My first day at work, Duncan stood early at my door and waited.
"Morning." I said as I came out with Thom.
"Morning Baby and Thom." He smiled at us and I smiled back. We walked to the car and he opened the door.
"Is there any possibility to have lunch at home?" I asked as Duncan stepped in the car.
"I think so, it's not so far. I think about 2 mins, I guess I can bring you and pick you up during lunch whenever you want." I looked at him as he took off to the company.
"Or you can have lunch with us. The reason why I ask is because Thom can also can have a little nap." Duncan looked at me and nodded.
"They have put a cradle in your office though, guess for when Thom really is tired." As Duncan looked in his rear mirror at Thom who was looking outside while sucking his thumb.
"That's nice. They're very thoughtful, now I really need to proof myself." Duncan chuckled a bit.
"What if I fail doing that?" I was a bit nervous I guess for the first day.
"Don't worry Baby, you won't." Duncan said as he turned left and then a bit further into the street he turned right onto a parking.
I looked around and, saw how Duncan parked the car at a place closest to the building. I looked at the little signs at the spaces. 'Miss Houseman' the sign said and I was a bit surprised.
"I have an own parking space while I don't have my own car?" Duncan chuckled about my reaction.
"Well, every manager gets one and I'm your driver and assistant that's why I park here. It's also for them to know when you or I are at the office." I nodded that I understood and stepped out.
Duncan walked next to me and led me through the building, where I saw a lot was going on, to the back on the ground floor.
"Here you are." Duncan opened a door and I looked into a spacious office with a big desk in the middle and one smaller at the side.
"I guess that one is yours?" As I pointed at it, he only nodded and smiled.
"Nice office though, really fancy as John said." He chuckled and I giggled. I saw there was indeed a cradle in a corner at the other side. With little curtains so he would have a bit more privacy.
"You will need to go to the boss over 5 mins. I guess he's waiting for you already." Duncan said as he looked at his notes.
"You know when my training starts?" I asked as I sat down on the chair after I putted Thom on his feet.
"Yes, tomorrow is the first day. You will have training on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday morning." I nodded as I listened to Duncan.
"It's crazy." I whispered and Duncan chuckled again.
"I'll bring you to the boss, he's the one who phoned you." Duncan said and walked to the door.
"Mommy!" Thom said and walked quickly to me as he could.
"You need to stay here son. Mommy will be back." I whispered and lifted him up and cuddled him a bit.
"I will watch him." Duncan said and I gave him to Duncan who took Thom on his arms.
I followed Duncan to the Boss' office, he knocked on the door and waited.
"Enter." We heard and Duncan opened the door for me.
"See you in a bit." I nodded and gave Thom a kiss, Duncan smiled and closed the door behind me. He walked back to the office to do his work.
"Ah Frances, lovely to see you. I guess you have met your assistant already." The boss said as I walked to the desk.
"Sit down please." And so I did. "Yes, he's really nice but why do I need to have a driver and assistant?" I was curious.
"Because, believe me Frances, you will need him. He will take some of the work over on the days that you have training." I nodded with a smile.
"Bad of me not to introduce myself. My name is Eugene Hancock." He said as we shook hands now.
"How long will the training be?" "About 6 months, it actually depends on how quick you can learn."
"Okay, I'm a quick learner." I said and he smiled.
"Alright, Duncan will introduce you to the rest of the company and show you what exactly your job will be. That's all you get to do today. Tomorrow your training starts, but Duncan will also give you the details about that and bring you there." He explained.
"It's not here?" I asked curious.
"No, it's at the other side of town. You see why it's handy to have a driver now?" He asked as he stood up. I stood up as well.
"Yes I guess I see it now." He chuckled as he walked me to the door.
"I hope you like him, otherwise I need to look for someone else." He said as he opened the door.
"No, Duncan is lovely. I like him." I said as I looked at him, he nodded with a smile.
"Off you go now, I need to do a lot of things today. I'm sorry that it's short but I will make it up to you."
"Thanks sir." I said and walked back to my office.
Duncan looked up as I walked into my office and looked at Thom who sat on the floor playing and babbling.
"I hope you will like him, he's a nice boss." Duncan said and I nodded as I took Thom on my arms and twirled. Thom giggled and shrieked and I smiled.
"I need to introduce you to the people now. You can take him with you, so everyone knows him as well should he one day go off wandering."
"If he has that from his dad then we can search for him many times." Duncan laughed a bit and we walked through the building.
It was lunch time when Duncan had introduced me to everyone, although I hope it were everyone because my head is a bit spinning from it.
"After lunch I will show you your job and then I can bring you home." I nodded as we were in the canteen to get some lunch.
People looked at us because we're just being new and we're American. That makes us even more interesting I guess. A girl came to our table and looked at Duncan.
"Hey." She said a bit shyly and I looked at her, I smiled as I looked at Duncan.
"Hey." Duncan said but only gave her one look and ate further on. I began to think and kicked his leg, Duncan looked at me confused.
"You're not being polite Duncan." I said and he looked at her again.
"You want to join us?" He asked now but I saw he was a bit agitated, the girl smiled and sat down.
"Thanks." She said and looked at me. I winked at her and looked at my son who was looking at her thoughtful.
"Son, you got to stop looking so serious." I giggled and the two looked at him as well.
"He's adorable and so cute." The girl said and I looked at her with a proud smile.
"Yep, he's my true love." I giggled and Thom reached out to me, I put him on my lap and ate my lunch again. He was saying 'buh, buh' all the time.
Duncan looked at him and smiled. The girl looked at him and gave a small sigh, I was watching them and thought. Seems this girl is totally head over heels and I can't blame her for it.
"Duncan?" I asked and he laid his fork down and looked at me.
"You want to change diapers? I know you can do it. I will be joining you in a bit at the office." I said and Duncan nodded, somehow relieved he could leave the table.
He took Thom from me and walked away, the girl looked after him and then at the table. I gave her my milk and she looked at me confused.
"You like him a lot don't you?" I asked with a smile and she started to blush.
"Yes I do, he's so gorgeous and caring." She whispered. "Yeah he is indeed, he would be the perfect man to almost every woman. But anyway, does he know your feelings?" I asked now.
She shook her head and looked down. "I don't dare to tell him, don't think he likes me the same way."
"If you want someone so bad you should start fighting for it." I told her.
"But is that normal for a woman to do? I've heard so many times that the man needs to make the first step." She said and looked at me again.
"Sure it's normal, why can't a woman do it? If you need to wait for him then I think you will wait for a long time." She looked at me with more interest.
"How?" I smiled and nodded at her curiosity.
"Simple, make compliments. Act casual and smile at him. Help him out where you can and when he wants. Don't go obvious sitting next to him and following him around. That does creep the guy out and makes him run away."
"But I think he already is creeping out." She said and I shook my head.
"What?" She asked. "He isn't, he just doesn't know how to be when you're around. I think he likes you but doesn't really show it. It's the little things." I winked and she blushed.
"How do you know all this?" She asked.
"Oh, long story to tell. Maybe another time, I only can say that I had sort of the same." I winked again and stood up. She looked at me.
"I must go now, see you later." I said and she waved, I walked to my office and smiled.
