Bellamy began backtracking through the woods, calling out Clarke's name.
"Clarke! Clarke!"
"…Bellamy!"
Bellamy's head spun around when he heard a thin voice come through the trees.
"Clarke? Keep talking—I'll follow your voice!"
"You can't—Bellamy,"
Bellamy didn't listen to her and kept following the sound of her voice, taking large strides in her direction.
"The area is rigged with land mines from the last nuclear war."
Bellamy went through a thick patch of trees and finally found her, precariously standing in the middle of a clearing.
"Clarke, why didn't you call out?" he began to walk towards her.
"Careful! Watch where you're stepping! Bellamy! There!"
Bellamy looked down just in time to avoid stepping on another land mine.
"Dammit Princess, how did you get yourself in this mess?" he muttered.
He strode up next to her and began examining the mine underneath her foot.
Her voice wavered, "It will go off when my weight is removed."
Bellamy shook his head, "There's got to be a way to disable it. We can move to replace the weight—you'll step off and I'll put something down on it."
"What are you going to find around here that weighs as much as I do? These mines were precise—anything less than the original weight will still discharge it."
Bellamy sighed heavily, "At least your not dead yet."
Foreign shouts began to echo through the trees, moving closer to their location.
"Grounders," Bellamy yelled, "Clarke you have to get out of here."
"Bellamy, how? Go! You, go!"
He stood up and took her arms, "I'm going to put one foot on the mine, and then on the count of three you're going to step off as I step on. Then you're going to run."
Clarke shook her head violently, "No, what about you? I won't leave you."
Bellamy pushed himself closer and placed one foot on the mine between Clarke's feet. Clarke tried to push him off the mine, but he was stronger than her and held her arms tightly.
He leaned in close, "Clarke, I already lost Octavia, don't make me watch you die too."
"Hebtang relier!" the voices were closer still.
"Don't do this, Bellamy."
"It's already done, Clarke." He knew she wouldn't step off willingly, so he did the only thing he could think to do…and if he was being the honest, the only thing he wanted to do before what could very well be his last moments.
Closing the inches between them he kissed her. It was tender and everything he thought a kiss should be. He heard her sigh as he pulled away. He opened his eyes and saw that hers were still closed.
"Clarke, run."
Clarke opened her eyes and looked down—she was standing on dirt and leaves…and Bellamy was solidly on the land mine.
