Head over Feet
Original Song: "Head over Feet" by Alanis Morissette
I had no choice but to hear you.
You stated your case time and again.
I thought about it.
I glare at the annoyance sitting beside me. "Haven't you heard of personal space?"
"I'm not in your personal space. If you want me to, I can always sit on your lap," Allen said around a mouthful of mitarashi dango.
Lavi fell in the floor, unable to breathe because he was laughing too hard. Lenalee had a video camera in her hand, pointed at Allen and me.
"You have issues," I mutter. "And stop touching my leg with yours!"
Allen pouted as if he was an innocent angel. The liar. "But I can't help it! I want to be close to you!"
"Would you shut up?!" I snap. He opens his mouth, but I stand and walk away before he can say anything.
So of course, we have to bump into each other in the training room.
"Are you stalking me or something?" I ask as I stare at the whitette. He shrugs. "Maybe it's just destiny for us to be together."
"Stop spouting that crap!" I growl.
"Why won't you just listen to me?" he asks. When he walks closer to me, I step back. This continues until my back hits the wall. Allen smirks as I curse.
"Baka Moyashi," I say so he would stop…whatever he was trying to do.
"BaKanda," he replies.
We stare at each other. I notice how long his eyelashes were and how they framed his large, chromium eyes. His hair fell in a way that partially hid his scar while the color matched his pale skin. I never really considered what other counties' standards were as far as beauty, but in Japan, pale skin and large eyes made one gorgeous. Well, for girls.
Allen reaches for one of the long strands of hair that frames my face and strokes it. "Your hair is so beautiful."
Much to my irritation, my cheeks heat up. I turn my head to the side. "Shut up."
You treat me like I'm a princess.
I'm not used to liking that.
You ask how my day was.
Stupid Komui, putting me on a mission with him of all people, I grumble mentally. Even my book didn't distract me from the fact that I had to share a room with Allen. And a bed. Curse all those travelers for taking the other rooms.
Allen walks in the room with a bag on his arm. I peek over the top of my book, curious as to what he bought. When he begins to pull sweets out of the bag, I lose interest and continue to read.
Suddenly, something lands beside me. I glance at it. Dark chocolate and mint. Dang him….
"Jerry told me you liked it," Allen said as he crawled onto the bed with a Twix bar. I turn back to my book. "He lied."
"Really?" he asks. "Come on, Kanda, everyone likes some form of sweetness."
"Not me."
"Kanda, I went to five different stores to find that!" he whines. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see his pouty lip and watering eyes.
I sigh and close my book before I set it on the nightstand. "Then eat it. Your garbage disposal of a stomach would appreciate it."
I lie on my stomach and close my eyes. If I can meditate….
"What do I have to do to for you to eat it?" Allen asked. I feel something warm press against my side.
When I open my eyes, silver orbs stare into mine. I growl, "Get off me."
"I'm not on you."
"You're cuddling me."
He changes the topic. "I won't tell that you like chocolate. I just want to do something you like for once."
"If you want to do something I like, go sleep in the street."
Allen narrows his eyes. "I'm not going to leave you alone until you at least bite it."
And he means it, too. I curse and grab the bar. I'm going to kill Jerry. Allen even knew the brand.
I unwrap the end of the dark chocolate, mint-filled bar and nibble it. Once I swallow, I grumble, "Happy?"
"I don't know. Did you like it?" he asks.
"No one finds out, or else you won't wake up one day," I threaten before I bite the end of the chocolate bar.
Allen beams. "Okay!"
I roll my eyes. "Moron."
He doesn't reply and begins to eat his Twix. I glance at him. "How can you eat that?"
"Huh?" he asks, confused.
"It's so sugary," I comment. Allen smiles. "That's what I like about it. I'm not a fan of dark chocolate though. Too bitter."
"And to think you have a crush on me."
"Opposites attract."
"We're humans, not magnets."
Allen stares at his left hand. "Are we? Human, I mean? Exorcists eat, drink, and sleep, but we're treated like robots."
"The last thing you are is a robot," I mutter against my better judgment. "If you could be compared to anything, it'd be a white wolf."
His eyes glitter as he looks at me, Serious Allen gone. "Why is that? Why white?"
I turn my head. "White wolves are more beautiful than gray or black ones. They're protective of the ones they care about to the point of dying for them. They look soft and cuddly to the outside world, but they can be ferocious. And at the same time, they can be playful."
"Really?" Allen asked. I don't reply. He continues, "Then you're a bat!"
"What?" I ask blankly, staring at him.
He smiles. "Bats are my favorite animal! And they're really cute! They live in large groups, but do better on their own. They're often misjudged and hated when they do so much good for this world. And they take care of their babies really well."
"I'm not sure if I should be offended or not," I mutter and take a bite of what remained of my chocolate bar.
Allen frowned. "It was a compliment."
I nod and say sarcastically, "Right. Next time, I'll be sure to call you a naked mole rat."
Later that night, I lay awake in bed, my eyes on the full moon outside. I ignore the stirring next to me…until arms wrap around my waist.
"Moron, what the heck are y―?!"
"I meant it as a compliment."
I still. "Are you still stuck on that?"
Allen gently forced me to lie on my back. "Kanda, I'm serious when I say I'm in love with you. I want to make you happy."
I don't reply for a moment.
You've already won me over in spite of me,
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet.
Don't be surprised if I love you,
For all that you are.
I couldn't help it.
It's all your fault!
"I love you," Allen whispered before he looked to the side. I curse and jump on him, taking him to the mattress.
"Kan―?!"
"Shut up," I growl. "Just shut up!"
He stares up at me, his arms still around my neck from where he'd held on to me when I tackled him. His silver eyes glimmer in the moonlight. "Are you mad?"
I glare. "I should be."
"Then why aren't you?"
"I don't freakin' know!" I hiss as my hands clench the sheets next to Allen's head. After a moment, I lean down until my lips brush his ever so lightly. He whispers, "Are you going to kiss me or not?"
"Stop talking like Thompson Square," I mutter and roughly press my lips to his. He tasted like chocolate and strawberries as his lips moved against mine. The hands previously on my back weaved into my hair. I slide my tongue along Allen's bottom lip, and he opened his mouth. Our tongues push against each other, neither of us giving to the other.
We break apart a moment later. Allen smiles as if I'd told him I loved him back. "Does that mean you love me?"
"No!" I growl and quickly bury myself in the blankets again, my back to him. "Go to sleep."
I feel him press his back to mine. "Goodnight. Thanks for the kiss."
With a curse, I kick his thigh and smirk when he yelps. Unfortunately, arms pull me down to lie on my back, and a parasite curls up in my side. "Just for that I get to cuddle on you."
"On me?"
"Well, you won't cuddle back, but I don't care."
Against my better judgment, I allow him to nuzzle into my side, and despite how much I yelled at myself mentally, I couldn't help but feel better with him there. I mutter, "I hate you."
He exhales and pulls the blanket up over us before he slings an arm over my stomach. "Hate you, too."
Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole.
You're so much braver than I gave you credit for.
That's not lip service.
I glance at the parasite clinging to my arm. "Did I say you could follow me around?"
Allen smiles and holds my hand more tightly. "No. When did I say I would wait for permission?"
I don't reply.
After we get our food, we sit at the table in the back of the cafeteria with Lenalee and Lavi.
"So you finally cracked?" Lavi asked as Allen sat so close to me that our arms and legs touched.
"No," I mutter.
"Really?" Lenalee asked. "You look pretty content with him pressed against you like that."
Allen kissed my cheek. "He's just shy."
"I'm not shy, Baka Moyashi!" I growl, but I don't mention the kiss.
And Lavi obviously noticed that fact. "Oh, so he did crack you!"
"Shut up!"
Allen, who had eaten everything he had gotten in less than five minutes, forced my arm around his shoulders and pressed himself even more closely to my side. I let him stay there, too irritated to care.
Lenalee smiles. "Impressive, Allen."
I glare. "There's nothing to say 'impressive' about!"
"It took a lot of work, but it paid off," Allen replied, completely ignoring me.
You've already won me over in spite of me.
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet.
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are.
I couldn't help it.
It's all your fault!
Morning walks always soothed me. Autumn leaves crunched under my boots. Sunlight streamed through the pine, oak, and maple trees. A light breeze whispered through the leaves and my hair. I sigh in contentment.
"Oh, you poor thing!"
The voice caused me to growl, yet my heart lightened slightly. I follow the soft cooing around several trees and bushes until I find the source.
A small fox whimpered, its foot caught in a trap. Allen scratched behind its ear while he poked the trap. "It's okay. I'm going to get you out of this."
I climb into a small tree and sit in a fork in it. Allen held the fox in his lap and quickly tried to unknot the rope around its foot. The creature whined and attempted to pull away, but the whitette scratched it some more. "Just a little longer."
He slowly pried the crimson rope out of the raw flesh of the small fox. The animal whimpered again and cuddled closer to Allen. He smiled and stroked it.
"So fox taming is your hobby?" I ask. Allen looked up at me. "And climbing trees is yours?"
I jump down and walk toward him. "Not really."
"Wait, don't come closer," he said quickly and nuzzled his nose into the fox's fur. "You're scary to small animals."
I scoff. "I wish. Then you would be scared."
"I'm not a small animal."
"You're right; you're a parasite."
He glares, tufts of red fur covering his silver eyes. The fox gazed at me with amber eyes, almost as if it thought I was being mean to its…friend..? Whatever Allen was to it.
I roll my eyes and move closer slowly. After a sit next to Allen, the fox limps over to me and gives me a sniff. It then falls over against me. I glance at Allen. "What's it doing?"
He gives me a blank look. "Really?"
"You're the soft and cuddly one."
"She wants you to love her!"
"She? Did you check her tail?"
"Yes, I did," he says. "I shall name her…'Haven'."
"Very nice," I mutter sarcastically. Haven looked up at me expectantly. With a sigh of defeat, I scratch behind her ear while she closes her eyes. Allen snuggles against me. And I let him.
"You're awfully agreeable today," he comments.
"I'm not awake enough to breathe fire yet."
"Excuses, excuses."
"It's how I get by."
You are the bearer of unconditional things.
You held your breath and the door for me.
Thanks for your patience.
After the little fox scampered away, Allen laid in my lap instead. Literally.
"What are you doing?" I ask as he plops down in my lap, arms around my neck and legs perpendicular to mine. He smiles. "You're the one who called me a parasite. I'm just following your instruction."
I close my eyes and focus on not punching him. It could be worse. He could have straddled me. With that in mind, I open my eyes. "You aren't supposed to like being called a parasite."
"I don't, so I'm showing you what a real parasite is."
"Don't drink my blood," I growl. He laughs. Dang, I love his laugh.
My eyes widen from the thought. I turn my head and feel something soft and moist on my neck. When I realize what it was, I shake Allen off of me completely. "Stop kissing my neck!" I rub the area. "It's creepy."
For the first time in a month, Allen stood and walked away. "Stupid jerk."
"Where are you going?"
"The Order."
I chuckle and point in the opposite direction. "The Order's that way, Baka."
"I knew that," he muttered and stormed past me. Despite my internal conflict, I follow him. The wind ruffled his short hair. His hips swayed ever so slightly as he walked, gloved hands curled into fists. Geez, he was seriously mad, wasn't he?
"What are you going to do when you get back to the Order?" I ask and fall into step beside him.
"I don't know." He said it flatly. I continue, "Would you want to train?"
"With you? Hardly."
"Talk about turning one-eighty."
Allen cursed and stepped in front of me. His silver eyes blazed. "You're mad at me?! I've been throwing myself at you for over a month! You keep saying how much you hate it, but you never back it up! Make up your mind already and let me know what your choice is!"
I stood, frozen and wide-eyed, as he stomps away from me.
Allen ignored me at lunch and dinner. I wanted to be happy that he finally left me alone, but I only felt a void somewhere in me. The whitette left as soon as he finished eating at dinner. Once he was gone, Lenalee and Lavi glared at me.
"What?" I mutter.
"Don't play that," Lenalee accused. "What did you do to Allen?"
"Nothing."
"Kanda―"
"It's not my fault he's not acting like his usual annoying self."
Lavi put his hand over Lenalee before she could yell at me. He looked at me seriously, single orb focused on me. "Kanda, he's heartbroken. Everyone knows you feel the same way but refuse to accept it. He came to me throughout his attempts to get pumped up again. You never noticed how much it hurt him every time you pushed him away."
"He'll get over it. I don't feel the same way and never will."
"So that kiss was nothing?"
I glare at him. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"That's low, even for you," Lavi said and gathered his plates. "Leading someone on and then pushing them away."
You're the best listener that I've ever met.
You're my best friend,
Best friend with benefits.
What took me so long?
After a moment of hesitation, I knock. A few seconds later, Allen opened the door. "Lenalee, I already told you I'm f―"
He cuts himself short when he sees me. I hope I don't look like Lenalee. He leaned against the door frame, eyes closed and shaking his head. "Why are you here?"
"I wanted to talk to you. May I come in?"
He nods and walks inside. I close the door behind me. Allen sat on his bed and took a sip from his water bottle before he set it on the nightstand again. "So what did you want to talk about?"
I stand on the other side of the nightstand and lean against the wall. "I wanted to apologize for―"
"Very funny," he muttered. "If Lenalee or Lavi put you up to this, just leave."
"They didn't."
"I doubt you're here of your own accord."
"When did you become so cynical?"
"Only when it comes to you."
"You haven't been the last month or so."
"Ever heard of acting? Looks like I'm pretty good."
"So you lied about everything?"
Allen shook his head. "Acting is different from lying. Everything I said was true."
I sigh and move to sit beside him, much closer than I was comfortable with. Our legs touched and arms brushed. "Then you can imagine how weird it was for someone to go to five stores to find one chocolate bar for me. Or say I'm like a bat. Constantly say he loves me."
"For you, I'd say it is weird. Most people are smart enough not to fall for an emotionless jerk, especially when that jerk is you."
"Ouch. What happened to the lovey-dovey stuff?"
"I'm done throwing myself at you. Besides, I doubt you're even capable of love," he says.
"Then I'll prove you wrong."
Allen opens his mouth, but I cut him off with my lips. He tackles me, and we fall back on the bed. I move my lips against his softly, unlike our first kiss. I wrap my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck. He smirks against my lips and pushes his tongue into my mouth. We fight for dominance, but neither wins as I pull back for air.
I've never felt this healthy before.
I've never wanted something rational.
I am aware now.
I am aware now.
"Was that an apology?" Allen asked. I look away. "Maybe."
"Does that mean you love me?"
"Maybe."
"If you do love me, are you ever going to tell me?"
"Probably not."
He sighs and wiggles out of my grip just to lie next to me. I turn off the lamp and slither an arm around Allen, his back to my chest. Moonlight lit the halo over his head as I kissed his crown. "Goodnight. I hate you."
A chuckle leaked from his lips. "Hate you, too."
You've already won me over in spite of me.
And don't be alarmed if I fall head over feet.
Don't be surprised if I love you for all that you are.
I couldn't help it.
It's all your fault!
