"Ahh, you gotta admit, we had a pretty good thing goin' there," Timon narrated. "We coulda gone on like that forever," Pumbaa narrated with him. "Except for one teeny weeny thing we forgot to count on," Timon continued.
The screen showed a snarling Nala pinning Simba face-up on the ground.
"… Nala?" He said quietly, recognizing her, before she backed off, recognizing him.
"Wooaah!" She exclaimed.
"Waah!" Simba exclaimed back in surprise.
"How did you…?"
"But how did you…?"
The trio were watching it all from the bushes. "This is a disaster, guys," Timon told Pumbaa and Shenzi, "A disaster, I tell ya!"
"You mean, because they've finally found each other, like 2 soul mates joined across the years by the bounds of true love?" Pumbaa asked him.
"Sweet, innocent, little Pumbaa," A patronized Timon sighed, "She's going to put a stake right through the heart of our Hakuna Matata!" He exclaimed, now alarmed.
"Oh!" Pumbaa was unconvinced, "Then I guess, we oughta do something."
"And I know just what it is," Timon said, "Guys… we can't let them feel the love tonight!"
While Simba and Nala were sitting together, Timon fired a blow-dart at them, hitting Nala's paw.
"Ow!" She lifted her paw up. Simba took the blow-dart out, then spit it out in the tall grass where the trio were, unknowingly striking Timon.
"Aaaahhh!" Timon yelled when the blow-dart hit him.
In their next attempt, Timon started lowering a spider down like a yo-yo to the lion couple; But on the way down, he passed by a female spider with a fetching appearance, abruptly stopped lowering down, and hopped up to her. They weaved a group of heart-shaped webs behind Simba and Nala as they nuzzled with each other.
"That's so romantic!" Pumbaa smiled, as he and Shenzi watched the scene.
"Ugh," Timon groaned, as he was wrapped in a cocoon of spider silk.
Next, Timon, who was on Pumbaa's back with Shenzi, threw a hive at the lion couple, but the bees hovered behind them like a cloud.
Shenzi widened her eyes upon hearing buzzing, and snapped her head around, seeing the bees behind them, before they chased Timon away.
That night, they tried yet again. Timon had several bee stings on his head, a black eye, and a missing tooth from the incident with the bees earlier that day. He gave Pumbaa a thumbs up, and it was returned by Pumbaa, before they and Shenzi, who was on Timon's side, pulled a vine taut behind Simba and Nala, who tripped over it, and tumbled down the hill.
It caused the trio to be flung out across the gully, and they plunged into a tree, disturbing a cloud of butterflies that fly around the lion couple. They fell out of the tree, and crashed onto the ground below.
"Well, that worked like a dream," Timon said sarcastically as Pumbaa whacked the side of his head, making a butterfly pop out of his ear.
"It did?" Pumbaa smiled, not noticing the meerkat's tone.
"Sarcasm is a foreign language to you, isn't it?" Timon asked him.
"Look!" Shenzi exclaimed, pointing to the cuddling lions.
"She's makin' those eyes," Timon pointed out.
"He's smilin' that smile," Pumbaa said.
"They're laughing… and hugging… and, and," Timon then started to sing, "And if he falls in love tonight. It can be assumed."
"His carefree days with us are history," Pumbaa started as well.
"In short our pal is doomed!" They sang together before they burst into sobs, with Shenzi watching awkwardly.
Later, Timon was still lamenting about their failure, while he, Pumbaa, and Shenzi walked dejectedly by the waterfall.
"Ah, that's it, guys. We gave it our best shot, but he's a goner."
Pumbaa heard talking in the distance, "Maybe not…!"
"You never give up, do you?"
"Look!" Shenzi pointed to Simba and Nala, and Timon looked in that direction.
"Listen; You think you can just show up and tell me how to live my life? You don't even know what I've been through!" Simba was exclaiming in anger.
"I would if you'd just tell me," Nala insisted.
"Forget it!"
"Fine!" Nala turned away angrily before Simba stormed off, as the trio watched from the bushes.
"Pumbaa! Shenzi! Do you know what this means?" The meerkat said, getting excited.
"Uh, he can't express his feelings, and she has commitment issues?" Pumbaa guessed.
"We won! Ya ha hahh!" Timon exclaimed excitedly, as he grabbed Pumbaa's front hooves, and spun him around, before he did the same with Shenzi, but spun her around for a longer time, "We split 'em up!"
"And, uh, that's a good thing?" The warthog asked him as Timon let go of Shenzi's front paws, and walked out to the grasslands, with her reluctantly following, where they saw Simba wrestling with himself. "Uh, he seems to be taking it kinda hard." Shenzi nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, I know. But I… heh, but it's the best thing for us. I mean for him!" Timon insisted. Just then, the clouds gathered up to form Mufasa's face in the sky, which Timon saw. "Ooh, let's go, guys. I think this storm's coming to a head."
Later that night, the trio were in their sleeping nest with Timon and Shenzi on Pumbaa's stomach.
"Hakuna Matata is safe at last, pallies, 'cause nothing's gonna keep our boy away now," The meerkat insisted. But…
"He's gone? What do you mean he's gone?!" An aghast Timon exclaimed the next morning, after Rafiki explained what happened the night before, then disappearing like the wind.
"It's just like the baboon said," Nala told them, "The king has returned." The trio stared at her, dumbfounded. "Ohh," Nala sighed exasperatedly, "Do you want me to go over it again?!"
"Yes please," A patronized Timon nodded, "But be a dear and just skip to the part about Simba? Not that your childhood wasn't fascinating."
"Okay, look: Simba's the rightful king. But after he disappeared, Scar proclaimed himself the king, and formed an alliance with the jackals…" She started explaining.
'Poor Simba,' Pumbaa thought with a concerned expression as she was talking, 'The treachery, the villainy, the sheer, indescribable horror!'
'Blah, blah, blah,' Timon thought with a concerned expression, 'Why is she toying with us? Oh, this crazy chick is gonna eat us!'
'The jackals are with Simba's uncle?' Shenzi thought with a concerned expression.
"… Simba has to go home to challenge his uncle and reclaim his rightful place as king," Nala finished, but the trio just stared at her again. "Ooooh, don't you get it?!" She started getting frustrated, "Simba needs us! Now!" She exclaimed before running off.
"He needs us?" Timon said indignantly, "Then he shouldn't have left us! If he wants to run off, and be "His Highness," then I say, don't let the branches hit ya on the way out! Leave Hakuna Matata to some who appreciates it," He stubbornly marched off.
"But, Timon… it's not really Hakuna Matata without Simba," Pumbaa insisted.
"What's gotten into you? Not Hakuna Matata? That's crazy talk; Crazy talk, I tell ya! Nothing's changed here. We had Hakuna Matata before Simba, and we've still got it now."
"We gotta help our friend, Timon!" Shenzi insisted.
"Et tu, Pumbaa, Shenzi? You're just gonna walk away, give up on all this? What happened to "friends stick together to the end? Huh? Huh? Huh?" Timon got in their now angry faces.
"I was about to ask you the same thing," Pumbaa said incisively before he turned and stalked away. He looked over his shoulder to see Timon flopping in the nest, with Shenzi standing behind him hesitantly.
"I got everything I ever wanted right here," He said stubbornly.
Shenzi dealt with all his self-centered moments ever since they met, but this was the breaking point for her. He didn't want to help the lion they raised win his real home back? That was just the last straw.
"You know, Timon," Shenzi started talking, "I always thought you were selfless, someone who puts others before himself. But I guess I was wrong." And with that, she trotted away. That one stung him, since she was never the judgmental, or anything of the sort, type of girl.
Tears filled her and Pumbaa's eyes as they ran off.
Once he was alone, Timon began soliloquizing to convince himself that he was doing the right thing, ignoring the nagging feeling in his chest. "Now, this is more like it. Elbow Room!" He exclaimed before it echoed a few times, surprising him.
He silently sat down in the bed with his forearms on his knees, "Uhhhh," His head fell face-down between his elbows in despair, "Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, oh boy," He muttered, before he looked back up.
"Hakuna Matata…" He tried singing to cheer himself up, while trying everything he did with his friends, "… What a wonderful phrase," He sounded weak, as his singing and activities had no effect on him, "Hakuna… Matata… ain't no passing craze," He sounded pathetic, as he was laying where he and his friends used to gaze at the stars, "It means… unnghh… no worries." He curled up on his side in despair.
"Hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo, ha ha!" Rafiki came dangling down, much to Timon's annoyance.
"You," He held out his hands in rejection, "No, no, no," He kept interrupting, "Don't say a word. I know what you're going to say: 'Did you find Hakuna Matata?'" He imitated Rafiki's voice, before going back to his own, "Why, yes I did! Thank you very much! And I am happy; Happy, happy, deliriously happy!" He used forced happiness.
"'Ho ho haaah! I see! Happy, is it? So, if you're so happy, why do you look so miserable?'"
Rafiki stared ahead sardonically, as Timon continued on. "Miserable, you say? Why should I be miserable? Oh, I don't know. Maybe my 3 best pals in the world deserted me. Heh. They've… they've headed off on some heroic mission. My friends…" He laid a hand over his eyes in despair, "Are gone." Then he realized; "And my Hakuna Matata went with them!" Rafiki slowly nodded, smiling. "Would you mind?" Timon referred to his head, which the mandrill smacked with his stick, "Ay!" He exclaimed, before shaking it off, "Thanks! I'm glad we had this talk." He clicked his tongue before rushing off in the direction his friends ran to.
"My work here is done," Rafiki smiled to himself.
