Challenge 6746: Boston Witches OR Why does Maura Isles know so much about magic?
I have recently discovered the show 'Rizzoli & Isles' about the tough female homicide detective Jane Rizzoli and her best friend, quirky and genius-level smart Chief Medical Examiner Maura Isles, and I would LOVE a crossover!
In Season 2, Episode 7 'Bloodlines', a couple of witches are murdered in Salem, and Rizzoli and Isles are investigating the case. The details are not that important, just know that :
1. Maura Isles is extremely knowledgeable about witchcraft, black magic, Wicca and everything connected with it.
2. To explain the 'superhuman strength' of one suspect, the detectives consider her being on PCP. (I couldn't believe my ears!)
My challenge:
The murders in the Wicca community alert the New Slayers and Watchers Council, and somebody is sent to investigate. It should be a witch, so maybe Willow, but Dawn or an OC is fine as well. She is accompanied by at least one slayer, and both have to interact with the Boston detectives.
Want:
1. An explanation why Maura knows so much about witchcraft (maybe she is a witch, or knows about the supernatural in some way)
2. Rizzoli having a hard time believing in anything supernatural, but being convinced by the evidence presented to her.
3. A Rizzoli Isles pairing.
4. IF you pair Willow up with Kennedy, make her (Kennedy) a real character, not the stereotypical bitch - I think she would have grown up.
5. A supernatural reason for the murders (which is different from the actual episode).
Would like to see in the Story:
1. Buffy being a part of the witch/slayer team that investigates the murder in Boston.
2. Some tension between Buffy and the Scoobies for them throwing her out of her house in the series (I always thought it implausible that most fics just ignore that betrayal)
3. Ilyria (LOVE HER! Maybe she was the sole survivor of the final Battle and came to Buffy as the only other adequate fighter - beside Faith)
Do NOT want:
1. Willow the uber-witch
2. Too much Xander (can't stand the git)
Other than that: Have fun!

Part 36 Circle the wagons
The call came in. He looked down at his phone. With a slight frown he listened as his team leader called him. It seemed that this hunt was being canceled. It was a shame really. He looked back at the tall brunette he had been following and cursed. She would have been a lot of fun to play with but orders were orders. 'Well sweet heart it looks like you just got lucky.' He rang off and pulled his cap down over his eyes and laid a twenty on the counter of the old dinner. It would more than pay for his pecan pie and it was a decent tip as well. Besides the council would reimburse him and given they canceled his fun he did not mind sticking it to them. There was also the fact that he wanted the waitress to have pleasant memories of him on case he ever got to return to finish his work.
"You all come back now you hear." The young waitress said. She had a smile on her face as she pocketed the tip. It was clear his ploy worked.
He gave her a quick smile and said. "Oh I will be back one day." While he might not hunt this girl for pay well he did have lots of vacation time coming and maybe just maybe he'd return and indulge himself. It was not like the hick matter to the Council she was in this back water and given the local they had no need for a slayer. Who cared if some hicks got eaten by the once in a life time vampire here in Bon temps Louisiana. He strode out and climbed into his big rig. It was a good cover driving a truck and it made some extra cash but it was a complication when he needed to be someplace fast. At least he was empty now. He called into his dispatcher and stated he had a family emergency in Boston. It would by him time to be off the road.
"Look Jim Bob my uncle needs me. He's elderly and broke his arm. They won't let him out of the hospital without someone there. I need to take a few weeks off. Come on now I've rarely taken any time and you are the one who said I need a vacation. No I am leaving the truck at my cabin and will fly up. Look Jim Bob I'd hate to have to quite but … Thanks I knew you see reason. So my vacation got scrambled a bit. I know I'd rather be fishing too but this is family. I'll call when I know more to when I can come back." With that Evan Molex hung up. While the money was good and the flexibility to travel the country legitimately and do council business sometimes dealing with that damned hick dispatcher made it complicated. He pulled out gunning his engine. He had to drop the truck and head out before Jim Bob realized he could drive a load of something to Boston.

He read the text message:
Need you in Boston Promptly.
'Damn and here I thought I had an easy job for once. Oh well I can see why the bosses want us there.'
He swung his back pack onto his back and put his phone inside his pocket. He ran dodging several people toward the parking lot. As he got into his rental car he called upon the internal computer. "Siri find the me a flight out of O'Hare to Boston book me preferably business class."
"Yes Sir it leaves at 3 pm."
"I'll take it please book two tickets as I need to pick up a friend." Edward Cunningham said as he drove toward the Airport. It was a good thing his bag was in the car.
"It is done sir." The computer responded.
"Thank you now please give me direction to the Aquarium I am need to pick up Hester."
"They are programmed in to the GPS sir." Came the reply. Cunningham nodded and followed them. He just hoped Hester was successful getting that damned witch she had been so evasive. Learning she had a sister that worked at the Aquarium was their last shot. Hopefully the bitch reached out the sister. If not well then this hunt be a bust as he had not been allowed to kill his target. Of course the cancel order might be a good thing as it would draw attention if a police officer's ten year old handicapped daughter was killed. Maybe he had caught a break?
Post read the incoming texts and smiled. "Travers I have about a dozen of our wet works teams coming in. The rest are still on the hunt. So far this month they taken down two targets and located several more both wild potential and witches."
Travers nodded. He looked away. He never really wanted to know how many were killed. While he knew it was vital and that point had more than been driven home in the past few years with Woods, Cohan and finally the Summers chit it did not mean he liked ending innocent lives. He might be a cold and pragmatic bastard but he hated the attention and the risk multiple kills allowed for. It was just a damned good thing that the Americans and even the Canadians never communicated effectively about crimes. That and the fact that the wet teams were smart enough to mimic the serial killers that America seemed to have in such abundance.
"Good I think we should stop all hunting for the time being and regroup. I have been considering your suggestions and frankly Jonas we need to deal with the SWC. So perhaps we should have the teams regroup and restock for the coming battle."
Jonas post smiled and nodded. "I send word out to do just that." He turned from Travers and began sending out the messages.

As they looked at the pictures on the board Jane had set up Buffy frowned and suddenly looked very ill. Turning to the group she asked "If the old council was killing potentials here…."
"Then they were likely doing the same thing around the world…we need to let Xander know so he can check back home and around the world." Faith said. "Red can you get a Xander on the line?"
"Yeah I'm on it and Giles should I have Scotland Yard contact them?"
"Yes and we should and perhaps contact our other allies."
Willow used her laptop to send messages to Andrew and Xander in London. With the news of the killings across America the SWC was not worried about the possibility of potentials and witches being killed across the world.
"Maybe they should contact Dr. Isles." Frankie suggested. While he was one of the newest detectives in the BPD he could connect the dots as fast as anyone. "We need a coordinated effort and if our case is the most recent then we should help connect the dots."
"Frankie is right." Korsak said." Lt. Cavanah, Jane we might need to call in the feds as well."
"I'll make the call." Sean said he looked disturbed by this idea. How could anyone seek to kill innocent children? The idea sickened him. There was no logical reason for it. He walked to his office and closed the door. His team looked at him sadly still debating on if he should be brought fully into the loop.
"We should tell him." Frost said softly not wanting the others not in the know to hear he despite the fact that they said they were here to help was wary of their new allies. "I mean I know he knows about the fuglies but does he know about the SWC and these killings?"
"Hey the killings are not being done by the SWC," Willow said offended. "The old council were bastards who used people as tools unless of course you were in their elite club."
Barry raised a brow his expression clearly saying he was not so trusting of the new comers. He glanced at Jane who seemed quiet. Jane was clearly considering all angles of the case and not jumping to conclusions.
Willow glared. She was offended not so much for her and Giles but for Buffy and Faith. They both put so much on the line at young ages too. They did not deserve to be distrusted. "The slayer has no option in becoming one or they didn't until the spell activating them all. It was always the luck of the draw which might be why the Old Council killed off so many potential so they could control the one who was called. It never struck me as being kosher that so many people would give up their children to some creepy old men. In the old times maybe because they may have been able to kidnap them with impunity in modern times not so much unless they were from some distant land where the law could be bought and sold. In the United States and the west well it never made any sense to me. That being said we never force anyone to join the SWC we offer to help train them and we offer a safe place to come for those who are called when needed, we remove their slayer powers at
their request. No one is drafted anymore so there is no need to kill a slayer who is not up to the job."
"Girls are still forced into the role if they took the chance and said yes."Korsak replied. "I know that you offered a choice but how many really understood what was being asked of them?"
This time before Willow could respond Buffy did. She rose anger clearly showing. "They all did. I showed them my life, Faith's life and what we were up against Detective. They all knew that if we fell they would be up next to defend the world. The difference between us and the so called powers is that we empowered many rather than one who would have to fight and die alone. They had a chance to find and join other slayers. Yes some may have still ended up alone but they at least knew there were others out there. It was far more of a choice and chance then I was given or even Faith because at the time Faith believed she was the only one."
The detectives had the grace to look a little ashamed but they still felt that the current heads of the SWC should have known about this situation and should have addressed it sooner. However the anger they saw on Buffy's and Willow's faces forestalled them for now.
Maura's phone rang and she answered listening with care. "Catherine it's good to hear from you. Yes please send whatever information you have to my computer. Do you still have my address?"
There was a pause and Maura said. "Thank you your help will be invaluable. I am afraid this case is bigger than we believed so far several jurisdictions have been in contact. I'll send an email once we know the scope this may become a federal investigation we seem to have a serial killer or group of them at large."
In Los Vegas Catherine Willows paled at this. She cursed as she looked at the four files they had already found. "Well I am sending what information we have to you. I'll check with the L.A. and the other west coast cities maybe I can coordinate the search on this side of the country."
Maura was about to refuse when it dawned on her that this could become a massive investigation on the scale never seen before. "Please that would help a lot. One moment please."She covered the phone and looked at the group. "Los Vegas has offered to coordinate the west coast searches. Are you going to send anyone out there to check into what they find?"
Buffy looked over at Faith who seemed suddenly as worried as the M.E. was. It was Faith who answered. "B we have to send teams out to each location one slayer minimal and a witch. This could be a nightmare."
Buffy paced for a moment thinking fast then she turned to look at Dr. Isles and said. "We will send teams it may take a few hours for them to get out there. They will be coming. Kennedy contact Xander have him call in the other Sunnydale Slayers each will each lead a team. We will send one of them and at least one other mini slayer to each location where we have cases along with a tech/watcher and witch. I want them to have back up as well as a way to communicate quickly. Have Xander pick the minis according to who is closest. I want locals when possible. Faith you had the right idea that a local will know the area best and that they can blend in more. We also need to brief the local police and get ready for the Feds to stick their nose in. Giles you might have to contact the head of the FBI and president as this could become a jurisdictional mess."
The officers of the Boston police snorted at that there was no way it was not going to become a mess in that regard.
Giles nodded and pulled out his phone and began to scroll down looking for the numbers he needed.
Buffy pushed her hair back and looked at Maura. "Thank Miss Willows and have her send her information through. Maybe we can find something to use."
Maura nodded and did just that not even realizing she was following the lead of the Queen of the slayers. Jane however did notice and frowned for a moment then pushed it aside as the suggestions were logical and workable. The implications could be dealt with later for now the case had to take top priority.
Travers and Post spotted their prey. The loan Witch was out jogging in the park. She was not connected to the coven they wanted to take down but she was not Council either which made her a risk. Each man knew they would need more power to deal with the slayers and their allies so taking out witches and warlocks to steal their magic made sense. Post aimed his weapon and fired. The Witch went down hard. He and Travers moved in and picked up the witch and carried her to the waiting car. She was tied up and gagged and tossed into the trunk with little care. It would not matter as soon she be stripped of her power and sacrificed to the demons and they would grow stronger. They had to grow stronger to serve as humanity's protectors.
In New York the CIS team met with those from SUV and who were clearly disturbed by the news of a new serial killer or killers.
"So let me get this straight. There is a serial killer or killers who are hunting little girls and have been working in New York and across the country for years and we are just now learning about it?" Detective Stabler asked.
"Elliot please try to remain calm." His boss Captain Cragen said attempting to keep one of his best officers from losing control. He had to agree with his subordinate but losing it was not going to help solve the cases that just got reopened.
"I understand your outrage detective but we had no idea of the connection until recently. It was brought to our attention by the Boston Medical examiner's office who had similar cases and sent out a feeler for more cases." Dr. Haung explained. "This is just as shocking to us as it is to you and it threatens to become not only a national case but perhaps even international. I have been on the telephone with my connections in Canada and there are at least five known murders there. One each in Montreal, Ottawa and Kingston, Halifax and Toronto and they go back over fifteen years we are beginning to think there are multiple unsubs doing these killings as several appear to be overlapping in the time scale."
"What does that mean? Is there a cult of some sort at work?" asked Detective Munch. As ever his mind went to various conspiracy theories and he made a mental note to check with some of his own connections as soon as he had a chance to get away and to a secure communications device.
Dr. Haung looked away there was so much he could not and would not say at this point. He thought back to his good friend who had been like his big brother Lee who dealt with things that went bump in the night because he was involved with the slayer. He had a bad feeling about this case. When Niki Wood's name came up as a possible victims he knew that for once Munch would be right there was a conspiracy and it went to the highest levels of an organization that was supposed to aid and protect the slayer and its line. He was angry and knew he was going to help bring these bastards down. However he could not and would not speculate at this point. Dr. Haung owed it to this team and to the victims to be rational and use every bit of his skills to help track the killers down. So instead he said. "We don't know much at this point. Only that there are multiple cases and that we are being asked to help with this case, it will likely be the biggest case ever. I am uncertain to the ramifications of these murders but we have experts coming in to assist us. I am hoping that the forensics from Detective Taylor's team will help with this investigation. So far it looks to be a series of murders over the past three decades which may mean it is a family doing this together."
"That is just sick." Fin Tutuola this detective saw things in black or white good or evil and the idea that a family could be doing this made him sick to his stomach. That kind of family bonding was the worst kind of abuse he could think of.
"We have to be careful with this case. As the doctor said it has far reaching consequences. I have learned that there may be an indirect connection to my family so I may have to recues myself." Alex Cabbot warned. I just don't know because it seems one of the victims may be a family member. Of course the governor also seems too think my families connections in Boston may be of use. It's really complicated and confusing right now."
Both the CIS and the SUV teams began to ask questions and Alex thought that this was not going to be simple or easy or end well for them. She got a sympathetic look from the doctor and she sighed raising her hand to quiet everyone.
