"Leave me alone, Danny!" Jamie stormed out of the house with Danny hot on his heels. Jamie wiped tears out of his eyes angrily.
"What is the baby going to cry?" Jamie walked down the steps and on the sidewalk. Danny grabbed him. "Jamie."
"I said leave me alone!" Jamie tried to squirm free. Danny just tightened his shirt.
"You know I care about you right?"
"Then why do you always laugh at me and make fun of what I do?" Danny lightened his grip.
"I don't."
"Yes you do, Danny. Why do you think I never told you."
"Jamie, I'm proud of you for wanting to go to college, I'm just mad that you didn't tell me you wanted to go so far away."
"Maybe it's because I want to get as far away from you as possible." Jamie shoved Danny off of him and stepped off the curb without looking. Danny huffed and turned around to head back inside. He froze when he heard screeching tires. Danny spun around and watched as Jamie rolled over the top of a car and landed in a heap. The driver was shocked, and then sped off. Danny ran to his brother's side.
"Jamie?" He was bleeding from a head wound, and purple bruises were already starting to form. Danny started calling for his mom and Joe.
Joe ran out of the house and stopped dead on the porch. He ran back in the house, and came back out seconds later with his mom and a phone. As Joe talked frantically into the phone, while Mary made her way to Jamie. She kneeled next to him.
"Jamie baby, can you hear me?" She fought back tears.
"n-not a b-baby." His response was weak, but he was still conscious.
"You will always be my baby." She ran her hands through his hair, trying to comfort him.
"It h-hurts, Mom."
"I know baby, the ambulance is on its way." Joe sat down next between Danny and his mom. They each took turns talking to Jamie and trying to keep him awake.
Erin walked down the street with a couple of her friends, she was about a block from her house when and ambulance blew past them. Normally, she didn't care much when one went by. But something in her gut told her that this ambulance was important. She watched it until it came to a stop in front of her house. She broke into a run, leaving her friends confused on the street. She only stopped running when she saw the small huddle of people in the street. She saw Danny, Joe, and her mom. So that meant that the one hurt was...
"Jamie!" She ran to her mother's side, tears already in her eyes. "Mom, what happened?" Mary rose and wrapped her daughter in a hug. Soon, Danny and Joe joined the hug. The paramedics loaded Jamie into the ambulance and sped away. Mary pulled car keys from her pocket and ushered everyone to the car.
Danny paced the waiting room, guilt radiating inside him. Joe and Erin sat in the corner whispering quietly. Mary stood still and watched the emergency room door, waiting for any kind of news. Frank ran into the waiting room and startled the whole family.
"I just got the message. Any news?" Mary just shook her head. She had been so strong the past few hours, and seeing Frank had taken all her strength away. She burst into tears and crumpled in his arms. Frank held her as she cried. Joe and Erin, seeing their mom fall apart, made them start crying too. Danny continued to pace and let the guilt eat at him. He was still pacing, when his mom and dad sat down. Suddenly, like a wave, the guilt overtook him and he sank to his knees. Mary jumped from her seat and placed a gentle hand on Danny's back. he kept his head down.
"It's my fault, Mom. We were fighting and he pulled away from me. If...if..." Mary placed a hand under Danny's chin and force him to look at her.
"Accidents happen, Danny. That's why they are call accidents." Danny started to cry and Mary pulled him into a hug. They sat there for a minute, until Mary pulled Danny to his seat and led him to a chair.
Two hours had passed since they were told to wait here for news. Danny grew more and more worried with every passing hour. Finally, the emergency room door opened and an older doctor walked out.
"Jameson Reagan?" The family stood. He walked to them. "Jameson..."
"Jamie." Danny corrected. The doctor nodded.
"Jamie is going to be fine. He hit his head, but he doesn't have a concussion. No broken bones, but a few bruised ribs. He will be sore for a few weeks, but he will be fine. I want to keep him over night for observation, but if everything goes well, he can go home in the morning. I'll have a nurse show you back, when he's settled." Frank thanked the doctor. A nurse lead them to Jamie's room.
His small body barely filled half the bed. He had some visible bruises on his face and arms. When he saw his family he smiled at them. Mary went straight to his side.
"Hey baby." She stroked his face gently.
"I'm not a baby mom." Mary just laughed softly and placed a gentle kiss on his forehead. everyone took their turned talking with Jamie, except Danny. He stood in the corner of the room with his head down. After Frank had said a few words to Jamie, he shuffled everyone out of the room, so Danny and Jamie could talk.
"It's not your fault." Danny looked up at Jamie.
"Yes it was." He looked back down to his feet.
"Danny, It was accident."
"I...you could have died!"
"But I didn't!" Jamie tried to sit up higher in bed, but grimaced in pain. Danny was by his side in and instant helping him. "Danny, you are not at fault."
"If I wasn't such a jerk and didn't pick that fight for no reason, then this would have never happened."
"You're supposed to pick fights for no reason, you're my older brother." Danny smiled slightly.
"I'm also supposed to protect you."
"You can't save me from everything Danny."
"I can try." Jamie chuckled at him.
Mary smiled from in the hallway. She knew that Danny blamed himself, but she also knew that Jamie was the only one who get through to him.
