Chapter 40
Sam sat with his back to her as he reclined on the hood of the Impala, drinking a beer. Slowly, she walked towards him and took a seat next to him.
She took a deep breath, "I could make you stay. I could look into your eyes right now and stop you from saying yes."
Silence was her answer before he replied," And what's stopping you?"
"You," she said, meeting his eyes, "For whatever reason you think you need this. You think you need to prove yourself and I'm telling you in one last desperate effort that you don't. What you did is not who you are. Yellow eyes, Brady, Ruby, Lucifer…they don't know you. They don't know the real you. Please Sam…just…just don't say yes."
"I'm sorry," he whispered back and she turned away, shutting her eyes tightly, "I just want you to be okay with-"
"I will never be okay with this," she said simply, "but I'm not stopping you."
"I'm sorry," he repeated.
"I don't want a sorry. I want you to stay."
"Why?" he asked calmly, "I cheated on you with a demon. I lied to you. In the end I killed you. I broke your heart into a million pieces and all the while your soulmate was my own brother and deep down I knew it. I was just too selfish to let you go so tell me...why are you trying so hard to make me stay?"
He said all this in a tone that was genuinely curious as she stared at him. He really couldn't understand her reasoning behind her care for him.
"We're different, Sam," she replied, staring at him, "From the moment we understood what that meant we've known we are different. We were scared little kids unable to understand why the world made us so angry and why the world was so angry at us. You are the only person I've met to know what it's like to have this deep pit in your gut that you were only meant to do bad things and every day we woke up and we fought it. We fight it every day and damn it Sam we have fought too long and too fucking hard for it to end with you giving in."
They sat in silence until Dean joined them, grabbing a beer from the cooler at his feet.
"Dean? What's going on?" Sam asked.
"I'm in," he said and Addy sat in silence, her hands shaking.
"In with…" Sam asked almost as if for assurance.
"The whole up with Satan thing. I'm on board."
"You're gonna let me say yes?" Sam asked in shock.
"No. That's the thing. It's not on me to let you do anything. You're a grown, well, overgrown, man. If this is what you want, I'll back your play."
"That's the last thing I thought you'd ever say."
"Might be. I'm not gonna lie to you, though. It goes against every fiber I got. I mean, truth is... You know, watching out for you... it's kinda been my job, you know? But more than that, it's... it's kinda who I am. You're not a kid anymore, Sam, and I can't keep treating you like one. Maybe I got to grow up a little, too. I don't know if we got a snowball's chance. But... But I do know that if anybody can do it... it's you. "
"Thank you," Sam said in relief.
"If this is what you want... Is this really what you want?" Dean asked in one last effort to get the truth.
"I let him out. I got to put him back in," Sam said and Addy looked down and shook her head, "Addy you know this is the right thing."
"I don't give a damn what the right thing is," she said simply and walked off.
SUPERNATURAL
The Impala sped down the road. Dean driving, Sam in the passenger seat and Addy and Cas in the back sound asleep.
Cas snored lightly and Dean said," Aw. Ain't he a little angel? "
"Angels don't sleep," Sam said gravely.
"Sam, I got a bad feeling about this," he said with a sigh.
"Well, you'd be nuts to have a good feeling about it."
"You know what I mean. Detroit. He always said he'd jump your bones in Detroit. Here we are."
"Here we are," Sam repeated.
"Maybe this is him rolling out the red carpet, you know? Maybe he knows something that we don't?" Dean asked, glancing at Addy in the rearview mirror. If anything went wrong she was in danger.
"Dean, I'm sure he knows a butt load we don't. We just got to hope he doesn't know about the rings," he assured him and figured now was as good a time as any to ask him," Hey, um... on the subject, there's something I got to talk to you about. "
"What?"
"This thing goes our way and I triple Lindy into that box you know I'm not coming back," he said carefully.
"Yeah, I'm aware," he said simply.
"So you got to promise me something," Sam began.
"Okay. Yeah. Anything. "
"You got to promise not to try to bring me back."
"What? No, I didn't sign up for that. "
"Dean-"
"Your Hell is gonna make my tour look like Graceland. You want me just to sit by and do nothing?"
"Once the Cage is shut, you can't go poking at it, Dean. It's too risky," Sam pleaded.
"No, no, no, no, no. As if I'm just gonna let you rot in there."
"Yeah, you are. You don't have a choice," Sam deadpanned.
"You can't ask me to do this," Dean pleaded.
" I'm sorry, Dean. You have to."
"So then what am I supposed to do? " Dean asked genuinely needing to know the answer.
"You pray to God Addy's dumb enough to spend the rest of her life with you. You go live with her and her family and you have barbecues and go to football games. You go live some normal, apple life Dean," he said and Dean was silent, "Promise me."
He glanced to Addy who was now awake and met his eyes in the rearview mirror. She gave him a small nod.
"I promise," he said, the words coming out wrong.
SUPERNATURAL
Bobby came jogging up to them in the alleyway, "Demons. At least two dozen of them. You were right something's up."
"He's here," Addy said shakily, "I can feel it."
Dean walked away to the trunk of the Impala to get the demon blood they'd gotten for Sam.
"I'll see ya around, kid," Bobby said to him, knowing it wasn't the case.
"See ya around," Sam replied and hugged him tight.
"He gets in... You fight him tooth and nail, you understand? Keep swingin'. Don't give an inch," Bobby ordered, holding Sam out at arm's length.
"Yes sir," Sam said and with one last longing look he released Bobby and turned to Cas, holding out his hand, "Take care of these guys, okay?"
"That's not possible," Cas replied.
"Then humor me," Sam said with a sigh.
"Oh. I was supposed to lie. Uh... Sure. They'll be fine," Cas lied uneasily.
"Just stop taking," Sam replied and Addy chuckled as he made his way to her.
"You don't have to do this," she whispered, holding herself as she stared with pleading eyes, "We can walk away right now and figure something else out. "
"And if we don't?" he asked sadly.
"Then screw it the world ends," she said, tears finally spilling over, "Don't do it…please…please."
He looked away from her as she cried, "Addy please don't cry."
"I can't help it, Sasquatch. You're my family and my best friend and I love you," she said with a quivering lip and wiping at her eyes, "Please Sam."
He pulled her into his arms and she let his size envelope her in comforting warmth, "I never could say no to you when you cried."
"So you'll stay?" she asked in a broken whisper.
"I have to do this," he said, regret in his voice as he kissed the top of her head.
She took a deep, shaky breath and stopped the tears with ease. She pulled away and he searched her eyes, "Promise you won't try and get me out."
She stared at him, unable to form an answer.
"Addy," he said, putting his hands on her shoulder, "Promise me."
She still didn't reply.
"Fine if you won't do that then promise me you'll make sure Dean gets out and stays out," he said and she nodded slowly, "And you two go have a life together. I couldn't give you that when Dean went to hell but he's stronger than I am."
"I didn't want that when Dean went to hell and all I want now is for you to be here," she whispered.
He gave her a sad smile, "I'm sorry, Addy but I have to do this. I'm so sorry."
"Okay," she said with difficulty and gently kissed his cheek, "Give him hell Sasquatch."
"I learned from the best," he said and she took one last deep breath and he walked away to go to Dean and the trunk full of demon blood.
"You mind not watching this?" she heard him ask and soon Dean joined her by her side.
"You okay?" he asked and she shook her head.
"This isn't fair," she whispered and he pulled her to him.
"Maybe you shouldn't come in there with us. If Lucifer-"
"No," she said quickly, "I'm with you guys until the end. I'm not leaving either of you."
I wasn't long before Sam cleared his throat and slammed the trunk shut as he took a deep breath and said, "Okay. Let's go."
He walked past Dean and Addy and they hurried to catch up to them as he made his way into the street and yelled, "All right! We're here, you sons of bitches! Come and get it! "
It wasn't long before two demons came outside.
"Hey, guys. Is your father home?" Dean asked smugly.
SUPERNATURAL
They were dragged all the way up to the top floor and shoved into a frigid cold room. Lucifer stood wistfully staring out the window and she couldn't help but feel trapped.
"Hey, guys. So nice of you to drop in," he said without removing his gaze from the window. He puffed out a breath of air and the pain froze as he drew a pitchfork on the condensation, "Sorry if it's a bit chilly. Most people think I burn hot. It's actually quite the opposite."
"Well, I'll alert the media," Dean said sarcastically.
Lucifer turned to them, his face covered in red sores, "Help me understand something, guys. I mean, stomping through my front door is... a tad suicidal, don't you think?"
"We're not here to fight you," Sam spoke.
"No? Then why are you?" he asked in genuine curiosity.
"I want to say yes," Sam practically growled.
"Excuse me?" Lucifer asked in what seemed like genuine surprise.
Sam inhaled and closed his eyes. The two demons dropped dead in a flash of light as Dean moved closer to Addy out of reflex.
"Chock-full of Ovaltine, are we?" Lucifer said, clearly amused.
"You heard me. Yes," Sam repeated and Addy met Dean's eyes, her heart hammering so loud she was sure Lucifer could hear it.
"You're serious," Lucifer said in surprise.
"Look, Judgment Day's a runaway train. We get it now. We just want off."
"Meaning?"
"Deal of the century. I give you a free ride, but when it's all over, I live, he lives, you leave Addy alone, you bring our parents back-"
"Okay, can we please drop the telenovela? I know you have the rings, Sam."
Just like that the glass shattered. He was too confident about it. They needed to get out.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Sam said, trying to keep up the façade.
"The Horsemen's rings? The magic keys to my Cage? Ring a bell? Come on, Sam. I've never lied to you. You could at least pay me the same respect," Lucifer said, smug to have bested them.
"Sam," Addy warned, looking for a way out.
"It's okay. I'm not mad. A wrestling match inside your noggin... I like the idea. Just you and me, one round, no tricks."
"You win, you jump in the hole. I win... Well, then I win…and I get her" he said, pointing to Addy and she looked from Dean to Sam with wide eyes, "What do you say, Sam? A fiddle of gold against your soul says I'm better than you."
Sam looked to Addy and she gave him a nod before she could change her mind.
"Sam," Dean said in a warning.
"We don't have any other choice," Sam said gravely.
"No," Dean yelled at the same time Sam said, "Yes."
A flash of light blinded them all and blackness surrounded them.
SUPERNATURAL
Addy was the first one to open her eyes and that was good because she had to be the one to do the spell.
"Dean," she said, shaking him slightly and he opened his eyes as she stood up and walked towards the wall. She threw them to the wood and it stuck as she chanted,"Bvtmon...Tabges...Babalon."
A cavernous hole appeared where the rungs had been and air whips her hair around as Dean wakes Sam.
"Sammy!" he yelled over the noise.
"Dean!" he called back as they stood up together, "I can feel him. Oh, god!"
"You got to go now! Come on!" he pulled him towards the hole and pulled Addy back, "Go now, Sammy. Now! "
Addy stared at the back of his head and whispered, "That's not Sam."
Dean whipped his head towards her just as he turned to them with a cruel smile, "I was just messing with you. Sammy's long gone. "
Lucifer turned his back to them and Dean pulled her close as he chanted, "Chdr bvtmon tabges babalon" and the portal closed, the horsemen rings flying into Lucifer's hand.
He turned back to them and began stepping towards them as Dean held Addy close.
"Say you're goodbye."
"No," she said, tears welling her eyes, "No please. Don't take me away from him. Don't-"
Before she could even finish her sentence she vanished along with Lucifer leaving Dean to crumple to the ground in grief.
SUPERNATURAL
Addy sat slumped on the floor, her wrist bound by chains to the ground and a strip of cloth tied around her mouth. Tears fell from her eyes as she stared down at nothing.
Lucifer kneeled down in front of her and she met his eyes that couldn't possibly be Sam's because they were so cold, "I wish you'd smile."
She didn't answer. She just stared at him and tried to imagine it was Sam.
He pet her hair gently, "You're so much prettier when you smile…just like Lilith. She was so beautiful when she smiled."
"But you are not Lilith," he said, smoothing hand over the side of her cheek and she didn't care enough to flinch away, "You're you and I have to say. Much, much better. So much stronger."
He sighed as she continued to stare blankly at him, "It must hurt having the hope of defeating me ripped away. I should've made it clearer to you. There is no winning against me. Any move you make I was prepared for."
She still showed no signs of emotions other than the tears that continued to fall.
"You spent some time in hell with Dean so I assume you know how it works. Ten years down there for every month up here," he said with a sigh and a far off look, "but in my cage it is so much longer. I myself can't even fathom the time. An infinity in there and you know how I spent the time…plotting. I thought of every single thing that could go wrong and made plans upon plans to counter them. I thought of everything that could possibly stop me from fulfilling what I wanted so now you must understand…failing was the only thing you could've done."
"My sweet, sweet Adriana," he said and kissed her forehead, "You and I are going to have so much fun together and I promise eventually you will come to love me as I love you."
He pulled the gag from her mouth and she whispered, "How can you love me when you don't know me?"
He smiled, "I've known you all your life. Every time you cried because you were different, every time you were alone because no one saw how amazing you truly were, every heartbreak, every teenage fit of rage I was there. Can't you see? Can't you feel what I feel?"
She leaned close to him, so close he thought she was finally giving in, "All I feel is hate. I hate you."
"No you don't," he said, looking down at her lips, "You don't hate me and it frightens you. You fear me and I anger you but you don't hate me."
"Think again," she growled, "and I don't care how many plans you thought of. If the Winchesters can't defeat you than I will."
He smirked," You'll be spending eternity by my side. Think again."
"Then I'll spend eternity trying to kill you."
He grinned, "I'm looking forward to it."
He violently smashed his lips to hers and she bit his lips so hard she tasted blood. It didn't stop him. His grip came down her hip and he gave it a rough squeeze. She kicked at him and shoved at his chest but she had to remember she couldn't do any serious harm. This was Sam. This was her best friend.
Finally, she managed to head butt him but it only enraged him further. He grabbed her hair and hauled her up as she cried out. He pulled the chains from the floor and dragged her down a hall to a door which he kicked open. He threw her down on an old bed, the old sheets rough with age. He reattached the chains to the bed frame above her head. She pulled at them frantically as he got closer and closer to her.
"The sooner you stop denying what's inside you the faster this stops becoming difficult," he said in an almost gentle tone and once again his rough kiss was on her lips and his body, Sam's body, on top of hers.
Screams of frustration escaped her as he kissed her neck and began unbuttoning her shirt, "I hate you! I will never stop! I will always hate you!"
"Fine by me," he replied and she could hear the exhilaration in his voice as he came back up to her, "Maybe if you allowed yourself to let go of all those pesky inhibitions we wouldn't have this problem."
"What are you gonna do?" she challenged through clenched teeth, "Beat me? Burn me? Kill me? Because it's all been done before and I can tell you now I will never stop fighting. I will never stop hating you. As long as I live. As long as I breathe that will never change. I will never give in to your sick little fantasy."
He pulled away from her and sat up slowly as she stared him down, "Give it a few decades. You'll get over it."
He got up and began walking away, nearly making it to the door before she called after him, "You won't win."
He turned back, "We'll see about that."
With that, he slammed the door shut.
"You watch you son of a bitch!" she screamed after him at the top of her lungs.
