Jamie never understood why everyone hated Mondays. It was just another day. so he didn't groan when he got up Monday morning, he didn't walked around his apartment angrily and curse that it was Monday. No, he jumped out of bed and put running clothes on and left his apartment in a good mood. He smiled at the people he ran past. He hummed along to the music playing in his ears. He winked at the ladies that watched him run by. Monday, was just another day, there was no reason for it to be cursed about.
He bounced happily on the balls of his feet as he waited for the walk signal. He took a deep breath of the crisp cool air. People around him talked angrily into cell phones and chugged coffee in a attempt to wake up. When that walk signal appeared, Jamie was the first one in the cross walk. His jog turned into a full blown run and Jamie felt free. He just kept running, until his legs could carry him no farther. He stopped and leaned against a light pole to catch his breath. He glanced down an alley and saw a woman being pushed against a wall by a dirty looking man. He had his hand over her mouth so she couldn't scream. Jamie called the situation in and walked towards the alley. He wished he had his gun, but he decided to go in anyway.
"Sir, I need you to let the woman go." The man turned to look and Jamie.
"Mind your own business. This is my wife and we are just talking." Jamie looked at the woman and saw terror in her eyes.
"Is this your husband ma'am?" She started to shake her head no, but the man forced her to shake her head yes.
"See. Now leave us alone."
"I can't do that." Jamie stepped closer, aware that the man was bigger than him. The man screamed in pain and pulled his hand away from the woman's mouth.
"Help!" Jamie took the chance to charge at the man. He tackled him to the ground and the wrestled. Jamie tried to get the upper hand, but the man was too big. The man had Jamie pinned and started to choke him. Jamie fought the hands around his neck, but his strength was fading fast. The last thing he saw before he lost to the darkness, was the woman running out of the alley. At least he had saved her. Jamie's eyes closed and cold and dark consumed him.
The woman ran from the alley and ran into two officers.
"Please, you have to help him. He's going to kill him." The officers ran into the alley with their guns drawn. The woman listened as the officers yelled for the man to put his hands above his head. The yelling continued until a single gunshot echoed throughout the street. The woman ran back to the alley and saw her attacker being cuffed, with blood staining his right shoulder. Her eyes wondered next to the man who had saved her. He lay motionless on the ground. The female officer sank to her knees next to him and started CPR.
Eddie ran down the street with a newbie by her side. They were patrolling the street when they heard a woman scream for help. When they reached the alley, a woman ran into them and informed them of the situation. They ran in and tried to talk the suspect down, when that didn't work, they had to use force. Eddie shot him in the shoulder and let the newbie cuff him. She ran to the unconscious man. She froze when she saw who it was. She sank to her knees and checked for a pulse. Tears came to her eyes when she didn't find one. She yelled over her shoulder for the other officer to call a bus. She turned back to Jamie and started CPR.
"Do not quit on me Reagan." She pumped his chest and then forced a breath into his lungs. She repeated the process over and over, until the paramedics took over. She watched them work, and fought back tears. She nearly jumped with joy when she heard them say they got a pulse. She followed them to the ambulance and climbed in. She grabbed Jamie's hand and smiled when it tightened weakly around hers.
She paced the waiting room, when the Reagan family burst through the door. They came to her and started asking questions. She explained what she knew and then they all sat and waited in silence. They was a collective sigh of relief when the doctor told them that Jamie would be fine. Eddie asked if she could go and see him first. Danny glared and her but nodded a yes.
She walked into his room and his eyes met hers. He looked puzzled.
"Your family is in the waiting room. But I have to get back to my shift. I wanted to see for myself that you were fine."
"You were in the ambulance with me." Eddie blushed.
"Yeah, I was."
"Thank you, you're a great partner and friend."
"Yeah, friend" She whispered.
"What?"
"Oh, um I should be heading back out."
"Yea. Thanks."
"Anytime." She smiled and left. She closed the door behind her and walked out of the hospital.
A friend, that's all she'll ever be. She blinked away the tears and placed her hat on her head and climbed into the waiting police car. Her emotions could wait she was on duty.
"I hate Mondays." The newbie chuckled and focused on the road.
