"… I don't want to be here." The small voice said, clinging tightly to the other small child beside him.
"I don't wanna be here too, but we gotta keep moving!" The other small child said, there was something in his voice that was also afraid, so afraid of the dark woods, the black night sky, the sparks of red they swore they saw at the corners of their eyes, and most of all they were afraid that they were left all alone.
Yet the second boy had to move on. Something was letting the boy continue on and move despite being all alone with the first child.
He was scared, he was tired, but most of all he was quite scared. He was scared… of dying… of being alone…
"I wish. I wish we weren't here anymore." The second child complained weakly.
'I… What have I done?' Blake thought to herself as she saw the light getting closer to her. 'Running away… that 's all I ever did, wasn't it? Dad, Adam, Ruby, Yang, Weiss, and now Sun? This can't be how it ends! I can't do anything, it's moving faster than my body can react! I fell right for it! Resh… please at least use that big head of yours to drag Sun out of this…'
"I'm sorry."
Blake resigned at that, and only hoped that she could be somehow forgiven and that the people that followed her wouldn't die because of her selfish mistakes.
"Mama!"
Wait… what? Was that Resh? Why did he just scream out…
"Save your stupid *cough* apologizes for all of us." A familiar voice coughed violently before an explosion that sounded to be some distance away went off.
What? What? What? Blake didn't understand. What—why was Resh saying that and why did he sound so close all of a sudden?
"Aww my throat…" Another familiar voice said as it seemed to come nearby her.
Confused greatly, Blake re opened her deep colored eyes to see that there was still in the dock, but instead of where she was running originally, she was now a large distance away from Roman, the White Fang, and his mysterious bodyguard. All of them had a stupefied look at where the three intruders were before looking in their direction a good and safe distance away from all of them.
"The hell!?" Roman cried out after his shot missed completely.
Blake saw Sun on her right get up, she quickly glanced at the stranger only to see him somehow slammed into the one of the other crates.
"Sun!?"
The other blonde Faunus got up with her help. "Blake, did you see the guy who tackled me?"
Blake looked to her left to see Resh, panting hard and looking out of breath. Not only that, he was coughing quite a bit.
"Resh, what happened?!" Blake asked.
"Good news and bad news." Resh managed to get back up slowly despite coughing a few times. "I finally activated my Semblance, and it is overpowered as an imbalanced MOBA."
"I'm sorry what?" Blake asked at the odd terms.
"Online game." Sun quickly corrected.
Resh continued after that interjection. "Bad news: my semblance has a really stupid side affect that makes my heart hurt like a lot."
"Wait, you saved us both?" Blake asked the purple boy.
Resh looked back at her before looking forward and having his red eyes widen in surprise. "Move!" he screamed as the three of them quickly avoided a blast from Roman.
"Why won't you kids just stay dead!?" Roman roared.
"Haven't you heard? Staying alive is all the rage with kids nowadays; it's even a catchy song! Get with the times you wrinkly, old man!" It was good to see Resh's sarcasm survives like some kind of immortal cockroach.
The cloaked figure ran towards the fallen crate Roman shot down. Everyone, including the thief, wondered what the wild card would do. They weren't expecting the figure, who was technically the size of the other kids, to lift up the entire, huge, metal crate with nothing but his bare hands over his head.
"Whoa wait!?" Sun pointed at the impossible feat. "We already saw his Semblance! I know it's not super strength!"
No one seemed to comment on that since the figure unceremoniously threw the crate at them much like a rugby player would throw the ball.
The three hunters in training flinched before making their escape from the attack.
However, while Blake and Sun dodged the crate sideways, Resh was forced to slide under it and move closer towards the bad guys… and right into the mouth of Roman's weapon.
"Resh!" Blake and Sun yelled out.
Resh nervously glanced at the eager smile plastered on Roman's face while he was holding his weapon towards him. "So uhh, about that wrinkly old man comment…"
Roman's smile only widened as readied his trigger finger to pull.
At that moment, another fire hit the ground between the two, forcing Roman to step back. Roman frowned in an annoyed manner before looking towards to see an annoying familiar red caped girl.
"Ahh great, it's you Red. Isn't it past your bed time?" Roman insulted before he was decked in the face by Resh, who capitalized on the distraction.
"Nice one Resh!" Ruby called out from the roof top.
Her only response; however, was Resh pointing accusingly at her.
"Dang it Ruby! I'm right here! Watch where you're aiming that thing! I almost got hit!"
"Hey! I never miss!" Ruby cried out as Jaune came walking up to her.
"Wait a sec!? Resh, what are you even doing here!? Aren't you supposed to be in work?!" Jaune pointed to the boy.
"This is my work apparently! Keeping an eye on all of you—" The boy from the future turned his head and avoided being crushed by another steel crate that the cloaked figure had thrown at him.
Ruby and Jaune were surprised to see Resh get attacked by that cloaked figure, but before they could jump in, Penny had spoken up.
"Ruby, are these people your friends?" The strange asked as she walked up to Ruby.
Ruby looked back to the girl. "Penny, stay back."
"Ruby, look out!" Jaune frantically screamed and readied his shield in front of Ruby as a blast from Roman's cane forced the two backward and fall on each other somewhat injured.
Penny saw her new friends get injured and decided to step in as White Fang members came in rushing towards their direction.
"Wait Penny!' Ruby cried out to her while she was still sprawled under Jaune.
"Not to worry Ruby," Penny told her before stepping on the edge of the roof. "I'm combat ready!"
The 'backpack' of Penny opened up, revealing a blade that opened up to reveal thinner, but many blades seemingly levitating beside her.
She jumped off as the now growing reinforcements of the White Fang charged at her. However, she easily dispatched all bumbling grunts left and right with excellent display of her fighting prowess.
That was until something was thrown at her.
Penny already sensed it heading towards her and quickly made her blades fly—until she forcefully stopped them from actually hitting an ally, and instead used her powers to catch the blonde Faunus thrown to her.
"Oww… how does he keep doing that?" Sun moaned before Penny gently put him down.
Resh came back regrouping with him, almost seemingly appearing out of nowhere and looking very out of breath for some reason.
"I… told you to duck a second time. Don't you remember the first time I shouted that?"
The orange haired girl looked over to where Sun had been thrown and noticed the cloaked figure walking towards them. She just had this confirmation that this one was the biggest threat in the entire vicinity.
Out of the smoke, the cloaked figure seemingly stalked his way towards the trio. Penny shot out first, launching all her blades towards the figure. The figure simply stood there as the blades all pierced him like barbeque sticks.
However, the three fighters almost immediately noticed something off: the blades were dry even after piercing through the cloaked figure's body.
Then he looked up before grabbing all swords and pulling on them, making Penny struggle at the amount of strength behind them.
Sun saw the figure immobilized and tried again to hit him with his weapon. Resh tried to follow, but he felt his instincts scream for him to stop again. Why did it do that? And why was it so strong to actually cause him to be frozen because of it? It was almost as if… his body knew who this guy was…
Then something strange happened, a dark, ominous red aura appeared from the cloaked figure. Then in a flash of black, dark aura clones shot out from the being's shadow and rushed right for Sun.
The monkey Faunus was caught completely off guard by that power as he screamed out loud. "Wait a sec that's my Semblance!" However, he hesitated as one of the clones rushed him and punched him in the stomach hard, making his lungs contract inwardly.
More clones followed in pursuit of the first attacker, jumping over their first attacker and looking ready to attack the injured blonde boy.
Three glass shattering sounds were heard.
Sun looked back up, and saw Resh smashing all Aura clones in a succession of three kicks empowered by his own aura before catching Sun and getting him out of there.
"Oh my stomach… I thought I had my aura up…" Sun complained as Resh helped him back up. "But that cloning power he just used. That was my semblance!"
Resh clicked his tongue before going under some of Penny's strings and attacking some White Fang members rushing towards Penny. "He's an absorber. Now I'm sure of it. His Semblance didn't make much sense before with all those different powers because he has more than one semblance. He must have absorbed your semblance when he tackled you down and lightning was appearing on his arms." Resh theorized as he stared down the currently still figure.
"Well that's just broken." Sun stated as he readied his weapon.
"Please stand back!" Penny shouted causing the two boys to look at her and jump out of the way. The small girl had apparently charged her blades and suddenly electricity shot out from the invisible strings and conducted into the blades the figure was holding. The being was shocked hard form the voltage and let go, allowing Penny to whip her blades outward and slam the figure towards more stacked up crates.
However, the cloaked figure flipped mid air, crashing into the side of one create with his legs first, and causing a huge indentation to cave into the crate and horribly bend itself. He stood up, while he was standing on the wall and tilted his mask to look back at the three.
"I am detect—sensing a massive spike in our enemy's aura." Penny said as her own blades started spinning and glowing in retaliation.
"This wouldn't have anything to do with the ominous red-black glowing and electricity cackling around him would it?" Sun asked as he pointed towards the gravity defying figure.
The boy from Mistrial was distracted as a bright green light was gathering around Penny's blades. It was growing larger and had this certain hum that signified that it was going to all be unleashed towards the masked being.
Resh saw this and said, "Sun, I this is out of our weight class, we might wanna step back for good this time."
"Way ahead of you." With that, the two boys retreated back.
Ruby and Jaune caught up with Blake before noticing the two glowing, bright lights that were becoming even brighter.
Roman, seeing this, motioned to his subordinates and they all started retreating to incoming Dust Planes.
No sooner as they did, the figure unleashed a powerful beam of red energy right towards Penny who countered by unleashing another concentrated beam of energy.
Sun and Resh caught u p with the other three as the force of the blast kept racing towards them.
"Quick behind that crate!" Jaune pointed to a nearby thrown metal crate as all five students ducked behind it to avoided being blown away by the force of the blast.
"Oh my gosh! Isn't this so cool!? They're firing lasers at each other!" Ruby managed to gush with hype as all five of them squeezed behind the crate.
"Ruby!" Blake managed to shout over the clashing beams. "How did you find us?!"
"The explosions were really hard to miss!" Jaune managed to answer her even though he was sitting right next to her. "Also, is it me or are their beams becoming louder!?"
As soon as he said that, the light behind them intensified, and the wind grew even stronger behind them.
Sun, being the closest to the edge, peeked out from the side, and saw the beams that were colliding were gaining merging and making an orb.
"Guys! It's going to blow!"
"What!?" Jaune yelled.
"We need to get out of here!" Ruby screamed.
Blake looked at the girl. "Ruby, go you're the only one fast enough to make it!"
The small girl had defiance in her silver eyes. "I'm not leaving anyone—wait how'd, we all get here?"
By one sudden second, everyone found themselves back in the office where Blake and the other two broke in.
"I… really… that's… going to take some getting used to…" Resh gasped for breath heavily as he sat down on one of the seats.
Jaune looked very surprised. "Resh, did you just—"
Then glass shattered as a deafening boom occurred. Everyone shielded themselves, but somehow Resh's semblance had placed them all far away from any glass as possible, so the worst they got was some dust blowing up to their face.
"Oh no! Penny!" Ruby cried out as she saw an exit and Ran out to see if her friend was alright.
"Ruby, wait!" Blake called out as she ran after her, closely followed by Sun and Jaune.
However, the Arc child stopped before leaving the entrance and looked over to Resh. "Resh?"
"Go… I'll just… rest a bit… here." He gasped as he sunk into the comfy boss chair.
"Right, remind me to owe you one for getting us all out of here."
"You owe me more than a thousand, you Grimm spawn!" Resh managed to shout as Jaune raced back towards the others.
Ruby looked around as she came back to the dust filled area where the figure and Penny were mysteriously clashing laser beams. Still, despite the cloudy air, Ruby could make out Penny's bright colors out in the clouds. She still looked to be OK.
"Penny! Ruby shouted as she ran towards her."
The eccentric girl turned over to her and returned a smile. "Friend Ruby, I am glad to see you unharmed!" She exclaimed as Ruby came in to hug her, but then something in the distance caught her attention. "Ruby, wait, he's still there."
"Wait what?" Ruby cried out as the other three came running behind her.
As the smoke died down, the figure was seen standing on the very tip top of one of the highest cranes in the area. The light show that the two of them did had not only made the place look decimated, but seemed powerful enough to part the skies above to reveal the shattered moon righ behind him from where everyone was standing.
"Hey look!" Sun pointed out as White Fang Dust planes were already making their way far away from this battle as possible, more than likely Roman was among those planes.
"Did they just leave their comrade behind?!" Jaune asked in horrid shock.
"No." Penny stated making everyone look at her. "His actions, he was holding us off so they could all escape…"
The figure slowly couched form where he was standing on top of before in a burst of black and red-ish aura, giant red bones exploded from the back of his cloak.
"I recall the purple one mentioning he was an absorber. He must be using a shape shifting semblance." Penny stated.
The giant red bones protruded outward until it opened up to reveal boney wings of some kind. The wind blew off the hood of the figure, revealing a marble mask that was absorbed into his skin before he jumped off and started flying quickly towards the direction of where the dust planes left.
"Did… did anyone see that on his face?" Sun asked with some disgust. "Because that… was nasty."
"At least it's over, right?" Jaune asked making everyone look at him now. "What?" He asked.
Blake sighed. "You know Jaune, I'm starting to see why Resh thinks your nothing but bad luck."
One of the first things everyone did after being found by the police was to wait around for a bit. However, there were one or more things that bothered them in that fight.
"Hey, Resh?" Ruby asked the purple boy sitting on a 'borrowed' comfy spinny chair as he sat out in the cold night with the rest of them, who were sitting on a bunch of nearby wooden small crates. "How did you get us all out of the explosion range?"
"Oh that was my semblance." The purple clad boy answered back casually.
"You finally used your semblance?!" Jaune asked in surprise and shock. "Dude what is it?!"
"Yeah, and how did you save us?" Sun chimed in. "Was it mass teleportation? Because that's the only thing I can think off at the top of my head."
Resh thought about it for a second. He got out his scroll and typed something before looking to Jaune and holding a piece of his shoulder. "Let me show you what my Semblance is."
Resh's closed his eyes before seemingly concentrating, then he stopped and let go of Jaune by taking a step back with an amused smile on his face, as if he was glad that something worked the way he hopped it would.
"Uhh, Resh?" Jaune asked. "Aren't you going to use your semblance?"
Resh stayed silent this time. His smile only growing was the only thing Jaune saw.
"Oh come on, Resh, don't be such a Grimm, I'm sure we all want to know what your semblance is, right guys…?" Jaune looked behind him to his friends, but was surprised to see them all… vacant…
"Uh guys?" Jaune went closer to Ruby first. He wondered why the girl wasn't even blinking or showing the smallest hints of movements considering she was something like the most hyperactive girl here since Nora was currently not present. She looked to be in place, as if frozen without ice.
It was then Jaune noticed it was unusually quiet. He couldn't hear the sirens anymore.
"Uh Blake?" Jaune turned to the black themed girl only to see her just as frozen. Then he called out to Sun who seemed to be in the middle of attempting to pick his nose.
Jaune looked back to his son from the future. "What's going on?" He then coughed.
Resh showed Jaune his scroll to him. On the screen, Resh had put on a timer that looked to be paused… except the button on the screen indicated that it was not paused, but still actively counting seconds. However, the numbers all froze, even around the millisecond area.
Jaune quickly fished out his scroll and saw that the time on his scroll was frozen as well.
"No way…" Jaune said before coughing once. "You've got the power to stop time!?"
Resh nodded once as if the ability to stop one of the major staples of the universe to a single person's whim was something so mundane.
"Cool!" Jaune shouted again before coughing another time. "Aww man! Think of all the cool things… wait. … You can freeze time? You? The guy who makes my life a living hell at school?"
Resh's eyes widened before a smile of realization hit him. As if to say, 'Oh that didn't occur to me until now!'
"Oh no," Jaune coughed. "Gosh. Oww." He coughed again. He was now coughing a lot more frequently. "Why—Why am I coughing?"
Jared showed him his scroll again. This time there was a text on it.
"I froze time sir. That means I even froze Oxygen. We can't breathe here and I'm holding my breath."
Jaune looked at the smile on Resh's face. That was why he wasn't saying anything! The jerk was trying to choke him!
"You freaking punk! You let me do that on purpose, you Grimm Spawn!" Jaune shouted and coughed.
"Whoa, Jaune!" Ruby called out in surprise, which in turn surprised Jaune. "I'm sure if you asked nicely Resh would show us. There's no need to get grumpy."
"Wait, what!? But you were… He…!" Jaune was at a loss of words until he realized that in the middle of his insults, Resh let time continue on making it look like Jaune was randomly being a mean guy.
Great, now his best friend now had the means to torture him on a new level. The hell Monty, what did he do to deserve this?
"No way! That's your semblance?!" Ruby cooed in awe after Resh explained what his semblance actually was.
"Apparently so, so far, I'm a time freezer. But seriously, if I use it for too long, my heart starts to hurt from lack of oxygen, and not to mention, I would think if I use my aura in any way during my semblance it would either break or hasten the ability, so I might have to start testing things out." Resh pondered out loud.
Jaune pointed to him with a leer. "You better not be trying to make me your guinea pig for your dust forsaken experiments!"
Resh fake gasped. "Jaune, I'm hurt! What makes you think I would abuse one of the most powerful semblances in existence just to torture you!?"
For some reason, Ruby was seen being carried bridal style by Jaune with her arms around his neck. Everyone looked surprised and the two in question became as red as a Ruby's name sake.
"Aaah!" they both yelled as Ruby suddenly slapped Jaune and then she found herself sitting back down from where she was awhile ago.
Resh broke out into furious laughter. "OK, OK t-that was the only one! I promise on Jaune's life! Sorry, sorry I couldn't resist!"
Blake glared ferociously at Resh while Ruby was too flustered and looked over to Jaune in worry, who was knocked over to the ground.
Sun had this slight hope he might use that power to hook a brother up.
"Having fun Kolc?" a very, very restrained voice asked from behind him as Resh turned around to see Yang, the one who had just spoken and looked somewhat, maybe, just a little ticked. While Weiss, and the rest of Team NPR were behind her, or rather a safe distance away from the bombshell.
For the first few seconds, there was no sign of movement in the black haired boy's face.
"Yes." He said before dodging a punch of where his face would be.
"Then you won't mind if I have some fun, don't you!?" The vein on her forehead was unmissable.
"Eh fine I think I deserve it—" Resh couldn't finish as he was punched out cold by Yang and dropped to the floor.
"Nice punch." Jaune managed to call out as he got back up.
What followed afterward was a rather warm and touching reunion of team RWBY coming together.
As they all came together—well as much as Weiss would allow Sun—Ruby noticed something off. "Hey where's Penny?"
"Oh, she disappeared into the background when the Police arrived." Resh spoke up as he got back up from the floor and felt his nose really hurt.
"What? Why didn't you say anything?!" Ruby asked.
"Well she probably had her reasons for doing so. After all, she stood her ground against an Assimilator Semblance user with more than a few high class semblances under his belt. After all, it's obvious there's more to her than meets the eye." Resh spoke out while recalling about the stories and versions of how he meet Penny in his future.
Blake seemed to be a little down at the recall of such a beast like monster under the White Fang's thumb.
"By the way, while we are on this subject…" Resh looked to two people in particular. "Blake, Sun, you have sharper senses than most of us. Did that masked figure say anything?"
"What?" Blake asked as everyone else looked confused. "What do you mean?"
"While I was fighting him… I thought I heard something, but he was whispering something. I was sort of hoping either of you heard him."
"I didn't hear anything from him." Blake spoke out, but then they all noticed Sun was unusually silent on this topic.
The monkey Faunus noticed all eyes were on him as he rubbed the back of his head. "Well, I think I did hear something while he was absorbing my semblance, but it was really weird."
"Why was it weird?" Resh asked.
"Because he kept repeating it over and over even though it sounded more like a chant. It was kind of creepy looking back. Man, thanks for saving me from that." Sun told Resh gratefully.
"So what was the word?" Jaune pointed out that Sun hadn't actually said the word.
Sun blinked and his eyes widened. "Ah right, my bad. He kept muttering the name Jared."
"Ja...red…?" Resh repeated out loud slowly.
Weiss looked confused at the fifth member of Team JNPR. "Wait, do you know him?"
Resh looked around and calmed himself down. "Well I was just surprised. I do have a friend named Jared back home, but he's a normal guy. Besides, it's a fairly normal and common name, so I was just caught off guard by it."
Blake sensed something off with the way Resh had just dismissed that. And now that it was brought up, Resh himself did say something very strange before she thought she would die.
"Man it's cold." Sun said as he actually shivered a bit. "Who knew sea air would be so cold in the absolute dead of night?"
Weiss folded her arms. "It is getting late. We should look into this more tomorrow morning."
"But it is tomorrow morning." Ruby corrected as she looked at her scroll.
"The point is everyone is tired, either by fighting here or looking for Blake the entire day. So it's time we all finally went home, after all our first semester finals are coming up." Weiss spoke out logistically.
"Oh Monty that's still a thing." Jaune whined in horror.
It was then Nora laughed at her leader's reaction, making Resh laugh as well along with some other people since his reaction was actually priceless to hear they still had school to deal with.
Meanwhile, Ozpin was watching this all on a video feed. He did not like the looks of the enemy having that much fire power from just one member.
The video was cut short as he received a message from Qrow.
"The Queen has pawns."
Ozpin seemed to absorb that message before he noticed Qrow sent another message.
"The Blue Myth? Lead? Or wild goose chase?"
His brow was raised at that one. "What does an old fairy tale have to do with this?" He spoke silently to himself before he realized something.
"… Time…" The master of Beacon opened up his scroll again to focus more on the fifth member of Team JNPR.
"We have a problem." Hemera addressed her team as they came together.
"What is it?"
"Thalassa has just informed me that Resh Kolc has manifested his semblance: and it's the ability to freeze time."
Ephesto looked surprised. "You're kidding. That's a high class Semblance! Isn't Ozpin supposed to…"
"We are aware of the fact there is a new Temporal Based Semblance user," Hemera told them. "And what it means, which only means we are moving sooner."
Roman supposed it could have been better. They hadn't lost a single person because of the weirdo using some of his own miscellaneous collective of Semblances to get the others back into the ships while he was fighting those kids.
This was also the first time he had seen him in action and he had to admit he was both impressed and scared.
Impressed that someone with Semblance like that has already absorbed at least a good half a dozen of very powerful semblances, but he had to admit if his way of absorbing other's semblances was anything like he did with the monkey kid, it would imply that all those previous owners…
And the scariest part? He was a complete, mindless, and loyal dog to a certain someone.
He sighed.
"How very disappointing Roman."
Roman screamed. Speak of the devil. He then laughed it off nervously as he faced the three new people behind the cloaked figure.
"Haha. Wasn't expecting you guys so soon." He tried to play off.
"We're expecting more from you." The woman who spoke this had an air of disappointment in her tone. And with the way she moved her hand, it almost seemed as if this was a woman you wouldn't want to disappoint. "Even after we gave you what little help we could spare."
Her gaze, along with the other two beside her, looked over the cloaked figure who simply remained quiet and unmoving. To think even as someone this powerful did nothing to question her.
"Hey, you were the ones who suggested working with those stupid mutts in the first place."
The woman raised her hand and ignited it, scaring away some of the darkness and revealing the glow of the flames reflecting on her eyes. "And you will continue to do so. We have big plans for you Roman. All we ask… is for a little cooperation."
{Author Notes}
Sorry for the rather lack luster chapter. Didn't really have much planned for this event. But afterward is where things get very interesting.
Unfortunately this also means that it's going to be a bit before I reach volume two, but on the plus side, some original content is coming soon, so people don't exactly know what's coming except I!
Anywho, I'm in vacation right now, so I've decided to start my New Years resolution a little early, which means I'm going to be able to write more for the next few weeks in exchange for when school starting back, I'll be focusing more on my studies.
But there is something important I want to ask you guys.
Should I write over this week? I think my school gets off earlier, so I don't know if I might be posting more this week, I'll be distracting some fans from their studies and I don't want that. I needed be, I'll write, but save up more chapters for later in the month so there's less time between updates.
What do you guys think?
And since it's my pre-New years resolution—I really do want to change this year—I'm bringing back the review response!
So uh to keep things easier on me, I'll just respond to the ones I received last time I posted the previous chapter.
