Jamie picked up the big box and turned to exit the room, he almost ran into Danny.
"Watch it kid."
"Maybe you should watch it." Danny chuckled and gave Jamie a small nudge. Jamie rolled his eyes and headed towards the stairs. He couldn't see around the box so he felt for the stairs with his feet. He slowly made is way down. He was half way down when his foot landed on a stray toy that one of the boys had left behind. The toy slipped of the stairs, causing Jamie to lose his footing. He tried to regain his balance, but failed. He tumbled down the rest of the stairs. On the way down he lost the box he was holding. In that moment, he was glad that the box only contained books, so nothing would break on the tumble, but that thought quickly exited his mind as he landed on the ground and the heavy box landed on his chest. The wind was knocked out of him. For a second, time seemed to slow, until his lungs were able to pulled precious air back in. He felt little aches, but nothing major, so he thought he had gotten out of it with minimal damage.
Jamie heard someone running down the stairs, the box was lifted off his chest and Danny reached a hand out to him. Jamie took it and got to his feet, but as soon as he put weight on his right leg, he crumpled back to the floor in pain. He pulled his pant leg up, to show bruising on his calf. He looked up at Danny.
"I think it's broken." Danny kneeled down next to Jamie and gently touched his leg. He pushed a little and Jamie howled in pain.
"Yeup, seems broken." Danny stood and called for Linda. She came quickly from the kitchen. Her eyes instantly went to Jamie's leg.
"Oh my." She kneeled next to him. "I think you'll need and x-ray." Jamie groaned.
"I hate hospitals." Linda laughed.
Together Danny and Linda helped Jamie to the car. Linda placed pillows under Jamie's leg and told him not to move it. Jamie nodded. At the hospital, a couple of nurses took Jamie into the exam room. One checked Jamie's leg and the other informed Jamie as to what was going to happen. They wheeled Jamie to the radiology unit and helped him onto the table.
Jamie lay on the cold table, holding perfectly still and waiting for them to get the x-rays they needed.
Linda and Danny talked quietly as they waited for Jamie to be done. The doors opened and Jamie came out, leaning on a pair of crutches. He was sporting a fresh cast on his right leg.
Danny and Linda stood and walked to him.
"How long do you have to keep it?"
"6 weeks minimum." Jamie sounded mad.
"6 Weeks of desk duty." Jamie rolled his eyes.
"And I can't drive." Danny wrapped an arm around Jamie.
"That's ok kid. I'm here for you." Jamie smiled and nudged Danny.
