This is a long one. Enjoy!
Frank kissed Mary good-bye and ran out the door. Mary put the last sandwich in the line of paper bags and stuck each of them in the correct book bag. Danny ran into the kitchen and grabbed his bag and waved good-bye. His friends were waiting at the corner to walk to school together. Erin and Joe walked into the kitchen together.
"You two, ready for the dentist?" Mary smiled slightly as Erin rolled her eyes and Joe's shoulders slumped. "Jamie?"
"Yeah, Mom?" Jamie was still in his room.
"I'm leaving, honey. You need to leave for school soon. Don't forget to lock the front door."
"Yea, Mom." Jamie went back to combing his hair. He heard the front door close and the house fell silent. Jamie brushed his teeth and when he shut off the water, he heard the front door open. He walked out of his room to see who was back home.
"Hello?" Jamie got no response. A shiver ran down his spine as he crept down the hall. He heard a crash in his parents' room. He pulled and bat out of the closet and walked towards the closed door. He took a deep breath and pushed the door open. A man was standing at his mothers dresser, shoving her jewelry into his pockets. "Hey, those are my mom's!" The man jumped and spun to look at Jamie.
"They're mine now." The man charged at Jamie. He swung the bat and it hit the guy in his ribs. He groaned and ripped the bat from Jamie's hand. Jamie turned to run, but slipped on the rug. He hit the wood floor and tried to crawl away. The man swung the bat and nailed Jamie in the right shoulder. Jamie screamed and tried to crawl away. The man reached a colossal hand down and wrapped it around Jamie's neck. He pick Jamie up and pinned his against the wall. Jamie struggled for air. The man dropped Jamie. As he stood leaning against the wall, trying to catch his breath, the man swung the bat again and Jamie heard his ribs crack. Jamie screamed again and sank to the floor. Jamie struggled to raise his head.
"My d-dad is a c-cop, h-he'll f-find y-you."
"Ah! I'm so scared. Ha. I'll kill your dad before he could ever catch me." The man laughed and picked Jamie up off the floor. He pulled a knife from his pocket. "Now, I'm going to shut you up forever." Jamie's eyes grew wide and he tried to pull away. The man smiled and plunged the knife into Jamie's chest. Jamie gasped as the pain hit him like a freight train. The man pulled the knife out and wiped it off on Jamie's pants. The man walked out the front, with his pockets full of Mary's jewelry. He closed the front door and walked away as if nothing had happened.
Missy Johnson, the old lady that lived across the street, was watering her lawn when she saw a strange man walk out of the Reagan house. She ran up her porch steps and into her kitchen. She picked up the phone an dialed Frank.
"Hello?"
"Hello, Frank, this is Missy."
"Hey, Missy. How are you?"
"Let me get to the point. I just saw a strange man walk out of your house."
"What?" Frank jumped from his seat and pulled on his coat. "Do you know if anyone is home?"
"I don't think so, but I'm not sure."
"Thank you, for calling."
Jamie tried to crawl towards a phone, but the pain was too much. He just lay there, blood pooling out of his chest and pain lacing through his entire body. He was fighting to stay awake, praying that someone would come and find him. Just as he finished the prayer, he heard police sirens. He heard the front door burst open. Jamie tried to call out, but he couldn't.
Frank burst through the front door, with his gun drawn. His partner trailed behind him. The smell of blood hit him immediately and he began to run through the house, forgetting his protocol. Frank froze when he turned the corner into the hallway.
"Jamie!" Frank ran forward and dropped to his knees next to his son. Jamie was barely conscious. Frank screamed for and ambulance in his radio. He pulled Jamie into his lap and tried to stop the bleeding. Tears streamed from his eyes and he could actually feel the life being drained from his youngest child.
Mary dropped Joe and Erin off at school and headed home. Fear grew in the pit of her stomach as she drew closer and saw all the police cars in-front of her house. She threw the car in park and ran for the door. She was stopped by Frank's partner at the front door.
"You don't want to go in there Mary."
"Who is it?"
"It's...Jamie." Mary instantly burst into tears and tried to push past, he finally let her through. Mary stopped dead in her tracks as she saw her husband cradling her near lifeless son. Frank's eyes met Mary's and she understood the silent message. It was bad and Frank didn't know if Jamie would make it. The Paramedics bust in and started working on Jamie.
Danny was cussing at himself for not study for this test. None of it made sense to him. He sighed and started to fill random answers in. The classroom door opened and the entire class looked to see who it was. It was the Principal.
"I need Danny Reagan." Danny stood. "Collect your things." The whole class started whispering to each other. One kid yelled out the Danny was in trouble. Danny ran through all the things he did and couldn't figure out which one would require the Principal to get involved. Danny was led to the office where he was told to wait.
Erin was trying not to fall asleep in the back of the classroom as the teacher went on and on about the "existence" of aliens. The door opened and the Principal stuck his head in.
"Erin Reagan?" Erin stood. On one hand she was happy to be out of that class, but on the other she had no idea why the Principal needed her. She was also led into the office. Danny and Erin exchanged looks of confusion. A couple of minutes later, Joe joined them in the office.
"I'm sorry to pull you from class, but an officer is going to escort you to the hospital. Something has happened, I do not have details. But the car is waiting out front." The Reagan kids all looked at each other. They made their way to the police car and rode to the hospital in silence. When they arrived, the officer led them to a private waiting room. Mary and Frank stood when they entered. Upon seeing both their parents, they instantly knew that it was Jamie.
"It's Jamie, isn't it?" Joe's voice was weak and it shook. All Mary could do was nodded. The family pulled each other close and cried. Time passed and the family waited for any news. Finally, a doctor entered the room. Everyone stood.
"I am Doctor Williams. Jamie is a very luck boy. He is a fighter. He has a slight concussion and his shoulder was dislocated. He will need a sling for a while. He has four broken ribs and two fractured. As for the stab wound, somehow, by the grace of God, no vital organs were hit and it just needed to be stitched closed. I want to keep him here for a few days, but he will be able to go home by the end of the week.
The Reagan family broke into happy tears and followed behind the doctor to Jamie's room. When the door opened, Jamie was awake. Mary rushed to his side.
"My beautiful boy. You are so brave." Jamie turned his head away.
"No I'm not. I failed the man got away with your jewelry." Mary gently turned Jamie's face towards hers.
"I could care less about my jewelry. You are what I care about most. You were very brave." Mary gave him a kiss on the forehead and let him get some rest.
