Infinity and Beyond

-Chapter 30-

Girl's Best Friend, Part One

"How could you do this?" Mommy says to Michael unhappily as Alex is watching. "You know we were planning her escape and now you're sending her on an oversea's mission?"

"I'm not sending her anymore." Michael shakes his head. "By the time Percy looped me in, she and Jaden have already been picked."

"You could have fought it." Mommy says.

"On what grounds?" Michael says. "You want Percy to start asking questions? It would put her in more danger."

Mommy's silent for a moment. "We do it tonight then."

"What?!" Alex sounds very surprised.

"Fake your death." Mommy says, sounding as if she really wants something. "Car accident, like we said. Your ID packets are all ready to go. Stage it on the way to the airport."

"Out of the question." Michael says as he stands up. "We've a very tight window on this mission and losing Alex would jeopardize that."

"This mission?" Mommy scoffs. "A Division mission."

"It's a good mission." Michael nods.

"Good for who?" Mommy says. "Percy?"

"For our country." Michael says. "This nerve toxin can be used in a terrorist attack."

"Or to fill Percy's pockets." Mommy crosses her arms.

"He won't get his hands on it." Michael says. "It's designed to completely incinerate the toxin."

I look up from playing with my Play-Doh. Alex looks as if she's just remembered something. "What if it killed me too?" She walks over to mommy and Michael. "We're supposed to blow up the lab, right? What if we faked my death on the mission?"

"That's too risky." Michael sighs before looking at mommy. "Nikita, that is too risky."

But mommy just looks at him with a smile, making Michael nod as if he can't believe something. "So that's how you want to do this?" He scoffs. "In the middle of an operation, with Division monitoring?"

"Kind of makes it sweeter." Mommy mutters with a smile before shaking her head and looking at Michael. "Not the point. Listen, if she blows up on foreign soil, it's not like Percy can send a bunch of cleaners to sift through rubble. She'd die a hero too. All we're talking about is altering the exfil. Could work."

"As long as the original mission gets finished." Michael says.

"So we can do it?" Alex raises an eyebrow.

"Yeah." Michael sighs as if he really doesn't want to do something.

"Yes." Mommy smiles widely as she turns around to look at Alex. "As long as we don't step on Division's toes." She says before looking back at Michael. "Right?"

Michael just smiles crookedly before mommy walks away...

After Alex and Michael leave, mommy walks over to me and sits down on the floor in front of me with open arms. "Come here, sweetie."

I bite down on my red lips as I smile. I crawl over to mommy before she pulls me into a tight hug. I don't know why, but mommy looks a little unhappy...

"Mommy play with me?" I say as I hug her back.

"Sure." Mommy smiles a little as her arms are still wrapped around me. "What are we playing?"

"Mommy make me fries?" I say as we break from the hug before I hold up my play-dohs.

"Alright." Mommy chuckles before I tilt my head up towards her and kisses her on the cheek. She seems a little happier now...

"I love you, mommy." I say as my lips brush her face and neck.

"I love you too." Mommy smiles as she lowers her head and kisses my lips...

Yay! Michael's back! "This is your com unit." He tells mommy as he gives her a little black thing after it makes a beeping sound. "Use that device, it will override Division's channel. Birkhoff will never hear a thing. You, me, and Alex will have a separate frequency during this operation."

I walk over to Michael and pull on his arm. "Up please." I raise my arms towards him as he looks down at me. He smiles a little as he bents down and picks me up.

"Got it." Mommy mutters.

Michael looks back to mommy. "You're right about the weapons's lab. The ventilation room up top, which is by the house, you can leave the exfil kit there, like you said. Told Alex about it." He says all of this while mommy's putting on a shiny black jacket.

Mommy doesn't seem happy. "Perfect."

"Mommy, what's wrong?" I tilt my head quietly, making her look at me softly.

Mommy reaches her arms out towards me. "Come here, sweetie."

I reach my arms out towards her too as she picks me up from Michael's arms. I hug mommy. "Is mommy sad?"

Mommy hugs me back and rubs my head before looking back at Michael. "You put the mission before Alex." She sounds a little angry. "Because deep down, you've always believed there's something good about Division."

"There is." Michael says.

Mommy kisses my cheek before putting me back down on the floor and speaking up again. "Really?! All these years, Percy's manipulated you."

"Percy will pay for what he did, trust me." Michael sounds a little scary... "But Division has done more good than most people will ever know."

"Like what?" Mommy says angrily, sounding as if she can't believe what she's hearing. "Taking kids off the street and turning them into killers? Or brokering girls like sex workers. Alex and Jaden were picked out of a catalogue, by a sociopath..."

I squeeze my almond-shaped dark brown eyes shut tearfully as I put my hands over my ears. Something in my chest feels as if it's about to jump out. I don't like it when grown-ups raise their voices, it scares me...

"And they're about to get inside where nobody, not the CIA, no one can ever get." Michael says.

"This is what I'm talking about." Mommy says. I'm glad she doesn't sound as angry anymore...

"You don't want to stop this nerve agent." Michael says. He doesn't sound angry either, so I move hands away from my ears and open my eyes again. I sniffle as my eyes are still wet and I'm crying a little...

"I do." Mommy nods. "Of course I do. I just don't think there's anything good about Division."

"That can change." Michael almost smiles.

"Michael, I love you." Mommy sighs and shakes her head. "I just hate where you work."

"And you want me to hate it too?" Michael raises an eyebrow.

"Yes!" Mommy's voice suddenly grows very loud, making me shrink back and whimper tearfully as I cry a little more than before. "Mommy, you're scaring me..."

Mommy looks down at me before crouching down in front of me with a sad smile as she picks me up again. "Sorry, sweetie." She kisses my forehead quietly before sitting down with me on her lap.

"You know, when I was in the Navy, I felt like I was a part of something much bigger than myself." Michael says as he crouches down in front of me and mommy. "And that didn't change when I joined Division. I need to know, that there's something for me to protect, something worth protecting. It's a part of who I am."

Michael holds mommy's hand before continuing. "And that's also you and Infinity..."

There's a moment of silence as I'm still trying to understand what's happening. But there's another beeping sound, and mommy quickly stands up, picking me up with her. "We'd better get going." She says before walking away.

I tilt my head silently. Is mommy mad at Michael?

Mommy and I watch from a little further away as Alex and Jaden walk out of a truck with some other women. After they've all gone inside a big building, mommy steps out of the car before opening our car's back door.

She unbuckles me before picking me up and shutting the car door. "Mommy, where are we?" I ask, but mommy just puts a finger on her lips, silently telling me to be quiet.

Mommy's still holding me in her arms as she hides behind trees. It's nighttime, so everything's dark and scary. I squeeze my eyes shut and hug mommy tightly.

Mommy stops walking before I open my eyes a peek. There's a man who's closing the doors on his van. Mommy waits until the man's gone before she starts running...

She runs down a snowy hill before stopping to open a glass door that looks a little smaller than other doors and stepping inside.

'Alex is talking to Nikita through her ear piece.' Computer mama says before telling me what Alex is saying. 'Nikita, it's me. I'm on the private curb.'

"We're on schedule." Mommy says. "The exfil kit is in the ventilation room. One more thing, once you're free, you're gonna have to be alone for a while. I know you'll be smart, and I know you'll be careful, but please be strong for yourself. God knows you've been for me."

After that, mommy looks at me with a smile as she's still holding me in her arms. "Alright sweetie, we're gonna wait in here for a little while, okay?"

"Okay." I nod.

"I didn't bring any toys or storybooks so..." Mommy says.

"It's okay." I shake my head with a grin as I hug mommy and gives her a BIG kiss on the cheek. "I like being with mommy the most! I love you, mommy!"

"I love you too." Mommy chuckles before kissing me on the lips. "No matter what."

But just then, mommy stops smiling. 'Alex is talking to her.' Computer mama says before telling me again what she's saying. 'We need to talk. Meet me in the ventilation room...'
