Chapter twelve
The battle of Sector X: Star Fox vs Star Wolf
(Ten minutes ago)
Lupa O'Donnell sat in her Wolfen watching the Star Fox team do battle with Andrew's minions. Even though she had seen the videos of Star Fox in action before, she had to admit that Fox and his team were much better to see in person. Lupa knew Fox, Falco, Krystal and Miyu from their star fighters and how they flew, but one of the star fighters threw her off, was there someone on the team that she had not heard about?
"Wolf who's the one in the pink star fighter? Is she a part of Star Fox? " She asked.
"Katt Monroe, she's another mercenary. As far as I know but she is not a part of Fox's team but she certainly is around."
Panther let out a low whistle. "It looks as though Slippy has taken some piloting lessons, because he is in rare form today." Down below them one of the Arwings somersaulted over three fighters that were on its tail, chase after his foes and shoot them down with a charge shot then banked sharply left and attacked five more fighters, picking them off one by one from the side before he was even behind them.
Lupa typed a few keys on her console and zoomed in on the only normal Arwing and zoomed in on the cockpit. "That's not Slippy, that's the crazy silver fox from Macbeth!"
Lupa looked down at her console at her older brother. Wolf looked surprised. "So, he survived his injuries. I suppose that's a good thing."
"What do you say that we go and earn our keep?" Lupa Asked.
"Lupa remember this isn't about the money I have a score to settle with him." Wolf said.
Just then, the voice of Andrew came through the speakers.
"They have fallen into our trap! Wolf, bring me the silver fox the Master needs him. Kill the others."
"Copy that Andrew. Let's go to work everyone!"
Lupa powered up her engines and followed her brother it to battle.
(Present time)
Wolf vs Fox
Fox looked upon the arrival of Star Wolf with disappointment and annoyance. Throughout his whole career, on almost every mission, Wolf and his team had been there always trying to take them down and yet even though it bothered him to no end he could never bring himself to break the cycle and kill Wolf. Mostly because he had come to respect Wolf his skill, his tenacity, and his will to prove that he was just as good as Fox was and even though they were rivals, Fox considered Wolf an ally because of the few times they worked together like when the Aparoids invaded.
"Nice to see you Star Wolf. Everyone, pick your targets at will!" Fox shouted.
"I call dibs on the gay Captain Morgan!" Cyrus called out as he boosted to face the foe only to doge an attack from a forth Wolfen. Who the hell was the newbie? Fox put the thought away for later and aimed his Arwing at Wolf's Wolfen and opened fire as he followed Cyrus's lead. Red and blue lasers flew through space, their deadly bite bouncing off their shields.
"Come on, Wolf I thought you were smarter than this. Why the hell are you here? And please don't tell me that Andrew sent you."
As the space between Fox and Wolf closed, Fox tilted his Arwing on its side and banked to his right. Wolf was on his tail in an instant.
"I don't take orders from you Fox and I'm not Andrew's bitch to do his bidding and I'm not doing this money Pup! I'm doing this so I can take you down at last! " Wolf responded and opened fire but Fox somersaulted over him and was on his tail. Fox fired his lasers across Wolf's dorsal shields. Wolf rolled out of the line of fire dove down and u-turned and counter-attacked.
Fox rolled banked to avoid running into Wolf. Damn he gotten better if his here with Andrew, Then this whole thing is a set up! "Wolf you've got to stop this!"
"Not until the Star Fox has fallen to Star Wolf!"Wolf retorted as he swung his Wolfen around for another attack.
"Wolf, this is a trap Andrew is using your ego to his advantage so he can take down two birds with one stone." There was a long pause then he heard Wolf say.
"Let's say you're right about this, what do you want to do about it?"
Fox smiled and related his plan.
Lupa vs Cyrus
Cyrus charged Panther's Wolfen, eager to face off against Panther but suddenly red lasers flashed past his cockpit. Cyrus hit his afterburners and U-turned then banked sharply and spotted a Wolfen bearing a skull and crossed swords coming around for another pass.
"Where did you come from?" Cyrus asked the silence of his cockpit.
"Oh no you don't rookie, Panther is a little too dull for someone like you. I, however, I'm far more of a challenge for someone like yourself."
Cyrus recognized the voice from a few moments ago she had called herself Lupa O'Donnell that meant that she was either his sister, wife, or child either way she was new to the Star Wolf team and had challenged him to a fight. Well if this Lupa O'Donnell wanted a fight, he would give her one but he would refrain from killing her.
"I hope you're ready for a beating, because I won't be playing nice."
"Hit me as hard as you want I can give as good as I get. I'm no shy violet, I'm a hunter!"
Cyrus boosted and banked hard to his right he soon came up on her tail and opened fire. Lupa barrel rolled and somersaulted over Cyrus and returned the favor. Cyrus slammed his brakes so that Lupa flew over his head then chased after her guns blazing. Lupa rolled out of the line of fire and boosted right intending to attack from the outside. Cyrus went after her but Lupa had the advantage of speed so Cyrus flipped a few switches then activated his thrusters so that his Arwing drifted like a car.
Hold...Hold...Hold
His prey was almost in his grasp as his targeting system acquired a lock. Then his cross hairs turned red.
Unleash hell!
Cyrus opened fire on Lupa, completely stopping her attack and forcing her to retreat. But he didn't let up for one second each shot damaged her fighter more. Just a few more hits and she'll be dead in the water. Cyrus thought as he readed a charge shot when suddenly, Lupa's engines and G-Diffuser flashed at the same time forcing Cyrus to look away when he opened his eyes Lupa was gone. Cyrus checked his scanners, but Lupa had just vanished. "There's no way that she could just disappear like tha-" Cyrus stopped as looked up and saw a Wolfen closing in from above. Quick as a whip Cyrus slammed the boost and pulled up shooting past Lupa by mere inches.
The two combatants circled, both sides eager to fight, neither wanting to lose.
"Well you are just full of surprises aren't you silver fox?"
"My name is Cyrus Blaze and you have no idea Mrs. O'Donnell."
She scoffed. "Wolf is not my husband, he's my big brother." Lupa replied with an annoyed tone.
Cyrus was taken aback "Sorry I just assumed that…."
"It's ok, it not common knowledge you know, I've kept most women away from Wolf with that assumption. Well I've enjoyed this little chat but now…."
"I know, well let's continue this little dance."
Krystal vs. Panther
"Krystal my love, it's such a shame that you and I are meeting this way, on the field of battle instead of as lovers in a sweet embrace. My heart aches with a pain that rivals that of Romeo over his lost love; Juliet."
Krystal banked to the left and dove under the wreckage of a destroyed cruiser in hopes of shaking Panther but Panther followed her. Panther Caroso had a reputation for being quite the ladies' man but every time he met up with Krystal he always flattered her with words of love and praised her beauty despite the fact that she was going out with Fox. Sometimes she would flirt back just to make Fox a little jealous.
Krystal flew her Arwing around an engine core and killed power to her engines a moment later Panther flew past her. Krystal reactivated her engines and soon had Panther in her sights and opened fire a moment later Panther's Wolfen was smoking.
"Argh betrayal thy name is Krystal!"
Krystal winced. "Sorry, Panther but love hurts."
Leon vs Falco
Falco banked the Sky Claw left after the Kat's Paw Katt had picked up a few bogies. Flaco shook his head and took them out. Just like old times.
"Beautiful! I could kiss you for that!"
"Save the heroes rewards for later, for now we've got a battle to win." Falco looked down at the image of the pink furred feline on his screen.
Katt looked a little disappointed then grinned and winked at Falco. "Right I'll go help Miyu with taking out enemy reinforcements. Take care of yourself, Little man." She blew him a kiss and then flew away.
As Falco went on his way to find Leon, red lasers flashed from the depths of space Falco barrel rolled then swung his Arwing to face his attacker and returned fire. The star fighters flew straight for each other guns blazing nether pilot willing to back down.
A hundred yards apart.
All right Leon let's go, you and me, to the death. It's time you pay for your sins! Falco thought.
Eighty yards, seventy yards, sixty yards.
"So that is what you want, A little game of chicken? Do you really think you can handle it this time or are you going to run away like a coward like the last time, like the coward you've always been?"
Falco set his jaw and fought to keep his temper in check. Just focus on what you need to do Falco! He thought.
Forty yards, thirty yards. The computers beeped and alarms rang as his shields began to buckle, the glass of his cockpit lit up with warning signs.
"FALCO YOUR ON A COLLISION COURSE PULL OUT NOW OR YOU'LL CRASH!" Katt cried out frantic but Falco ignored her and kept going forward.
Fifteen yards left.
Come on just a little more, just a little more and I'll have you.
When the two foes were less than five yards apart, Leon pulled out but not before Falco scored a few hits on Leon's hull Falco smiled as he heard Leon cursing up a storm, then banked and chased after him. He squeezed the trigger and raked Leon's hull until his Wolfen flew through a wrecked wall of the old space base. Falco relaxed his grip on his controls and smiled.
"Damn you Falco what were you trying to prove?" Katt asked furious then she noticed the look on his face. "Oh so that's what this was about isn't it?"
"It a nan ya Katt! Just do your job and I'll do mine!" He snapped at her.
"What the fuck is your problem? I just want to help you!"
"IT'S NOT YOUR BUSINESS KATT!"
Katt was about to say more when Leon's voice came over the speakers.
"Hee hee ha ha ha! Lookie here, something else I can take from you Falco!"
Leon's Wolfen came screaming out of nowhere and let loose a hail of laser fire not on Falco but on Katt! Katt screamed as Leon's lasers decimated her shields then she boosted off with Leon in hot pursuit laughing like a maniac.
"NO! LEAVE HER ALONE YOU SICK, MURDERING BASTARD!" Falco screamed and slammed his throttle all the way, pushing his engines to the limit. "I WON'T LET YOU TAKE HER AWAY FROM ME LEON!"
Within moments he had caught up with Leon, locked on to him and launched a smart bomb at point-blank range.
Miyu vs The Harbinger
"What the hell was that?" Miyu shouted, as a large red-orange sphere appeared 150 kilometers to aft. "Falco, you ok? That blast was near you and Katt."
Static
"Flaco do you copy? This is Miyu."
Static
"Miyu It's Katt can you see Falco? I can't see him on my scopes!" Katt said, her voice fraught with worry and fear. Miyu checked her scanners.
"There's too much interference. Can anyone else see him?"
"Not real- NO I see him, 35 by 443 looks like he's adrift so is the Wolfen he was fighting." Cyrus reported. "I'm picking up a lot of radiation that is blocking my scans so I can't pick up on any life readings. Wait, I got something I think that they are trying to restart their reactor cores but ARGGGHHH!"
The rest of his transmission was cut off suddenly as Cyrus screamed. Miyu swung her head around and saw what was wrong. In the distance, Cyrus's Arwing was under fire from several fighters that she had never seen before. She turned her Arwing to go to Cyrus aid but she didn't get far before she was under attack herself.
Miyu somersaulted over her foe and was able to catch a glimpse of the fighter that had ambushed her. The fighter had a shiny red hull with black runes the overall shape resembled a scarab beetle with wings that were swept forward and angled in such a way that from the front they resembled the pincers of a beetle, tail fins added a level of intimidation to the strange vessel. The design was angled and slim, chaotic, yet somehow, aerodynamically perfect.
The ship blasted off with a speed that Miyu would have thought impossible she checked her scanners but her readings just bounced of its hull. OK I guess I'll learn about you the hard way. Miyu took off after her prey, firing her lasers every chance she got. Her pray returned the favor, banking sharply to the right then returned fire black lasers raked her shields dropping them to seventy percent!
"OK, so you've got a mean right hook but I can to play rough too!"
Miyu hit her brakes and turned her Arwing after it firing everything she had on her pray blowing it out of the stars. She sat back in her chair and sighed.
Well they are powerful and fast I haven't seen a fighter move that fast before but at their speed could be a problem they're a lot faster than us and they can out maneuver us and outlast us as well. "Fox I've just taken out a bad ass bogie over here and it's not alone. Cyrus needs some back up between them and Lupa he'll have his hands full."
"I can't get to him now Wolf and I have our hands full at the moment. You'll have to get to him somehow Krystal is helping Katt keep these assholes off Falco and Leon. You've got to keep Cyrus safe; Wolf says that Andrew wants him alive for some reason you and Lupa are to make sure that does not happen."
"Damn it Fox I-"
"Attention Fox McCloud and Wolf O'Donnell, now that you are both were I want you to be, its time I tell you what this is. Miyu jumped as Andrew's voice came through her speakers. Had he been here the whole time? If so where was he? It's your final day in this galaxy. Your two teams are obstacles in the plans of my master you, who are symbols of hope for the people of Lylat, and must be destroyed. "
"To that end our royal military releases this weapon of our righteous wrath and indignation, a sword by which we will strike down our foes and reestablish the balance of power in the hands of the ones who deserve to rule! I give to you… Your destruction at the hands of The Harbinger!"
At the end of his speech, hundreds of these scarab-like star fighters appeared from the depths of space firing black bolts of energy on everything that moved. Miyu hit her boost and flew into the fray.
Andrew's trap was, obviously, a well laid one forcing the two teams to go on the defensive. Fox, Wolf and Panther covered the right flank Krystal and Katt along with Falco and Leon attacked the Harbinger fighters coming in from the perimeter hoping to stem the oncoming onslaught while Miyu, Lupa and Cyrus helped wherever they could but the battle, on the whole, was going badly on all fronts there was simply too many of them.
Andrew smiled as he looked at the view screen that was domed like a planetarium, the chaos he had caused with his trap was flawless. All about him, the Arwings and Wolfens darted this way and that attacking, counter-attacking doing their best to survive. He rose from his command chair and tapped the shoulder of the feline ensign at conn. "Turn it up, I want to hear their screams. Theirs are the cries that all of Lylat will hear then once they have seen the fall of Star Fox Lylat will bow down in fear to me."
The ensign did as he was told and Andrews smile broadened at what he heard and his eyes sparkled as they swept around the view screen.
"Miyu, Cyrus I need you two at grid 2219!" Fox said as he took out three more fighters.
"GET OUT OF MY WAY LEON! THIS IS NO TIME TO BE SHOWING OFF!" Falco barked as his Arwing collided with Leon's Wolfen.
"MY FLYING IS FINE BUT YOUR FLYING IS ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS FALCO! WHAT'S THE MATTER CAN'T HANDLE THE PRESSURE?!"
"KNOCK IT OFF YOU TWO! WE ARE ABOUT TO DIE AND ALL YOU CAN DO IS BICKER?" Katt shouted angrily.
"Enemy Fighters coming in bearing 378 by 45!" Wolf reported, his voice had a faint note of fear.
As the battle dragged on and it became that Star Fox and Star Wolf were going to meet their doom a crazed laugh escaped his throat. "AT LONG LAST I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE AGAINST YOU FOX MCCLOUD, HAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Then something happened that Andrew did not account for, as he watched his forces come closer and closer to taking down Star Fox and his former teammates, a large wall of orange lit up the view screen. Andrew fell to the deck as his ship was rocked by shock waves. As he picked himself up Andrew shouted. "Status report, someone tell me what that was now!"
A Hyena pulled himself up to a console his fingers flew over the keys. "My lord our fighters are falling like flies. I'm picking up two star fighters coming in from the outside of the battle zone." A moment later proximity alarm went off, "Incoming missile strike brace for impact!" A moment later a series of explosions rocked the ship, consoles and power conduits blew apart, alarms screeched as fires started.
Andrew slowly sat up his mind was spinning but his eyesight was fine thanks to the Gift from his master looking about him he saw that most of his crew were dead, others were struggling to get to their feet so they could fight the fires or assess the damage of the ship. "My lord Andrew, are you alright?" Andrew turned his head and saw the young face of his aid June Toriyama, a female pine marten that was loyal to his cause.
"Your Highness, are you alright?" She asked again her voice filled with fear.
"I'm fine June report."
"We've hit by a type four cluster missile are weapons array has been damaged beyond repair as well as our slipstream drive and to make matters worse the cloaking device is failing."
"What about the Chaos Fountain, can we call for more fighters?"
"Unknown."
"Set a course for the warp gate, and get the Fountain online."
(Five minutes ago)
Fox shot down a group of Harbinger fighter that was on Falco's tail then gripped his control sticks as his Arwing took another hit four more enemy fighters hopped on his tail. Shit these guys are like the Hydra, you take one down two take its place, He looked down at his shield gauge and ship readout, Damn I'm at 35% and my hull is pretty weak from the pounding I've got. Could this really be the end, no I've got to stay focused there is always a way out. But deep in his heart he felt that this could be the end this is how it was going to end, he had walked into a trap and brought everyone down with him. Some leader I turned out to be.
Suddenly the fighters ceased firing and a shadow flew over his head. Fox looked up and saw a tadpole looking star fighter taking out the enemy like they were flies, in the distance he saw Slippy's stout Arwing, The Bullfrog, attacking from the outside. In the distance Great Fox II Was launching missiles at the enemy.
"Sorry we're late, but we couldn't wait to spoil your fun, cheap-shooting ass-kissing sons of bitches!" Fox smiled as Roxy continued her stream of insults and foul names. Through the speakers of his comm Fox could hear both teams cheering like crazy as swarms of cluster missiles took down the enemy.
"Roxy your timing is perfect!" Fox said.
"All according to plan right Fox?" Amanda asked
"Not quite Amanda, Andrew pulled a fast one on us something I should have expected and all of us have suffered for it."
"Location confirmed, sending supplies." R.O.B 64 said.
Great Fox II launched another missile strike upon Andrews forces, as they came in one of the missiles broke away from the group then split apart in to smaller missiles, flew after the Star Fox team and exploded in front of them leaving a gold shield ring that for them to fly through.
With their shields restored Fox and the others dropped shield rings of Wolf and his team then took the fight to the enemy turning the tide in their favor.
Cyrus was in the middle of driving back Harbinger fighters when a blip on his radar caught his attention it looked like a ship of some sort.
"Fox I'm picking up some strange readings is sector 335. I think it could be some kind of ship."
"I recognize the engine signature it's Andrews yacht, the son of a bitch has been here the whole time waiting for us to die!" Wolf growled.
"Falco, Miyu, Cyrus follow that bastard don't let him escape no matter what!"
"With pleasure Fox!" Cyrus replied and followed Falco and Miyu to the old space station. In a few moments, they saw a domed ship dock with the transport shuttle then took off as fast it could.
"Stop right there Andrew, you are captured."
"Not quite Star Fox if you want to take me in you'll have to catch me first!"
"What is this, a 70's Saturday morning cartoon?" Falco asked, "Quit messing around and catch him!"
As the trio closed in on the shuttle, the base's old security system activated. "Watch your starboard Cyrus, the walls move in this section of the base." Just as they passed through the gap the wall on the right extended suddenly, forcing Cyrus to hit his brakes and roll out of the way. "Thanks Falco, I guess I owe you." Cyrus said sheepishly.
The further they went, the more complex the barricades became appearing in groups of three or four doors. After that, there were doors that opened and shut waiting to smash any star fighter in half if they did not time their approach just right, which was mere child's play for them but the fun unexpectedly came to an end. As they entered the center of the base a laser bolt shot out and blew off one of the Sky claws wings!
"AAH Son of a oh man I'm gonna have to back off!"
"Falco you won't be able to get out of here with that wing gone. Cyrus, go after Andrew I'll tow Falco out of here and then I'll be back to back you up."
"Copy that Miyu!"
Cyrus hit his boost and went after Andrew's ship, firing his lasers. "Just give it up already Andrew. It's over!"
HA HA HA HA! That so well then which is more important to you Cyrus Blaze? Your ticket home or your friends?"
Suddenly he sensed fear and surprise from Miyu and Falco he looked down at the radar and saw that some Harbinger fighters had suddenly appeared and were attacking his teammates!
"So what's it going to be Cyrus?"
"You are such a coward Andrew! I will get you for this next time." Cyrus growled as he U-turned to help his friends while Andrew laughed mockingly at him.
"Picking on little me? A very bad idea!" Miyu said as the Harbinger fighters hammered her vessel.
"Hang on Miyu, I got you covered!" Cyrus fired a charge shot whipping out her foes on her back.
"Thanks Cyrus but I had them where I wanted. Wait what about Andrew?"
"He got away, I'm sorry."
"Hey don't be you did the right thing."
"All aircraft report! Is everyone ok?" Fox asked.
"Nothing a few hours in a tub won't fix! Andrew has gotten rather bloodthristy." Krystal said
"I'd like to know who is funding him!" Katt said
"Yeah and who built those fighters?" Miyu asked.
"Don't worry Slippy's here! I'll gather hull samples. "
"See my ship? DOES IT LOOK OK TO YOU?" Falco asked furiously
"Humph Ruffians are a pain." Amanda said.
"I'm ok, where did Wolf and his lackey's go?" Cyrus asked.
In the main hanger bay of Great Fox Star Wolf was getting ready to depart for Sargasso hideout. Wolf was about to climb into the cockpit of his Wolfen when he saw Fox hurrying over.
"This doesn't change a thing Fox! Remember Star Wolf will be one to take you down!" Wolf threatened.
"Wolf you can't go out there on your own you and your team won't last long if those things come back. Think of your sister."
Wolf jumped down to the deck and glared at Fox. "I am once we make it back to Sargasso, my team and I are going under ground with a little luck Andrew won't find us."
"That's not good enough!" Fox Shouted. "Please, Stay with us you'll be better off here with my team."
"NO! You saw what happened today Fox and if you smart you'll do what I'm doing and run at least you've got Peppy to cover you ass."
Fox thew up his hands and groaned. It was worse than arguing with Falco. "Fine I guess I'll see you in Hell Wolf, because I can't run from this! Because if I do then there really is no hope and if there is no hope Lylat will fall and I'd rather die fighting to save my home like I've always done then cower in fear! So go ahead and run it's what you do best!"
Fox turned on his heel and walked away.
"FOX!" Wolf called. Fox turned around.
"What?!"
"Thanks." Wolf said simply.
"Take care Wolf."
With nothing more to say Star Wolf took off in to the depths of space. Fox watched them go, hoping that they would make it.
