Sorry about this long break, I've just started working so been busy with that. Will post all of the finished chapters tonight, though, so hope you enjoy these chapters telling the final parts of the EF-flashbacks!
Killian made sure to send Henry into the boathouse first before helping Smee close and lock the door. At least it would force the monkey to take a different route, the one over the water, and hopefully it would be easier to defend.
"What now, Captain?" Smee called. Killian looked down the length of the building. It ended in a sharp corner, so that both the wooden pier and the water basin were shaped like L:s. A pair of boats lay up on land, probably to be repaired, but by the end of the house he spotted a few still in the water. They should be close to the house's second exit.
"Take the boy there", he said and pointed with his good hand, in which he now held his gun. "Far exit. Find a new boat. I'll stay here to deal with our winged friends."
He heard Wolfgang's voice through the door, shouting a strange word that he guessed was a spell. A screech told him that the spell had missed its target. He turned and looked at the boy; Henry had paled significantly and was obviously trying to process what was going on. Killian cursed the fact that they had not been able to bring the boy's true memories back along with Emma's; he would have needed them.
"Henry, go with Smee", he ordered, earning a small nod from the boy. "Don't stop no matter what you hear."
With that Smee and Henry took off down the pier and Killian turned towards the entry way. He heard Filipi's voice from outside, also shouting an unknown word, which was accompanied by a blue light. It seemed to have halted the creature's progress, because the screech seemed to fade away somewhat. That, however, did not make him take his eyes away from where it would most likely appear.
A few seconds later it seemed he had been right to do exactly that as a flying monkey came swooping down from the sky, screeching as it aimed for the boathouse. Killian glanced to his left to make sure that Smee and Henry were out of the way, only to find that Henry had stopped and paled even more as the creature closed in on them. Smee turned around further down the pier, looking around for a weapon of his own that could be used at a distance.
"Henry, go!" Killian yelled. Henry blinked and managed to force himself into action once more, sprinting towards the man in the red cap. The screech intensified and Killian looked up to see a horde of monkeys closing in on them. The first was far too close for his liking already. He raised his gun and fired, hitting it square in the chest as it was turning towards its intended pray. It immediately dissolved into ash.
A second one appeared and made the same mistake as its companion, which gave him the opportunity to fire off another shot and turn this second monkey into ash as well, just before a low grunt from further inside the boathouse drew his attention. He spun around, his eyes widening as he saw that Henry had stumbled over a rope on the floor and now lay sprawled on the wooden planks, still awake but definitely slowed down. This brief distraction also allowed another monkey to enter the boathouse and place itself on one of the chords beneath the ceiling, right above Henry. It screeched in triumph as it eyed its prey.
"No!" Killian yelled and pulled the trigger again.
No shot came. He was out of bullets. All he could do was watch as the monkey dived from the chord towards the boy.
Emma was glad she had decided to place a GPS tracker on Henry's phone, even without her memories of how he had acted during his stay in Storybrooke when he had constantly run off on his own little missions in order to prove something, or simply stop the two sides of his family from fighting. It had now enabled them to locate the right boathouse. Seeing spells being fired from one end and also hearing the screech of the flying monkeys had caused them to split up, sending the magicians running to help their friends and at the same time confirming that they were in the right location, while Emma, Regina, David and Mary Margaret tried to find another way inside. Over the phone they received confirmation that Henry was inside the boathouse, with Hook. During the few moments she managed to look past her worry for her son's wellbeing, Emma bitterly thought that the pirate had a few questions to answer about what he was doing here with Henry.
As they rounded the boathouse a door slid up and Smee exited, looking very surprised, and relieved, to see them. Emma decided to ignore him, for now, but made a mental note to talk to the round man about all of this later as well. Instead she and the others ran inside.
"No!" she heard Hook yell, a sound that was partly drowned in a screech from a monkey. Emma pulled out her gun and raised it instinctively, barely aiming before firing.
The shot hit the monkey as it dove for Henry, dissolving it into ash. Emma briefly met her son's gaze from where he lay on the floor. He was pale, confused and afraid, but otherwise seemed unharmed. Hook stood by the far door, a gun in his hand. The fact that he had not shot the monkey despite his scream and good aim made Emma think that he was out of bullets. Typical.
Another monkey appeared, swooping down and landing behind a set of barrels close to the boy on the floor. His plan was apparently to sneak forward and cover himself as much as possible. Emma hesitated; he was at an angle where she might hit Henry if she aimed her shot somewhat wrong.
In that moment something swished past her and the monkey dissolved, leaving David's sword clattering to the ground. Emma shot a glance at her father in an attempt to show just how stupid she thought that move had been but he did not return it; instead he ran forward to help Henry back up on his feet. A screech from outside alerted them of the presence of at least one more monkey.
"I never liked pets", Regina hissed and conjured a massive fireball in her hand, which she then sent chasing the monkey as if it was a tracking missile. In the end it split in two, with one part cutting off the monkey's path and hitting it square in the chest. The sound of something clattering above their heads caused Emma to fire off another shot at a monkey that had decided to try blending in with the dark ceiling, while Regina sent out another one of those fireballs to catch a monkey that had just appeared by the doorway. It dissolved with a slight yelp.
And with that everything suddenly became silent. There were no more screeches, no more wings flapping, no more claws scratching the wooden pillars of the house. Emma lowered her gun and turned towards her son, who was still being held up by David. When her father saw the look she gave him he nodded and stepped aside, picking up his sword and sheathing it as he went.
"Henry", Emma said and hurried forward. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah", the boy said, looking out over the water, "yeah, what... what were those things?"
His voice was close to breaking and Emma considered wrapping him in a hug, but the look in his eyes told her that a hug from her was the least he wanted at the moment. She had betrayed him by not telling him the truth of this place. His eyes darted towards David.
"Why does he have a sword?" he questioned, a desperate tone hinted in his voice.
"It's all going to make sense in a minute, I promise", Emma said and clutched the object in her left hand. The storybook. She would have preferred to have kept it in a bag, but there had been no time to find one of the right size.
"What are you talking about?" Henry demanded to know. Emma swallowed and brought the book forward so that it was in between them. Henry frowned at the object; in his mind he was far too old for fairytales.
"I'm sorry I was keeping things from you", she said, drawing his attention again. "You were right. You deserve to know the truth."
"About fairytales?" Henry said, disbelief and anger visible on his face. "I don't understand..."
"Do you trust me?" Emma interrupted. He blinked, taken aback.
"Yes, of course I do", he eventually answered. Emma took a deep breath before she continued.
"Then I need you to believe."
"Believe in what?"
"Believe in magic", she finished. Henry looked down at the storybook again, still not convinced. Emma wondered if it was something that ran in the family; it had taken him eating a poisoned apple for her to believe, despite months of him nagging her about it.
"From a book?" he questioned.
"It's more than just a book", Emma responded. "Do you believe in me?"
Henry's eyes searched hers, the eyes he had inherited from her, the eyes that also Mary Margaret had; hazel. He had always known when she was telling the truth and she hoped that he relied on that knowledge now.
"Yes", he eventually answered.
"Then take it", she said, indicating to the book. He looked down at the object once more; the brown leather, the faded golden leathers and the frayed yellowed pages. Then his hands came up and took hold of it.
His eyes widened and flickered from one thing to another as if he was dreaming, but other than that he did not move for what seemed like forever. Emma shot a glance back at Regina; she would certainly know if something was wrong. The dark-haired woman showed no signs of that, however, although she did show fear and anticipation. Much like everyone else did.
Then Henry blinked and focused on her once again, a small frown appearing on his forehead.
"Mom?" he asked. She smiled at him before his gaze turned towards Regina, the frown disappearing altogether and being replaced by a wide grin.
"Mom!"
Emma looked back and saw Regina's red lips widening in a smile of her own while tears threatened to spill down her cheeks. She ran forward and enveloped Henry in a hug that he was quick to return, clinging to her black coat.
"I remember!" he said when they parted, then turned towards Emma with a joyous grin. "I remember!"
Regina smiled at her over his shoulder; he was nearly as tall as her now.
"Do it, Emma", she urged. "Break the curse."
Emma nodded and leaned forward to press a kiss to her son's forehead, just like she had done when breaking the last curse.
Instead she found him disappearing.
"So sorry to interrupt."
They all spun around and saw Zelena standing by the main entrance door, holding Henry in a firm grip by his neck. She smiled widely.
"Now who wants to say goodbye first?"
