"Muriel!" the kids screamed.
Thomas looked in horror as Margaret slipped from Muriel's arms. He quickly held his hands out to catch Muriel as she fell forward.
"Tommy…"
"Muriel, what were you thinking?" Tommy asked as he held onto her tightly.
"I couldn't let you get hurt", she weakly said. "You've always helped me…now…it was my turn…to help you."
Muriel's eyes closed as she just laid in Tommy's arms. Murdoch looked at her in shock. He had shot a woman, an innocent woman with children, at that. He had done what an officer of his status was never supposed to do. Murdoch looked around noticing the water was rising fast. It was every man for themselves. Murdoch gave one last salute before pointing the gun to his head.
"No, Will!" another officer yelled.
Everyone screamed as Murdoch pulled the trigger, ending his own life. Without him to maintain order, the people panicked trying to get into the boat. Tommy shook Muriel in his arms, trying to get her to wake up. The kids began to cry when they saw their sister hurt and unmoving.
"Muriel!" Tommy said shaking her. "Damn it, wake up!"
He looked down at his hands when he saw blood seeping from her back, onto him. Edith, Margaret and Thomas cried when their sister wouldn't move.
"Is she dead?" Thomas asked.
Tommy looked at Muriel wondering if she really was dead. She had her lifebelt on, so hopefully that kept the bullet from going in too deep. He could see her chest rise and fall, indicating that she was still breathing.
"She's still alive", Tommy said. "Come on. Everyone into the boat."
The officers looked at them and gave no objections. With Murdoch gone, all form of control was gone too. With only two lifeboats life, the passengers were crazy and desperate to get off the ship alive. The ship was sinking faster and faster with the water rising. The band was just making things worse. The musicians seemed to know that this was the end for them all. They stood together and started playing the music for Nearer my God to Thee, their last song.
"Tommy, I'm scared", Margaret cried as they sat in the boat. "Where's Mama and Papa?"
Tommy looked at her and sighed. It wasn't going to be okay anymore. Their mother and father were most likely gone. The ship practically had its bow completely underwater now. A lot of third class passengers were most likely dead.
The passengers around them screamed as they tried to stay in the boat. The ropes were still tied to the grappling hooks. If they weren't cut, the boat was going to go down with the ship with everyone onboard.
"Get me a knife!" one of the officers yelled.
Fabrizio pulled a pocket knife out and helped cut the ropes as fast as he could.
"Fabi!" Tommy yelled reaching out his hand to pull him into the boat.
"Get back!"
Everyone watched as a first class man pushed people away from the boat who were trying to climb on. Tommy recognized that man. He had seen her around Rose and knew just by the way he looked, he was not a good person.
"Get back, you'll swamp us!" he said.
He kicked Tommy and Fabrizio's hands apart. Only a handful of people managed to get into the boat as it floated away from the sinking ship. Everyone screamed in fear as the wires holding up the first funnel on the ship snapped apart.
"Fabrizio!" Tommy yelled.
Fabrizio yelled in fear as the funnel came collapsing, falling on top of him and other passengers, crushing them to death. The wave made by the collapsing funnel sent the boat drifting further away from the ship with its few passengers onboard.
