Disclaimer: I own nothing. Not Gibbs, not Ari, no one do I own. This is all for amusement. There I said it, now can someone have Ari put the gun down slowly…

RidingAngelxspy:

Yes, I just totally did that. When I started the story, I really was going to leave all that in the past, and not bring it up but somehow it just became part of the storyline. Good luck with your writing, and I hope that maybe I will get to see it soon. The name 'Kelly' will get to come into play soon, Gibbs just assumes that Evelyn prefers being called Evelyn seeing how she has been called that most of her life. Yeah…I've turned Jenny into a not so likely character. Not that she will be out of character, but the choices she will make will not endear her exactly. Ziva is a secondary character, and so she is easily forgettable…at least, until now. She will become more prominent in the next few chapters.

What attracts me to the show NCIS? I would say the people, specially Gibbs, and the bonds between all of them and how they evolve through happiness and grief. Also the storylines are quite unique, and appealing when there are so many cop shows on right now.

Do or die. :D

PS. I will look into it.

PSS. A Day To Be Alone by One Less Reason.

PSSS. Well, I really like your reviews so feel free to write long reviews anytime because they make my day. :D

*BIG HUGS*

If I haven't responded to your review, I apologize. Been super busy, and I've been contemplating getting a new dog though I probably should wait. Went to a shelter, and I just wanted to take them all home with me. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy. :D

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

'And Down We Go'

Evelyn parked the car, and sat there for a moment, with her hands on the steering wheel while staring out at the windshield at her home. Her pulse was a steady thump in her throat, and she let out a long breath. She couldn't believe that after all this time, the truth was finally out there and she had her father back. She felt a lightness in her chest that she could never remember feeling before, and she let a smile cross her feature before she went to get out of the car and froze. Her gaze was fixated on a green car, one that she was very familiar with and horror jolted down her spine spurning her out of the car and up to her front door faster than she had ever moved in her entire life.

She pulled the door open, her heart beating in her heart like a racing horse's hooves. She rushed down the hallway, and came around the corner into the living room with a wild eyed expression on her face. As she pulled to a stop, it took a moment to process the scene laid before her. Her nana sitting primly in a chair with a cup of tea in hand, and a slightly tight expression on her face as if she was not particularly pleased. Then Evelyn's eyes drifted to Ari who sat on the couch, his posture feigned relax, but there was a clench of his jaw that said otherwise. Her heart jolted at the sight of him. Tall. Masculine. The scruff of a beard that now hide his stubborn jaw, and his deep dark eyes, almost pitched black looked straight at her as if she were his anchor in the torrent sea. She gave him a pitying smile, knowing that Audrey wasn't easy to handle.

"Nana, I didn't expect you," she said, with a careful politeness. Her heart was pounding inside her chest, and she feared it would beat right out.

"I wanted to surprise you, but I'm afraid I surprised your…boyfriend instead," Audrey stated, blandly. She sat upright as if her spine were a steel rod, and her movement were tight and sharp obviously uncomfortable.

Ari stood, like a gentlemen, as she entered the room and made her way towards him as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Evelyn smiled, slightly. "You don't have to stand," she said, softly. "It isn't necessary."

"It is, however, courteous," he said, with a slight incline of his head. His dark eyes softened when they fell upon her, and she saw him visible relax.

"So…I see you've found yourself a gentlemen, Evelyn," Audrey smiled, thinly.

Evelyn jolted, and turned towards her grandmother. "Ah…yes, yes, I did," she smiled, the uncertainty returning tenfold. "He's been…wonderful to me."

"Hmph. You have to understand my surprise," said Audrey, plainly. "Evelyn is not so good with picking up men."

Evelyn sent Audrey most ferocious frown. "I certainly am capable of picking up men," she stated, firmly.

"Oh, you are, are you?" Ari arched a brow.

"Don't you start," Evie said, warningly.

Ari smirked, in reply. He winced slightly as he moved his shoulders into a more relaxed posture, and it was difficult to keep remembering that Ari was wounded. He looked too strong to be ill or weak. Audrey made a single sound, drawing her attention. Audrey had gone pale, and she stared at Evelyn as if she couldn't believe what she was seeing. Evie's stomach tightened into knots, and she ran her hands up and down her arms nervously.

"Ari, you shouldn't be up and about," she stated, softly. "You are still…sick."

"You aren't responsible for him," Audrey said.

Evelyn looked startled, for Audrey was usually open and caring. She could be sarcastic, but Evie had never seen her so belligerent. "Actually, I am," Evelyn countered, softly. She had pulled him off the cold, hard ground of the garage. She had taken him in, she had made that choice and had become responsible for him. "He is my boyfriend, after all."

Ari put his hand on her shoulder. "It's natural for her to worry about you, Evelyn," he said, with a small smile. His eyes however, flickered towards the windows and at the trees. His strongest drive was self-defense and survival. Would he see Audrey as a threat to him? For a moment, it occurred to her that she should never have left. She should never have brought him anywhere near her family.

It bothered her that she had even conceived the idea that he could be a threat to Audrey, but she couldn't expel it from her mind. She remembered the feel of his hand around her throat, tightening and tightening until the world almost went black. Then he glanced over at her, and there was that look in his eyes. The look that he only spared at her, and she found herself offering him a hesitant smiled as she blushed, the color sweeping up her neck into her face, and her eyes glittered. Her smile smoothed out, and her postured eased while Audrey flickered between the pair, her brows furrowing. She brushed her bangs out of her eyes, and tucked it behind her ear. "So…uh, Nana, are you going to be staying for supper? We would love to have you here," she said, clasping her hands tightly behind her back. She spared Ari a quick glance before she looked back at Audrey.

"Oh, I'm afraid I can't," Audrey stated, tightly. She rose off the couch, her purse clasped tightly in her hand. "Have to be back at the house before Ducky knows I left. I'm afraid I…well, I wasn't exactly supposed to be out and about."

"Grandmother!" Evie gasped.

"Oh, don't use that tone on me," Audrey dismissed her with a wave of her hand. "There's still plenty of fight left in this old bird, so you don't have to worry."

"Doesn't mean I won't," Evelyn countered, arms crossed over her chest.

"Hmm." Audrey said, staring at Evelyn for a long moment. "Evelyn, will you…escort me out to my car? I have a few things I would like to discuss with you before I leave," she said, smoothly. Her lips curled upward, and she gave Ari a smile. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Reese. I look forward to further visits."

"As do I," Ari stated, with polite incline of his head.

"Evelyn," her grandmother looked at her pleasantly, but there was a shadow in her eyes. "Follow me, please," she said, then turned on her heel and headed towards the door.

Evelyn stared for a good moment, once again thrown by her grandmother's strange behavior. She looked at Ari, who just cast a calculating stare at the doorway before he looked at her. She would have to blind to see the hint of concern in his dark eyes, and she reached up squeezing his hand that rested on her shoulder before she slipped from him towards the front door. She followed her grandmother outside, and stood there hesitantly in the doorway. There was something about the way Audrey held herself, and the look upon her face that made Evelyn wish to turn around.

As if she knew exactly where Evie's mind had wandered, Audrey shot her a sharp gaze and pointed one bony finger in her direction. "Oh, no. You don't Evelyn Matthews! Don't make me invoke your middle name to get you to come back here," Audrey threatened, and her green eyes were narrowed into slits.

The thought of turning back into her house and locking the door, was appealing and she wondered if she did that if Audrey would just go away. No, she wouldn't. The old bird was far too stubborn for that, so Evelyn walked back out the door flashing Ari a smile when she saw him peer around the corner. Honestly, the man was far too paranoid sometimes. Shutting the door, she slowly walked down the steps and towards her grandmother who was waiting beside the car. "Yes, grandmother?" Evelyn asked, demurely.

Audrey wasn't fooled in the slightly. "I was just wondering something, dear," her grandmother began, oh so sweetly. Then she asked her question. And that question made Evelyn make a noise. It was a terrible, undignified noise that sounded something in between a cat being strangled and a cat dying before she swayed backwards on her feet, staring at her grandmother in complete horror. "W-w-what did you just say?" Evelyn finally managed to croak out, her heart pounding in her chest while her mind screamed that this could not possibly be happening.

"I asked if you wouldn't mind telling me why the young man that shot you and kidnapped you twice is in your house claiming to be boyfriend? Hmm?"

Her heart just stopped. She felt several seconds pass by where she just stared slack jaw at Audrey, as fear stole away her. Evelyn reached up, and pressed her knuckles against her mouth as she felt a tremble run through entire body.

Audrey saw that Evelyn would not speak, so she continued. "You know I've forgiven a lot of men for a lot of things, but I don't think I could ever forgive one for shooting and kidnapping me. No, those things are pretty unforgivable unless the sex was fantastic," Audrey said, thoughtfully tapping her chin while Evelyn was kind of thinking she was going have aneurysm. "Is it? I imagine it must be. He has a tush that you could bounce quarter off of and is quite fit. I guess killing people for a living would keep someone fit."

"He doesn't kill people for a living," Evelyn tried to defend.

Audrey shot her a dry look.

"Much," Evie added.

"Look," Audrey pinched her brow, "I've always know you would have a penchant for bad boys ever since you have those James Dean posters in your room as a teenager, but Evelyn this is really taking things too far."

"Grams," Evelyn sighed. "Look, I understand you worried and you're thinking of throwing me in an insane asylum most likely, but-"

"Oh, I am thinking no such thing," Audrey cut her off. "I'm thinking of marching home, getting my shot-gun and going to have a talk with Agent Gibbs. Of all the dunderheaded things to do is to force you to house your…" Audrey trailed off when she saw the guilt fill Evelyn's eyes up, and her granddaughter's face to go pale. "Oh, Evie. Oh, no. What are you thinking?"

"Grams," Evelyn said, her voice barely more than a whisper.

"You have just gotten your life together! You have finally told your father everything, and have gotten everything you fought for and you are jeopardizing for this…this monster!" It came out as a harsh whisper. Audrey would have screamed, but the last thing she wanted was to alert the man that she knew who he was.

"He is working with the FBI. He only has to stay here until its safe for him to be elsewhere," Evelyn explained, hurriedly. For a moment she was dizzy and nauseated. As if all the walls were pressing in on her, but she breathed deep hoping the feeling would pass. It didn't.

"And that makes it okay? Everything he did to you, and to your group is erased by him trying to 'work'," Audrey did air quotes which would have been hilarious in other conversation, but in this case made Evelyn flinch back as if she had been struck, "with the FBI? Is that?"

"No, I'm not saying that," Evelyn said, pressing the palms of her hands to her forehead as she tried to keep the situation from spiraling out of control. She finally dropped her hands to her side, and looked up Audrey who looked furious. "Look, he saved my life. I know you don't want to hear that because he put me through hell, too. And I know that none of this makes sense, and I wish I had some way of explaining to you so that it would," Evelyn voice trembled, and she wiped the tear that rolled down her cheek. "But I can't."

"Oh…oh, Evie," Audrey stared at her now, sadly. Her green eyes were horrified with some kind of realization. "My poor little fool."

Evelyn did not deny her words. Didn't even ask what they meant because if she was honest with herself, she already knew. She clenched and unclenched her hands wishing they would stop shaking. "I know…I know that you have done so much for me. You give me so much, so much more than I could have ever hoped for and if it weren't for you in my life, I'm not sure I would have ever made it to where I am today," Evelyn said, constantly wiping the tears away from her cheeks. "And you're are such an honest woman. I don't think you've ever once lied to me."

Audrey's eyes were wet with her own tears, and had pulled hanky from somewhere delicately placing it against her nose trying to rein in the tears. Evelyn ran her hands down her face, and sniffed. "You have given me so much, and I have so little to offer you. And it's not fair that I ask for anymore," she swallowed thickly.

"But you are going to," Audrey whispered, knowingly.

"But I'm going to," Evelyn nodded, her eyes fixated on the ground. Her expression was heartbroken and shattered. She could feel herself teetering on the edge of a breakdown, and was doing everything to pull herself in. "I need you to trust me. I need you to trust me on this. I know this is asking a lot, maybe more than I have asked for before, but I am asking."

Audrey looked hesitant.

"You don't know Ari. You don't trust him. That's fine," Evelyn said, nodding. "I accept that. But you know me. You trust me, don't you? All I am asking is for a chance to prove to you that Ari is not all bad."

"And if that chance ends up getting you killed? How can I live with myself, Evelyn?" Audrey asked. "You are so important to me. You have filled my life with joy, and happiness and gave me some of the best years that I could ever ask for. How can you ask me to disregard something that could take you away from me? From everyone who cares about you?"

"I said I was asking for a lot," Evie's lips quirked into a humorless smile.

"Do you ever stop to think that you're asking too much?" Audrey countered, heatedly.

"Every damn second," Evelyn replied, seriously. Her arms were wrapped her waist, and her fingers dug painfully in her side.

Audrey stood there, for a moment before she released a long heavy sigh. "I don't see how I could stop you anyway," she breathed out, tiredly. "You've backed me into a corner where whatever I choice, I will end up hurting you."

"I…I don't meant to do that to you…" Evelyn whispered out.

"But you did," Audrey sighed. "I hope he's worth it, Evelyn. I really do. It will take me a while to get used to…him being here. For what it's worth, he was charming for a man who shot you."

Evelyn managed to crack a smile. "Not going to let that go are you?" She said, with a watery laugh.

"Not until he lets you shoot him then he can see how he likes it," Audrey sniffed, trying to use the humor to hide the fear that she felt.

"But then I would have to kidnap him twice…" Evelyn trailed off and wondered if her saving Ari in the parking garage could be construed as kidnapping.

"Evelyn," Audrey was giving her a sharp look.

"Nothing. Just…nothing," Evie shook her head. "Are…are you going alright? I mean, the heart attack…and now all of this…I couldn't bear to lose you either, you know?" She said, softly.

"I know," Audrey swallowed thickly. "And the heart attack was minor. Not enough to take the winds out from underneath the wings of this old bird." Her laugh sound artificial and fake. "Well…I should be getting back to Ducky's. He will be worried about me. I'm afraid he's acting more of a mother hen than a duck, and it's not attractive at all."

"Audrey, I am so sorry," she said, watching her grandmother get into the car.

"I know, honey child. I know," Audrey nodded, with a dismal attempt at a smile on her face. "I just hope you don't end being the one sorry in the end."

With that Audrey slammed the car door shut, and drove off leaving Evelyn standing there feeling like the most horrible person in the entire world. As the car drove off down the driveway until she couldn't see it anymore, Evelyn let out a noise. A sob if the tears burning her eyes were any indication, and she closed her eyes when she heard the front door open. Ari's foot falls were almost indiscernible from the wind, but she could make them out and turned towards him, opening her eyes to see him staring at her. His gaze was indecipherable as if he was waiting for something.

She wanted to be anger. To be mad. To blame him, but the truth was that she was the one that responsible for this mess. Her shoulders slumped, and her hands fell to her sides. "Can you just…hold me?" Evelyn asked, suddenly. The sudden need to be held was so overwhelming, and she looked at him with pleading gaze. "Please?" She added, softly.

Immediately Ari swept her into his arms, and he held her tightly. She let out a shaky breath, wrapped her arms around him and draw him closer. Fears and doubts had welled up inside of her, but she had come too far for them to get her now. She closed her eyes before burying her face into the crook of his neck letting his warmth and scent envelope her driving it all away even if it was only for a moment.

"What do you mean you have a leak, Fornell?" A dark cold rage gnawed at his gut as his blue eyes were narrowed into vicious slits at the FBI Agent. He paced the floor of the morgue like a caged lion, and Tony and Kate wisely stood out of his way. All of it came flooding back. The news of his wife and daughter's death, the heart wrenching pain that had driven him so close to the edge and some days he really questioned if he hadn't taken a nosedive right off that edge. He ran a hand through his hair aggravated and his jaw clenched tightly as he waited for Fornell to reply.

"It means we had a leak. Agent Hudson was a mole, sent to gather sensitive information and pass it along to someone. We just found out and we were on our way to apprehend him when…well, you see what happened," Fornell gestured to said 'Agent Hudson' who now was on the body slab.

"Whoever he was working for got to him first," Kate stated, quietly. Her brown eyes rested upon Gibbs, assessing before she shared a worried look with Tony. Tony bowed his head slightly, and rested his hand on the small of her back. Kate said nothing about it, nor did she pull away.

"What information are we talking about Fornell?" Jenny Shepard immediately seized control of the conversation. Her expression was tight, and her lips were drawn downward into a frown. "Are we talking national security? Or-"

"Something more personal, I'm afraid," Fornell said, cutting the Director's speculation off. His gaze flickered to Gibbs, and he hesitated. Swallowing thickly, he ran a hand down his face. "Agent Matthews has been working on…a special case for us," he divulged, just knowing he was going to have another punch to the face in the future. Was it too much to hope that Gibbs would wait until his nose was healed up? Probably.

"I was not aware that Agent Matthews was on any joint case with the FBI," Jenny stated, and sent Gibbs a pointed look with an arched eyebrow.

Gibbs turned and frowned at Fornell. "Case? What case?" He asked, his voice light, but his expression was hard. "Does it have any reason to that Alejandro Rivera is after my daughter now?" He asked, his eyes narrowed in suspicion.

"I'm not at liberty to say," Fornell said, shortly.

"Cut the bullshit, Fornell," Gibbs barked, taking a violent step forward. "I want to know what the hell you've gotten my daughter involved in!"

"Your daughter's involvement was her choice," said Fornell, flatly. "And I am not at liberty to speak of it, Gibbs. You daughter is not the only one that is at risk here, and she is not the most important piece on the board right now."

"Do not talk about her like she is a pawn in some kind of game, Fornell," Gibbs stated, threateningly. He stood at his full and stared down at Fornell with his hands clenched at his sides.

"Enough!" Ducky snapped, dropping his clipboard down against the metal slab loudly. "This fighting is getting no one anywhere. Look, Agent Fornell," Ducky walked towards the FBI agent, with a surprising dark look on his face, "Evelyn Matthews is someone dear to everyone in this room. I suggest that you tell use what this mole knew that is so vital and what exactly it has to do with Evelyn, or I guarantee that you will be joining your former agent on a body slab."

"Are you threatening me?" Fornell asked.

"No, he is warning you," Gibbs told him, darkly. "If anything happens to Evelyn because of this case that you have her on, Fornell, I will make you regret it."

Fornell pursed his lips.

"I think for the sake of future relations between NCIS and the FBI, it would be in your best interest to answer that question," said Jenny, arms crossed over her chest.

Fornell glowered for a moment, but relented with a heavily sigh. "They know the location of Evelyn's house. While I have shadows already there, I am afraid that someone may attempt to attack," the FBI agent said, and took a step away from Gibbs just as a precaution while he raised a hand to his sore nose. "I wanted to inform the…Director of the situation, before I headed out with a team to take Evelyn to a safer location."

"Witness protection?" Tony blurted out.

"No. Nothing that serious. Just to a secure location until we can determine how much information Hudson leaked out," Fornell assured, seeing the vein on Gibbs's forehead bulge out. "Just as a precaution."

Gibbs stared, stonily at Fornell before he turned toward DiNozzo. "Has our suspect talked anymore Tony?" Gibbs asked, briskly.

"No. His lips are zipped tight," Tony stated, his eyes a bit wide.

"I want him singing like a caged bird in one hour. Take McGee with you. It will be good practice," Gibbs stated, with a firm nod.

"Where are you going?" Jenny asked, eyebrow arched.

"I'm going to get my daughter," Gibbs stated, simply.

END OF CHAPTER!

Normally this chapter was longer, but I have lost half of my writing due to a flash drive that just died. Just won't work no matter what I do. Luckily I had half of my stuff saved on my computer just in case. Anyways hoped you enjoyed.

Rrs are appreciated.
