This Magic Moment

Chapter 1

A/N: This is my new Harry Potter Harmony fanfic. It will mostly take place in sixth year but the first few chapters will be the end of 5th year and the summer before 6th year.

The background is mostly canon with a few differences but a lot will be very different going forward. This is an idea of mine that has been floating around in my head for awhile and I hope you enjoy it.

As always I don't own anything from the wizarding world of Harry Potter, JK owns it.

Harry awoke from his nightmare shaking and sweaty. He realized he was still in the Great Hall where he'd been taking his History of Magic O.W.L. exam, and he had fallen asleep and fell to the floor.

He had to hurry, Sirius was being tortured by Voldemort. Harry quickly waved off the examiners concern, just saying he had exhausted himself from all the studying and fallen asleep.

Then he quickly left the Great Hall and rushed up to Gryffindor tower, trying to come up with a plan.

Before he made it halfway there Hermione caught up with him and asked, " Harry, what's wrong? What did you see?"

Harry looked around quickly to make sure no one was around to hear and said, " It's Sirius, Voldemort's got him at the ministry and he's torturing him. We have to save him.'

Hermione bit her lip in the cute way Harry always admired, clearly thinking hard.

She said, " are you sure that what you saw was real, or was Voldemort showing you what he wanted."

Harry thought a moment and said, " I'm not sure, but we have to do something, if it was real Sirius needs help."

Hermione thought a moment and said, " it might be a trap, if only there was some way to know for sure, mmhh… Of course! The mirror Harry!"

Harry asked, " what mirror?"

She answered, " the one you told me that Sirius gave you for Christmas."

Harry explained with a surprised expression on his face, " I'd completely forgotten about it, you're brilliant Hermione."

Harry hugged her tightly and she blushed crimson but smiled widely at the same time.

They quickly rushed up to Gryffindor tower and up to the 5th year boys dorm. It was thankfully empty since everyone else was either still sitting their exams or enjoying the nice day outside.

Harry quickly opened his trunk and rummaged around in it until he found the mirror wrapped up in a cloth.

He quickly pulled it out and said, " Sirius Black!"

It was blank for a moment and Harry started to panic, sure that what he'd seen of Sirius being tortured by Voldemort was real.

But then the mirror shimmered and Sirius's face appeared. Sirius's face lit up with a smile and he said, " Harry, it's wonderful to hear from you. I'd wondered if you'd ever get around to using the mirror."

Harry sagged with relief down onto the edge of his bed and Hermione sat next to him.

He looked at the mirror and said, " Sirius, you're okay, where are you?"

Sirius looked confused but said, " I'm absolutely fine Harry, but I'm still stuck in this damn house. Why, what's wrong?"

Harry told him all about the vision he'd seen about him being tortured by Voldemort.

Sirius said, " that sounds rather unpleasant, Voldemort is clearly trying to lure you into a trap. I'm glad you didn't just go rushing off from school, although that's probably what I would have done."

Harry mumbled out, " I was ready to do just that, but thankfully Hermione was the voice of reason and kept me from acting rashly. And she remembered the mirror when I'd completely forgotten."

Sirius smirked and said, " well that's good to hear, you're certainly lucky to have someone like her at your side to help keep you grounded, much as Lily did for James."

Both teens blushed but Hermione changed the topic as an idea came to her mind, " speaking of traps, since Voldemort doesn't know about your mirrors he'll most likely expect Harry to come running, so couldn't the Order use this to set a trap for Voldemort?"

Sirius said, " that's brilliant, you really are the brightest witch of your age. I'll contact the others immediately and we'll get it all figured out.

Voldemort will have to believe that you're going to the ministry, so we can use Polyjuice potion for one of the order members to impersonate you.

Luckily I believe there's still a comb in the room here you used over Christmas that might have a stray hair or two."

Harry asked, " so what should we do here?"

Sirius said, " stay there and stay safe I'll contact you through the mirror later and let you know how it goes. I'm not sure if I'll be able to go on this mission myself but I'm inching for some action."

Harry nodded and they said goodbye. Then he put the mirror on his nightstand and turned to Hermione.

He pulled her into a tight hug and said, " thank you Hermione, for being logical and keeping me from doing something stupid. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Hermione blushed and said, " you're welcome Harry. You know I'll always be there for you."

Harry pulled back a little and looked into her eyes. He very much wanted to kiss her. He'd wanted to kiss her for a long time now.

Back in their fourth year he had realized that she was his true best friend and that he was deeply in love with her. But he'd never said anything or acted on it because he was terrified of ruining their beautiful friendship.

Also he had believed that she fancied Victor Krum and he didn't want to ruin any chance of happiness she had. And since then he had been pretty sure she fancied Ron and he didn't want to come between his two closest friends.

Before he realized what he was doing Harry started to lean his head towards Hermione and she towards him. But before they could go any further the door to the room burst open and Ron came in.

Harry and Hermione jumped apart quickly as Ron said, " Harry, are you okay? I saw you collapse at the exam and then run off after you got up. I tried to follow but they wouldn't let me until I finished."

Then he noticed how close Harry and Hermione had been when he burst in, " what are you two doing?"

Harry stammered out, " nothing Ron, we were just talking. And I'm fine, I just had a bad "dream"."

Harry then told Ron about what he'd seen and how Hermione had thankfully suggested he use the mirror Sirius had given him to check before he did anything rash. And also about the conversation with Sirius.

Ron said, " so they're gonna set a trap for You-Know-Who? That's brilliant!"

Harry smiled and said, " yeah it is, it was actually Hermione's idea so of course it's brilliant."

After that the three of them decided to go outside to enjoy the nice day and wait to hear back from Sirius while also avoiding Umbridge.

They still hadn't heard anything when they went to the Great Hall for dinner. But as they were eating several post owls flew in delivering special evening editions of the Daily Prophet.

Hermione took hers from the delivery owl and spread it out on the table in front of her and Harry, Ron leaning over from across them. They couldn't believe the headline.

Battle at the Ministry, You-Know-Who returns!

Earlier today after most of the ministry staff had left early for the weekend some surprising events took place inside of the Ministry of Magic.

A small team of aurors along with some other allies apparently laid a trap for Who-Know-Who. Aurors Shacklebolt, and Tonks, along with aid from former auror Allistor Moody, Arthur Weasley of the misuse if muggle artifacts office, as well as Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore themselves, managed to lure the Dark Lord and some of his followers out of hiding.

Our source says that Who-Know-Who was desperately after something located within the Department of Mysteries and the team of allies used that information to plan a trap for the Dark Lord.

A fierce battle took place with Dumbledore himself dueling You-Know-Who. During the battle the minister and several aurors flooed into the ministry after receiving notice of the alarms set off by the ministry's wards being triggered due to all the combative spells being fired off.

Upon arriving the minister and his team witnessed the battle and saw with their own eyes that the Dark Lord had indeed returned.

After that the Dark Lord and his death eaters fled, but a few were captured including none other than Lucious Malfoy.

Then the minister formally apologized to Dumbledore and Harry Potter. They were telling the truth about the Dark Lord's return all along.

Dumbledore has been reinstated as Headmaster of Hogwarts as well as Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot. He is expected to return to Hogwarts this evening.

We are the Prophet also add our apology to Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter. And we will do all we can to keep the wizarding world up to date on the movements of the Dark Lord!

Hermione said, " well that's something. The truth is finally out about Voldemort. And you and Dumbledore have been vindicated. Mmm, I wonder who was impersonating you at the ministry?"

Harry said, " I'll bet it was Sirius, and it sounds as if everyone on our side came out of it unscathed."

Ron then added, " yeah and Dumbledore will be returning to the castle tonight. That's great, hopefully he'll get rid of Umbridge."

They glanced up at the staff table and saw a look of pure fury on Umbridge's face as she finished reading the paper.

Just at that moment the doors to the Great Hall burst open and Dumbledore strode inside, flanked on either side by Tonks and Kingsley, along with Amelia Bones following them.

Dumbledore said, " good evening everyone. I have returned, and I can see everyone is reading the paper so I don't need to elaborate on how it happened.

Now Professor Umbridge, I have Amelia Bones with me and she would like a word with you about the way you've been using illegal methods to punish and interrogate students."

Madam Bones stepped forward and pulled out a scroll that she read from, " I am placing Dolores Umbridge under arrest by the DMLE for the following charges.

Charge one, illegal use of blood quills to torture and punish underage students.

Charge two, illegal use of veritum serum to interrogate underage students.

And charge three, abuse of power given to you by the Ministry of Magic as the High Inquisitor."

Umbridge stood up and shouted, " this is absurd, this is my school now and I will do as I wish. You have no authority here. Cornelius will here if this and I will see you out of your job Director Bones. And I will see you all out into Azkaban."

She raised her wand and pointed it at Dumbledore and began saying, " avada-ka…"

But Dumbledore was faster and silently stunned, and then bound Umbridge.

Madam Bones then said, " I suppose we'll be adding attempted an unforgivable curse and attempted murder to the charges."

As Tonks and Kingsley went and grabbed Umbridge who was still unconscious the entire school erupted into cheers, except for a few Slytherins.

Harry went up to Dumbledore and said, "welcome back sir, we all missed you."

Dumbledore smiled and said, "thank you Harry, I'm very happy to be back myself. And I have more good news for you."

Amelia Bones handed Dumbledore a scroll that he passed to Harry. Harry read it and smiled brightly.

He said, "Sirius is going to get an actual trial, and be cleared? Does that mean that once he's free I can stay with him?"

Dumbledore smiled and said, "well yes it does Harry, he had hoped you would want that."

Harry smiled and said, "of course I do, I can't wait."

After that everyone watched as Madam Bones, Kingsley, and Tonks levitated Umbridge out of the Great Hall and out of the school.

Then Dumbledore took his place at the podium and said, " well I believe this calls for a celebration and a special feast tomorrow. The staff and I will also work on returning everything to normal. For now simply finish your meal and then off to bed."

With that the many in the Great Hall began whispered conversations and Harry, Hermione, and Ron simply finished eating and then rushed up stairs to Harry and Ron's dorm.

Once there Harry quickly pulled out the mirror and called Sirius.

Sirius answered right away and was smiling broadly. Harry also noticed that Sirius's hair was a black color and was shorter but was slowly returning to it's normal longer style and brunette color.

He also had a fading scar on his forehead that matched Harry's own.

Harry smirked and said, " well, I think it's obvious who impersonated me at the Ministry. I might have known it'd be you."

Sirius grinned and said, " yes well, I needed a way to get in on the action without revealing my identity, seeing I'm still a wanted man, for now at least.

Sorry I didn't call you sooner, but I was waiting for the last dose of Polyjuice to wear off. So has Dumbledore already returned along with Amelia, Kingsley, and Tonks?"

Harry replied, " yeah he has, they arrived during dinner and Dumbledore, Amelia, Kingsley and Tonks quickly subdued Umbridge. If course that was after she attempted to cast a killing curse on Dumbledore."

Sirius gasped, " what, the toad actually tried to kill Dumbledore?"

All three teens nodded an affirmative and Harry said, " yeah she did, but of course Dumbledore was faster. He easily stunned and bound her, and then Amelia, Kingsley and Tonks took her away. We just got back from the Great Hall after everything happened and we also saw the evening edition of the Prophet.

It told all about what happened and the Ministry and that Voldemort is actually back and that Dumbledore and I were telling the truth all along."

Sirius barked out in laughter and said, " oh, I'd have loved to have seen the fat toad out in her place. And it's great that the truth is finally out there and hopefully people will actually listen.

There was one other thing that came from all this, some very good news."

Harry said, " yeah Dumbledore already told us, you're finally going to be cleared and be free. And before you ask I will be very happy to live with you once you're a free man."

Sirius smiled and said, " wonderful Harry, as for where we'll live, we'll that's a surprise I think you'll truly like.

Well it's getting pretty late and you three need your rest. I imagine things will be much better at Hogwarts for the remainder of the term now that the toad is gone. I'll talk to you soon."

After Sirius "hung-up" the three of them talked for a few minutes about all the events of the day. Then Hermione left to go to the girls dorm and to bed.

Harry and Ron got changed into their pajamas and got into their beds. As Harry lay in his bed thinking back on the day one memory of the day was on his mind more than any other.

He knew that he had almost kissed Hermione, they were so close to it. But then Ron had come in before it happened. Harry had wanted to kiss Hermione for a long time.

He wanted to share his first kiss with her. He had almost had his first kiss with Cho just before Christmas, but he had gently turned her down. For one thing he liked her but he had realized that he didn't really fancy her after all.

He knew that the only one he truly wanted was Hermione. She was the one person that had always been by his side through everything since their first year.

But he didn't know what to do about it. He didn't even know if she even felt anything for him, and he didn't want to ruin their friendship.

He'd figure it all out later, at least he hoped he would. As he finally drifted off to sleep his last thoughts were of Hermione.

A/N: Well that was the first chapter. I'm already working on the second one and I hope to have it posted within the next few days.

I'm also working on the third chapter for my fem Harry fic. I'm busy with work but getting as much writing done as I can in my free time.
