Chapter 9
Addy sat in her motel room, looking through the video of the first victim's death for what felt like the hundredth time. When she was about to give up she noticed something that she hadn't seen before. She freeze framed it and went back. Her eyes widened at the screen and she practically leapt off the bed and went out the door with her laptop in hand. She frantically knocked on the brother's door. Dean opened it.
She shoved past him, opening the laptop back up and setting it on the table," I was watching the video of the first guy who died with that car and I noticed something. I freeze framed it and just look."
Sam and Dean crowded next to her and she pointed to the man in the video who disappeared after a second.
"He's there one second and gone the next," she said," And I know it's blurry but I'll bet you top dollar that's James Dean."
"So we got Abraham Lincoln, and James Dean?" Dean asked.
"Famous ghosts?" Sam offered.
"We've dealt with crazier," Addy said," And there's a bunch of lore on famous ghost."
"Yeah, but now we got two of 'em? Two extremely pissed-off ghosts?" Dean asked, obviously frustrated.
"Who are apparently ganking their fans," Sam added.
"What do you mean?" Dean asked.
"Professor Hill was a Civil War nut. He dug Lincoln," Sam said, reading off a web page.
"And that other guy spent a lot of time searching for Little Bastard," Addy said," He had to have been a fan."
"So you're saying we've got two super-famous, super-pissed-off ghosts killing their...super-fans?" Dean asked, trying to rationalize it.
"That's what it looks like," Sam answered.
"Well, that is muchos loco," Dean joked.
"Muy," Addy corrected, only half listening as she searched on her computer," Not muchos."
"Yeah, well, the big question is, what the hell are they doing here?" Dean asked, rolling his eyes at her.
"Ghost usually haunt the place they live so Abraham Lincoln at the White House and James Dean at a race track," Sam said.
"So what they hell are they doing here?" Addy asked.
Not too long after, Sam mumbled," You gotta be kidding me."
Dean and Addy stood behind him and looked at his view on the screen.
"You gotta be kidding me," Dean repeated.
"I hate this job," Addy mumbled.
SUPERNATURAL
Addy walked through the wax museum, her eyes flickering everywhere. She rubbed her arms as goose bumps formed. She stopped in front of a statue of Lincoln and frowned as he seemed to stare back. She doesn't notice when Sam comes to stand next to her.
"Kind of creepy, huh?"
She jumped away from him," Damn it. Don't do that."
Sam looked at her with a raised brow and studied her cautious demeanor," Are you scared?"
"No," she said quickly," I just don't like these places."
"Wax museums?" Sam asked with a chuckle.
"Boo," Dean said, coming up behind her and she jumped again. She turned around and hit him as he laughed.
"You've fight monsters and you're afraid of wax?" Dean asked, still laughing.
"I'm not scared," she mumbled, backing away from him.
She bumped into one of the wax figures and she jumped away with scream.
The two brothers laughed at her as she pushed past them, walking away.
"Where are you going?" Dean asked as she walked out.
"Anywhere but here," she called over her shoulder.
SUPERNATURAL
Addy paced the front of the wax museum, waiting for Sam and Dean. They finally came out.
"So what'd you find out?" she asked.
"He's got stuff that was owned by our ghost," Sam said.
"Okay so salt and burn," she said with a shrug.
"We have to come back," Dean said and she stared at the glint of mischief in his eye.
"Oh no," she said, shaking her head.
"Oh yes," Dean replied with a smile," We're coming back tonight."
She sighed, "I hate you."
"Why are you afraid?" Sam asked.
She sighed," I was seven years old and I went on a field trip to a local wax museum. There had been a fire there a few years ago and rumor was they kept all the burned wax figures in a storage closet. A couple of my classmates thought it would be funny to lock the weird girl in there while I was trying to find the bathroom."
"What happened?" Dean asked.
"I had a little breakdown while I was surrounded by figures with half burned faces," she admitted," And I…had to…still…you know…use the bathroom...so I did."
"Damn kids are mean," Dean said.
Addy nodded," You have no idea."
"You don't have to come with us," Sam said thoughtfully.
"I'm not letting you guys go in there alone," she said with a scoff.
"Okay fine just don't come crying to us if you wet yourself," Dean teased and she glared at him.
SUPERNATURAL
As they walked through the museum, Addy could feel the tension between Sam and Dean. All the way from the motel to the museum they'd been like this. She'd definitely missed something and she had a feeling it was bigger than they were letting on.
Dean went for Lincoln while Sam got a trashcan. She pulled out the salt and a lighter. He put the hat on his head and turned to them," Four score and seven years ago, I had a funny hat."
Addy rolls her eyes and pulls the hat off his head," Can we just get out of here?"
"We can't have any fun with this?" he asked with a pout as she tossed it into the trash can.
"Let's just torch the objects, torch the ghosts, and get outta here. Okay?" Sam asked and she glanced between them.
"I'll go grab East of Eden's keychain," he said, walking out and leaving her and Sam together.
"Are you okay?" she asked him and he looked surprised.
"Didn't know you cared," he answered and she sighed.
"Of course I care," she choked out.
"Really?" he asked," Because every time I bring something up you shut me down."
"Yes, I do care, Sam," she said, slightly offended," Why do think I'm still here? I could have easily left the minute you screwed me three times over but I didn't. I'm still here. What does that tell you?"
"That you're here for Dean," he said quietly.
"I'm here for both of you," she said.
"How am I supposed to know that?" he asked," You ignore me, you won't talk to me, you're always-"
"Wait, did you hear that?" she asked.
"See this is exactly what I'm talking about. You -"
The double doors Dean had went through slammed shut and they exchanged a look, going for their guns. She went towards the double doors and tried to open them but it didn't budge. She could see her breath and before she could turn back to Sam she was flung across the room and into an exhibit scene where she knocked over a bunch of figures.
"Addy," Sam called after her and his gun went flying out of his hands. Suddenly, arms were wrapped onto his neck as he struggled for breath.
Dean burst in as Addy picked herself up.
"Is that Gandhi?" Dean asked.
"Dean, forget about that and get the glasses," Addy called to him and ran to the trash bin with Lincoln's hat. He tossed her the glasses and Sam managed to shake Gandhi off him as she set it on fire. He disappeared and Sam turned back to them, gasping for breath.
"You couldn't have been a fan of someone cool?" Dean asked as Addy and Sam stared at him," Really? Gandhi?"
SUPERNATURAL
Addy packed up her things in her room. Looking around, she sat on the bed with a sigh. She hadn't mentioned the dream to Sam or Dean yet and she didn't plan on it. He couldn't find her and he was her monster to deal with.
A knock sounded at the door.
"Who is it?" she called out.
"It's me."
Slowly, she went over to the door and opened it to reveal Sam.
"Do you think I can still do this?" he asked, barging in.
She closed the door slowly and turned back to him," Do what?"
"Hunt," he replied, pacing back and forth," Be a hunter."
She frowned," Isn't that what we're doing now?"
He shook his head," You know what I mean."
She shrugged, walking towards him," Well, you're trying but it'll take awhile before things can get back to what they were."
"But things will never go back," he said in a broken voice," Dean blames me and he's right to but he can't move forward. I'm the true vessel of Lucifer and you…you can't even look at me."
"I'm looking at you now," she offered.
"No," he said, standing in front of her and she fought not to back away from him," I mean the way you used to. The way you used to look at me told me how much you loved me and now I can see you fighting just to be around me without wanting to run away. I can see how you still care but it's so mixed with fear and anger and regret that it's unrecognizable."
She shook her head, giving him a sad look," That's…I'm just trying to figure things out and it has nothing to do with you."
He looked away, tears welling in his eyes," That's a lie and you know it."
She gently put her hand on his shoulder and turned his head back to look at her," It doesn't matter how I feel, Sam. I will always care about you. Don't you ever forget that. No matter what you do and no matter how far you fall I will never let you be alone again. I made that mistake. I saw the consequences and I am not willing to see it again. I told you I'm not just here because of Dean. I'm here for you too, Sasquatch. Always."
He pulled her to him, pressing his lips to hers.
At first she responded to the all too familiar touch, but when she felt his hands on her skin she was brought back to reality and she pushed him away.
It only took him a second to realize what he'd done was wrong.
"Addy, I'm-" he began, walking towards her but she backed away.
"It's okay," she said quickly, her voice indicating it was anything but," I should finish packing."
"Angel, please," he begged.
"Sam, please don't call me that," she pleaded without looking at him," Just go."
He took one last look at her and slowly walked out. It was only when she heard the door close did she let herself take several deep breaths..
"No," she whispered to herself through the short puffs of air," Keep it together."
She got her control back and wondered how she'd ever gotten this weak. The smallest thing could send her reeling to the point where she couldn't breathe.
However, that hadn't been a small thing. Sam had kissed her. It shouldn't have happened. She couldn't believe it'd happened. She wasn't trying to come onto him but he thought she was. What was wrong with her?
She couldn't comfort him without him thinking she wanted him back. Maybe it was because deep down there was a part of her that did. Old feelings die hard. Hers refused to die. Under all the bad she felt towards him she couldn't neglect all they'd been. The love they shared and how good they were together wasn't something that went away. Not now and possibly not ever.
She wanted to move on but there was a small part of her that was pulling her back. Sam was her source of solid ground and when he'd hurt her she'd been on the shifting ground she'd been on all her life. For the longest time she had no one to fall on but this time she had Dean. It was cliché but how could something so right be this wrong?
She cared so much for him and she knew he loved her. As much as she wished otherwise he did and so did his brother. It was a difficult route to navigate. She had loved Sam and on some levels she still did, but Dean was hard to resist at times and it was gradually getting harder, but he was always there for her. He was her new solid ground and she was pushing him away.
Suddenly, it dawned on her. She was pushing Dean away. The one person who hadn't let her down was worried about her and she had pushed him away.
As if on cue her phone rang and Dean's name flashed on the screen.
"I'm sorry," she blurted when she answered it.
There was a long silence before she heard him say," I know."
She smiled. He knew her way too well. Maybe that's why she pushed him away. Sam knew her too and look where that'd gotten her. She couldn't treat Dean like he'd done something wrong. He was the way she was going to get through this at the end of the day.
She sighed in relief,"Thank you…for everything."
"Any day princess," he said and she heard the smirk in his voice," As much as I'd love to hear you apologize more we've got another vic."
SUPERNATURAL
Addy sat outside with Dean in confused silence while Sam is in the morgue going over a body of one of the victim's. They were at a dead end and had no idea where to go from where they were. Two teenage girls were currently in hysterics over the fact that their friend was kidnapped by Paris Hilton.
"So what do you think could be doing this?" Dean asked.
"At this point I'd actually believe that Paris Hilton's gone crazy and begun kidnapping her fans," she said with a shrug," This is nothing I've ever dealt with."
He groaned, "Same here."
They slipped back into silence.
"I thought I'd have to keep harassing you to get you to talk to me again," he said after a few moments," What made you change your mind?"
She thought about lying to him, but knew it would create nothing but problems. The way she saw it, she either told him now or waited for it to blow up in her face.
"Sam kissed me," she said, searching his eyes for his reaction.
She could tell he was sorting through his emotions for a good response but only said," Why?"
She took a deep breath," After you two fought he came to me. I was trying to comfort him but it came across wrong."
He nodded, looking away from her," Did you kiss him back?"
That wasn't the question she was expecting," For a second but I pushed him away."
He didn't answer.
"Why does it matter?" she asked, trying to get him talking again and she knew the moment the words left her mouth that not only did she have the answer but it was a really stupid question.
He scoffed, "Why do you think princess? I'm whipped over you. I couldn't get over you if I tried and believe me I tried. The fact that you kissed him back hasn't changed a thing about that."
It was her turn to look shocked..
"You know I can't even talk to a woman without comparing her to you," he said and she continued to stare at him," They're never you. Never as kick ass or smart or funny or gorgeous and it sucks because I'm selfish enough to want you and you're smart enough to know it'd be a disaster."
"It's not that I'm smart, Dean," she finally said," It's that I can't risk what it could do to you and…and to Sam. I know you'd never admit it but I know how much it hurt for you to see me with him and I can't let Sam feel like I abandoned him when he's fighting off Lucifer's proposal. He needs us and we need him. "
He was quiet for a short time and then said," It hurt but I lived with it because I knew you were happy. If being with Sam again is what it takes to get you back to you than I'll deal with it. "
Her heart skipped a beat at his words. The air seemed to have fled from her lungs.
She gulped," Dean, the person I was with Sam isn't someone I can be again."
"Who do you want to be?" he asked, staring into her eyes.
"The person I am when I'm with you," she said, forgoing the consequences of her words.
Gently, he took one of her hands and intertwined it with his.
"Dean, I can't…" she said, looking down.
He knew what she was going to say and made her look at him again, "I'm not asking you to. Not right now."
She stared at him and slowly her mouth turned into a smile.
He scoffed," You know there is definitely something special about you because I sound like something out of The Notebook."
She laughed," I wasn't gonna say anything but yeah, you do."
He let go of her hand as they smiled at each other and the moment was over.
"I can't believe I missed it," Sam said walking over to them and they both stood up quickly.
"Missed what?" Dean asked.
"Went back over the other two vics. There was blood loss. Major," he replied, refusing to meet Addy's eyes.
"Oh, well, being a gory smear will do that to you," Dean commented.
"No, I-I mean more blood loss than a-a car crash or a head wound should cause, almost like it…" he struggled for an explanation.
"Something fed," Addy finished.
"Yeah," Sam agreed, briefly glancing at her.
"Awesome," Dean commented.
"And then," he began, pulling out a plastic bag filled with small, black objects," There were these."
"What are those, seeds?" Dean asked, inspecting it closer.
"Yeah. They were in both vics' bellies," Sam said and Dean dropped the bag.
"I hope you washed your hands," he said with a grimace.
"I've never seen any seeds like this before," Addy said, unphased by their origin.
"Wow, just when I thought you two couldn't get any geekier," Dean said.
Sam and Addy both laughed at that and then their eyes met. In the brief moment, she knew they had a lot to figure out, but they'd be okay in the end.
SUPERNATURAL
Addy sat on one of the beds in Sam and Dean's motel room engrossed in research.
"Yahtzee,"Sam said at the same time she said," Bingo."
"What do you have?" she asked, looking to him as Dean sat up on the opposite bed.
"The seeds aren't from around here. In fact, they're not from any tree or plant in the country," Sam explained.
"Where are they from?" Dean asked.
"Eastern Europe," Addy answered," From a forest in the Balkans, but it was cut down a few decades ago."
"So?" Dean asked, not following.
"So, local legend has it that the forest was guarded by a pagan god whose name was Leshi. Um, a mischievous god who could take on infinite forms…" Sam began.
"And liked to include his fans in his diet book," Addy finished," He could only feed on the blood of his worshippers so he'd drain them and put the seeds in them."
"So how's he doing it? What, he touches James Dean's keychain and then morphs into James Dean?" Dean asked.
"It's as good a guess as any," Sam said with a shrug.
"Doesn't matter," Addy replied," We know how to kill him. We chop off his head with an iron axe."
"All right. Let's go gank ourselves a Paris Hilton," Dean said.
Addy looked at him and blinked," That's not the weirdest thing I've ever heard."
SUPERNATURAL
Addy searches through the wax museum in the dead of night after splitting up with Sam and Dean. Every step she took seemed to make more noise than usual as she combed through the building. She came across a wax figure of the devil and stopped. It was the cartoon version with horns and a red tail, his face twisted into an almost comical sneer. It shouldn't have bothered her but it did.
She heard a whistle and followed the noise to Sam and Dean who'd found a door that was blocked off for viewing because of renovations.
They broke the latch and pushed the door open. They moved through a plastic sheet to find a room decorated as a forest with a white house and a man wax figure standing in a suit on the front porch of it.
"Hey," Sam says and she turns to see he'd found the missing girl.
Before she can even say anything, she feels a hand over a mouth and she's dragged away swiftly. She briefly hears Dean call her name before her head's knocked into one of the trees.
SUPERNATURAL
Addy wakes up and struggles a bit before she realized she was restrained. She turned to see Sam and Dean in the same predicament. She followed their line of sight to see the Leshi as Paris Hilton sharpening her nails with a knife.
"Oh. I'm so glad you're awake for this. This is gonna be huge," she said and Addy rolled her eyes.
"No way in hell I'm letting Paris Hilton finish me off," she mumbled.
"I've been stuffing myself with fast food lately. So it's nice to do the ritual right. Prepare a nice, slow meal for a change," she continued, ignoring her.
"Just like the good old days, huh?" Sam asked, stalling.
"You have no idea. People adored me. They used to throw themselves at me, with smiles on their faces," she ranted.
"Yeah, I guess these days nobody gives a flying crap about some backwoods forest god, huh?" Dean challenged.
She stopped filing her nails and gave Dean a threatening stare,"No. Not since they cut down my forest and built a Yugo plant."
"March of progress, sister," Dean replied.
"For years now, I've been wandering. Hungry. Scared. Scrounging for scraps. So not sexy," she said and Addy scoffed.
"But then, the best thing ever happened," she said, putting the knife down and they all tensed," Someone tripped the apocalypse. And I thought, what the hell, I'm tired of watching what I eat. I wanna pig out. So I found this little place. It's awesome. Adoring fans stroll right in the door."
"Yeah. But they're not your fans," Sam said.
"So? They worship Lincoln, Gandhi, Hilton...whatever. I'll take what I can get," she said, standing up and going over to Dean.
"No, you, you people, you're the crazy ones. You used to worship gods. But this?" she scoffs," This is what passes for idolatry? Celebrities? What have they got besides small dogs and spray tans? You people used to have old-time religion. Now you have Us Weekly."
"I don't know, I'm more of a Penthouse Forum man myself," Dean joked as she got closer.
The Leshi looked to Addy and then back to Dean's panicked look," You look like you'd make a good meal, pretty girl."
"Maybe but you can't eat me," Addy said with a smirk," Not a Paris Hilton fan or a fan of anything for that matter."
She stared her down," They don't have to be famous. A friend, acquaintance…"
She paused and looked to Dean," Lover."
"Hate to break it you but he's not my lover," she said smugly.
"He doesn't have to be," she said and turned to Dean.
"Get away from him," Addy yelled at her.
The Leshi simply chuckled and turned back to her," Do you know who you're talking to little girl?"
"No, but I have a feeling you're gonna tell me," she said with a smirk as she walked towards her and grabbed her by the neck.
"I'm a god," she practically growled in her face," You should be bowing down and worshipping me. You should be grateful that you get to service me. Who are you to tell me anything? You're nothing."
"If I were you I'd let us go," Addy said, any traces of sarcasm lifted from her voice.
"Or what will you do?" she challenged.
Suddenly, the Leshi fell to her knees, gripping her head and screaming in pain. The ropes broke from all three of them and Dean grabbed the axe off the ground.
"What are you?" she sobbed out, staring at Addy as blood poured from her eyes, nose, and mouth.
"Definitely not a little girl," she said and Dean swung. Her head rolled away and her body fell the opposite direction.
"Addy how did you do that?" Sam asked.
"She pissed me off," she said with a shrug," Now can we get out of here? This place still gives me the creeps."
SUPERNATURAL
Addy packed up the last of her stuff. Dean and Sam were waiting outside for her. She lightly brushed back the curtain to see them talking to each other. It looked like they were working things out and as she turned she smiled to herself.
She waited until they were done and left the room with her things. Walking towards the Impala, she looked between both of them with a smile.
"Everything good?" she asked.
The brothers exchanged a brief look and Dean answered," Yeah, we're good."
Sam searched her eyes, "Are we okay?"
She nodded and gave him a small smile," Of course."
They start to get into the car, but Dean turned to Sam," You wanna drive?"
"You sure?" Sam asked and Dean tossed him the keys.
"Yeah, I could, uh...I could use a nap," Dean said.
As he got in she shot him a look.
"What?" he asked as she smirked at him.
"Dean Winchester's a big 'ol softy, isn't he?" she said with a wink and slid into the car.
"Shut up," he mumbled to himself, but smiled anyways as they drove off.
As Addy sat in the passenger side she settled into deep thought. She'd hid it well last night, but she'd scared herself. In fact, she was terrified.
