The sun was hot on his back as Jamie walked behind Danny and Joe. They were walking to the corner store by their house. Their mother had given each of them a dollar and told them to go buy something cold. They all happily took the money and left the house. They were told to hurry because their father was almost off work and he would be home soon.
The trio made their way to the store. The store was nice and cool inside, compared to the scorching heat outside. When they went in they all went to the soda machine. Joe and Danny were laughing with each other. Jamie looked back at the door when someone walked through. The man wore all black and Jamie could see a gun sticking out of the back of his pants. He grabbed Danny's arm, trying to get his attention. Danny turned and met Jamie's wide eyes.
"What?" Jamie pointed to the man, right as he did, the man pulled his gun an pointed it at the cashier.
"Put all the money in the bag." The cashier was a teenage girl. She jumped and started to fill the bag. Danny grabbed his brothers and pulled him to the ground. They hide behind the candy display. Danny thought that they would be safe, but the man started walking around the store. The boys sat very still, but the man still found them. "What do we have here." Danny placed himself in front of his brother's. "Stand up, all of you!" They all stood.
Sirens blared and the man turned to the cashier with an angry look.
"Now look what you did. You alerted the cops," he turned back to the boys. "That means on of you gets to come with me." The man looked at all of them and his eyes landed on Jamie. "You." He reached out to grab him but Danny slapped his hand away. "Move it boy." The man shoved Danny to the ground. Joe stepped between the man and Jamie.
"Leave him alone, take me instead." The man chuckled a little.
"You'll fight too much." He then shove Joe to the ground and grabbed Jamie. Jamie struggled against the iron grip around his arm. His eyes pleaded for Danny to help. Danny jumped up and stopped dead in his tracks. The gun was pressed against Jamie's head.
"Move and he dies." Tears sprung to Danny's eyes. He looked at Jamie. Danny could tell he was scared, but he seemed to be keeping in together. The man drug Jamie with him as he exited the store, with the bag of money over his shoulder. When he was outside, many cop cars surrounded the building. The man stopped moving and pulled Jamie closer. He pushed the gun to Jamie's head again. Officer's started yelling for him to drop the gun. The man just stood there and threaten to kill Jamie if they came any closer. Jamie's heart was beating so hard, he thought that it would break through his chest. Suddenly, a single shot echoed through the air. Jamie waited for the pain, when none came he opened his eyes and watched as the man fell to the ground.
Joe and Danny burst through the doors and pulled Jamie into a hug. They all cried together. They looked up when a car came to a screeching halt. Apparently, one of the officers had recognized the Regan boys and had called Frank. They ran to their Dad and accepted his embrace.
Jamie no longer felt scared, he had his family and they were all ok.
