Jamie pulled his coat closer to his chest as a freezing gust of wind blew past him. He was on his way home and he couldn't wait to curl up in his warm blankets with the heater on. Jamie stopped at the corner and waited for the signal to walk. A couple people stopped next to him, but he only noticed the little boy standing next to him. The boy was in short sleeve shirt and a pair of pants. His shoes had holes and he was almost blue from the cold. Jamie bent down next to the kid, he looked about 13. The boy was shivering.
"Hi, My name is Officer Jamie Reagan. What is your name?"
"J-Jacob a-Andrews"
"Where's your jacket, Jacob?"
"I gave it to my little brother. He needs it more than I do."
"How come your brother doesn't have his own jacket?"
"Daddy doesn't have the money for one, because Mommy is in the hospital." Jamie's heart sank for the kid.
"Here have mine." Jamie shrugged of his jacket and placed it around the thin boy's shoulders.
"Thank you." Jamie thought for a second and then had an idea.
"Why don't you come with me to the store and then I'll bring you home."
"I'm not supposed to go anywhere with a stranger." Jamie pulled out his badge and handed it to Jacob.
"Here is proof that I'm a police officer. It is my job to keep people like you safe." The boy nodded and took Jamie's hand. Jamie led the way to a near-by clothing store. There he bought the boy a jacket and a new pair of shoes, then he bought Jacob's little brother shoes and a jacket." The boy was very grateful and kept telling Jamie thank you.
Jamie walked the boy home and gave Jacob's fathers his card. He told him to call if he needed anything.
Present Day
Jacob watched an officer hit the ground. People started running away from the gunfire, but Jacob ran towards the fallen cop. He thought that he had seen the man's face and he looked familiar. As Jacob approached he could see blood being to soak the white snow. He stepped closer and saw the man's face. He fell to his knees in sorrow. Flashbacks to the night that Jamie had bought him a coat and shoes, bombarded him. Tears sprung to his eyes. The man who had inspired Jacob to become a police officer, lay bleeding out in front of him. He made eye contact with Jamie and knew that Jamie recognized him. Jacob smiled and grabbed Jamie's hand.
"You're going to be alright." Jamie began to shiver and Jacob stripped off his coat and placed it over Jamie.
"I-I see y-you're s-still g-giving your j-jacket away?" Jacob smiled sadly.
"You need it more than I do." When the ambulance arrived he was pushed out of the way. Jacob went home that night wondering if Jamie was going to make it. He stay up all night worrying. In the morning he got a call. His caller ID said Reagan, so he answered it.
"Hello?"
"Is this Jacob Andrews?"
"Yes."
"This is Danny Reagan. I am Jamie Reagan's brother. He wanted me to call you and tell you that he is going to be alright." Jacob sighed in relief. "I would also like to thank you for being by my brother's side last night. He means the world to me." Jacob understood that feeling as he looked over at his little brother eating breakfast.
"Thank you for calling and tell Jamie thank you for me." Jacob hung up the phone and went to give his little brother a big hug.
