Chapter 16

Showdown at Sector Z.

Bill Gray banked his Cornerian fighter left with Husky unit and into the hanger of the Cornerian flagship Excalibur. The mark III Cruiser was Fifty-eight deck ship 9883.7 ft long 3325.5 ft wide and was built for either long range or close range ship to ship combat and could carry at least 150 starfighters of all classes and carry over 6,400 troops. After his squad checked in that they had docked, he opened the cockpit, climbed out, and looked around for his second in command, Ginger Monch, a young female boxer hound mix of twenty-four years old and she was in command of Bulldog unit not seeing her Bill made his way to the A.I. holo- projector. Over the last decade the CDF had installed A.I.s in the ships mainframes for faster access to information and to represent the intelligence of the main computer. "Merlin are you awake?" A moment later the holographic figure of a pale blue husky appeared in scholar's robes.

"Hello Commander Gray and since I am the main computer I am always awake in a manner of speaking."

Bill smiled. "Good my squad and I just arrived I saw and I was just wondering where the rest of the fleet is. There weren't many ships out there."

Merlin tilted his head looking thoughtful. "One moment. The rest of the fleet will be here at 1730. The ships joining us out here include The Bonaparte, The Oum, The Integrity, The Isuzu, The Tibias, and The Melbourne, our Armada will be up to 40 ships plus a few Merc units have been called in."

Bill nodded his head. "Has Fox McCloud has been called in?"

"I do not have any information on the Star Fox team."

"Thanks Merlin."

Merlin nodded his head then deactivated, Bill turned to go and noticed Fay talking to Ginger he smiled and tried to leave but Fay spotted him. "BILLY! Don't go I just met your new second in command. She has been telling me what a great teacher you are."

Bill turned back to see Fay and Ginger approaching him, Fay was wearing her pink and white flight suit but today she was wearing her pink exo-boots. Ginger wore the yellow and green flight suit that was the standard for all Cornerian pilots she had removed her helmet and let her neck long earth brown hair fall in its slightly bouncy curls. Her milk chocolate brown eyes were merry with teenage excitement despite her being twenty-nine years old. He smiled glad that the two of them were getting along so well. "I'm lucky to have her on my side. How have you been have you heard from Miyu at all?"

Fay was about to reply but suddenly Merlin's' voice came over the speakers. "Warp gate signature detected. Cornerian Assault Carrier inbound, Five Arwings inbound. Great Fox II confirmed all hands on deck the Star Fox team has arrived."

Bill and the others turned around in time to see eight Arwings fly into the hanger bay one was an Interceptor class with green G-diffusers. The moment Fay saw it she took off fast as a comet shouting. "Miyu Miyu! Your back, get out of that ship now and give me a hug!" She jumped up and down trying to get up on the fuselage. "Fay get down you psycho bitch I can't hug you if you I fall off my baby here." Miyu climbed out of the cockpit, jumped to the deck, and hugged Fay as if she was her sister that had not seen each other for ages.

Ginger shook her head in amazement she could not believe her eyes standing before her here were living legends, The heroes of Lylat, The Star Fox team her inspiration for joining the Military granted is was not the team lead by James McCloud but they were the legends never the less. Her mind shut down, she felt like her legs were going to give out and she grasped Bill's arm for support.

Bill smiled. "Would you like to meet them? I'm sure Fox would love to meet you." All Ginger could do was nod her head in reply. Bill and Ginger made their way to the team Ginger saw each teammate Slippy Toad the engineer, Amanda the compassionate doctor, the beautiful and kind Krystal, Falco Lombardi cocky ace, Fox McCloud the fearless leader, and an unknown silver fox? Both Ginger and Bill stopped dead in their tracks at the sight of this new comer.

Fox saw Bill and smiled. "Bill glad to see you made it! Get over here I have someone I want you and Fay to meet." The three of them came over and Fox beckoned Cyrus over. "Fay, Bill this is Cyrus Blaze. He was the guy that saved our butts on Katina months ago. Cyrus this is Bill Gray my best friend and college," he gestured to the Bulldog, then a then to a white furred spaniel "and Fay Spaniel." Cyrus shook hands with both Bill and Fay. "It's an honor to meet you Fox and the others have told me so much about you."

"It's nice to meet you too. Wait a moment, are you the one that was in the Landmaster at Katina a few month ago?" Fay asked looking Cyrus up and down, "because if you were, thank you Bill and I never would have made it off of Katina without you and you saved my best friend Miyu on Macbeth."

"That was me and you are welcome." Cyrus said smiling then he turned to the other canine. "I'm Cyrus Blaze."

"Nice to meet you I'm Ginger Monch Bill's second in command and the head of Huskey unit. Forgive me but you are new to the team am I correct?"

"All pilots please report to the battle rooms one, two, and four, for mission briefing."

"Looks like we are going to have to continue this later it seems." Cyrus said with a frown. "It was nice to meet you Ginger."

"It was an honor to meet you all I look forward to fighting alongside you all in the battle."

The Battle room was about the size of a small theater with a large holo-projector in the center off the room. The room was filled with merc pilots and military pilots from other ships on the ground floor, General Peppy Hare and two other Generals from the Command Counsel called the briefing to order. "The enemy has made a critical error and the time to end this war has now come. As most of you know, part of our fleet has engaged Andrews's fleet at the binary stars, Solar and Lylat. While this information this is true, it is merely a smoke screen so Andrew would stretch himself out. By the time Andrew realizes his mistake the news of his defeat will force their surrender. " Said Peppy simply. This statement caused a ripple of confusion to roll through the crowd.

Peppy raised his hands. "Quite please, Andrew has sent a large number of his forces to combat our Fleet and has left his Star base, his still undeveloped weapon and, more importantly, Andrew unprotected. Thanks to the Star Fox Team, We now know what they are up to and how we can stop him. General Monroe and General Dulor have outlined our Strategy. General Monroe Please step forward."

Peppy stepped back and let a palomino Equine male step forward wearing a red and gold uniform. General Monroe activated the holo display a large orange and yellow Z hovered in the air with small red ships in front of it and a large red loop or ring behind them. "As you all can see the enemy has set themselves around the weapon in a large full-scale assault. As such we will attack in three-pronged attack, Peppy will attack on the starboard flank I will attack the port flank. This will hopefully will weaken the center enough for Dulor to attack and break through the center. While the two of us fight on the outside Dulor will lead an attack on the Maga cruiser by the ring. General Dulor."

A red Panda in maroon and silver uniform approached and changed the display. Mary Dulor was Peppey's second in command and in charge of ground forces and soldiers. "Those who are assigned to me we are going after the Chaos Fountain. Although it is not yet operational it is protected by an energy shield that is controlled from the Mega Cruisers." Around the Ring shimmered with a yellow light. "The shield must be deactivated before we can destroy it and the Fountain destroyed before it becomes active otherwise, we will be defeated and Lylat will fall. Once my fleet is through the heavy cruisers will give our fighters and our gunships covering fire while we fly into the Cruiser and destroy the shield generator once the shield is down our Bomber Arwings will fly to the fountain and blow it up."

Peppy and Monroe took their place by Dulors' side. "We won't have long we must attack while we have the chance the battle will commence at 0500 hours synchronize the watches for Operation Downfall. Dissmised."

Cyrus tossed back and forth in his bed restlessly. Ever since the mission briefing there had been a large pit of fear growing in his chest and took away any hope of getting sleep his mind swirled with fear and doubt and he was still unsure about what he was going to do tomorrow with access to the Chaos Fountain he had a way home but if what Amanda said was true and he was changing, exposing himself to more of the Cha`has' power could make him worse when he got home. On the other hand, if he stayed he would have his dream job and a new home he could finally live his life as his wanted to and not worry about what his dad would say. Sighing he got up and took a walk around the ship till he got to the hanger bay. He sat down on a lift lock, closed his eyes, and reached out with his mind to feel what the other troops in the fleet felt.

What he felt didn't surprise him there was fear but there was also confidence and pride that they were going to win. He lowered his circle to the team. Krystal was meditating he could feel her tranquil mind doing the same as he was, Falco and Katt minds a flame with thoughts of passion and….well he moved on. Sippy and Amanda were worried but happy to be with each other on this night and Fox was….

"You can't sleep either?" Fox stood by him. "You seem worried Cyrus."

"I am…..it's my first battle on this scale."

"I know that's why I am here." He sat by his young friend who smiled at the vulpine.

"So touring the ship?"

"It's an Old custom for captains to tour their ships before a battle. Hopeless or not I mean Pepper toured his ship when the Apparoids invaded."

"But it was his last battle."

Fox chuckled. "True but it was won he is still alive. So what is bothering you, Cyrus?"

Cyrus looks back at the stars then sighs. "I am too afraid to go home and too afraid to stay."

Fox nods. "The fear of growing up and being an adult or a Fear of Falling back into a semblance of the old rut?" he sits with him. "I can understand your problem."
Cyrus looks at his friend. "You don't understand I-I'm their last son I can't just leave them, it... would destroy my whole family if I disappear like this."
Fox sat beside the young human-looking thoughtful. "All I can say is this. It's not good to waste your life living in and chasing the memories of you past. If all you are going to do is live a life that never changes that is without risk or lives up to misguided goals that you have made for yourself just to keep others happy, you only end up hurting yourself and all you care about. We are made to grow beyond the childhood and be our own person not some grown up child, not a carbon copy of our parents' lives or what they want us to be." He looks knowingly at Cyrus who blushed and looked away. "I know you will be fine either way. So don't worry. Now it's time to head to go bed"

Cyrus nods and follows them casting one last look at the stars as they board the lift.

The next morning Cyrus got dressed in his flight gear and arms himself with his Blade and his blasters. He looks at his room one last time then left and began his walk to the hanger along the way his mind turned to memories of all he had done on the ship a conduit he helped repair, the crawl space where he saw Katt and Krystal. It seemed so long ago now. As he walked Falco joins him a little way later Katt falls in then Slippy Fox and finally Krystal. He looks around at his new friends Feeling a sense of family in with them despite being human and them Anthros smiles ready to fight with them. Fox steps up the pace and soon they all are running side by side to the hanger bay. In the hanger, they boarded their Arwings, as Cyrus came to his Fox called him over to his fighter. "I want you to fly mine. I will fly the Arwing II."

"Fox I…"

Fox looked in his young eyes. "Please, I insist." Cyrus blinks and smiles as he nods. "I would be honored, Fox." He took his place in the cockpit. Once they were all in palace Roxy's voice chimed in their headsets. "Ok everyone it's time to attack. Come back in one peace guys we will back you up as best we can. Now go Win for us!"

"RIGHT!" they reply as they flew into space.

In space there was a deep calm one that gave small comfort to Cyrus as he and the Star Fox team skimmed the hull of a Cornerian battle carrier flying in sync with the others until they dive over the side of its port bow and into the fray. "Remember we are with Dulors Attack force. We follow her in and move with the troops to Destroy the shields Don't get side tracked." Fox looked at his HUD then lead them into the battle. It was absolute chaos. The fighters of both sides of this war engaged in epic battle it was clear Andrew had been taken by surprise but he wasn't going down without a fight. Andrews fleet had moved up to engage Peppy's forces but his fleet was spread too thin as he had fallen for the bluff. To make up for this he had his carriers send out all fighters, mechs, and battle armors to out maneuver and pin the larger Cornerian cruisers and Carriers in place. The Husky and Bulldog units lead the counter attack to hold off the enemy fighters. Fox smiled as his team came in. "Let's back them up the squadron. Star Blitz formation!" The Arwings scattered and attacked from multiple angles slowing down the attacks of the enemy and giving a little headway for the CDF to advance.

"YEAH EAT MY LASERS YOU SON OF A BITCH!" Cyrus shouted as he chased down a mech blasting its shield off and blowing out of the stars. "Miyu cut to the right there's a Squad at 306."

"I'm on the leader keep you nose up kid, I don't want to come back for you."

"Keep up hun! its going to be a long fight!"

The battle was bitter. For hours the two powers fought in a titanic struggle to gain any advantage over the other both sides knowing fighting to control the fate of Lylat but little did they know that there was more at stake than one system, no this battle would decide the fate worlds beyond worlds. On the bridge of the Excalibur Peppy Hare looked at the mega cruiser all around him reports of the battle poured in. Suddenly Merlin materialized before him. "Sir scanners indicate the rebels are powering up the Chaos fountain. They are somehow using the nebula as fuel to give it energy." He said in a cool calm voice. Peppy stood to his feet and shouted. "Contact Dulor, it's time to begin the attack. To all ships PRESS THE ATTACK ON THE POINTS!"

Fox chased three Invader class fighters around the hull of a Cornerian Frigate when the call came. "All wings to the rally point it's time to begin the attack on The Poison Vengeance!"

"I'm on my way!" Falco said.

"Katt is standing by"

One by one the team rallies as Dulors' Defense Class Arwing took point. "Commander Gray from up Bulldog and Huskey units behind us please. All troop transports fall in now."

"We're on your Tail General. All wings go to attack mode now." All Arwings set the wings to the swept back attack position as they moved closer to the mega cruiser. As the attack force closed in they saw a massive ring in space starting to glow with an unholy red glow that sent a shiver to the souls. Fox looked at his HUD and saw a sea of red dots. "Incoming Contacts Dead ahead of us and closing!" Over the radio, he heard Cyrus chuckle. "Here's where the fun begins."

"Let them pass between us. Commander Gray Cover us!" Dulor shouted as the fighters attacked the comms were a mess of chatter and static as the battle began, here and there fighters exploded fox ground his teeth but it was Cyrus that said what he felt. "I'm going back to help them I'll catch up."

"Cyrus stop! Bill and his Squad are doing their mission so we can do ours!" Fox said and looks at the goal beside him he sees Cyrus return to formation then he looks up. "CONTACT ABOVE US THEY ARE COMING FORM ABOVE!"

Fox looks up. "Shit Assault Drones All Star Fox team members! Flank and cover the General and the Troops!" he pulls up and opens fire and took out four of the drones as his team closed in the sides but there were too many of them some slipped past and went for the troops and the General! "NO!" Fox yelled trying to reach them. "IM NOT GOING TO MAKE IT!"

"Looks like you could use some help fox." Green lasers blasted the drones out of the stars and Bills fighter sails by. "Nice work Bill you the man!"

"Well done Commander now ever one full speed ahead!" Dulor said as she boosted ahead as the squad follows.
