ZIVA'S INTERLUDE #2

Heartbeat

Ziva concentrated on his breathing, on counting steps, on anything but the pain as she stumbled through the woods. She had to reach the road, and then acquire a vehicle to get to Ari and Evelyn as soon as possible. Her father had become impatient as all his attempts on Evelyn had come back fruitless, and she feared what he might do especially when he discovered her escape. She wiped the back of her head against her cheek, smearing the blood across her skin. Her father's guards were efficient in their methods of torture, there was little doubt of that as her body burned and ached and black spots danced in front of her vision.

However, they were arrogant and had left Ziva alone when they thought she had passed out from the pain. Using hairpin in her hair, she had lock picked the handcuffs and snuck out. Ziva wanted to protected people—it was she went through all that she had, to do good. Above all, she wished to protect Ari—even from himself. She pulled her hand away from her side and looked at the thick blood covering her palm. She grimaced, and took a deep breath. The wind whipped around her violently and a chill shot down her spine. Each breath expelled from her mouth was agonizing, and pain burned through her body like a hot brand. Dark closed in from all around, trying to drag her under and she wanted it. She wanted to just close her eyes, and fall to the ground and never get up again. But she didn't. She stubbornly pushed onward, across the uneven ground as fast as she could without any shoes.

Her stomach heaved again viciously even though she had nothing left to spit up. Summoning every ounce of sheer will in her body, Ziva clenched her jaw and shoved it down. Her dark eyes were narrowed in concentration, as she held the knife tightly in her hand. She listened for any sounds, any trace that they might be following and eyed every shadow warily. From childhood, the children of Eli David were trained to be weapons and if anyone ever discovered the full depths that Eli went to ensure that, they would be horrified.

Ziva knew their father cared about them. On some level, he did truly care, but she also knew that he was wrong. He was wrong about Ari, and he was wrong for what he chose to do to them. It was time to take all that wrong, and make it right. For a moment there was a pause, even the wind stopped and the only sound she heard was the dull beat of her heart echoing in her ear drums. Then a fury swept through her and she let it build, that terrible need for retribution that was a well inside her.

It burst through her shattering every ounce of restraint, and she found herself sprinting through the trees. The pain faded into the background, and all she focused on was the steady beat of her heart and the need to get to her brother. Somewhere far away she thought she heard a woman's cry, and a jolt went through her stomach. She prayed that she wasn't too late.
