Jamie woke up as the sun cascaded into his bedroom. He stretched and then, climbed out of bed. The floor was nice and cool under his bare feet. He walked into the kitchen and switched the coffee pot on. He pulled open the fridge and pulled out the coffee creamer. After he had a warm cup of coffee, he made his way to the living room. Jamie switched on the TV and sank into the soft couch. He flipped through a few dozen channels, until finally deciding on the news. Jamie sipped happily on his coffee and half paid attention to the morning news. He heard the mail, being pushed through the mail slot in his door, and rose to go get it. He bent down and picked up the various envelopes. Jamie flipped through them and found nothing exciting. He dropped the mail on the dining room table and returned to his spot on the couch. After he was settled, he heard more mail drop through the slot. This puzzled Jamie. The mail only came once. He sighed and stood. As soon as he was standing, a blast through him backwards.
When Jamie woke, there was overbearing heat and his body ached. He opened his eyes, and saw flames dancing around him. He tried to move, but found that he was pinned under his couch. Jamie put all his strength into pushing the couch off of himself. He managed to wiggle from underneath it. Jamie took a deep breath before he stood. It took him a minute, but he managed to stand. Once he straightened his back, a pain in his side almost brought him to his knees. He looked down and saw a piece of glass sticking out of his side. He drew in a shaky breath. Jamie grabbed the glass and pulled it out quickly. He pulled the table cloth from the destroyed table and ripped the burnt part off. He used it as a bandage and wrapped it tightly around his waist.
Jamie started searching for a way out. His apartment was full of flames and the smoke was making it hard to breath and to see. Upon investigation, Jamie discovered the only way out was through the front door. He carefully climbed through the ruble and made it to the door. Flames danced across the floor in front of the door and Jamie took the chance and jumped through the flames. He made it into the hallway and pulled his shirt up over his mouth and nose. He fought back the urge to cough. Smoke filled the hallway. People were exiting their homes and making their way outside. Jamie was running on pure adrenaline and started ushering people out. He cleared all the apartments on his level and then started to walk down the stairs, himself. Out of nowhere, his adrenaline vanished and he grabbed the railing to stay upright. The smoke continued to fill the building and fill Jamie's lungs. His vision began to grow dark, and Jamie lost his fight with consciousness.
Danny threw his car in park and pushed through the mob. He stopped dead in his tracks as he saw the giant orange flames engulfing Jamie's apartment complex. Danny started to search through the crowd, his eyes searching for the familiar face of his baby brother. He was fighting back tears, until his eyes fell upon Jamie's neighbor.
"Mrs. Jones!" She turned and smiled sadly at Danny. "Have you see Jamie?" The elderly woman sent Danny a puzzled look.
"Not since he helped everyone out." Danny's heart sank. He nodded his thanks and took off towards the house. A firefighter stopped him.
"Sir, I can't let you go in there."
"My baby brother is in there." The firefighter looked at Danny.
"You're Danny Reagan, right?" Danny nodded. "You're brother is Jamie Reagan?" Danny nodded again and looked the firefighter in the eyes. "I'm sorry, but the fire came from his place. Once we get the flames out, we can investigate and see how the fire was started." Danny looked at the man.
"You think my brother sent this place on fire?" Anger was evident in Danny's voice.
"No. I'm just saying the fire started in your brother's apartment." The firefighter walked off. Anger and fear pumped through Danny. He watched the front door of the apartment building. He was about to run in himself, when a firefighter came out, carrying a person. Danny knew instantly that it was Jamie. He followed the firefighter to the ambulance. The paramedics tried to stop Danny from riding along, but Danny was not in the mood so he just climbed in. Danny grabbed Jamie's hand and watched as the paramedic work on him. He kept saying all these medical terms that Danny didn't understand. When they reached the hospital, Jamie was taken away and Danny was left standing alone. He pulled out his phone.
"You have reached Frank Reagan leave a message." Danny waited for the beep.
"He dad, um...There was a fire at Jamie's apartment. I don't know how he's doing. Um...just get here fast ok?" Danny hung up and called Erin.
"Danny, I can't talk. I'm getting ready to go into court."
"Erin, It's Jamie."
"What happened? I'm on my way."
"There was a fire at his apartment building."
"How is he?"
"I don't know."
"He'll be ok." Danny hung up and sunk into a chair.
Erin ran into the waiting room. Danny stood when he saw her.
"Any news?" Danny shook his head. "Where's dad?"
"I don't know. He isn't answering."
The two Reagan siblings sat in silence for a couple hours. Danny stood when he saw a doctor approaching them. The doctor held out his hand.
"I'm Dr. Williams. Your brother is a luck man. He had a deep cut in his lower abdomen, that managed to miss all organs and it did not cause any internal bleeding. He took in a lot of smoke, but his lungs are doing good. He his awake and asking for you." Danny smiled at Erin and they both followed the doctor to Jamie's room. Erin entered but Danny waited. He turned to the doctor.
"I've seen you before." The doctor smiled.
"Yes you have. You saved my little brother's life and in turn I saved yours." Danny smiled back at him and entered Jamie's room.
"Hey kid." Jamie turned his blue eyes to Danny and smiled weakly. "Do you remember what happened?"
"Yeah, they mail came so I checked it and then another package dropped through the mail slot. I rose to go get it and then there was an explosion and I woke up pinned under my couch. I made it out of my apartment and helped everyone else get out, then I passed out."
"So someone sent you a bomb?"
"No, it came right after the normal mail. Whoever made the bomb, personally dropped it off." Anger grew inside Danny.
"I'm going to find this guy and kill him."
to be continued
So I am going to make this story a two shot. Even though these are supposed to be one shots.
