Author's Note: I really have nothing to say except for I was procrastinating writing this for a while. I just had no freaking clue what to do with this. Any of it. So, enjoy this mediocre piece of writing by Kayson.

Day Twenty-Four: Girlfriend by Marie Digby

Hanna stood against a random locker, filing her nails with an emery board as she listened to Aria and Emily's discussion.

"Are we going dress shopping?" Aria asked Emily, who was rifling through her books for Chemistry.

"Hanna, are you coming?" Emily asked.

"Like I would miss a shopping date," Hanna replied sarcastically, going back to her nails.

Emily turned to Spencer, who seemed to be caught in a trance. She seemed to be staring off into space. "Are you coming, Spencer?" Emily asked.

Spencer snapped out of her reverie. "What?"

"She asked if you're coming dress shopping with us. For Homecoming," Aria answered.

"Oh, um…I don't know if I'm going to Homecoming," Spencer said as she closed her locker.

Aria stared at her, wide-eyed. "What? You can't just not go to Homecoming!" she exclaimed.

"That's a double negative, and yes, I can skip it," Spencer said with a sigh.

Emily stared at her. "Come on, Spencer! I don't have a date, either."

"I think the whole thing is kind of stupid. I mean, why do I have to pay fifty dollars for a ticket when I'm not even going to have any fun?" she asked sensibly. Hanna narrowed her eyes, trying to decipher what Spencer was really trying to say.

The bell rang, disrupting the girls mid-conversation.

"Come on, Emily. We have Chemistry," Aria said before grabbing Emily's arm.

"Please think about it, Spencer!" Emily said before joining Aria down the hall.

Hanna finally spoke up. "Okay, what is up with you?"

Spencer bit her lip. Hanna looked past Spencer's shoulder and down the hall. She gave Spencer a smug smirk. "Oh, I see what you were so distracted by. You were just checking him out again," she added smugly.

"Hanna—"

"Why don't you just make a move?" Hanna inquired, not giving Spencer any time to reply. "He's hot. You're pretty. He's single. So are you. What's the problem?" she asked.

"I can't just go up to him and ask him. And…he probably has a date anyway," Spencer replied as they walked down the hall together.

"No, he doesn't. Believe me, I'd know. He's best friends with Caleb. And Caleb and I tell each other everything," Hanna told her.

Spencer sighed. "Hanna, I'm not like you. I can't just go up to him and asking him out. I'm…I'm not that kind of girl," she answered sadly.

"Why can't you be? What's the worst that can happen?"

"He'll say no," Spencer replied.

"And what's so bad about that?" Hanna asked.

"Well…I…"

Hanna sighed. "So you're scared of being rejected. That's a stupid reason not to go for it."

Spencer just bit her lip, thinking about it. "I just can't, Hanna. Maybe the worst thing that could happen is…he says yes."

"Yeah, that's terrible. He's got like an eight-pack and he's sweet and funny. I would so hate being his girlfriend," Hanna said, the sarcasm oozing in her voice.

"I just can't be someone's girlfriend right now. Early college applications are due soon and I have a lot to do. I…I don't have time for a boyfriend."

"That's a crap excuse, Spencer," Hanna answered bluntly.

"Maybe I just don't want to be a girlfriend right now."

Spencer bit her lip as she watched him with his friends, including Caleb, Hanna's boyfriend, and Jason, her older brother (and Aria's boyfriend).

"You're practically undressing him with your eyes. Just grow a spine and ask him out, for Christ sake," Hanna said before she dropped her tray next to Spencer.

Spencer was about to say something, but Hanna interrupted. "He's a sweetheart, Spencer," she added.

"I know he is," she murmured sheepishly.

"And he's got amazing hair," Hanna said before sitting down. Spencer nodded. "He'd practically worship the ground you walked on if you made him yours," she added before opening her vitamin water.

Hanna finally sighed. "Alright, I can't take one more second of you being hopelessly in love. Come on," she said before grabbing her friend's arm and leading her over to Caleb's table.

"Hey, Hanna," Caleb said, trying to conceal the surprise in his voice (but he wasn't particularly disappointed).

Hanna gave him a small smile. "Hey, I missed you," she said before reaching for his hand. But really in her peripheral vision, she was just looking to see what Spencer was going to do.

She couldn't even contain her smile when she saw Spencer and Toby start a small conversation.

This was a good start.

Spencer was just lying on her bed, trying to figure out her Calculus homework. She saw her phone light up beside her before it began to ring.

Her heart fluttered a little bit before she answered the phone.

"Hey, Toby," she answered, before rolling over to lie down her back and stare up at the ceiling. These phone calls came to be a somewhat-regular occurrence.

"Hey, Spencer."

She thought about a reply. Well, to be honest, she thought about a thousand things when she was with him. She wondered if it was weird to want to be with him when she had no interest in being a girlfriend. It felt…selfish in a strange way.

No, she could control herself.

"So do you want to go or what?"

Her heart palpitated for a moment. "Sorry, what did you say?" she asked.

"I said, do you want to go to the library with me to study," he repeated.

She nodded, even though she couldn't see. Needless to say, she was kind of disappointed, but also relieved.

Spencer sat at home, alone, watching a stupid romantic comedy. Her friends had all gone out dress shopping, and she stayed home. Alone. Like always.

She sighed as she brought her legs up on the bed. She kind of wished he was there, even though this had to be one of the dumbest movies she'd ever watched. And then he'd do something cheesy, like yawn and wrap his arm around her and…

She shook her head. Why did she always have to do this when she had a crush on someone?

No, Spencer. That's not what you want. Then he'd be asking you all about what you're thinking. You don't talk about feelings. Not to anyone. And especially not to him.

She sighed, feeling defeated.

Her phone rang beside her. She looked and saw who was calling.

She bit her lip, contemplating whether or not she should talk to him.

What more did she have to lose?

"Toby?" she answered quietly.

"Hey, Spencer. What are you doing?" Toby asked.

"Um…not much, just…hanging around my house by myself."

"Where are your parents?" he inquired.

Spencer thought about it. "They're out of town for a convention or something."

"So you're home alone?" he asked.

She nodded. "Yeah."

"Do you want me to come over?" he inquired.

"Oh…you really don't have to, Toby."

"I'm not doing anything. I'll come over. It must be really boring being alone."

She didn't get a chance to argue before he hung up on her.

She couldn't keep the stupid grin off her face.

Onto reviews!

eveningshades1107:I've probably seen Pretty Woman or something, but I saw bits and pieces of the Notebook. Okay, so it kind of reminded me of the Notebook. Ugh, yes, Spencer is a Queen. Like, Marina-level Queen. In my perfect TV universe, Spencer is the Queen (Hanna and Mona play second fiddle, while some of the characters from Glee are probably ladies-in-waiting).

AL3110: Oh, girl, you're so silly. How I love thee.

FabsirellaPrincessOfPopcornia:Thank you! I'm reading up on film making because of this project I have (outside of school). And if you've ever watched Harry Potter, there's like a house system. If you've never watched Harry Potter (like me), basically, every kid in my high school (and a lot of faculty members) are put into a House when they enter the school/high school. In my school, there are 5 houses: Merrick (the best one), Methfessel (the cocky ones), Stettinius (the "unknown" house), Willard-Mundorf (the self-proclaimed "nerd" house), and Partington (the elks. I will call them that from now on). Basically, throughout the year, we compete in a variety of competitions and then our overall GPAs and everything are accounted and whoever has the most house points gets the house cup. We will obviously win this year. We're just that cool (and also, we're already like 100 points ahead of 2nd place, so we've kind of got this in the bag).

Okay, I know I haven't updated in a while, but my brain seriously has been like fried. I will need to pick up some speed. I should be a little more frequent (hopefully).

The next one-shot will be Quitter by Carrie Underwood! And I think that after that one-shot, I will have reached a hundred reviews, which makes me really excited! See you next time! -Kayson
