Author's Note: Whoa, Kayson has an actual one-shot which really is, by definition, a one-shot? MIND BLOWING!
Day Eighty-Five: When I Look At You by Miley Cyrus
She crept into the rectory very quietly, where he had been playing the piano. It was so happy and so upbeat on such a serious, mournful occasion.
She looked down at her lacy black dress and felt odd as the song finally ended. She didn't know what to say to him, so she just wondered if he realized her presence.
"That was the last song my mom wrote before she died. She always did it for fun. And she wrote that song…for me," he explained before his voice broke off at the end.
She bit her lip. She knew he hadn't been sleeping much ever since his mother passed away. Whenever she walked past his house on the cool summer nights, the lights would still all be on. It almost looked normal, for lack of a better word. It was almost as though he was expecting someone. Someone who would never come.
She wanted to tell him that things would get better. But she was well aware that this was extremely hard for him; there was no guarantee or even indicator that things would get better.
He was falling apart right before her eyes. Of course he was. His home—his mother—had just been ripped from him, and so…achingly and painfully slowly. He had to sit by and watch her suffer through all the pain.
After a moment's hesitation, Spencer walked over to the piano bench and sat next to him.
"You don't have to pretend you're okay. You can break down and cry in front of me. I don't care," she said quietly.
He turned to her. She took one look in his teary sea blue eyes before he burst into tears. She embraced him, trying to comfort him. Still, she knew it was partially in vain. The only person he really wanted now was his mother. And she could never give her to him.
"I just…I can't, Spencer. You remind me too much of her."
She was a bit surprised. "How?"
"Just…you have this truthful, forgiving look in your eyes she always had. And…you're always there for me," he explained quietly.
She took a deep breath after a long pause. "I know this probably isn't what you want to hear, but…she's where she belongs. It's a better place, I know it. And even though she's not physically with you, she'll always be there with you. I know she will."
Spencer began to feel herself getting teary-eyed. She had spent most of the time after his mother passed away thinking about how Toby must've felt, but…what about her? She loved his mother, too. She was an amazing woman she almost pictured as her mother. And this was a horrible thought, but sometimes…she wished her mother was more like Marion.
It was quiet for a moment. It wasn't awkward silence; it was comfortable. Both of them were thinking about what the other must've been thinking.
"It's weird," he said finally, in a firmer, steadier voice than before. "Yesterday, I had a dream and she was there. You were there, and so was Emily. And my dad…he was there, too. She was healthy. It was almost as if…she never was sick in the first place. At first, I was hoping that I was awake, and that this was all just a really horrible nightmare, but…I woke up and she was still gone," he disclosed.
There was silence. Finally, Spencer spoke again. "I know your world seems dark and cold right now, but it'll get better," she assured him as she turned to face him.
His pretty eyes were rimmed with red and she felt her heart break slowly. "Everyone keeps telling me that, but when? When will it get better?" he inquired softly, almost timidly.
"It will. But for now…you're all she has left and your life is beautiful. Please promise me you won't ever forget that," she demanded firmly.
He was quiet for a few seconds. Finally, he nodded. "I promise."
LittleBittyAbby: We used to do that in middle school and they do that in Concert Choir, but since the small ensembles happen after school and there are like a zillion games and rehearsals and other stuff after school, we usually don't get to meet until like two or three weeks before the concert. It just so happens that the way everything works out, there's like three weeks between the Upper School (that's what we call high school, since we're a fancy schmancy private school) Drama and the Upper School Winter concert and then like two or three weeks between the Middle School Musical and the Upper School Spring concert. Since there's only one drama teacher and he just so happens to be the chorus/vocal teacher, he's spread pretty thin, so he just waits to do it all like three weeks before the concert. Like, we had to learn the Bellas Finals from Pitch Perfect in like five days and it's really hard because it's a cappella. There's this kid I have a very tumultuous relationship with and I remember during the Middle School Musical (we were in 8th grade), he begged me to let him braid my hair and I was like whatever, so he did it and he literally just took all of my hair and tied it at the very end, so it was basically loose, just tied together at the end. Since my hair is decently long, it looked absolutely ridiculous, and I was just like, "I'm never letting you touch my hair again."
AL3110: I have no idea what you are saying or talking about. Can you please clue me in? #CluelessKayson I already have a lisp. On certain words, like "asks" and other dumb words like that...
MilaMizz: Well. I may do well. I don't know why I was under the impression you went to school school. IDK. Okay.
Guest (ShakingWithSpoby): I like it when I can write longer stories, but some songs don't have a ton of substance and sometimes I just can't get it done in time. With my projected 230 songs (total), I only have like 25 days until November 6th in which I am allowed to not post. In other words, aside from those 25 days, I have to update every single day with a new one-shot, so sometimes they're shorter. But believe me, if I could just spend the whole day writing long, glorious one-shots, I would do so. But yeah, I am so glad that you liked it and I'm glad someone recommended it to you!
Sarah:Lana is the queen. Marina is the goddess. Ed is alright, too. But they're like the patron saints I pray to every day. I get that excited when someone mentions a Marina and the Diamonds song because like nobody here in America knows who she is and I'm just like -_-
That was my one-shot. Keeping it terse. Plus, I want to go back to college humour because it is hilarious.
The next one-shot is going to be based off of I Promise You by Selena Gomez & The Scene. It was originally "Slow Down", but I was like, I don't want to write for that one so I settled on the one which I wrote. It's alright.
Bye! -Kayson
