The Reporter
She was a reporter…nosy, bossy; ready to do whatever needed to uncover the truth…she was so much like the Sarah-Jane Rose knew, but oh so different.
She was younger for starters, and she'd never meant the Doctor of course, but she was just as clever as always...that was the problem.
She had just shown up one day on the Tyler's doorstep, asking if she could talk to Rose for a moment, Rose had agreed.
Letting her into the sitting room, they made some tea and began listening to her talk.
…And talk she did.
In a flurry of papers, photos and notes Sarah-Jane began to explain desperately that this James Smith person they were housing was not the man he said he was. She began to show how this man had not been around for more than a few months, except for a brief sighting a couple years earlier…right before and during the Cybermen invasion.
Quietly, quickly, Sarah-Jane began to explain how she thought that this man whoever he really was had something to do with the invasion, that he was dangerous.
Rose stared in shocked horror and amazement, before she laughed.
She laughed and laughed and laughed, right up until Sarah-Jane threatened to go to the news with her findings…Rose's mouth snapped shut and her eyes hardened.
"You can't do that," she said quietly, her voice threatening. "I won't let you."
"And why ever not?" Sarah-Jane asked her shoulders straight and her eyes determined. "This man, whoever he is, is dangerous. You can see it in his eyes. The world needs to know that this man is not who he says he is."
"Why? He hasn't done anything yet!" Rose is yelling now.
"Maybe not, but Ms. Tyler no man builds himself a fake identity if they are good men. They is simply no reason."
Rose is bristling now, "He is a good man." She insists, Sarah-Jane doesn't look convinced.
"How well do you know him Rose? I mean really know him? You've only known him a few months how could you—"
"Years."
"Excuse me?"
"I've known him for years." She's already said it and there's no going back now. "And he is a good man and nothing you say will make me believe differently."
Sarah-Jane's eyes harden, "and aren't you another mystery Rose Tyler. The daughter of Jackie and Pete Tyler, DNA tests a'okay it and everything, and yet you've never been seen before."
"I got lost from my parents when I was younger," Rose explains, desperately trying to remember her back-story. "As stupid as it sounds a zeppelin went down and they couldn't find me…everyone assumed I was dead up until a few months ago when I showed up."
Sarah-Jane nodded and hummed, "you want to know what I think Ms. Tyler. I think that you and Mr. Smith aren't human. I believe that you come from elsewhere imprinting yourselves into our lives, fooling everyone into believing you belong."
Rose stared, "I'm human." She insists and this catches the reporter's attention.
"Ahh, so you are human…but what of Mr. Smith? You said nothing of him." This woman is so close to the truth, too close.
Rose cursed and opened her mouth to respond when, "Time Lord."
Rose jumps and turns to see the Doctor standing in the doorway, his eyes hard.
"I'm part Time Lord," he continues, staring at Sarah-Jane and as he does his eyes soften. "And you Sarah-Jane Smith, oh you are brilliant."
"Just Ms. Smith," Sarah says harshly as she stands, eyeing the Doctor. "What are Time Lords Mr. Smith? I do not enjoy being made a fool of."
"Oh of course not, Ms. Smith," he smiles cheekily. "But I'm afraid that the whole story may take some time to explain."
Sarah-Jane said nothing and so the Doctor surged forward.
"I guess I should start off by saying the reason I've only been seen for a few months is because I really have only existed for a few months."
Sarah's eyebrows went up, but the Doctor didn't stop.
"See Rose and I are from another dimension, in that dimension there's another me…well I say another me, it's more like I've got a brother. We-ell I say a brother, but it's probably more like he's my dad…no not my dad, that's weird. Because that'd mean that Donna was my mum and oh she would hate that. I mean you didn't know Donna, but I did and—"
"Mr. Smith," Sarah-Jane spoke harshly and the Doctor looked up.
"Right, sorry, moving on, in this other dimension Rose and I, well other me, used to go on adventures, until one day she got sucked into this dimension with her Mum. That'd be Jackie Tyler."
"Mrs. Tyler has been alive and well on this planet—"
"Dimension."
"—for quite some time now Mr. Smith, if you mean to tell me that—"
"Oh no, Jackie Tyler of this world died," he frowned at this. "We couldn't get to her in time…" He trailed off and his eyes go distant for a second before he jumps back into his story. "But that's not important, we're talking about me. So you see jump forward a bit and there's this woman named Donna, and oh she was brilliant. Anyways there was a wibbly-wobbly meta-crisis, because she touched my severed hand and bing, bang, boom here I am! Well…I mean the other me dropped me off here with Rose first, and there was this whole do I stay or do I go kinda thing, but that's not important."
Sarah-Jane blinked, once, twice, and then, "Are you serious?"
"Oh yes, completely serious, I'm always serious me."
"You mean to tell me that you come from another dimension on top of being an alien."
"Part-alien, but yes, pretty much."
"And you're just here, because you love Rose Tyler."
Rose tensed and looked at the Doctor, her heart fluttering as his smile grew wider.
"Oh yes."
"Right," Sarah-Jane stared for another moment, before standing. "Well then Mr. Smith, seeing as how you aren't here to cause harm, as I previously thought, I will be on my way."
"Just like that?" Rose asked, surprised. "You're not even going to ask for proof."
"Ms. Tyler, anyone who tells a story that outrageous and with complete seriousness, is telling the truth. Besides how would I go to the press with this?"
Rose sagged in relief, "thank you."
"Mind you," the journalist continued, her eyes sparkling. "I may have to come back and hear about a few of those adventures."
"Oh I wouldn't miss that for the world," the Doctor replied. "In the mean time you just be brilliant."
Sarah-Jane laughed and bidding her farewell to the duo, she took her leave.
"That was close," Rose told the Doctor once she'd left.
"Oh, but that was Sarah-Jane, let's face it she never would've done anything without the full story."
Rose arched an eyebrow.
"…okay well maybe she would've, but alls well that ends well."
The Doctor turned looking out the window, watching the woman get into her car and drive off.
Then commented thoughtfully, "do you think she could use a tin dog as well? I mean this dimension is a bit advanced and I'm sure that I could put together a parallel K9, to go with our Ms. Smith. Do you think she'd like that? Because I'd think she'd love it."
Rose just laughed.
Look I'm alive!
Anyways here's an alternate Sarah-Jane for you guys :D
I like to think of this Sarah-Jane as younger than her other counterpart, because in my head that makes sense
I also think that if someone could discover that "Harold Saxon" was false than someone could also discover that "James Smith" was false.
Anyways I'm sorry I've been neglecting this story, I blame the lack of inspiration, so a big thank you to whoever is still around to read this
