Danny laughed as Jamie bent down next to Jack and helped him saw at the tree. This year Danny wanted to cut down a real tree and bring it home. Jamie begged to come, because they hadn't cut down a tree since he was a little toddler.
So here they were. Linda, Danny, and Sean watched as Jamie and Jack began the processes of cutting down the Christmas tree. Jamie seemed more excited than Jack. Danny laughed. The day was perfect, everyone was happy, nothing could go wrong. After Jamie helped Jack start cutting the tree, he stood a came by Danny. Jamie gave Sean a gentle shove and told him to go help. At first they were working in harmony, but then they began to fight over the saw. Jamie stepped him quickly and tried to get them to stop arguing. As he approached, Sean had managed to rip the saw from Jack's grip and spun around with it. The saw bit into Jamie's flesh and he cried out in pain. Sean instantly dropped the saw and held back tears as Jamie fell to the ground. Danny and Linda ran to Jamie's side. Danny gently rolled him over. Jamie was holding his left arm close to his chest.
"Let me see, kid." Jamie held him arm out and winced. There was a deep cut from his elbow to his wrist and it was bleeding really badly. Linda took off her scarf and started tying it around Jamie's arm. He bit back screams as she pulled it tight. The white material quickly turned red and Linda instantly knew that the wound was bad.
Jack and Sean both sat as still as stone. They had caused this to their Uncle, it was their fault. They looked at each other and broke out in tears.
"An ambulance will take too long to get here. We need to take him ourselves." Danny nodded.
"Call the hospital and let them know, we're coming in." Linda pulled out her phone and made the call. Danny knelled down next to Jamie. His eyes were drooping and he was fighting to stay conscious. "Hey kid. I know it's hard, but I need you to stay awake. You've lost a lot of blood." Jamie nodded weakly.
Together Linda and Danny half carried half drug Jamie to the car. Linda motioned for the boys to come. As they climbed in, she assigned them a special task.
"I need you two, to kept Jamie awake, ok?" They both nodded. Danny sped towards the hospital as fast as the icy roads would let him. When they were only five minutes away. Jack yelled from the backseat.
"Uncle Jamie, won't wake up." Danny pushed harder on the gas petal.
Jamie was whisked away when they arrived at the hospital. Danny paced as Linda tried to figure out how Jamie was doing. Jack and Sean sat in the corner of the waiting room, with guilt filled hearts. Danny looked over at his sons and stopped pacing. He walked over to them. They looked up when Danny stopped in front of them.
"It's our fault dad." Danny's heart melted. He felt sorry for his boys because he knew what it felt like to be guilty for the injury of a loved one. Danny kneeled down.
"The best thing to take from this situation is..." Sean looked Danny in the eyes.
"Never play with anything sharp?"
"work together not against each other?"
"You're both right."
"Danny." He stood and faced Linda.
"Jamie is going to be fine. They stitched him up and put him on some pain killers. We can take him home. Just have to watch for an infection." Just then Jamie walked through the door, into the waiting room. Jack and Sean jumped up and ran to give Jamie a hug.
"We're sorry Uncle Jamie!"
"Yea. We didn't realize our actions were dangerous." Both boys looked at Jamie with love in their eyes. Jamie kneeled down to their level.
"You boys are the best nephews an uncle could have."
