Chapter 14
Weiss Rush
Nolan and I have constantly argued with each other for years, and nearly each time it ends with a cardfight. You've already read that at one point I used to be stronger than Nolan, however with recent matches she's been able to consistently school me save for the rare occasion she was grade stuck. Today… with this fight that losing streak ends as what I consider to be one of my most challenging fights yet is about to begin.
"We're near the end of the 3rd day of the Expo Vanguard fans, and that means only 2 more are left before the Expo ends for the year… but before that we still have the first of the Expo tournament's semi-final matches." Sara said as she spoke into her microphone while staring intently at the camera covering her and her colleague.
"Oh yes and this under-dog battle is shaping up to be an exciting fight between two people who we've recently learned are actually schoolmates. Now will the petit beauty with the stalwart shield of ice Nolan Elchart win? Or will the wielder of the clan of thunder dragons Kiba Nakashima pull out ahead?" Dr. O announced.
"Watch and fight out." Sara followed.
After re-watching this battle, here was the point where the cameras started to cover Nolan and myself. If you didn't think the expressions we had on our faces in my last entry were serious… then believe me they're nothing compared to what we have on right now.
"I will definitely make you pay for how you've been treating me!" Nolan declared.
"I've told you before that I haven't had a serious reason to beat you in a long time, but I do now. Also, you're one to talk! I'm tired of being your outlet for your monthly rages!" I yell as some of my pent-up aggression starts to slip through.
"Monthly ra….. oh heck no I can't believe you'd bring that up! I'm going to enjoy beating you!" Nolan yelled out of anger.
"Bring….. it….. on!" I retort.
"That's enough…. save your couple's bickering for after the fight!" the judge yelled in order to get us back and track.
"We are not a couple!" Nolan and I yell due to the extreme annoyance that comment causes us.
I didn't notice it at the time due to my wound up emotional state, but after re-watching this fight I noticed that our rather… direct response actually scared the judge a little, but his intention was correct.
"But he is right Nolan… the people here did come to see a fight, and not us arguing on national television." I point out as I place down my starting vanguard.
"Okay….. right… back to business." Nolan said as she took a deep breath in order to calm her nerves.
"Ahem….. are the two of you ready?" the judge asked after regaining his nerves.
"I'm ready to get this over with." Nolan answered.
"And I'm ready to win." I retort.
"Then let the first semi-final match begin!" the judge declared.
"Stand up, vanguard!" Nolan and I yell.
To have a fight with a "beauty with a stalwart shield of ice"… there's only one battlefield that this match could possibly take place in and that's the beautiful frozen fortress that floats on top of the water in the Winter Reefs, of which is located in the center of the coldest oceans in Cray. Now the fortress it's self is a finely crafted blend of ice and coral. The statues and certain hallways were made with clear ice so pure that if it were not for the coral underlay the chances of accidently bumping into something were very high. In any case the particular section of the fortress where Nolan and I would be doing battle was the open courtyard where the more human sized members train to improve their skills.
"Red Scarf Weiss, Hirl [Power: 5000]!" Nolan declared.
The color red is horrible cliché when it comes to being part of a hero's uniform. Take Superman, The Flash, and pretty much every red power ranger that ever existed. Still…. in this case a long red scarf extends from the neck of Hirl, and flows perfectly in the wind as it complements the clear icy armor hardwired onto the body of this Aquaroid.
"Fledgling Phoenix Brawler, Koutenshou [Power: 4000]!" I declared.
My own starting vanguard actually has something red attacked to it as well of which are red ribbons extending from his face mask, and under the red armor with the yellow accent covering his body Koutenshou is actually rather plainly dressed with the dark blue pants and the dark red shirt save for the partial reveal of the upper part of his chest.
"Oh so that's the deck you built just to beat Nolan…. Well let's see what it can do my friend." Virgil thought.
"You've changed your deck. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time you've ever used anything other than a variation of the Balien ride chain." I point out though I hide the fact that I was surprised by the change.
"I heard you were putting together something just to beat me, so I thought that I should do the same. Besides, I'm not going to let being stuck in the past stagnate my growth now." Nolan retorts.
"The captain of Team Star Ocean will start things off." Sara announced.
"Gladly….. I'll ride Weiss Dancer, Senah [Power: 7000] and I'll move Hirl directly behind my vanguard through his skill." Nolan said as she was thinking and playing normally at least on the surface.
There are many art forms both on this world and the planet Cray, but the one that Senah chooses to master is the art of dance. It would be hard for people not to realize this given the icy blue tutu with snowflakes on it that she's wearing, the green eyes colored as blanketed in snow, and by pure coincidence she actually has the same hair style as Nolan.
"I'll ride Brawler, Starting Dracokid [Power: 6000]!" I declare.
I have to admit that Starting Dracokid is actually kind of an adorable mix of a Korean high school's Jjang or strongest fighter and a male cheerleader from a Japanese highschool. This is due to the combination of raised fists, a green striped headband, and the black jacket with the silvery gray spiked shoulder guards.
"Koutenshou moves to the back row, and now he'll boost Starting Dracokid for an attack on your vanguard [Total Power: 10000]!" I declare.
[Drive Check – Brawler of Heavens, Youzen – Critical Trigger]
"All effects will go to Starting Dracokid, and that means you're forced to take two points of damage this turn Nolan [New Total: 15000 2 Crit]!" I yell.
Starting Dracokid's hand is burning red, and it's roar tells me… I'm sorry I can't finish that sentence, but I couldn't help but make that reference. Realistically Starting Dracokid's hand actually does start glowing thanks to the Thunder Dragons ability to manipulate lightning. In any case while I may never hit a woman my vanguard has no suck qualms about doing the same to Senah.

"Over to you." I tell Nolan as she silently draws her next card.

"I ride Frostcharger Weiss, Lance Lambert [Power: 9000] and I'll call Snowstrike Weiss, Colbolt [Power: 9000]!" Nolan declared.
Much like how the legendary unit Blaster Blade has Wingal as a sort of loyal hound, so does the ace of the clan Balien in the form of Lambert. This wolf-like sea-beast is the size of a small bear wearing armor made of the purest magically enchanted ice, of which was in turn made from water from the most magically concentrated parts of the Winter Reefs, and his main armament are two magic lances attached to its side that are formed by instantly freezing the water gathered from the air itself.
"This may be a Weiss deck, but those two are Crystal Reef units I haven't seen before. Alright….. I'll just take the rearguard one down the first chance I get." I thought.
"What do you think so far as Nolan's personal butler?" Cloud asks as he refers to the opening moves of the fight.
"He hid it very well, but that person was just surprised by the two units Lady Nolan placed this turn. That's to be expected since these Weiss units haven't even been announced yet." Jacob answered as he coldly refused to refer to me by my name.
"You really don't like him very much do you?" Cloud inquired.
"Ha….. personally I find some ill-mannered brutes such as him to be a detriment to society, so no I don't like him; and, I quite frankly don't see what Lady Nolan finds so fascinating about him." Jacob answers again.
"I'm kind of tempted to see how they'd work out their mutual dislike of each other in a fight." Nikki thought as she could clearly see the intense dislike Jacob held for me in his eyes.
"Pierce through the dragon's thunder Lance Lambert [Total Power: 14000]!" Nolan declared as she placed her vanguard in the rest position.
"Trying to chance for a trigger won't be enough to scare me." I thought.
"That's strange….." Jacob mumbles to himself.
"What is it?" Nikki asks as she was curious about whatever Jacob saw.
"Normally Lady Nolan would always with the rearguard first when her opponent has a vanguard with a base power of 6000. Since she isn't I'm guessing she isn't as composed as she looks. Then again it's also possible I'm just reading too much into in, and that she's simply chosen to change up tactics." Jacob explained as he showed how open-minded he was despite his attitude.
"No guard." I respond.
[Drive Check – Palert Weiss – Critical Trigger]
"You know how this will go, but just in case the critical goes to Lambert and the power to Colbolt [New Total 14000 2 Crit]!" Nolan informed as she pointed to her vanguard and then her rearguard.
"Oh this is going to sting." I thought as I braced myself for the coming attack.
It was hard for my Starting Dracokid to keep his balance given the ice/coral floors and the waves of the ocean rocking against this fort, but Lance Lambert easily moves across it due to being based here on occasion. Suffice to say Dracokid raises his arms up in an attempt to guard; however, the lances of Lance Lambert are able to pierce his thick scales rendering his arms nearly useless.

"Since there's nowhere else it can go, I'll give the power to Starting Dracokid plus I draw." I tell Nolan as I draw my next card.
"Now I'll have Colbolt attack next [Total Power: 14000]!" Nolan declared undaunted by the defensive bonus the trigger gave me.
"I guard with Youzen [Total Shield: 10000]!" I quickly counter.
"Then I'll end my turn." Nolan informed.

"The fight may be even for Kiba so far, but I hope Sade is having just as much luck against Isaac." Virgil thought
Actually throughout my entire fight with Nolan I overheard commentary about how Sade was doing against Isaac, but I won't be mentioning any of them as they're not the important subject at hand right now.
"Hell Chain Brawler, Koutenka [Power: 10000] goes to the vanguard circle." I tell Nolan as I decide to use something other than the typical game terminology.
"Do you really think that's going to scare me?" Nolan asks as my red fisted dragon is replaced with a human with lightning charged chains wrapped around his arms.
"Then know that as you built your deck to maximize its defensive strength…. I built mine to maximize its offensive might. I call Brawler, Wildfist Dragon [Power: 9000] to the rearguard!" I declare.
"So far both the fight and the field are even; however, I doubt the famed fighter Nolan would let an unknown opponent get the advantage over her so easily." Sara announced.
"If she were actually set up against some random unknown fighter I would agree with you Sara, but her opponent Kiba Nakashima is neither of those things. From what research the Expo's PR division has done it seems that these two have year's worth of experience fighting each other." Dr. O pointed out.
"Ah in that case given the importance of this fight, Kiba and Nolan must be testing the waters to the utmost extreme before they go in for the kill." Sara concludes.
"Perhaps, but the only way to find out is to wait and see how thinks develop." Dr. O retorts.
"Koutenka will attack your Lance Lambert [Total Power: 14000]!" I declare.
"That's not a lot of power for me to worry about though compared to the frozen body of Palert Weiss [Total Shield: 10000]… it means absolutely nothing." Nolan countered.
"You fully intent to put up a stalwart resistance until the end don't you?" I ask.
"This fight will end once my clan takes the last of your vanguard's strength and uses it as power against you, but for now it's still your turn. Does that answer your question old friend?" Nolan retorts.
"Don't worry I haven't forgotten and we're not friends, so don't bother with that speech. Checking the drive trigger [Tonfa Wielding Brawler, Aak – No Trigger]." I reveal though I hide my disappointment with the luck of the draw in this case.
"Wildfist goes next [Total Power: 12000]!" I declare.
Normally I would describe how this attack looked with a fanciful bit of writing, but the best way to describe this sounds a bit morally questionable so I'm afraid you'll all have to leave it to your own imagination for this part. Still the important part is that Nolan chose not to guard.

"Let's see how you like the ace of my new deck!" Nolan yelled as given the expression on her face she clearly drew something good.
"Oh my I wonder what that would be. It's an embarrassment for me as an announcer to not have reviewed some of the newest cards for the Crystal Reef clan." Sara announced.
"I believe I have a strong hunch as to what Nolan's about to play next, but I'll hold my tongue so all of you vanguard fans can enjoy the surprise to the utmost." Dr. O follows.
"Protect the paradise of the cold north sea with your own fists! I ride Frostcharger Weiss, Dreadnought Balien [Power: 11000]!" Nolan yelled as she placed the ace of her deck on the vanguard circle in a sort of sweeping motion.
It was time for the frozen wolf of the North Sea to exit the battlefield at least for now. You need not worry for you will see him again soon enough. Still the guardian you see standing before you has a tall overbearing humanoid appearance, it wears the most legendary ancient armor of the Crystal Reefs in its most enhanced form, and all of it is powered partially by the Hydromana engine mk3 to give him great power when the time comes.
"Wow that's big." I thought as I feel my body shrink under the weight of Balien's presence.
The guy or that is Nolan's vanguard…. To give you an idea of his size…. He was about as tall as what Lambert would be if he were to try standing up on only his hind legs
"I call Senah [Power: 7000] to the rearguard, and now Balien attacks Koutenka [Total Power: 16000]." Nolan declared.
"Bring it on Nolan." I tell Nolan obviously signaling my willingness to take this attack.

[Drive Check – Snowstrike Weiss, Colbolt – No Trigger]
"No critical…. So far everything is going according to plan." I thought as I see Balien charging towards my vanguard.
A telephone punch would normally be very easy to counter due to the wide arc movement one's body must make, however thanks to the power generated by Balien's Hydromana engine he's able to throw it at such speed that Koutenka is unable to take advantage of any of the openings before he's knocked back several feet.

"Colbolt, you go and attack Koutenka as well [Total Power: 16000]!" Nolan declared again.

"I got a heal trigger, so that means my vanguard gets a power bonus and I get to heal 1 point of damage." I smirk happy at my good fortune.

"I have to say I'm starting to wonder….." Sara announced.
"Oh….. what would that be?" Dr. O inquired.
"Just which is truly stronger in this fight? Ice harder than steel or lighting capable of splitting mountains in two? It's as if a greater power ensured that this fight would happen simply to answer that question." Sara explained.
"And an answer to that question we shall soon have because it's Kiba's turn now." Dr. O pointed out.
"With your fists of thunder, pierce through my enemy's stalwart resistance! I ride Brawler, Shotgun Blow Dragon [Total Power: 11000]!" I yell.
A storm of lightning surges out from my vanguard circle not unlike how crimson flames appeared when Nikki rode Dragonic Overlord. In any case a sky high wall of lightning surrounds my vanguard, but instead of the usual brightly colored dragons one would expect of the Narukami clan Shotgun Blow consists of a dark purple, black, and dark orange color scheme though be warned his power shall not be underestimated.
"I call Aak [Power: 7000] and Skyhowl Dragon [Power: 9000]!" I tell Nolan as I place the two aforementioned units in my left column.
"Normally I'd just go through the motions to save us both some time, but since this is an official tournament feel free to go ahead and explain the move I already suspected you'd make." Nolan said clearly trying to egg me on.
"I activate Skyhowl's skill, and now I'll force your Colbolt to the drop zone through his skill." I explain.
My rearguard unit Skyhowl Dragon drove his monstrously sized claw into the ground, and through some strange aspect of dragon physiology or the science of lightning itself a continuous chain of lightning bolts hits the ground heading towards Colbolt until once part of that chain actually hits him and splits him in half like a watermelon.
"With the support of Aak, my Skyhowl will make short work of Balien [Total Power: 16000]!"

"It looks like I get a trigger of my own, so I'll take advantage of the fact and give all of the power to my vanguard." Nolan informed.
"I'm not worried in the least, so now my vanguard Shotgun Blow Dragon will come swinging in next [Total Power: 17000]!" I yell as I put Shotgun Blow Dragon in the rest position.
"Even if your dragon has big fists… it still won't bust through the line of bodies I'll put in its way…. Parade Weiss, Shellia…. Quintet Wall!" Nolan countered.

"Just like how you wouldn't let a few units on the guardian circle stop you…. I'm not going to let this stop me!" I tell Nolan as I reach for my deck for this turn's drive check.

[Drive Check – Brawler, Green Gem Carbuncle – Heal Trigger]
"A shame I can't heal since you have more damage than me, but the power bonus I'll give to Wildfist Dragon is a nice consolation prize." I inform.
My own dragon decided to use his fists as well, but unlike Balien's telephone punch by Shotgun Blow Dragon goes for a quick jab despite the multiple bodies in his way. This ironic parade of bodies is able to indirectly stop my vanguard's punch by grabbing onto and cooling down my vanguard's right arm to the point where his nerves stop receiving signals from the brain.
"Wildfist Swings in for round 3 [Total Power: 17000]!" I declare as my rearguard unit mimics the same punching motion I make.

"Well it looks like I'll be lucky enough to heal this turn." Nolan confidently retorts.

"These two are fighting each other like rivals each putting something on the line they can't afford to lose." Dr. O announced.
"I won't deny the good show their giving us, but I do wish they'd take the time to enjoy this fight with their personal feelings for each other put aside." Sara followed.
"I truly don't like saying this, but there are times where only victory matters in a fight even if one or both of the fighters would normally prefer to enjoy it." Dr. O explained.
"In any case its Nolan's turn now and the starting conditions have been met, so soon enough we'll see the power of her new deck." Sara announced as well.
"Seek mate!" Nolan yelled as she held her hand over her vanguard.
I swear to this day I still don't know how it happens when an MF system isn't involved in the equation, but 3 critical triggers and Barkert Weiss go flying back into Nolan's deck. Soon enough one card flies out into Nolan's hand and…. I'm sorry but I can't be the only one who wonders how this physics defying phenomenon occurs.
"Savage wolf of the north and guardian of the Winter Reefs, show the greatest defense and in turn the greatest offense…. Legion [Legion Power: 20000]!" Nolan yelled.
"I'm no fool Nolan. Other than the increase in attacking power…. I have nothing to worry… I know that regardless of whatever it does… I know it activates during my turn." I thought.
"I call another Colbolt [Power: 9000] and Red Eyes Weiss, Crimns [Power: 9000]! Now let's see how you handle a Legion offense Kiba!" Nolan yelled as she readies herself for her next round of attacks.
"Like we've said to each other so many times in our past fights….. BRING…. IT….. ON!" I retort.
"Since I have a Weiss vanguard, Crimns gains +3000 power for attacking your Wildfist Dragon [Total Power: 12000]!" Nolan explained.
"I intercept with Skyhowl Dragon [Total Shield: 5000]." I counter.
"Balien and Lance Lambert…. Legion attack [Total Power: 25000]!" Nolan declared.
"I'll be taking that attack." I retort.

Despite the size difference between my vanguard and hers, Nolan's Balien forces my Shotgun Blow Dragon to raise his arms in a defensive posture as he blocks the Winter Reef guardian's relentless blows. This allows his mate Lance Lambert to easily get under Shotgun Blow Dragon, and maul my vanguard from below using the power of his magical lances.

"Now Colbolt…. Attack the vanguard [Total Power: 16000]!" Nolan declared.
"No guard." I retort.

"Lucky me… I get to heal again." I said as a confident grin appears on my face while I placed a copy of Lisei in the drop zone.
"Don't get smug…. you still haven't won the fight yet." Nolan retorts.
"Oh you've seen me smug before, so you should know this isn't it. I'm just happy at my good fortune." I point out.
"Whatever… I end turn." Nolan retorts.

Ignoring the pleasure fans got from shipping Nolan and I together, the people that were watching this fight were clearly enjoying the heated passionate battle going on before them. Strangely enough… though Nolan and I had the complete attention of those watching us, her teammates Jacob and Cloud were already getting up to leave.
"Wait… where are the two of you going?" Nikki asks.
"Either Lady Nolan will win on her next turn or…. that person will win on his following turn." Jacob explained.
"Wait… what makes you so sure?" Nikki curiously asks.
"The power of her new deck will either bring her victory or…. and I don't want to admit it, but her opponent is more than competent enough to be able to defeat her in a straight up fight." Jacob explained.
"It's also obvious what the other Legion unit in his deck is, and if he manages to get to it his deck will be thinned enough for he has a decent chance of pulling off its effect. Right now we're just leaving so we can collect the consoling or congratulation snacks for her depending on the results." Cloud explained as well.
"Pssst…. Hey Nikki I'm actually kind of hungry. Could you go with them and get something for me?" Tsubasa whispers.
"Seriously….. you just ate like 3 large teriyaki bowls." Nikki whispered back as she shakes her head in disbelief.
"Actually if you're getting something….. I could use some popcorn." Will said as he placed his hand on his stomach.
"Oh not you too." Nikki whispers.
"I thought you would enjoy the chance to spend some time with you know who." Abygail said as she purposely leans her head towards Jacob.
"What….. why would I want to spend time with a guy I just met… the concept is completely ridiculous." Nikki said rather loudly as she turned red with embarrassment, but thankfully it wasn't loud enough to cause those around them to turn and stair.
"Ara ara….. it's a good thing he wasn't here to hear you say that." Abygail said.
And at Abygail's comment, Nikki turned over her shoulder only to find that like she said Jacob was nowhere to be seen and was tremendously relieved.
"You see I told you that I didn't really care about that person one way or another." Nikki said as she stands firm in her blatant denial.
"Oh are you sure? He left a couple of minutes ago by the way." Abygail asks already knowing what Nikki's answer will be.
"Yeah I mean why would I….. I mean I don't really… ohhh you guys suck." Nikki said as she gave into her more base urges and went after Jacob.
Right….. well enough shipping aside, so let's get back to the fight at hand.
"So far your Legion has yet to impress me Nolan, but first I call Military Brawler, Lisei [Power: 9000]." I confidently tell Nolan.
"I wasn't born into this life merely to impress you like some housewife. I'm fighting to win this battle." Nolan retorts.
"Oh so you've thought about being a housewife Nolan? Aprons and stovetops wouldn't really fit you." I say to Nolan in a teasing manner as I couldn't help but take the chance to make fun of her a little.
"Shut up…. Just make your move….. this isn't the time or the place for your ignorant flirting!" Nolan yelled with embarrassment as the thought of being….. of well being the housewife of you know who crossed her mind.
"Ignorant flirting? Well whatever….. seek mate!" I yell as like Nolan said I returned my attention to the fight at hand.
And thus four cards flew back into my deck it that ever familiar and ever mysterious physic defying motion. By shuffling Lisei, Youzen, Skyhowl, and Defense Tortoise Weiss back into my deck… another copy of Lisei came flying out of my deck and into my hand.
"Open the way to victory together with your fists Legion [Power: 20000]!" I yell.
"Sara, do you mind if I explain the effects of Shotgun Blow Dragon?" Dr. O asks his colleague.
"No go ahead." Sara answered.
"When a fighter with Shotgun Blow Dragon as their vanguard performs Legion, by paying a counterblast cost of 2….. Nolan is forced to retire 2 rearguard units of her choice…. her own rearguards that is." Dr. O explained as he realized the potential mishap his choice of words could have caused.
"Now take Shotgun Blow Dragon's thunder blow shot!" I yell.
Shotgun Blow Dragon pulls back his left arm like he was about to throw a telephone punch of his own; however, instead of physical contact… a lightning bolt in the shape of a fist came flying out and in a single blow Hirl and Senah were turned into ash like a body dropped on a Tesla Coil.
"Shotgun Blow Dragon gets +1 critical for the turn since I have more rearguards then you, and my rearguard Lisei gets an additional +6000 power through his skill." I explain to Nolan.
And yet despite my explanation Nolan started to smile, of which surprised me. Any other fighter at our skill level at the time would at least be concerned in this situation, but though I didn't realize it at the time her smile indicated that I was falling right into her trap. It wouldn't have mattered even if I knew what Nolan was going to do in advance because I would have still had to have done the same thing.
"Shotgun Blow Dragon and Military Brawler Lisei…. Legion attack [Total Power: 25000 2 Crit]!" I declared.
"I'm not scared as you'll have to worry about Balien's legion skill soon enough, and now I'll nullify your attack with Crystal Weiss, Flurst [Perfect Defense]." Nolan calmly countered.
"What exactly does Balien do?" I curiously ask.
"Just go ahead and perform your twin drive check. You'll only have to worry about Balien's power if the conditions are met." Nolan retorts.
"Alright…" I respond as I decide to go along with whatever Nolan has up her sleeve.

"I give all of the effects to my rearguard Lisei." I tell Nolan.
Both my vanguard and his mate intended to do damage to Balien with their own two fists, but all of a sudden a water filled crystal like Aquaroid appeared in their path. This strange Aquaroid raised his right arm, and soon enough thanks to a mass production version of the hydromana engine the crystal on it expands to form a large wall.
"The conditions have been met, so that means Balien's legion skill activates." Nolan explained happy at what happened.
"What?! " I say out of surprise.
Upon closer examination of this wall of crystal, I noticed that on the other side the power my vanguard's attack was being directly converted into a pure form of energy, and that energy was being absorbed by Lance Lambert's lances (Slight tongue twister aside) like lighting to a rod; but… that wasn't the strangest part. Balien himself had one of his hands on Lambert, and was in turn absorbing the strength that Lambert was storing.
"Dreadnought Balien's legion skill is called Dreadnought Freeze Barrage! It works something like this: Since the attack of your grade 3 vanguard failed to hit, by paying a counterblast cost of 2… I get to draw 2 new cards to replace the ones I just lost… one for every unit on your vanguard circle." Nolan explained as she drew 2 cards from the top of her deck.
"Would I be wrong to assume there's more than that to worry about?" I curiously ask.
"No you wouldn't be wrong because Balien gains +10000 power the moment my next turn starts." Nolan explained.
"That would be a little hard to deal with, but only if you make it to your next turn. With the support of Aak, my rearguard Lisei will attack your vanguard [Total Power: 27000 2 crit]!" I declare.
"That won't be enough because I guard with Seahorse Transport and Dendro." Nolan counters.
"That's not enough either Nolan… you need another +2000 shield to be able to defend against this attack." I point out.
"I know I haven't forgotten, but since I have a Weiss vanguard Dendro's skill activates: My defensive power goes up by +1000 power for every one of my rearguard units until the end of the battle, and since I have 2 rearguards… that's +2000 power [Total Shield: 17000]." Nolan calmly explained.
"In that case Wildfist Dragon swings in again for round 3 [Total Power: 12000]!" I yell as I out Wildfist in the rest position.

At that moment the wrist guards of Balien's armor opened up and a torrent of ice blue energy came flying out as if just to vent what power Balien couldn't use himself.
"But wait there's more." Nolan revealed.
"Of course there is." I thought as I face palm myself within my mind.
"Colbolt's skill: While my vanguard is in Legion, for every attack of 20000 power or greater declared on my vanguard that I'm able to block… this guy gets a +5000 power bonus….. or +10000 power in this case." Nolan explained as she confidently believes her victory is near.
"That might be a little bad….. if she's able to summon a full formation and get's lucky with triggers… I'm not sure if I'll block everything." I thought.
"I call Azur [Power: 7000] and Barkert Weiss [Power: 7000] to the rearguard." Nolan informed.
"Here comes the big push." I thought as I do one final check over my hand.
And I did that because how I guard and how lucky she gets with triggers will make the difference between victory and defeat for me.
"Balien use the power of Kiba's vanguard and attack [Total Power: 37000]!" Nolan declared.
"Toshu and Quintet Wall!" I yell.

"That's still a little short, so I'll also guard with the Plasma Kick Dragon and another Aak [Total Shield: 40000]!" I counter.
"Alright so my vanguard won't be punching through, but my drive check will still give me a chance to wreck you completely." Nolan said and though she hid it well…. she was actually disappointed her vanguard's attack didn't go through.

"All effects go to Colbolt." Nolan informed.
[Drive Check – Armored Seahorse Transport – Critical Trigger]
"I apply the effects to Red Eyes Weiss." Nolan declared.
"Shit…. That's seriously drain my hand." I thought.
"Colbolt attack Shotgun Blow Dragon [Total Power: 31000 2 Crit]!" Nolan declared.
"I guard with Youzen along with Green Gem, and to make up the difference I intercept with Wildfist Dragon [Total Shield: 25000]." I counter.
"In that case Red Eyes Weiss… end it [Total Power: 17000 2 Crit]!" Nolan declared.
"I guard with Wild Cloak and Starting Dracokid [Total Shield: 10000]!" I yell as I stop the last attack of Nolan's turn.
"I don't believe it… even with the massive power bonus between Colbolt and the triggers… he still blocked everything. If I were to fight him yesterday….. there's be no way he could beat me. Did he improve that….. no he was always this strong… now he has a reason to bring all of his power in a fight. What's with this shaking… it's not fear, but excitement…. I'm actually staring to have a lot of fun." Nolan thought as she takes a couple of minutes to contemplate my survival.
"Unless there's some magical way to allow you to attack again…. Could you please end your turn?" I ask.
"Ha ha alright you survived, but you still aren't going to beat me." Nolan said as she had a honest smile on her face for once.
"We'll see….. but I'm glad to see you smile for once." I point out.
"You've seen me smile before." Nolan retorts.
"Yeah, but those were just fake magazine smiles….. Nolan smiling because she's happy is the Nolan I'd prefer to see every day." I honestly tell Nolan as I once again unwittingly fuel the freaking shipping wars.
"Oh why don't you let me beat you….. you'll get to see me smile more often that way." Nolan retorts as she finds what I said rather cool in the typical anime mc where…. okay you know where I'm going with this, so I'm not even going to finish that sentence it's too embarrassing.
"You know very well I'm not going to do that." I retort.
"Fine fine….. anyways it's your move." Nolan said as she signaled the end of her turn.

"Oh Kiba, how can you smile right now? You should know that your current situation is pretty freaking bad. It'll take a miracle for you to turn this around now." My friend Virgil thought.
He was right….. a miracle was what I needed, and they were already in short supply as it were.
"Amazing….. despite pulling a double critical trigger… Nolan's opponent Kiba is still alive in this fight." Dr. O announced as he stood….. or rather sat there as the case may be in disbelief of the stunt I just pulled.
"But his survival came at great cost Vanguard fans. Kiba has only 1 card in his hand and is down a unit on the front row while Nolan has plenty to guard with in her hand and 2 intercepts on her front row." Sara followed.
"Kiba will be hard pressed to survive another turn let alone win in this current situation, so basically another round of Balien's Dreadnought Freezing Barrage is all but guaranteed." Dr. O explained.
"My only chance is to perform Legion again, but will it be with Shotgun Blow Dragon? Or will it be that card?" I thought as I slowly place my hand on the top of my deck due to a mixture of anxiety, fear, and simple pleasure I'm feeling because of this fight.
"Well let's watch and fight out people. Kiba's potential last turn is about to begin." Dr. O announced.
"Stand and draw…. Okay I'll bet everything on you." I mumble to myself.
"Did you get something good?" Nolan asks.
"We'll see… Wild dragon of lightning show them the fury of a man's fist! Ride…. Brawler, Wild Rush Dragon [Power: 11000]!" I yell.
I think it goes without saying, but Wild Rush Dragon far better embodies the typical art style of the Narukami clan then that of Shotgun Blow Dragon what with his brightly colored appearance and all. Still looks are secondary compared to what's more important in this fight, and that is results.
"It seems Kiba is going to bet everything on one last Legion." Sara announced.
"He's proven his bond with the clan to be strong, so let's see if it'll follow through for him." Dr. O followed.
"One more time….. seek mate!" I yell as I held my hand over my vanguard one more time.
And one more time four cards from my drop zone flew back into my deck in that ever familiar physics defying motion. Once more a single card flew into the palms of my hand in response.
"Wild dragon, stand together with your wild brother and reveal the strength of your bonds….. Legion [Power: 20000]!" I yell.
"Like this is supposed to scare me." Nolan says.
"Oh believe me… you will be. Now Wild Rush and Wildfist Dragon….. legion attack! [Total Power: 25000]" I yell.
"Palert Weiss plus Seahorse Transport guards, and now I'll make up the difference by intercepting with Crims [Total Shield: 25000]." Nolan countered.
"With this Nolan has all but ensured another activation of Balien legion skill, and potentially her victory in this fight as well." Sara announced.
"Even if you pull two critical triggers like me… your vanguard won't be able to bust through, and if you were to give the power to your rearguard I'll have more than enough to guard with thanks to Balien's skill. You're screwed on two fronts Kiba." Nolan thought.
"The final twin drive check…." I declare not out of arrogance, but simply because I knew whether or not I won or lost… this was going to be my last drive check of the fight.
[Drive Check – Brawler of Heavens, Youzen – Critical Trigger]
"I give all of the effects to my vanguard [New Total: 30000 2 Crit]!" I inform.
"What…..?" Nolan thought clearly expecting me to apply the power bonus to my rearguard units.
"It's clear that Wild Rush Dragon has slipped through the cracks of your knowledge of my clan…. Otherwise you wouldn't be making that face." I tell Nolan as the expression of ignorance she had was clearly noticeable.
[Drive Check – Brawler, Wild Rush Dragon – No Trigger]
"Alright since your attack didn't….." Nolan started saying.
"Not so fast Nolan, you should know that I still have one trick left up my sleeve. Wild Rush Dragon's legion skill persona drive activates." I declare.
"For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term….. a 'Persona Drive' is a skill that only certain Legion units of each clan posses. It activates when the owner's vanguard is in legion and it drive checks a copy of a unit on the vanguard circle." Sara announced.
"Yes and Wild Rush Dragon's persona drive skill is….. well actually since it's Kiba's vanguard I'll let you all hear it from him." Dr. O followed.
"Since I revealed a copy of a unit on my vanguard circle, by paying a counterblast cost of 1… Wild Rush Dragon goes up 1 critical and gains an additional +10000 power!" I inform.
"What…. I can't possibly stop something with that much power!" Nolan said with shock.
"One more time….. Wild Rush and Wildfist Dragon… legion attack…. Twin Thunder Lariat [New Total: 40000 3 Crit]!" I yell.
At first these two dragons went their separate ways on the path to landing the finishing blow on Nolan's vanguard Balien. Wild Rush took out Seahorse Transport in a single attack, then Wildfist Dragon did the same to Palert, and finally they took out the last defender in their way Crims before making their way to Balien. The heavily armored Aquaroid himself is easily knocked off of his feet by the power of Wild Rush and Wild fist's electrically charged use of a classic wrestling move.

"I…. I can't believe you actually managed to beat me for once." Nolan said as she was in a state of disbelief exactly like how her sentence implied.

After the MF system completed its shutdown sequence, the adrenaline pumping through mine and Nolan's bodies started to subside causing the two of us to start breathing heavily as if we just ran a marathon.
"Wow….. that was….. really close…. for a second there I wasn't sure if I was going to pull it off." I tell Nolan as I take great efforts to regain control of my breathing.
"Whatever…." Nolan retorts busy collecting her deck as she too tries to regain control over her lungs.
What followed was a few seconds of silence, of which in turn was followed by an erupting applause from the crowd that watched our entire fight. To be blunt….. they simple thought that our entire clash was just that amazing.
"I can't believe you freaking pulled it off Kiba! Congratulations man!" was what my friend Virgil claimed he yelled from the stands though I couldn't hear him over all of the people watching us fight.
But I was at least able to hear what some of the people sitting in the stands behind me were saying.
"Wow it's been such a long time since I last saw such a heated passionate fight." One vanguard fan said.
"Yeah no kidding… I've never heard of this Kiba guy…. Single or team division aside, I wonder if he's going to enter the national tournament this year." A friend of that one particular fan suggests.
After finishing the process of collecting our decks, Nolan and I once again met in the middle of our battlefield to shake hands, wish good luck, and all that more because that it was expected of us rather then that being what we wanted to do.
"So are you going to rage again?" I ask.
"What no of course not…. I'm a grateful loser." Nolan answered.
"Last time you…." I start saying.
"I swear it was an accident I didn't mean to hit you with that broom, or that beaker, or that microscope. That shelf in the science lab collapses on its own." Nolan retorts as we finish our handshake.
"Surrrre." I tell Nolan purposely emphasizing the 'R' sound.
"It's the truth. Anyways is what you said about preferring to see me smiling more because I want to true? Or were you just saying that?" Nolan inquired.
"It was completely and utterly my honest opinion Nolan. I'd really prefer to see you smile more often and… now that I think about it…. I'd prefer that we got along more often too." I answer.
"I guess it wouldn't be too hard for me to smile more often. The defeated party must comply with the wishes of the victorious fighter, but you have to take responsibility…. Hey where'd he go?" Nolan said as through force of will she stops her cheeks from turning red not realizing that I had left before she even started talking.
"Before you got all love struck, he said something about wanting to see the end of Sade's match before it was too late and just ran off." Dr. O explained.
"Shut up you graduation uniform wearing addict….. I am not love struck!" Nolan yelled clearly embarrassed, of which only served as even more fuel for the shipping wars.
I have to say that this entry took me far longer to write then I thought it would, however we're not at the end just yet. Before I bring things to a close, I must first show you the end result of the fight between Sade and Isaac. That result was surprise especially since I don't think anyone expected to see that card.

After hauling ass to another part of the convention center, it doesn't take very long for me or Virgil who followed me shortly thereafter to find where Raphugio and Dalette were sitting. In fact they anticipated the possibility that we'd be able to join them before the fight ended.
"I take it you won?" Dalette asks the moment Virgil and I sat down.
"Yeah…. so how's Sade doing?" I ask.
"She was able to pull of the Galaxy Mond break ride combo, but Isaac was able to block every single attack." Raphugio answered.
"Wow… and given the field we might actually have another underdog upset." Virgil said as he examined the simulated rendering of both Sade and Isaac's units.
"No….. we won't…..and I'm sure you've already noticed." Dalette said to Virgil before turning her head towards me.
"Yeah…." I reluctantly say.
You see even though I wasn't a very strong fighter at this point in time, my most redeeming quality was tactical analysis….. or in simpler terms predict my opponent's next few moves several turns in advance. It may have helped make up for my lack of strength against certain opponents, but ultimately that little skill is useless if I don't have the means to stop my opponent even if I know what they're going to do.
"What are you guys talking about?" Virgil asks clearly missing whatever Dalette was pointing at.
"Take a look at Sade and Isaac, and tell me what you see." Raphugio said.
"All I see is that Sade is nervous and Isaac is calm." Virgil said after he squints his eyes in order to get a better look.
"Sade is shaking, sweating, and is glancing back and forth between her field and her hand. Now I might only be noticing that because I know Sade so well, but Isaac is starting directly at Sade." I explain to Virgil.
"His eyes are focused completely on his opponent like a predator on the hunt. He's only looked at his hand by chance when happening to draw for turn or because of a draw trigger." Dalette explained.
"To him his hand is an irrelevant existence during the time between guarding and attacking. He's remained completely calm despite Sade's relentless attacks. It's as if no matter what Sade does….. Isaac already knows he's going to win as if it was predetermined from the start." Raphugio followed.
"And most importantly he definitely changed his deck around a lot since yesterday." Dalette concludes.
But enough of the peanut gallery, and let's get back to the fight.
"We've just learned that the first semi-final match came to an end just a few minutes ago. It seems Kiba Nakashima will be moving onto the finals instead of Nolan Elchart as expected. Now with Isaac's turn coming up we'll see who gets to face him soon enough." MC Sonar announced.
"Stand and draw…. Final Turn!" Isaac yelled as whatever card he drew caused him to smile ever so slightly.
This was surprising to Dalette, me, my friends, and everyone else watching because Isaac at the time rarely ever smiled. In fact….. there were only 3 pictures in existence up to this point where Isaac was seen with a smirk on his face.
"Holy dragon with your wings of light enveloped by the destiny's chains, I pull you from a time before it became corrupt! I break ride Seeker, Sing Saver Dragon [Power: 11000]!" Isaac yelled.
For a humanoid dragon SSSD actually had a smaller frame compared to most other dragons, though his frame was still well defined with all of its muscles, but the impression its appearance has is nothing compared to the reaction everyone had when this unit actually appeared on the vanguard circle.
"Holy Edge Dragon gives +10000 power to Sing Saver Dragon through his break ride skill." Isaac explained.
"I'm almost speechless again vanguard fans. Why I never thought that any of us would see another legendary unit with a reputation to rival Dragonic Overlord and Dragonic Overlord the End. The most important question her is that despite having more than 4 cards in his drop zone… does Isaac have what he needs in his deck?" MC Sonar announced.
"Seek the mate!" Isaac yelled.
And soon enough four more cards flew back into the deck through that ever familiar physics defying motion.
"Legendary hero with the blade bonded to you by fate… stand together with the dragon of a pure destiny! Legion [Legion Power: 20000]!" Isaac yelled.
And there he was with his white blade with its shining blue stripes…. the legendary hero Blaster Blade… or to be more accurate one of its legendary variations Blaster Blade Seeker.
"Gildas's skill: Superior call Full Bloom Seeker, Cerdic [Power: 9000]. Call Flail Seeker, Hasbasado and he gains +4000 power through his skill." Isaac explained.
"With pure ease, Isaac has built up a full formation ready to decimate Sade's machines.
"I declare a legion attack upon Galaxy Blaukluger with Sing Saver Dragon and Blaster Blade Seeker [Total Power: 32000]!" Isaac declared.
"I nullify with Dunkelheit [Perfect Defense]!" Sade countered.
[Drive Check – Crossbow Seeker, Gildas – No Trigger]
[Drive Check – Good Faith Seeker, Cynric - No Trigger]
"Holy Edge Dragon's Blade Dance Melody activates, and with an additional critical stand again Sing Saver Dragon." Isaac declared as he pitched 2 cards from his hand.
"It'll be okay… I can still block it." Sade thought.
"Attack them with destiny's light for the second time Sing Saver… legion attack [Total Power: 40000 2 Crit]!" Isaac declared.
"I'll nullify that with a second Dunkelheit [Perfect Defense]!" Sade countered again.
[Drive Check – Blaster Blade Seeker – No Trigger]
[Drive Check – Seeker, Rune Eagle – No Trigger]
"Phew….. I just barely made it through that." Sade mumbled to herself.
"Looks like Isaac's turn has failed after all." Virgil points.
"You're wrong Virgil. Isaac's final turn…." Dalette was saying.
"It's only beginning." Teresa said as she by pure coincidence finished Dalette's sentence from where she was watching the fight.
"Legion skill: Counterblast 2, discard 2 cards from my hand, and soulblast 3." Isaac said.
Once again another card flew out of Isaac's deck, but this time without him having to put 4 cards back in.
"Return once more from the time before your corrupted fate! Superior persona ride Seeker, Sing Saver Dragon [Power: 11000]!" Isaac yelled.
"I'll have to rely on heal triggers, but I can still block his vanguards attack." Sade thought.
"Line up from the soul warrior with the blade bonded to you by destiny Legion Mate!" Isaac yelled.
A bright yellow if not golden glow began to cover Sing Saver Dragon, and somehow Blaster Blade Seeker slid out from the soul and stopped as it became perfectly aligned with Isaac's vanguard.

Now once more Gildas's skill: Superior call Hasbasado [Power: 7000] behind my vanguard, and Hasbasado gains +4000 power through his skill." Isaac explained.
"I guess that's it for Sade." I mumble as I get up from my seat.
"Where are you going?" Virgil asks.
"As close as I can to where they're fighting. I don't want to admit it, but Sade is as good as screwed so I should do my duty as a big brother and be there to console her when it happens." I calmly explain to Virgil.
I may have said that with a calm expression on my face, but I was in actually angered by the way Isaac relentlessly attacked Sade like she was no more than pray or an obstacle in his way. I knew better then to snap right at the moment of Sade's defeat, but I fully intended to defeat him with the way I want to fight when the time came.
Destroy my enemies with the power of destiny's light for a third time! Seeker, Sing Saver Dragon legion attack [Total Power: 33000]!" Isaac declared.

"I give the critical to Sing Saver and the power to Cerdic [New Total: 33000 2 Crit]!" Isaac informed.
Galaxy Blaukluger attempted to block Blaster Blade with his own sword and even though he was successful, the left flank of Sade's vanguard was left wide open for an attack. This was an opportunity that Sing Saver gladly took when he nailed Galaxy with a large glowing ball of pure energy.

"And it's over. Moving on to the final round….. as if it could have been anyone else is Isaac Barrett!" MC Sonar announced.
Like with my fight with Sade, the crowd watching Isaac went off in applause.
"The final match of the Expo's random selection tournament will be between the famed captain Isaac Barrett and underdog fighter Kiba Nakashima!" MC Sonar announced.
