Chapter Twelve

The days passed by in surprisingly quiet fashion. Jon was grounded for an infinite amount of time because Elise and David couldn't think of an amount they considered appropriate after everything they had found out. Also Jon seemed to be avoiding Johanna like the plague despite his lingering presence around the house and their shared meal times, and Johanna honestly didn't mind. She knew that even though she had seen a glimmer of the old Jon in his eyes that night and that while he had mildly confessed his wrong doings to their parents, Johanna wasn't sure she could really trust him yet. There was no way that Jon would change years of behavior overnight, so, she would remain cautious when Jon started talking to her again. Thankfully, most of her focus the last week had not been on her brother.

Now that Johanna finally realized her feelings for JJ and that the worry she had been silently harboring about the last seven weeks being a dream was for not, Johanna had no qualms about letting JJ know how much she loved him. The night before (Thursday night) Johanna had drove to La Push, using the car that her and Jon were meant to share for the first time in a very long time, and had spent the evening with JJ at his place. Harry was working and Cam was on patrol meaning that they were alone once again in the house.

The evening had started out completely innocent with the pair fully intending to watch a movie, but after talking for a little while as they sat on the couch the movie was forgotten and a heavy make out session ensued. That time, however, JJ's hands had remained outside of her clothes but they had strayed and grasped at her chest and backside several times thought out the evening. Johanna grinned and felt her cheeks warm slightly at the memory as she stirred the straw in her glass of soda, clinking the ice cubes together. She was in Port Angeles that day with Sarah and the girls (with Adam and Harry serving as their bodyguards that day). They had all settled into a large booth at a diner for an early dinner before they were going to head over to the theater to watch a movie. JJ, unfortunately, had to work and then had a meeting with his dad and Sam when he was finished, which was why he was not with them that night. However, that didn't stop her from thinking of him.

"What's with the face?" Sarah asked, breaking Johanna from her thoughts, and Johanna looked up at Sarah before she realized Sarah wasn't the only one looking at her. She felt her blush deepen as Lacy, Meredith, Adam, and even Harry were looking at her and all looked like they were fighting back smiles.

"What face?" Johanna asked and her friends laughed.

"You looked like you were thinking something naughty, Johanna," Meredith said in a loud whisper, and Johanna's blush deepened yet again and to the point that she was sure her face was bright red. "Just what have you and JJ been doing when you're on your own?" she asked teasingly and Johanna took a sharp breath before she tossed a napkin at her, which only made everyone laugh again. However, that time she joined them in their laughter. Johanna may have been embarrassed, but she knew Meredith was only teasing her in good fun and would likely do the same to JJ (probably more so) next she saw him. "Are you going to answer my question?" she asked with a light laugh.

"No. You can ask JJ next time you see him," Johanna said with a smile on her bright red face and Meredith grinned at her in return.

"Well, whatever it is you should keep it up," Lacy said, drawing Johanna's attention to her. "You're practically glowing."

"She's happy," Harry chimed in and Johanna's eyes turned to him, "and so is JJ. He's singing in the shower, loudly, and not well I might add."

"Yeah, JJ can't sing. I feel sorry for your and Cam's ears," Sarah said, wincing slightly, and everyone laughed quietly at the face she made.

"We should head over to the theater," Lacy said after glancing at her phone. "The movie starts in forty minutes." They had already paid their bill, so, agreeing with Lacy since it would take them about ten minutes to walk to the theater the group of friends clamored out of the booth, left the diner, and headed towards the theater. Harry had fell in line beside Johanna as they walked in the back of the group and she glanced up at him, giving him a small smile.

"I'm sorry about his singing," Johanna said and Harry chuckled.

"Don't be," he said. "I'm glad you've finally accepted him fully. He knew you cared about him, but he was worried that you still doubted him."

"I didn't doubt him because he's practically perfect. I was just scared because I had felt myself falling for him so fast and part of me had a hard time believing that it was real. That he was real," Johanna said quietly and Harry nodded in understanding. "I know now that I've got nothing to be afraid of and while I still think that he's far too good for me, I'm not going to give him up. Not ever. I'm not going to apologize for being me anymore. If someone doesn't like me, it's their loss. I've got great parents, good friends, and a boyfriend who loves me to the moon in back. I don't have anything to worry about." Johanna looked up at Harry and the young man smiled down at her, a proud expression on his face and happiness in his eyes.

"That you don't," Harry said and Johanna smiled up at him in return. "You're an amazing young woman, Johanna; beautiful on the inside and out. JJ's lucky to have you in his life and don't you forget that."

"We're both lucky to have each other," Johanna said and Harry smiled before he wrapped his arm loosely around her shoulders.

"That you are," he said with a soft chuckle and Johanna found herself laughing with him. However, Harry's laughter ended abruptly as he stopped walking and stiffened before he pulled Johanna close to him. Adam stopped walking as well, grabbing Sarah's arm and forcing her to stop and since they were leading the group Meredith and Lacy stopped as well.

"What's wrong?" Sarah asked and Adam and Harry shared a look.

"We're leaving," Harry said and the girls looked at him. "Now." The fierce expression on Harry's face silenced any other questions or protests from the girls because they all knew what had the two shape shifters on edge.

A vampire was close by, likely the one that had threatened Johanna and JJ, and Johanna felt anxiety fill her. It had been over a week since any of the guys had picked up on the vampire's scent, and Johanna had started to relax thinking that the vampire had decided she wasn't worth the trouble dealing with two large packs of giant wolves. Apparently she was wrong in her thinking. Thankfully, Harry's truck and Adam's car were not far and the six of them walked as fast as they could without breaking out into a full on jog to the vehicles.

"Take Sarah, Meredith, and Lacy and head straight to Jacob's," Harry said, his arm still wrapped soundly around Johanna's shoulders as he unlocked his truck and helped her up in it, his eyes on Adam, who nodded. "Call him and have one of the girls call Sam," he said as he closed the door. "I'll call JJ."

"Got it," Adam said before he ushered the girls in his car and Harry climbed into his truck. Johanna sat silently as she fastened her seatbelt and Harry pulled out of his parking spot and started for La Push far faster than he probably should have been.

"I'll get JJ on the phone so you can talk to him if you want," Johanna said, pulling her cell phone out of her bag and Harry glanced at her. He'd forgotten to take his phone out of his pocket when he got in his truck and he nodded at her.

"That'd be great," he said and Johanna nodded before she quickly pulled up JJ's number and dialed it.

"Hey Jo," came JJ's voice over the phone and Johanna felt herself relax slightly at the sound of his voice. "I thought you guys were seeing a movie."

"We were, but something came up," Johanna said.

"What happened?" JJ asked quickly and Johanna shook her head even though he couldn't see her.

"Harry needs to talk to you about that. I'm going to give him the phone," she said.

"Okay," JJ said tightly and she looked at Harry before she handed him the phone. Harry took the phone from Johanna's hand and pressed it to his ear and let out a heavy sigh.

"JJ, he was in Port Angeles," Harry said. "He didn't show his face but he was close enough that Adam and I could pick up his scent." There was a pause and Johanna watched as Harry nodded his head. "That's already the plan. Adam's with Sarah, Meredith, and Lacy and I've got Johanna with me." There was another pause and Harry nodded his head once again. "Okay and we're already on our way now and we should be there soon," Harry said. "Here she is." Harry held out Johanna's phone and she quickly took it before she brought it to her ear.

"Hey," she said.

"Hey," he said. "I'm going to be waiting for you at my parents' house, the way Harry drives you'll be here soon, but once you're here and safe I'm going to be going out with Harry and the others. My dad and Adam will be here to watch over you, my mom, and the girls."

"JJ," she said softly and he cut in before she could say much more.

"I know you'd like me to stay with you, like last time, but I've got to go out," he said. "He's back and if it's taken him this long to come back, he's planned something. I'm not going to let him go through with it. I'm going to end this." Johanna swallowed hard and nodded her head.

"O-," Johanna started but she didn't get to finish. Something slammed hard into Harry's truck on the side, sending the truck rolling off the two lane road and into the trees. A scream ripped from Johanna's throat as the truck rolled, but after hitting her head as the truck hit a tree Johanna knew nothing but darkness.

Johanna's scream in his ear and the sound of glass breaking before their call was cut off froze JJ's blood in his veins as he stood stock still in his parents' kitchen and his cell phone dropped the tiled floor. JJ didn't care in the slightest as he heard the screen crack because fear filled him. "JJ, what is it?" his mother asked quickly. "JJ?" Aurora asked as she put her hand on his forearm, but JJ broke away from her with a growl and ran out the patio door. Jumping off the deck JJ phased mid-air and took off running, his massive bronze colored wolf disappearing within the trees as Aurora watched helplessly from the open patio door.

"Where's JJ?" Jacob asked as he walked into the kitchen, phone in hand with a scowl on his face. Aurora sighed as she turned around, JJ's broken phone in her hands.

"Something's happened. He was talking to Harry when I came into the kitchen and then he was talking to Johanna when all of a sudden he went pale and dropped his phone," Aurora said. "I tried to ask him what was wrong but he just growled, took off, and phased before he ran into the trees."

"Harry and Adam scented the vampire in Port Angeles," Jacob said and Aurora's eyes widened. "They're on their way back-," Jacob made to continue but his phone ringing cut him off. He looked at it and sighed when he saw Sarah's name and picture on the screen. "It's Sarah," Jacob said before he answered the phone and Aurora walked over to her husband, her heart racing in her chest for a reason she couldn't explain.

"Oh my God Dad," came Sarah's trembling and tear and panic filled voice before Jacob could even say hello.

"Sarah, what is it?" Jacob asked, shoulders tensing and eyes narrowing.

"There's been an accident," she said around her tears.

"Are you okay? Was anyone hurt?" Jacob asked and Aurora gripped at Jacob's forearm with her free hand, bringing Jacob's brown eyes to her blue.

"We weren't in the accident. It was Harry and Johanna," Sarah said. "Harry said a vampire rammed the side of his truck while he was driving, they rolled into the trees. Harry's okay aside from a few cuts and a broken arm that Adam's stabilizing but Johanna's gone! Harry said there were two vampires, the one from before and another male. His arm had been pinned and he couldn't get free to stop them from taking Johanna and we were a couple of miles behind them so we weren't there and Adam wasn't able to help. Dad there's . . . there's . . . there's a lot of blood here that isn't Harry's," she finished before he could hear her let out a soft sob.

"It's going to be okay, sweetie," Jacob said as he processed what his daughter had just told him. He realized then why JJ had taken off like he had. The accident must have happened while he had been on the phone with Johanna, and in that moment his thoughts turned to the night that Renesmee had been born and how he had almost lost Aurora. He knew exactly what JJ was going through only his son was going through worse because his imprint was in the hands of vampires and likely severely injured. "Tell Adam I said to phase and start tracking. The rest of us will join up in a minute. I need you to be strong and drive Harry and the girls here, okay?"

"O-okay," she said. "We'll be there soon." With a few more reassuring words to his daughter, Jacob ended the call and took a deep breath.

"There was an accident. Harry was hurt and Johanna's missing," Jacob said.

"Missing!" Aurora exclaimed, her hold on Jacob's arm tightening. "Was it that vampire?" Jacob nodded curtly and Aurora gasped quietly and let go of Jacob's arm to cover her mouth with her hand. "We should have called Alice when this whole mess started. She would have helped us by keeping an eye on that vampire," Aurora said, her voice shaky as tears came to her eyes and she lowered her hand. "This would have never have happened if we had."

"It may have, Aurora; we did what we thought was best and there's no point in dwelling on things we should have done," Jacob said before he placed a comforting kiss on her temple. "We'll get her back." Aurora could only nod before she took Jacob's phone from him and watched as Jacob jogged out the patio door, taking off his shirt in the process. It was a second later that she saw his russet wolf run into the trees and after taking a deep breath Aurora put down JJ's broken phone and kept Jacob's in her hand.

Looking down at Jacob's phone Aurora quickly moved through Jacob's contacts. Bella, Edward, Renesmee, and Seth were due to secretly arrive in Forks that day to visit Charlie and Sue. Jacob probably wouldn't be happy with what she was about to do, but she didn't care. She hoped that Jacob was right and that they would find her, but it was growing dark and she feared by the time they did it would be too late and JJ as well as everyone else would be devastated if they were.

Johanna slowly woke up and her head was pounding and her left shoulder was throbbing something awful as she groaned quietly and opened her eyes. She was dizzy and in a lot of pain but she was not where she expected to be. She had expected to find herself in Harry's truck or better yet the hospital, but she was in neither place. It was dark but there was a soft glow from emanating from a camping lantern that rested on a large rock nearby. Johanna realized then that she was in a cave of some sort and not only was she in pain she was freezing.

"I was starting to worry that the bump on your head did a good bit of damage," a familiar voice drawled, causing Johanna to gasp quietly as she turned her eyes towards the sound. There standing and leaning casually against the rock wall was the vampire that had come upon her and JJ in the clearing. His dirty blonde hair was neat about his head and he was dressed in a pair of loose black jeans, a cream colored shirt, and his brown leather jacket that he had worn the last time he crossed her path. Johanna tried to sit up, but a wave of dizziness forced her to remain where she was. "I wouldn't move too much, sugar. You've lost a good bit of blood, which I have to say I may have sampled while I patched up your shoulder and you are very tasty. It'll be a treat to drain you completely once things are set."

"Why did you patch me up if you're just going to kill me later?" Johanna found herself asking and she blamed the fact that she was in a lot of pain and dizzy for her loose mouth. The vampire chuckled as he pushed off the wall and took a few steps towards her and squatted down in front of her.

"My colleague had asked the same question," he said with a sneer of a smile and his blood red eyes shining with a bit of twisted mirth as he looked down at her.

"Your colleague?" she asked and he chuckled.

"I needed a little help getting you away from those wolves of yours," he said as he reached out and brushed Johanna's hair from her face, the coldness of her skin making her recoil slightly. However, she didn't move too much. Her aching body wouldn't allow it. "Sadly, he had to be dealt with when he got a little too . . . thirsty," he said with a grin, "but it is what happens when dealing with random nomads that are easily bought. Not all are civilized." Johanna simply stared at him and he chuckled softly. "To answer your first question, sugar, it's all in good fun."

"Good fun?" she asked.

"Hmm, good fun," he said. "If my estimations of that mutt that is oh so protective of you, he'll track us far sooner than the rest of the mongrels. It will be fun to drain the life from you in front of him." He stood then, that sneer of a smile back on his face, before he walked towards the large opening of the cave. "He's close and alone. Just like I knew he would be," the vampire said before he turned around and easily picked Johanna up from where she laid. Not able to stop herself from doing so, she let out a pain filled cry that echoed off the stone walls of the cave and made the vampire laugh before he practically dragged her out of the cave.

Once outside Johanna realized why she was so cold. The light from the moon above allowed her to see that they were up in the mountains and there was a thick blanket of snow around them despite it being early August. However, those thoughts were lost to her when a low deep growling came from ahead of where they stood and Johanna turned her eyes towards it. A massive dark wolf stepped out of the thick trees and into the moonlight, its teeth were visible as it growled before it snapped its jaws in a gravely bark, but as Johanna caught the wolf's gaze she recognized JJ. She had yet to see him in his wolf form and while she couldn't tell what color he was, he hadn't been lying when he said he was bigger than Max, Andrew, and Harry. JJ in wolf form was huge and for some strange reason she felt like crying (out of relief or fear of what was to come she didn't know) but she held her tears back and focused on fighting through the dizziness that continued to plague her.

"Mind your temper, mutt. There's no need to be hostile," the vampire said jokingly from behind Johanna and JJ growled again. The vampire only laughed and tightened his hold on Johanna so that it was painful and caused her to cry out once again. "You know that all I need to do is bite her pretty neck and she'll start to turn, but you wouldn't like that would you? Would you rather I kill her than turn her into something you're programed to? I admit, it would be more fun for me to do the former since she is delicious." He licked her neck then and Johanna whimpered, her eyes closing tight, and JJ growled low and dangerous once again. "But you would know all about that, wouldn't you?" JJ took several steps closer but in a flash the vampire hand a fistful of Johanna's hair and pulled her head to the side, fully opening her neck up to him. Johanna had let out another cry of pain and JJ froze. "You can't get at me without hurting her, mutt, and I know that's the last thing you want. I, however, could care less." With that he moved in for the kill but his teeth were stopped just centimeters from Johanna's skin as he was ripped away from her.

The vampire had been what was holding Johanna up so when he was gone she collapsed the ground and she let out a sob then before she started to cry. The vampire let out a strangled cry before Johanna heard what sounded like rocks crumbling and the scream was silenced. Johanna was enveloped in warmth then and she let out a shuddered breath through her tears as she looked up to see JJ looking down at her with fear clear in his dark eyes. Another sob, one filled with relief, left her before she wrapped her right arm around his shoulders and clung to him as she wept. JJ let out a heavy sigh and kissed the top of her head before he whispered comforting words to her.

"JJ, she needs to get to the hospital," a familiar bell like voice said and JJ looked up only to see his Aunt Bella standing there. His Uncle Edward was just behind her, setting what was left of the vampire that he had put in a pile on fire.

"I know, Aunt Bella," JJ said, his voice horse and raspy, before he carefully lifted a quieted Johanna into his arms. Her head had lulled against his shoulder and panic filled him again because he could see that the wound on her head likely meant that she had suffered a concussion.

"Let us take her," Bella said and JJ hesitated. "You're not exactly dressed, JJ." He stiffed then because he remembered that he was naked and his aunt was undoubtedly getting an eyeful. However, Bella gave him a small smile as Edward turned from the fire and walked over them.

"We'll take good care of her, JJ," Edward said as he moved to take the girl from him. "Your father and the others are close. They can keep an eye on the fire while you run home, get dressed, and head to the hospital." JJ nodded as Edward took Johanna from him. "I'm going to take her now. The sooner she gets to the hospital, the better," Edward said and with a small rush of wind he was gone, leaving JJ standing there with his aunt.

"Her parents need to know," JJ said and Bella nodded.

"I'll make sure your mom calls them," she said. "Go on. I'll wait for Jacob and the others." JJ didn't need to be told twice because he turned around and phased quickly before he took off running once again.
