet it set him aflame. He was almost tempted to accuse her of doing on purpose, but he saw the genuine worry on her face.
"Can you?" Evelyn ignored his attempt at baiting. Her hand unconsciously moving soothingly along his shoulder blade. He looked terrible, and she wished he had let her take him to a hospital.
"Yes," Ari replied on a sigh.
"Go to it." It was hard to pull her hand free, and she ripped the mirror cabinet open and pulled out some medicine. She shoved the bottle into Ari's hands and she said, "After you take some medicine. Please."
Ari reluctantly accepted the bottle. "Are you going to be able to handle your grandmother?" He asked, quietly.
"Yes," Evelyn said. Then uncertainty clouded her features, and she added, "Well, I hope so."
Evelyn dawdled as long as she could, putting more effort in pouring the two cups of tea than necessary. She needed a minute to sort herself, last night hadn't given her the time. Her eyes flickered towards the hallway and she could only hope that Ari stay out of sight, she already had enough on her plate. Her eyes landed on her grandmother and she felt regret feel her heart. The two of them hadn't talk much recently, and when they did somehow they usually fought about her job. Admittedly, these fight happened after the times that Evelyn was injured, so Evie could understand where Audrey was coming from. It still didn't make the fights any easier. The last time they had spoken was right after Evelyn had gotten shot, and told Audrey that she wasn't quitting. The disappointment in Audrey's eyes had almost been too much.
Evie rubbed at the headache forming in her temples then picked up the glasses and moved to join her nana. Why couldn't the universe just give her a break? Why did it keep swinging at her? She sat down in front of Audrey, and handed her the cup while Audrey seemed to be surveying the room with a keen eye before finally looking at Evelyn. "You look tired Evelyn, have you been sleeping okay?" Audrey asked, taking the glass that Evie offered.
She had slept good, but it was amazing how quickly a good night sleep could go down the drain when one was put in a distressing situation that they couldn't escape. With a sigh, she shrugged. "Been better, been worse," Evelyn stated.
Audrey's brows knitted and her lips dipped downward. She sipped the tea before setting the glass down and stared hard at Evelyn. "Evelyn, you can't keep doing this," she began.
"Please, not this again," Evelyn said, with a sigh.
"You, young lady, have put me through hours and hours of stress and worry. Did you even stop to think about how I felt when you went missing? How worried I was?" Audrey tore into Evelyn without mercy and Evie looked down at her clasped hands, awkwardly. "It wasn't a good feeling and you are going to sit here and listen to what I say, you understand?"
"Yes, nana," Evie stated. She had never seen Audrey look so mad, or so upset before in her life.
"You can't play with your future like this, Evelyn," Audrey sank back into the seat, her expression softening slightly. "I know you want to know your father. I want you to know your father. I just…I just don't understand why you can't do that without working this job. Why play this game?"
"It isn't a game," Evie shook her head. "It's not a game to me. I want to earn his trust, I want to be good enough-" Evelyn broke off abruptly and gritted her teeth, when words escaped her and she had no way to explain how she felt. "I came into this just wanting a desk job, just so I could be around him and get to know him before I dump the fact that I'm alive on top of him."
Evelyn continued on after shoving her glass of tea away, it no longer appealing, "But…Morrow offered me the job, to work along side of my father and yes, it started out just me wanting to get to know him again."
"And now?" Audrey prompted quietly.
"Now it's become so much more than just that," Evelyn stated. "I feel like I'm a part of something great. That I get to do good things, and help people. The team…they're my family, just like you are. Abby and Kate are like the sisters I never had. Tony is my best friend and like my brother. Ducky is my confidant and like a grandfather who will always keep my secrets no matter what. And Gibbs…" Evie pinched the bridge of her nose. "Well, Gibbs is complicated. But you already knew that," Evie tossed her a humorless smile.
"I did," Audrey nodded. "But I can tell he cares for you."
Evelyn rose an eyebrow. "How?"
"I called and…well, I wasn't very ladylike when I spoke to him. This was when you were kidnapped, honey child," Audrey told her quickly when she saw alarm flash across Evelyn's face. "You have no idea how hard that was for me, Evie. I was so worried. All I could do was sit there, and just imagine what happened to you. It was horrible," Audrey said, her composure faltering as tears welled up in her eyes. "After…after the second day, I thought there was no hope and I tore into Gibbs. I blamed him for all of it. And seeing you," Audrey's eyes flickered to the bruises on Evie's neck, "with all these bruises…"
Evelyn's hand reached up to touch her neck, and flinched at the reminder of last night. She closed her eyes, and swallowed thickly. Opening her eyes, she reached out touching Audrey's hand. "I'm sorry…I'm so sorry," Evie whispered out. "I never meant for you to worry, or be upset and if I could somehow change that I would. You know, I would, but I…I just can't give up my job at NCIS."
Audrey closed her eyes solemnly and wiped away the tears. "I know you can't," she stated, her voice shaky. "I just hope you don't live to regret that. I don't want anything to happen to you Evelyn. Do you have any idea how important to me you are? I don't know what I would do if I lost you. Who would I spend my holidays with? Or call when I hear a stupid joke that makes me laugh? Or to tell me when your lawn man comes over to cut the grass so I can come and watch him?"
"I don't know what I would do if I lost you either," Evie whispered. "I can't promise that I will leave NCIS, because you know I won't. I can promise to be wiser and try to stay safer."
Audrey heaved a deep sigh, and nodded accepting it before straightening her spine, retrieving her compact mirror out of her purse. Making sure that a hair wasn't out of place, she stated, "Good. Now that is settled, invite your cat in here to talk."
"W-what? Cats don't talk," Evelyn stuttered out, surprised.
"Honey child," Audrey looked at her pointedly. "The only thing that could you possibly all flustered up like this is a man and he must be something for you to trust him in your home."
"I…I…" Evelyn felt her mind break. It was impossible to process anything because all she could do was stare at Audrey in shock. "Alright," she gave her best smile, hoping that Audrey didn't see the desperation in her eyes. "You…you caught me. I-I have friend over last night. I needed the company, and he's sick so he needed someone to take care of him. I figured it was a win-win situation."
"Sick?" Audrey frowned.
"I thinks it's the flu," Evie brushed off like it was nothing, while deep inside her was thundering in her chest. "He's in the bedroom asleep."
"In your bedroom?" Shock flashed through Audrey's eyes.
"Yes," Evelyn blushed. She felt a horrible guilt gnaw at her insides at the lie, but she had no choice. She couldn't exactly tell Audrey that she let the man who kidnapped her stay the night and saved his life. Audrey would beat Evie over the head, have her committed and go running to Gibbs to help her clean up after killing Ari herself. The mental image of Ari getting beat up by Audrey almost made her laugh. Almost.
"He must be quite the man to earn your trust so," Audrey commented, quietly.
"Yeah…I guess he is." Although that wasn't the description she would use to describe Ari. She really wasn't sure how to the describe Ari. He was an enigma who honestly knew too much about her, and she couldn't help, but to wonder how he figured that Gibbs was her father. She had been far too exhausted to hash that out last night, but it was still buzzing inside her mind like an angry bee. "Hmmm?" She asked when her grandmother asked a question.
"What's his name?" Audrey commented.
"His name? Oh, it's…Reese," she said, with a bright smile. "Reese James."
"Reese James, hmm?" Audrey asked. "He treating you good?"
"Nana," Evelyn got an exasperated fond smile on her face.
"Well?" Audrey asked, arms crossed.
"Yes…he is." And that is a lie if I ever told one.
Abby was finishing up label and cataloging all the evidence from Evelyn's kidnapping while also thinking of baking her some cookies. Evelyn seemed really upset when she left, and maybe some cookies would cheer her up while making Abby worry less. She tried pulling up the DNA results so she could add them to the file, it was a bit pointless now since Evelyn was safe, but she still had to get it.
File not available.
"What?" She stared at her computer screen. She knew she had gotten those results back, she just hadn't had a chance to check them yet with Evelyn's whole big arrival. She clicked a few more keys and still couldn't get access to the file. "Well, isn't that hinky?" Abby glared at the computer screen.
"What's hinky, Abby?" Gibbs asked.
Abby turned, and glared slightly. "You mister, are in trouble," she whirled around, placing her hands on her hips.
"Oh?"
"Yes. How could you treat Evelyn that way?" Abby demanded. "I mean, yeah, she did something stupid and you had a right to headslap her a few times, but you were mean, Gibbs. I have never seen you be that mean."
Gibbs had never felt the need to be mean like that before either. But he had felt anger, relief, and some many other things when Evelyn stepped out into the squad room. If something had happened to her, Gibbs didn't know what he would have done. He had seen agents die before, but something about Evelyn made the very idea infinitely worse though no one would ever hear him say that out loud. He regretted the way he had iced her out after letting Ari's words get to him. He could see the hurt on her face, and he felt like a bastard. Gibbs knew he was going to have to talk to her, find some way to clear the air and repair the damage that had been done. He sighed deeply, "Abby…"
"I know. You went all papa bear," Abby sighed. "You just need to work on your growl, not the bite."
His lips quirked upward. "I'll keep that in mind. Now…what was hinky?" He asked, needing a distraction.
"Well…" Abby turned towards the computer. "It might not be nothing. I mean, I could have lost it while having to catalog the old cases. The Director wants us to update old case files from the 80s up, do you how hard it is to do that?" Abby rolled her eyes slightly. "Anyways…the DNA test we had to run on the blood on the wall, before we knew it was Evie's, it's gone."
"Gone?" Gibbs asked, with a deep frown.
"Yeah," Abby nodded. "I need to find to finish up my report. I guess, I can get another sample," Abby headed towards her desk where all the evidence was sitting and after a minute, the goth was not happy. "What the hell?"
"Abby," Gibbs shot her a surprised look.
"It's gone too!" Abby exclaimed loudly. "The sample the team recovered from the scene! It's gone!" Abby's eyes narrowed viciously as she scanned her lab, darkly. "Someone has been in my lab!"
Gibbs's eyes narrowed. Who would want to take Evelyn's DNA evidence? He had a sneaky suspicion that a certain FBI agent was behind this. "Abby, get me McGee," he barked out an order. He was going to get down to the bottom of this. It would distract him from the mess that he had made with Evelyn.
Audrey left an hour later, more than a little disappointed that she didn't get to meet Evelyn's 'cat', but Evie stood firm against it. Evelyn shut the door and let out a long breath. Her muscles were tight and tense, she had to lie through her teeth to her grandmother for half their conversation. Audrey was way to interest in 'Reese James', but Evie supposed that's because Evelyn had never brought anyone to her home in a romantic kind of way. She let her head bang against the door, and closed her eyes releasing a groan.
What was she playing at? Bringing Ari here was so stupid. She could hear Gibbs accuse her of not thinking again. She pressed her fingertips to her temples. She really didn't have an ounce of self-preservation, for all her paranoid habits. She acted without thought, letting her emotions guide her. And in doing so she brought in a man who had an arsenal of weapons, she had discovered that when she had taken his clothes off. Also, he had reflexes that were designed to kill that even the most normal and innocent of touches set off.
She shuddered, rubbing her throat.
"Fear has a scent to it."
Her heart leapt in her chest. Her eyes snapped open and she saw a disheveled Ari standing before her. Sweat rolled down his forehead and Evelyn felt a bit relief rush through her. His fever had broke. "You are quite mistaken, if you think I'm afraid of you," she barked out. "I was just wondering what exactly I got myself into."
"Regret bringing me into your home?" Ari taunted, but the bite behind it was gone.
Evelyn wisely did not comment. "You must be hungry," she said, heading towards the kitchen.
"Going to cook something for me, Evelyn?" Ari purred, trailing after her. He grimaced, placing his hand to his aching shoulder. "How domestic."
"Keep talking like that and the only I'll feed you is a kitchen knife," she bit out angrily. As always when she turned on the tap, the water pouring out appeared to be a silvery stream of shimmering beauty. She always loved the water, remembering when she was little and the beach.
"Evelyn, are you okay?" Ari's voice was soft, and came from right her behind her. There he was again, startling her. When she was so sure he was just an arrogate bastard, he went asking her if she was alright when he was clearly not alright. His hands rested on each side of her hips, his thumbs brushing soothingly on her skin and she found he was right about his assumption last night. She didn't mind his touch, not as much as she should. Instead, she found herself instinctively leaning into it and him. Her back leaned against his chest, and for a moment, she found herself just wanting to be held. "Evelyn?" A dark timber stirred in Ari's voice that made her entire body prickle with awareness and her breath to catch deep in her throat.
He brushed reached up, brushing the hair that obscured her slender neck from his view. He closed his eyes, burying his nose against it when he saw the purple whelped in the shape of a hand print. "I'm sorry..." Ari's whisper was muffled against her neck.
"It was just a reflex," Evie found herself whispering.
You have a too forgiving heart, dear one, he thought silently. "Are you okay?" He repeated the question.
"I don't know. I really don't know," she said, her voice not sounding like her. "You should get back in bed. I'll bring you something to eat…" She whirled around when the sound tires driving up her driveway. "What the…? Did Nana forget something?"
There was a knock at the door and Evelyn immediately dismissed the thought. If Audrey had forgotten something she would have just blown in like a hurricane with really no warning. She didn't need to knock. Evelyn went to head out, when Ari's hand got her by the wrist. Ari's eyes narrowed and he pulled out one of her hidden glocks underneath the table as if he had known it was there all along. "How the hell?" Evelyn gaped. "How did you know that was there?"
"I'm good," Ari stated, smugly. "Go. I'll cover you."
"Haven't went over this before?" Evie shot him a glare.
Ari gave her a look that said he wasn't going to back down this time. "I'll cover you," he said, firmly. He would not budge on this. He saw the vehicle through the small gap that the large cabinet did not cover. It was a black unmarked van, and that meant that it was someone that did not want to be recognized. It made him all the more wary.
Evie gave him one last stubborn glance before marching towards the front door. She pulled the door open, and saw the last person she was expecting. Kate, maybe. Abby and Tony, were her next options. Hell, even Gibbs was on her list. Fornell however was not.
"Fornell, what the hell?" Evelyn gasped out in shock.
Ari immediately came out his hiding spot, while cursing himself. He knew Fornell was here for him, and he placed himself between Evelyn and Fornell, eyeing the FBI warily.
"Interesting company you keep, Agent Matthews," Fornell pushed past Ari and into her house without invitation. Evelyn flinched, the hair on the back of her neck raising and she felt every fiber of her being screeching to toss Fornell on his ass, but the several FBI agents standing outside gave her pause.
Ari shut the door, and faced Fornell, his arms crossed over his chest as he fought the pain racking through his body. He made sure that he put himself between Evelyn and Fornell, his hand on his firearm. Fornell caught the motion and smirked, "I would advise against that, if I were you."
"What are you doing here, Fornell?" Evelyn asked.
"Ari still has to hold up his end of his bargain with us. Besides, I heard the coffee was great," Fornell shrugged, heading off to her kitchen as if he knew which way it was. The it hit her, he did know which way it was. They had scouted out her house, but why? In angry stomps, she walked around Ari who made a noise of frustration in the back of his throat and found Fornell messing with her coffee maker.
"Oh?" Evelyn tried to be nonchalant, but her insides were twisting nervously. "And who did you hear that from? And why do I have a feeling that you being here for Ari isn't all as simple as it sounds?" She narrowed her eyes at him.
"Gibbs," Fornell explained, hitting the button. The coffee pot hissed and he turned to Evelyn. "So where do you keep your cups?"
"I believe Evelyn asked you a question," the timber in Ari's voice lowered and he watched the agent through narrowed eyes.
"And she'll get her answer," Fornell replied, not in the least bit intimidated which was actually quite refreshing for Ari. Most feared him. "After I get my coffee. It's two in the morning, and I'm too old to have to run around after an NCIS agent who get their asses into some fubared situations. No offense meant," he chuckled when Evelyn looked at him offended.
"Offense still taken," Evelyn shot back at him.
"Relax, Agent Matthews," Fornell shot her a smile. "We have no intention of telling your boss about your little visitor, though why someone wants to harbor their kidnapper is beyond me. Though you are right. Ari is only part of why we are here. After all we did have a deal with him. You still want that deal, don't you?"
"More than anything," Ari said, holding Fornell's steady gaze.
"Good because I have a deal that I think will be beneficial for all." Then he got an uncertain look on his face, and looked at Evelyn. "Well, maybe not so much for you."
"And that's supposed to mean?" Evelyn intoned, placing her hands on her hips watching Fornell find the cabinet with the cups and stealing on. He poured the coffee and took a big drink before turning back around.
"Ahh," Fornell sighed, happily. "Gibbs was right. That's good stuff. What kind do you use?" He asked.
"Special homemade blend," Evelyn stated, darkly. "You've had your coffee, I want my answer."
"Alright, alright," Fornell relented. "Geesh. You're like you're old man, stubborn as a mule. Gibbs taught you well."
If Ari hadn't caught her, Evelyn would have hit the floor.
THE END OF THE CHAPTER!
Okay, admittedly, Ari didn't have his revelation yet. That will happen next chapter. NEXT CHAPTER: Ari realizes something, Evelyn gets way in over her head, and has a long conversation with Gibbs.
THANK YOU ALL! Rrs are appreciated.
