"He can what?"
"That's what I said!"
"So, have you told him that I can understand all of you yet?"
"No, why?"
"I have some questions to ask him. Don't tell him yet, though. I think I have just the way of getting to this dog." Blythe walked into the day camp of Littlest Pet Shop. "Hello there Lucky. I have a few questions for you, if you don't mind."
"Woof"
"Perfect. I think I may have figured out why you and Zoe are having communication issues. You don't speak dog...because you speak English!" Lucky reeled. How did this girl know his secret? He looked toward Russell, who shrugged.
"I think she's got you. How do you plan to deny that?" Lucky shook his head. If he talked, he could compromise the whole Pound Puppies organization, but if he didn't that girl wouldn't stop watching him, so his mission would fail. It was a fine line to walk, but he had to make a decision.
"You got me." Blythe shot up into the air, cheering. "I speak English. You can't tell anybody though." Blythe laughed.
"I don't plan to. I can understand pets, and I keep that a secret."
"You can...understand pets?"
"Yup. Thanks to that dumbwaiter over there. I crashed it when I first moved here, and since then, I've been making very unique friends. Like you!"
"Say, you wouldn't know why I was sent here, would you?"
"Sent here? What are you talking about?"
"I'm part of the Pound Puppies organization, a group of dogs who are responsible for getting puppies that are in the pound adopted as soon as possible. We usually only deal with dogs, but there have been a few exceptions…"
"And you were sent here by your superiors for some mission?"
"Yup, pretty much."
"I don't know, maybe to meet with me, to connect our two worlds? Since I can understand pets, you were probably meant to come here, and talk to me, and not explain this whole dogs can talk thing, and I wouldn't know any better."
"I suppose that may have been the point. What I want to know, is why Zoe can't talk."
"She just never learned, I guess."
"Well, I would like to amend that, if we get the time."
"Sure, I'm sure Zoe would love the opportunity to have more people hear her music, but let's get back to business. Do you have any idea why you may have been sent here?"
"I have no idea, that's just it. If there was a phone I could use, I could call HQ, but at the moment… I don't know what I'll do."
"I have a phone you can use. Just give me the number, and I'll dial it. Then you can have a chat with your HQ, and we can all have some answers."
"Alright." At that moment, Mrs. Twombly walked in.
"Oh, Blythe, since you're in here anyways, can you give the pets their snack?" Lucky's stomach growled loudly.
"Sure." She handed out the snacks, then got Lucky a large bowl of kibble.
"Hello? Pound Puppies Headquarters? This is Lucky. I'm on a special mis-"
"Lucky, oh hello darling. Let me get you through to the top dog."
"Oh, alright then."
"Hello, Lucky, is that you?"
"Ah yes, I was calling to ask ab-"
"Your cover is secure, and you need the intel for the second half of your mission, yes?"
"Well, sorta."
"What do you mean, sorta?"
"Well, the human that I was supposed to meet about help…"
"Blythe, the girl who can understand animals, what about her?"
"I wasn't informed that she could understand animals, and so I blew my cover."
"What? How did you not know that she could understand animals?! It was all in the dossier for the assignment!"
"Yes, it was probably in the first folder. The one that I wasn't given, nor was I told anything regarding the intel within. I believe my team was mislead into believing that the intel in the first folder was a mission overview, and therefore was not to be shared with me."
"Argh! this is bad, this is bad, this is terrible! What are we going to do?! The whole Pound Puppies organization has been compromised!"
"Uh, excuse me Mr. Top Dog, sir. I have no plans to share any of the information regarding the Pound Puppies or anything like that to anyone. Just like all the other information that I've gained through my ability to understand pets, the Pound Puppies will remain a secret. I swear."
"Really? You don't plan to share this information with the rest of the world?"
"No. Why would I? I mean, sure, it's cool that you guys can talk, but that's your secret, so I have no right to give it up. As for Pound Puppies, well, I think it's nice that you're keeping your arms open, and you're helping puppies that need help. So, what's Lucky here for?"
"Hmm, let me see, it's here somewhere...ah! The Biscuit family has be-"
"Did you just say Biscuit family?"
"Yes…"
"Oh great, this is just great."
"As I was saying...the Biscuits have been adopting puppies left right and center. Too many puppies. We've lost a few of our best agents to them, and we need somebody to go in and figure out what's going on. That's where you come in Blythe. You know the Biscuits, and we thought you might be able to get Lucky into their mansion to do some investigating."
"Well, as much as I don't like the idea… I'll see what I can do."
