"Phew that was a close call!" said Gon as he dodged to a side to avoid the cannonball shooting at full speed. Half a second later, another cannonball came and Gon dodged to the other side...Only to have spikes falling at him, so he somersaulted down the passageway rapidly. Only when he heard the last of the spikes fall to the ground, did he rest for a moment to take in what happened.
"This Excitement course really is packed full of fun," laughed Gon out loud to himself. He stood up to brush down his clothes and heard what seems to be a trickle of liquid. A droplet landed on Gon's forehead and he reached up to touch it.
"Is that water?" pondered Gon. "Where is it coming from?" He looked up and saw a neat hole in the ceiling. A steady stream of water flowed from it.
Two meters from either side of Gon, stone walls fell down, blocking Gon's path to go forward and backwards. Gon went to one of the walls and pounded his fists against it.
"It looks pretty sturdy to me, I don't think I will be able to break it."
Gon looked back up at the ceiling. The water was flowing faster now, spurting out from the hole and its level reached up the Gon's ankle.
Knocking on the wall in different places, Gon tried to find a weak spot which he could bash through but with no luck. The water was now up to his thighs. Gon moved towards the other wall. After realising this wall also had no weak spots, he started repeatedly hitting at it with his fishing rod.
"This isn't working, there must be another way though," said Gon. "I don't think they will want to drown their candidates without giving them a chance...Right?" He laughed nervously and looked down at the water which was filling up at a much faster rate and had already reached to his stomach.
"I only have another five minutes at most before this whole space will be filled up."
One minute passed, then another, and another. Before Gon knew it, the whole space was filled up right to the ceiling.
I can hold my breath for almost 10 minutes, thought Gon. Alright! I can do this. It'll just be like swimming in the lake at Whale Island, except I am very deep underwater and not sure where I'm going…
Whilst thinking to himself, Gon fumbled around here and there, trying to look for a clue, it didn't help that it was pitch black. His fingers trailed along the surfaces, and then he found them curling around a handle. He had found it.
Right next to the hole in the ceiling, there was a tiny, ring shaped handle. Being underwater, made it ten times more difficult to pull . Gon was reaching his limit. He could feel that painful feeling of constriction in his chest, and if he could see, black spots would be appearing before his eyes. However, with a bit of frustrated kicking and an adrenaline rush, Gon managed to throw open the trapdoor and he gasped in the air when he emerged.
"Hurspuffff…."panted Gon, as he pulled himself out of the trapdoor, soaking wet and then threw himself, tummy down, on the floor.
"That…was….a..bit too much for… me…Never..again…"
After a minute when he had regained his breath, he looked up at his surroundings. He was in another corridor, directly above the one that he came from, and exactly the same. He rolled over on his back and moaned. "This is never ending!"
In response to Gon's comment, came a growl not very far away. Gon sat up, wondering what it was this time.
From the shadows, three black wolves emerged. Tongues hanging sideways from their mouths and eyes wet with hunger. The flames from the wall torches reflected in the eyes, dancing.
"Uh-oh," was Gon's reply.
And he began running.
"Just my luck to get the boring one," sighed Killua, but deep inside, he knew what he was thinking, and what he was saying, didn't match. Deep down inside, he knew he was glad he didn't get the Nightmare route.
"That stupid Kiri, spilling her secret out," said Killua angrily, kicking a stone out of his path. "Doesn't she realise it could threaten her career? Well not that it will make too much of a difference if people know, it's not like it'll stop her from killing them."
He paused. "Agh, why am I thinking about assassinations right now?! And Kiri?!" He shook his head as if to get rid of the thought.
"Well anyways, when I see her again, I'll apologise to her," decided Killua. Thinking about it, Killua realised they hadn't had an argument like this in a long time. Kiri never cared much about anything enough to argue about back at Kukuroo mountain. Killua's earliest memories of Kiri were her blank, dark eyes; carrying out assassinations without a question. If Killua hadn't made that step to talk to her, he was sure she would now be Illumi version two.
Rumble.
"Huh?" Killua looked back down the passageway, where he came from. The low rumbling was getting louder, and Killua noted that hear four sets of footsteps running quickly towards him. Squinting, he could make out a figure coming nearer and nearer.
"...Gon?" said Killua, looking at the soaked boy with a questioning look.
"No time to explain, Killua, we have to run!" The two boys starting running side by side.
"Why are you here Gon?!"
"I'm not sure, but when I realised these guys were after me, I started running. But then I reached a dead end so I broke the wall and carried on running!"
Looking behind, Killua saw the three wolves loping after them.
"Why don't you just deal with them, Gon? They're just wolves," said Killua.
"But that's too cruel! I'm sure originally they're not bad creatures but were captured and made to do this!" opposed Gon.
"I could do it for you."
"No!"
The youngsters argued before Killua finally cracked and spun around on his heel. Facing the advancing wolves, he knife handed the three creatures hard enough so they fell unconscious, but not hard enough to harm them.
Killua turned to look at Gon. "Happy now?" he sighed.
"Yep!" grinned Gon. "But that was a surprise, I thought Killua would like animals. Seeing you have Kiri."
Killua looked at the smiling Gon for a moment.
If she told someone, then I can tell someone too. Even though it's not my secret to tell. This makes us even.
"Gon...About Kiri…" Gon looked at him with large, questioning eyes. Killua took a deep breath.
And started explaining.
