Chapter 1

Christian looked in the cabinet for anything he could find to eat. He opened a jar of peanut butter. He saw maybe a spoonful left. He opened the refrigerator. "Great no jelly, no milk, and no bread."

Christian took a spoon and scraped out the spoonful and jammed it in his mouth. It was like eating glue. At least it was something in his stomach. He couldn't afford lunch at school and dinner would come after his job tonight.

He threw his book bag on his shoulder and looked at his mother through the crack of her door. Her arm was hanging off of the bed. Her naked body was covered with a sheet. He didn't see the man that he heard last night, only money on the dresser. He wondered why she even had him. She didn't take care of him, she couldn't take care of herself. He walked down the steps of the shitty apartment and walked to school. He only stuck with school to have a way out.

He sat in his literature class, really not interested in anything at all. He smiled hearing Anastasia Steele explain her view on Pride and Prejudice. He thought she was cute, but oddly she was also part of a click which he wasn't included in. She mirrored his mother with looks, but not in action. She was just a regular smart girl and didn't seem like she belonged with the others. She lived with her stepfather and her mother was long gone.

Her best friend was Kate Kavanagh. She was rich. Her father owned an entire media company. She was a blonde that every guy drooled over, but of course Elliot Grey had her. "What the fuck are you looking at Ross? Keep your eyes on that book."

Ana looked at Christian. She bumped Kate which caused Kate to slap Elliot's arm. She told him to knock it off and he did. The only person Elliot listened to was Kate. She had him by the balls.

They heard the bell. "Christian Ross. See me, now!"

Christian watched everyone leave and Ana smiled at him. "Yes, Mrs. Lincoln?" Christian swallowed hard.

Elena Lincoln was no teacher to fool with and everyone had to take her class to graduate. "You have impressive scores and not just in my class." She looked over her glasses and took them off. She was a middle aged woman, but very pretty. Christian knew who her husband was, so working as an English teacher was confusing. Her husband owned Lincoln Timber. They were rich.

Christian met him over the summer when he was working in one of his lumber yards chopping and sweating when he helped one of the bosses with a money problem. Mr. Lincoln was pretty cool.

Mrs. Lincoln, reviewed his work. "You're enrolled in the college courses as well. Mind blowing, especially for a kid like you."

Christian gritted his teeth. He wondered what her point was. He knew Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln were best friends with Elliot's father and mother. He was an all American boy with a lawyer for a daddy and doctor for a mommy. Some kids were just so lucky. "Thank you Mrs. Lincoln. I'm just trying to make a way for myself."

She nodded. "How would you like a real tutoring job?" Christian stood up straight. He was busted. He had been scamming rich kids by doing their math homework. He just needed the money. "Relax Christian, I'm not going to get you in trouble. I get it and I see you and the life you have. I know math and computers are more your thing, but you're very gifted Christian. It would give you more income." Christian shifted in place. "Look, if you say no, I still won't tell. It's for a friend."

Christian needed the money so he agreed. "Mrs. Lincoln, who needs tutoring?"

She smiled nervously, "Elliot Grey." Christian shook his head. He asked why, because he was smart enough to know that so many other people could help him. She looked at him and lied, but she had her reasons. "His friends can't help, they will only be a hindrance. I will speak to Elliot's mother about his behavior." Christian agreed and left with an address for tomorrow afternoon.

He met the kids in the library to get some money. He walked up to Jack Hyde and Jose Rodriguez. They each had a girl with them, Mia Grey and Gia Matteo. "You're already late, give us the damn work!" Christian handed it to Jack. Jack threw 20 bucks on the ground.

Christian picked it up. "Hey, you owe me 50." Jack tapped Jose and they ran. Gia smirked and followed, "Let's go Mia. Forget the dork." Mia reached in her pocket and handed him a roll of cash. She claimed it was all she had.

Christian didn't smile. "Fuck you and asshole boyfriend." He threw her money down. "You'll be pregnant in a year." He needed the money, but not like that. It was already bad enough he was settling for tutoring a Grey. Mia was Elliot's twin sister. He wouldn't take it for nothing.

Christian went to the store. He did the math in his head. He grabbed the cheapest bread, milk, hotdogs, peanut butter, and jelly he could find. He went home and his mother's door was closed. He put the food away. He moved faster hearing his mother yell and hearing her headboard hitting the wall. "Fuck! Don't be so rough!" Christian chugged a glass of milk and went to his room.

He couldn't believe it. His mother was still having sex for money to get drugs. He did his homework. Thank goodness the school gave students laptops. He checked on his college scholarships. He didn't need a top notch school, just a degree. "Damn Christian, you need real money to make your plan work. Fuck!" He needed a break.

He heard the door shut and saw his mother at the door. "How did you get food?" Christian didn't answer his mother. She walked over to him and rubbed his copper brown hair. "You need a haircut. I was going to get you something to eat."

She spun his seat around. She wasn't high, he saw it in her eyes. He wished it could be like this all the time. "Christian, I'm sorry I can't be what you need. You are so much better than me. You remind me of my other family." She kissed his cheek and gave him 60 bucks.

Christian squinted, they didn't have any family. His father was just a pimp from what he was told. "Get a pizza. I'm going out. Night baby. Christian, I love you." She smiled at him. After he mumbled he loved her too. Christian watched her leave. He never knew when she left, if she would come back. He started typing his name on some more scholarships, Christian T. Ross.
