Thank you to theasiannextdoor for following. Hope you're enjoying it so far!
Around us was bedlam.
Black and golden sand was flying everywhere as the two sets of Dream Descendants fought. Above them Toothiana was flying around Pitch Black, attempting to distract him from something.
Billy, Bunnymund and Phil had jumped out of the hole and Stephen leapt into the air using his power.
I made an ice bridge and skated upwards into the air to get a good look at what was going on. It seemed that Toothiana was distracting Pitch from the contaminated Descendants of Sandman as several others defended them from the ground.
No one seemed to notice us just yet, until I heard various shouts from below and looking down I saw some of the Descendants of Pitch pointing up at me. Those that had noticed were swept up in the fight, but enough had raised the alarm for our presence to no longer be a surprise.
I went downwards in a slope, which evened out over the top of the fighters, several noticed me and the Descendants of Sandman stopped concentrating on fighting and started pushing forward. I went straight to the hole to guide them towards it and to defend it from Descendants of Pitch.
I stamped my foot and sent a ring of ice around the hole, so I could tell when someone got close.
I waved my hands as Descendants of Sandman rushed forward towards me.
"Let's go, come on!"
I felt someone approaching from behind by my ice and turned to face them. Seeing black sand I sent them flying with forward push of my hands, sending an ice blast at them.
As more Descendants of Pitch came forward with the Descendants of Sandman I had to focus my blasts to make sure they didn't get through and the Descendants of Sandman didn't get hit.
When I saw that we'd started to get a few carrying contaminated Sandman Descendants I knew that this was going to be over soon, and I felt a sense of relief, I was getting tired.
I saw Stephen flying towards me and he dived into the hole, not far behind was Billy and Phil. Phil dived into the hole while Billy stood by me to keep the Descendants of Pitch back with punches, kicks and strangely, a boomerang.
They were coming in harder now, and I had to really fight to keep them back. No more Descendants of Sandman were coming through, so I scanned the area for the two Guardians.
"Toothiana! Bunnymund! Come on!" I called above the din of yelling and sand.
I could see a blur of green on the other end of the cavern, but I couldn't tell what she was doing.
My attention was diverted as the Descendants of Pitch kept on coming.
Finally the blur came over our way.
"Jackie! It's good to see you!" Toothiana had apparently forgotten her jealousy for moment.
"We can exchange greetings later, we need to go. Where's Bunnymund?"
"Right here!" Came a voice from in front of me. A boomerang shot through the air, sending Descendants of Pitch to the ground and he bounded through the sudden gap, catching the boomerang as it came back.
"Let's go!"I yelled and we dived into the hole with Bunnymund filling it in before the Descendants of Pitch could force their way down. We sat there panting in the silence for a second, getting our breath back.
"I'm going to head to North's position, I'll see ya later." Said Bunnymund, before forming a side tunnel and disappearing down it.
I turned to the others and said.
"Let's head back."
We got back in one piece and were greeted with cheers, once I hit the ground I saw three familiar people running towards me.
I opened my mouth to greet them when Nigel beat me to it, pulling me into a hug and lifting me off the ground.
"Haha! It's so good to see you! Billy's been telling us what's happened. You have no idea how proud we are of you."
He put me down so I could hug Sally.
"Although, I have been hearing something worrying. Something about you and Penelope..."
I pulled out of Sally's hug and sighed.
"Penelope saved my life and got me to the Guardians, if it wasn't for her we wouldn't be standing here."
I craned my neck to look around. "Speaking of which, where is she? She was with Sandman."
"And she still is. I imagine you want to talk to her." He said in such a way which told me that he didn't want me to.
"It's not as if you could stop me." I said.
Nigel half chuckled, "that's true." He stepped aside and I walked into the more packed cavern. The only Descendants missing now were the Descendants of Tooth.
I quickly found Penelope and Sandman, they were sitting together. There wasn't any conversation, but I could see from Penelope's relaxed position that the two had bonded.
Penelope saw me coming and jumped up.
"Jackie!"
"Hey."
Sandman stood up and waved, then floated off to join the other Guardians, who were standing a little separate from everyone else.
"How was it?" I asked.
"It was alright, although, they now know I've turned against them, but I should be alright for now."
"That's good to hear."
"Jackie!"
I turned to see Chris coming towards us.
"The others want to talk with you. When the Heads get back together, they may want a representative from us."
"Alright." I turned to Penelope, "Are you going to be okay?"
"Yeah, it's fine."
I walked back down to the group who stared at me as I approached.
"What? You're looking at me as if I have a second head."
"Chris did say why you're here, right?" asked Graham.
"Yeah, he thinks we need a rep for the Heads."
"The general opinion so far..." Said Stephen, "is that it should be you."
I stared at Stephen for second, trying to comprehend what he just said.
"Er, c-can you repeat that?"
"We think you should be our representative."
"Wha- Why?" I spluttered.
"A rep from here may go on to be Head representing us, this position traditionally goes
to the most powerful, which we all think is you, and you do already seem to have some competence in leadership."
My eyes had widened and I took a step back.
"No, I- I couldn't..."
"Why?"
"I'm not, that's not, me. I'm not a leader, I'm sorry, you've got the wrong person. I'm just a kid!" I said, my hands moving in a panicked way as I talked, frost beginning to cover my fingertips.
The others looked at each other and there seemed to be unanimous silent decision.
"Well then." Said Mary, "the second opinion was Alfred, would you agree?"
I nodded feverishly, anyone except me!
"Alfred, do you accept?"
The old man sighed, "Might as well, if Jacqueline won't."
"Well, it's decided then."
"In that case, "I said, backing off, feeling rattled, "can you excuse me?"
I ran back before I got an answer, running straight past Penelope and not stopping until I reached the wall.
Not feeling as though I was far enough away I began attacking the wall, first punching it, then sending blasts of ice at it. When none of it even put a dent in the wall I stopped and leaned my head against the wall, breathing heavily and feeling conflicted and confused.
I wasn't comfortable with the idea of being the most powerful or leader. Most of my life I just wanted to be normal, and now, here, my power was relatively normal, I was still abnormal.
Did I want this, no! I had just stepped up when I needed to, now I've finished stepping up and I just wanted to be like everyone else.
Except this wasn't going to happen. This event was going to go down in HOG history, I wasn't going to be remotely normal again. Tears began to fall down my face and I instantly wiped them away, that wouldn't help things.
"Do you mind!? That's my Warren yer tryin' ta bring down!"
I looked over to my right to see and a rather annoyed looking Bunnymund glaring at me with his arms folded. When I turned to look at him his expression changed to a softer one.
"Sorry." I said, turning my head back to the wall.
I heard him walk away, then call not too quietly.
"Jack! I think yer friend needs a word!"
A small rush of air alerted me to Jack's presence.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
I shook my head, I doubted he'd understand.
"It's okay, I'm not going to laugh if that's what you're afraid of."
I let out a sigh, trying to get some control back.
"The rest of the Descendants wanted me to be the representative for your Descendants."
"Well, that's great! Isn't it?"
"No, no it's not. The position traditionally goes to the most powerful Descendant at the time."
I took a break as my breathing hitched. Once I'd calmed I continued.
"For most of my life I just wanted to be normal. When I found HOG, I felt more normal, I was still an oddity, but I could be the norm. But now, I'm never going to be normal."
"Why'd you want to be normal?"
I'd normally stop talking here, but my mouth kept going without me wanting it to.
"I was lonely. I didn't dare go and play with the other kids at school because I was scared of my powers and what would happen if they found out. I've stood out as a loner my whole life, isolated, and for a while I hated it, but now I'm so set in my ways I just want to blend in."
"I suppose I understand, but you know, there's no fun in being normal."
"I don't really care all that much fun."
"Well you should, you are Descended from the Guardian of Fun."
"I don't believe that ancestors define a person."
"No, but we are part of who you are. I've spent a lot of time as a loner as well, before I became a Guardian no one could see me."
I looked over at him, to see him leaning against his staff as he always does, relaxed.
"Really?"
"Yeah, becoming someone, well, not normal, helped me, it could help you as well."
I turned away from the wall and slid down it into a sitting position.
"I can't change the fact that I'm powerful, but I still don't want to be a representative or a Head. I'm not good at leading."
"That's not what I saw earlier. You handled things pretty well."
"I'm just a kid, I don't want the responsibility."
"Now that, I can get behind!"
I chuckled and looked over the rest of the cavern. North and the Descendants of Toothiana had returned and Tina was talking with the other members of Burgess Branch.
Suddenly there was a noise like a ringing bell.
With their backs to me but facing the audience stood five people, the Heads of HOG and our rep, I wasn't sure if ours was official enough to be called Head yet. The four Heads didn't look too good, they were clearly tired, but they still managed to hold themselves high.
Jason stepped forward and began to speak.
"Now that we have all gathered we have a change of agenda; the Descendants of Pitch have made a move against all of us. So ladies and gentlemen, it is our duty to inform you that now is time for a War Council. As of now, we at war with the Descendants of Pitch."
There was muttering from the rest of the Descendants.
"Quiet!" Yelled the male dark haired Head, his Australian accent marking him as the Head Descendant of Bunnymund.
The muttering stopped.
"We would like to extend thanks to the Guardians, who helped us in our hour in of need and have allowed us to use the Warren. We would like to personally thank Jacqueline Davies, Descendant of Jack Frost for leading the rescue mission, but I'm told that she would like to not be disturbed." Continued the Bunnymund Head.
"Now we shall head to separate area and conduct the War Council. I suggest we all stay here in case we need to mobilise quickly." Finished the Head Descendant of Toothiana.
With that the five of them walked away to another part of the cavern to discuss and general chatter descended again.
"War... No, no no no no."
I hid my head in my hands, I couldn't take this anymore.
An arm wrapped around my shoulders.
"It's just going to be alright."
"Now you're just bullshitting, this is officially war now! How is that going to be okay?"
I lifted my head out of hands and sighed, "Just when I thought things couldn't get much worse."
As if everything wanted to contradict me, I heard a whinny and a scream coming from the tunnel we used to help Tooth.
A very familiar scream.
"PENELOPE!"
I jumped up, knocking Jack back with an oof, and sprinted for the tunnel.
"What's she doing?"
"Wasn't the scream of the Pitch descendant?"
"Why's she running towards it?"
