Thalia had never learned just how powerful she was. Sure, she knew she could control lightning, and, if she tried hard enough, could conjure a storm. But, she'd assumed her powers were nothing compared to Jason's. In the final battle of the Giant War, she was proven wrong.
They were losing, badly. The gods were weakening, some were already out of the fight. Demigods were falling left and right, so many were already dead, three of the Seven included.
Leo, Percy, and Jason. The only ones with the power to kill Gaea, at least according to the prophecy. It seemed as though they'd already lost, there was no hope left.
That's when Thalia discovered the full extent of her powers. She'd been able to conjure a tornado strong enough that it had thoroughly confused Gaea, allowing the remaining Olympians to finish her off.
